just finished painting this new mini. I tried a bit more highlighting and layering this time but I don’t know how much really came through. I’m not the most happy with him but I want to try to be as positive and learn as much as possible because I know I can get better, any tips or pointers to improve technique overall or the mini?

Just keep practicing basic brush work, and paint consistency.
Like on the jet pack, it looks like your paints thick in some points, and very thin in others. You can try thinning down your paints, and applying 2-3 coats to get a much nicer consistency.
What do you think you achieved best in this piece, and what's 1 thing you don't like?
Heya! You have a decent start here. Personally I would probably keep pushing the highlights use a lighter color ( even if it's a bit extreme like an almost neon green for example) thin it down maybe 3 drops of water to 1 drop of paint? and slowly work up the highlights so it does a slow blend up to a more distinct area.
It's important to create a lot of contrast in miniatures because we most often look at them from afar ( after we've painted them) so you need to push the contrast because natural contrast from lights usually isn't enough)
Pardon the very basic example attempt but this is probably what I would do ( although a bit smoother with the actual paints lol)
thanks for all the advice everyone!
I like the red, I think it contrasts well with the rest of it, but I dont really like the way the green blends in with the grey a bit too much, I want to figure out how to make it pop more and I think I can do that with highlighting
What color are you using to highlight?
It might be making it chalky if you are using white
I was gonna mix a lot lighter of a green
Sounds good 😊 if you are limited in color options you can also add s bit of yellow to your green ( on top of the white) to avoid desaturating the green too much .( keeps it less pastel and more vibrant)
