Day 24, focus and features, I went to the optometrist today to have my eyes tested, in a rare occurrence my eyes were significantly better than the last time I was tested.

They are tired from the test though so not a lot of painting tonight, no matter, I am on leave this week and can do some tomorrow during the day.

I mixed up a hot pink with magenta and white as suggested, but after trialling it, decided not to use it.

I blocked/undercoated a new mini a little, and finished off some more details on the big mini. For now, until I make a base, I’m going to call that one done. I have had enough of it for now.

I think I would like to do a mini that doesn’t have armour soon to play with shades, question is what that looks like and I am not sure yet.

Today’s lesson is pacing. Everything in time.

Day 26, The subtle art…, Today I had intentions to start the new fancy mini, but after fighting with adhesives for a while, I decided to just “play” without any expectations of doing a good job on a wizkidz mini.

The intention was to figure out how to do chainmail, but, I had colours on my palette and a brush in hand.

The idea was not to do an amazing job, just play with tones and shades and brushwork.

The result was quite surprising.

Streak Day 55: @drifting oracle inspired by you to try a more blog post style.

Today was a lesson in patience, focusing on thinning my paints to get a smooth coverage instead of plopping it all on. Thanks to the brush cleaner that helped (until it breaks 😭😭 per Rivvv). Practiced trusting the process of applying many thin coats on my bone along.

Perhaps will try more later as I’m inspired by @paper shard’s words of just using the tools instead of saving them until I’m good enough or out of fear of ruining them.

Todays lesson is two fold: use the brushes and have patience.

While a short voice chat session with some of the good peeps of the server, managed to work on this lil backpacking owlkin.

I did receive some super fab silicone brushes to hopefully help me with my greenstuff game. ( fingers crossed). I also love that these had Lil glitters inside because if I can be fancy, this is where I'll be 😂.

Although I've been feeling under the weather and fighting the fog preventing me from being a productive member of society I've been taking the time to find that inner zen, be patient with myself and be more deliberate with my focus.

Here's to hoping day 56 is better and we can finish more stuff

Day 27, Forging a way forward.
Today I got some super glue, and discovered that there is a “quickener”(catalyst) that can be used with it. (https://www.campbelltownhobbies.com.au/maxi-cure-insta-set-combo-pack), finally got the little guy’s flag to stick using that stuff.

Kudos to Deb at House of War for pointing me in the right direction yet again.

My new brushes arrived, on advice from some of the experts on discord, I have gone slightly larger (0,1,2) and I am finding them much easier to use.

I got started with priming then doing my own heavy handed zenithal priming process, I’ll see where it goes, just didn’t feel like using spray cans today.

The reason for this guy (on the right) is to practice new techniques. Highlights and shading. To be frank, I’m not 100% sure where I go from here, but I will keep playing until I am happy, and that alone will teach me a bunch. I am however very proud of the shading on the spear hand of the new model.

The silver on the other model wasn’t intentional, but I ran with it anyway and I don’t mind it.

For what it's worth, I was told super glue accelerant can make it a little more brittle. Probably nothing drastic (since Vince Venturella uses it all the time) but I would recommend using accelerant only when needed (also because of its cost)?

Streaking day 27: more white highlights. This is slow but very fun

Day 28, (posting a day behind) Down with the sickness, I watched some Vince Venturella videos on brush work, just the beginner stuff, and used my no 2 Raphael brush for most of the work.

I have found it is much easier to use than the smaller artis opus brushes I have, plus the bristles seem to be nicer overall.I experimented with different sorts of layering. Yellow on burnt umber, metallic medium (drybrushed) on black. I think the yellow came up quite well.

I have to say it’s the kind of technique that is just plain fun. seeing the colors come together is exciting and the whole time I you’re doing it it’s easy to have this “fuck it I’ll try this since I’ll paint over it anyways” attitude. Reminds me what’s important, having fun and challenging ourselves. This is a piece I had wanted to finish today but decided to just be okay with the progress I made and spend the time pushing myself on it. As always, patience is key and remembering to just have fun with it.

Day 29, Putting a face to the name.

I had tried unsuccessfully to put eyes on miniatures and certainly at my (any?) skill level it is very difficult. Tonight I managed to do ok! Lots of tips used from various sources today, red being needed for humans to see life, mixed with skin tones and white to get the right shades, highlights and lowlights, shadows, lines, and breath control for very detailed work.

I used Raphael and Artis opus brushes in equal measure tonight to achieve the effects.

Today’s lesson is steadiness. Just take a breath, hold it, paint and go on.

HobbyDay 58-6 (streak 2): I've continued to fix my preparation of most of my minis from the last batch of 12 😢 and now they're all good except these 3 - cyclops and electro got some more varnish to close gaps, and electro + ronan for sure will need some green stuff (not doing that today, likely tomorrow), hopefully not cyclops.
Also put some missing color dots on the caps of my new (and old-forgotten) pots!

HobbyDay 59-6 (streak 3): varnished Mystique & did a little more skin. Found my Kimera had moisted like crazy in the wet palette from yesterday (as usual, but I still dislike it) so somehow that encouraged me to get sketching crazy free... So that's what it became 😂

Note: I'm starting to appreciate Diarylide Yellow (not for its name 😂 ) for a glaze to bring back some orange-ish pop

Day 32 Frustration. Painting did not work for me this evening. First I tried a colour scheme that I thought would work, but didn’t, then I tried doing some highlights to calm down, and frustratingly my hands shook a bit.

Tomorrow will be a better day for painting.

I have days like these very now and again as well, when nothing wants to go my way and everything I do turns out bad. They come and go, next time will be better.

Ah sometimes paints color don't always work together in their natural state.

Here's a quick tip trick that helps me.

So let's say you've already based with color A. Take color B and add a very very small amount of color A to it. It will change the color (saturation/ value etc) but you will find both colors will work a lot better together. You can also do this trick with color A if you wish when you base.

Again it wouldn't be a 1 to 1 ratio or anything like that ( I mean you can if you want but then your original color won't really exist).

You could then still use the original color without mixing as a highlight or color to add texture / dimension to your piece if you wanted. Or even the new mixed color as a highlight/ shadow color if you want instead of your base coat. Depending on the areas and coverage of the surface you can experiment what you like versus don't like about it.

Pretty easy to make with plasticard though. Like these I did to match.

Sheet styrene. You can get it from railway hobby supply places or online.

Basically the same plastic as minis but in sheets. You can score it with a blade and snap it then use plastic cement to glue it.

1 and .5mm are used for 90% of my applications. You only need to go thicker or thinner if you're being fancy typically.

I highly recommend getting some square and round rods in both hollow and solid. Also some L shapes to help you make 90° corners too.

what i have learned from the marionette master (which isn’t done yet) is you have to treat it like multiple small projects.

I did a black using blue + burnt umber as the base and highlighting up with ice yellow

@pearl crow yeah cameras do weird things with color, if you are using more than 1 lamp try just using one, or just be near a window and you should get better colors

HobbyDay 90-35 (streak 2): Varnishing Electro tonight. My, I've really not been doing good at hobbying minis regularly, now, have I? I've counted the insert-building for the mage knight minis but not the rest of insert building (of course). Oh well, we'll see where this goes...

(I do feel a lot less efficient because of the interruption. I can confirm there's a good positive effect to staying in brush.)
