How would I go about getting this effect on a wooden shield? I want to paint it purple, but get the effect of the worn wood showing through where paint has chipped worn away.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Juan Hidalgo has a video that is pretty cool, and so does Vince Venturella.
You could maybe try painting the purple then dry brush on a wood color, also maybe test out different techniques to see which ones best before you paint on the real mini
What would I search for on their channels?
Thanks, I'll give that a go
In this video we will see how to paint a nice Wood Effect for your miniatures using acrylic paints.

In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through my technique for creating faux wood grain. Often models have areas that are meant to be wood, but lack any definition in the sculpt, this technique allows you to create that realistic wood grain through the application of simple techniques. Hope you enjoy!
