Thank you! The color is Egyptian violet (PV23) by williamsburg oils. Other brands have formulations with the same pigment but the Williamsburg one has such high pigment density that’s is basically a different color

Day 6: Boring but important work: testing my ProAcryls as I’m having some issues with a few of the bottles - particularly the grey-based colours. They brush on extremely thin and almost do not stick to the primer, then they end up drying really grainy. I’ve been shaking the shit out of this Bright Neutral Grey to see if that can help.

I don't think anyone's being tough about the rules. I have my own set of rules for what counts and does not. For me, buying primer would not count. But critically analyzing the color composition in a photo, scene, painting, advertisement and thinking how it would apply to minipainting would count for me!

Hey y'all, what do you guys do for the streaks when you travel? I saw (really) early on in this channel that folks did any hobby, but looks like recently things have been restricted to minis and mini painting? I've got travel coming up this spring, and maybe a day or two through the rest of winter. I will not be able to paint, unfortunately.

There aren’t really any rules for this challenge yet. It’s not the same as the advent event.

It’s a way to help people keep motivated. If you absolutely can’t do anything that progresses a mini. Do some research or sketching or something.
That way you’ll keep your streak and be motivated when you have the chance to paint again.

Day 3: Not sure if I’ll be able to get any painting done, but I cleaned and primed the two minis I plan to use for this month’s challenge. Gonna paint one the way I usually do and the other in a new style!

Day three of the new year, some progress despite it being a board game night. Her top has some color, and most of her skin does too now. Waiting another day or two for the primer to cure before I start on the haft

Mildly concerned about contrasts, because I'm thinking blond hair and a gold crown, but the crown might end up blue for the winter theme instead

You could actually go dark on the hair—black, streaked with white it grey) and then paint a white habit. If you do that, I’d dry brush/edge highlight the hat with black so it looks like dark/black embroidery. You could also invert that—make her a blonde, paint the hat black and edge highlight with a lighter color. She’s got a skull on her scythe and to me the hat looks sort of like a papal crown (can’t see the back) so something sinister feels right.

I think the contrast will show out better once you’ve dry brushed and highlighted.

Right now, I think doing a dark brunette might blend in too much with the skirt; I like the association of the crown and the belt, but I still might do some test patches for making both light blue instead

Day 6: I went back to a completed mini (no pic yet) to play around with some concepts I learned about color pairing. Trying to understand color wheels and theory a bit better and think I made some progress.

In the meantime (lots of time spent out of the house today) I worked on a project I started last night: NPC sketches and associated info for my campaign. I figure if I do one a day I’ll have a solid cast of NPCs I can use whenever or wherever I want/need.

Shout out to @jovial jacinth for posting a bunch of non-mini stuff; I found it super encouraging despite my persistent apprehension. This is such a cool community; I’m glad I started interacting with it more directly (I was lurking for awhile).

Day 8: this almost made me late for work but it was worth it. I had actually completed this night hag but something wasn’t quite right. Went back and tweaked it a bit and am so glad I did! I’m definitely on the wrong side of the Dunning-Kruger Effect right now, but that too is a good thing. After work I’m going to try finishing up the Owlbear I posted yesterday and then I’m gonna jump on painting those minis for the monthly challenge. Gonna try to knock out another portrait today too—recommendations?

Update: I managed to get the portrait done but no-joy on the owlbear mini. Will try again tomorrow, but happy I got both some painting and some sketching in.

But I’m starting to trick myself and think there’s sculpted volume there so that’s a good sign!

Streaking day 421: basecoats started

Day 25: Did some painting with my son—he’s 5 and asked if I would post photos of his finished minis to see what people thought. We are doing some priming and you can see his WIP next to the water. More to follow!

Day 421: realized his lips were teeth? So started to block them out as such. Refined the shell color on his knee that is barely visible and started work on the hair color. Also base coated the skirt?

Day 422 started a bit of work on the leathery bits behind it. Also cleaned some support tips and marks ( not featured just a pic I had on my phone of the model I was cleaning

Day 57. Fun with magenta. Highlighted the ak magenta, then used the warcolour magenta to highlight the red. These two magentas are such different colours.

Did a bunch of organising and planning for all out war and cleaned up this guy.

Day 58: started in some board game miniatures with xpress colours. Thus it is a bit rough now but i will work on the miniatures some more in the future. Addtionally i washed all the ships i basecoated yesterday, glued magnets to the bases of two miniatures and took a nice group picture of some miniatures i painted at the beginning of this month.

Day 59: Just started correcting the skin on the Etherfields miniatures for a few minutes but No picture of it

Day 424 found my squig that I lost and started laying down colors for my unicorn squig

Streak Day 424: I had totally forgot to paint the head and tail lights. So I did that today

Day 28: for the base coats down for my NYNY mini. Going for brighter overall colors and gonna try my first attempt of free-handing tiger stripes. I’ve been using WoW character art as a reference…a little concerned there’s still too much brown/black—not sure what color to make the boots either. For her sash, I’m thinking a pinkish highlight after wash—something to give a sort of twilight feel to it.

Day twenty-eight, crash day. Got together enough to do some prep -- pulled some more figures out of boxes to work on, scrubbed them up, had to glue a staff back on after I broke it off holding it, and then priming some metal minis.

Day 59. Primed a rising sun monster, then quickly found 10 more figures for the extra primer I still had.

Streaking day 425: drybrushed the big surfaces and painted dots. A lot of dots. Also based the rest of my squig riders for next month

Streak Day 425: I totally forgot that I had Liquitex: Transparent Mixing White that I wanted to compare with my Jo Sonja Titanium White. Well, I finally did some learning today. I mixed 50%-50% colors to whites and was pretty shocked by the results. The mixing white doesn’t affect the color as much as the titanium white does. Pretty cool 😎

If you look at your brush strokes, it's also not having as much effect on the transparency.

Day 29: Reworked some colors to bring out the contrast and tried my first shake at freehand (stripes)! I’m actually pretty pleased with how this is turning out!

Day 51: Just put matt varnish into the miniatures i finished yesterday. I discovered that the varnish i use (Bergswerk klairlack) losens some of the xpress colours when applied with a brush.

Fay 426 stated coloring the base and applied ground texture pastel also added some colors and color shifts on the squig. Sadly looks like shit under this light lol

Streaking day 427: painted a bit of the details on my shrines and did gap filling on squigs

Funny thing also happened with the eye. It's basically just a white eye with a thick coat of contrast on it, and afterwards I started painting the other side but realized I had actually held the whole thing so that my finger was exactly in the middle of the eye I just painted. So when I removed my finger, it left a print on the eye that you see in the pic. Basically a pupil and iris
