i do, i follow the red wings, as milwaukee and detroit my two favourite cities, grew up a lions and tigers and bucks fan, got into the brewers later and when it came time for hockey the red wings were a natural pick. one of the oldest teams (celebrating their centennial year this year and those jerseys are dope) and among the original six teams, they have a sick logo, and are the most successful usa based franchise (11 stanley cups) but theyve been pretty mid these past few years. longest playoff draught in their history is ongoing i believe.
The Wild would be a second cool team to root for. theyre in the other conference, and also in close proximity. several of my friends are blackhawks fans cos of proximity to milwaukee but i could never root for chicago. but the blackhawks also a classic original 6 team.
i have been to both the red wings and wild arenas and its an awesome time. Minnesota and Michigan the two best hockey culture states in the US by far. i'm from Wisconsin but my dad has family in Minnesota, and they all care about hockey more than any other sport really. sure they like the vikings, but the gophers and wild are their teams. Wild have never won a stanley cup, dont think theyve even made one yet. but theyre a relatively young franchise.
also, one of my best friends (originally from wi) moved to st louis after he got married and shortly after the rams moved back to la and he started watching the blues and got really into nhl, and a few years later they won the cup. i root for them on the side as well, but my main team is the red wings.
The Red Wings were also the first team to really open up the game to international play when they started to draft players from the Soviet Union , they had a famous run where they won three Stanley cups where they had a team with five different Russian players that played a different brand of hockey that was frowned upon by traditional Canadian NHL old heads .
there's a cool book and documentary that highlights the story of that era. It's called The Russian Five
its about how these Russian players had to flee the Soviet Union just to be able to come to the US to play for an American team, and how they changed the NHL and the NA perception of what ice hockey could be
they were also coached by Scottie Bowman who is considered to be one of the greatest if not the greatest coach in North American professional sports history
