I have to agree on this, as much as it pains me. The AI being in such a state makes it difficult to give meaningful feedback that's not strictly technical stuff (UI, bugs etc), so please, if any Dev is reading this, consider this a priority: not only to make the game more enjoyable now, but also to allow us to help you make the game better for future players.
#AI is in an abysmal state, critical fixes needed
228 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Adding to that, AI is terrible at dealing with doom raids. I once saw enemy Last Lords having three doomwraiths on their territory for more than 10 turns, while having large enough army to deal with them easily. In my current game there is a doomwraith in my neighbor's capital, slumbering peacefully and hindering his approval. Next to it is my neighbor's army that's too busy just standing there for the last 20 turns and ignores this minor inconvinience. And 10 tiles above them is unclaimed region with hyperium deposit, two villages and natural wonder, while this absolute stoic is enjoying his 5 territories, two of which were claimed after the second tidefall (it's turn 92 already, what's going on).
This raises another broader point, and thank you, that AI never prioritizes anything of value.
Wonders go unclaimed, fortresses no longer seem to get cleared, very rarely AI wars, no evidence of AI alliances.
If for some reason an AI were close to victory, they spam a shared victory or collapse.
Even as Necrophage, I am bombarded with favorable free diplomacy, receiving tribute for agreeing to diplomacy that benefits only me.
It's also a shame for learning the game. sure, getting just destroyed by the AI wouldn't let anyone learn, but if the AI played at least well it could help teaching players what to do.
I encourage everyone to start saving your score graphs at the end of the game, for each category and posting them
literally first game with Necrophages, it's not optimised at all
I reccomend settling in basic playstyles for each race and doing those. Cuz like dude said above the ai just does nothing.
Just noticed, they also don't do quests. Enemy questline units are just roaming around the map untouched.
Just commenting because I want the devs to see this, Ive been loving the game, but I don't feel I'm accomplishing anything if the AI doesn't try to kill me and win, it makes me not want to play, Wich I hate because I really want to love this game
I think ai shall have no quests and locations.
They just should straight out cheat
As we play against ai they are just like some roaming bigger quests
They make cities etc but they are like fortreesses and factions quests
BeagleJack analysis is 100% true. The AI is extremely weak. The game presents no challenge for a player with some 4X experience.
This is EL2's most critical problem. With most players playing solo, having a challenging AI is a necessity to motivate players to keep playing EL2. Otherwise, they'll quickly tire of the game.
That'd explain a lot... It'd explain the many 'this is part of a quest chain' encounters
Well I hope people don't leave the game, I know it will be addressed soon, I certainly won't go anywhere
I'd be concerned if we dont see an serious improvement in a week of launch. Testing all civs and novelty can carry people till then
I'm concerned now because there was an internal early access and an extended Demo.
Bad ppl have been taken into it
We need to go to studio in person to show issues
I’m always game for better and more dynamic 4x AI. Agreed on all points.
Also, always a possibility to allow the AI to get suspiciously good luck.
Combats drops, initial spawn location, curiosities luck
There a lot of ways the AI could get lucky without actual cheating
Your graphs line up with my own, over time, on Endless, and I suspect will line up with other players' graphs with minor differences, which are to be expected, across difficulty, map size, factions, number of actions.
Only thing that I can add for now to this topic is that:
To get usefull feedback from players in a way to improve AI players should have a way to observe some AI decisions like build or tech order.
Something like console command to switch faction with AI mid-game or some other way.
I definately didn't feel like the AI wasn't particularly relevent. I imeadiatly made a treaty with my Aspect ally and then just completely outscaled the rest of the AI empires in the game.
Its strange because I struggle AI on normal difficulty from EL1 I literally played that most of my time I began a game but now I am finding veteran not too easy but doable. I know for a fact I shouldn't be on this level It would be first time in any 4X games in the first week . I came to agree and hope it get's looked at
Mind posting any victor graphs of each different categories?
-Images 2 days ago on Hero Difficulty.
Tahuks
-I've only just started my Veteran oh sorry I meant Stellar. Will have to wait another day for those graphs but am coming 2nd atm.
Easy games i see here
Wheres theres no challange.
What about some meeting with the devs through video calls to explain an issue?
So after I played few games on Endless I can say this:
AI Aspect is mostly ahead of me in score (thanks to military)
At some points few other players have bigger score than me.
I wouldn’t say AI is passive, they constantly attack my units, pillage my provinces even without war. And every game someone declares war on me. First games it were Necrophage , now it’s Tahuks declared war at turn 20. Mfkers attacked my 600 power stack with its 1200 power stack for no reasons, had to kick him, than he declared war.
So AI definitely doesn’t feel passive in my games xD They constantly pressuring me, but that pressure is kinda lacking, but still annoying. I will be falling off a lot in score, just because I have to deal with 2 )$&5@ constantly attacking me from different sides. But when I exterminate at least one of them/ have more armies, it’s no longer an issue. But I have other questions regarding AI:
Running for my capital to pillage every time is kinda stupid.
Constantly offer some treaties to me.
Poor clearing of Fortresses.
The fact that we have to play on Endless to even have some sort of pressure. Makes me wonder what the purpose of the other difficulty levels are and they can't all be easy for 4 of them. I Hope Difficulty Adept/Hero and Stellar gets a look. I seem to relate on Stellar and I am actually losing only by one AI faction. I am constantly holding up 2nd place.
I hope we get more Fortress unit and Leader varieties too, to ad more flavour and difficulty. They should be hard to take down.
Lets go onto video call with derek
I mean the ai is a huge issue yet they state its doing great
i think its pretty clear theres an issue and what it is, i dont see how a video call would help
We see the issue, but some people dont.
At the last Q&A derek said that its doing great in demo.
And hes game designer leader
At around turn 80 to 90 it feels like there is literally nothing to do. There's still 30 turns+ till next monsoon, i cleared out all the dungeons, picked up all curiosities, got all camps with key resources, meanwhile AI is still in stone age dicking around. Unless i want to go for total domination, game literally becomes a snoozefest and it's largely due to AI's incompetence.
+1 for making the Ai decision tree known. If yall dont wanna make it public (companies love to TRY to hide something players will easily discover 90% of anyway) Id suggest at least making use of the insiders thing. Again, waste of free manpower, but companies do companies things...
Like, as long as it doesnt impact MP, i dont care if yall give players literal GTA cheat codes
wont we have modding anyway? cmon just make it public
Wow... extremely flat graphs
by the time awakening conditions came live, i could already win on all 3 conditions
note that this was on Hero difficulty, before i knew that endless is the only reasonable choice due to poor AI
a solo sandbox experience for veterans 😄
Expect for units 😉 that they didn't use at all it seems
Yeah lol, and its the same thing others have said too i think. Just making units, not using them for anything, and tanking the rest of their development (with that and in other ways)
Quite tragic
yep. needs some time in the oven for sure
Its good that we showing now because they can see a few images and see where its going wrong. I believe some people are skilled here and myself who isn't skilled so they have a lot of information and skill level variety to work with. It should definitely help 🙂
I remember the time I played Old World, everything was chill and easy, maybe too easy, cuz I was winning every game I played. Then I checked the post game stats. One of my AI opponents had LOST 10 times(!) more units than what I RECRIUTED over the course of the entire game. That's the moment I stopped playing Old World.
Here AI also builds a lot of units, but has no clue how to use them.
I've heard from multiple sources OW has a very good AI, doesn't it? I've never played it myself.
I definetely didn't notice that. The game itself is very fun tho.
EL1 had very poor AI, with the same kind of stupid behavior we see here. People will also find ways to justify a lacking AI in games, except then modding happens.. and with ELCP the EL1 AI was massively improved. It's still not a great, in that it's challenging only because it gets ridiculous buffs to everything, but the unmodded AI couldn't even attack properly, whereas ELCP AI is a true menace lategame.
I played it quite long ago, however. Maybe it became better on newer versions.
No idea myself, just what I heard! 🙂
Okay, I checked my save file, It appears that I'm a dirty liar, they only lost 7 times more units than what I made. Shame on me. (Stats on the right show victory points)
Can you post the other graphs (excluding score)? Check the top right for other categories
Okay, this one deserves a separate post, what's going on there?
Is it simply a visual bug or did you do some sort of infinite resource abuse on your last few turns?
Just finished a game in endless difficulty.
for the record, I ended it with 5 army at 2000+ and 5 army at 1500+ with +2500 dust and +800 influence / turn.
This is my 5th game (3rd with last lord).
Hey, those ones actually did decent. But even there, after some moment in the game AI just stopped claiming territories.
First game won as Tahuks, in the previous one I killed my own units by throwing them at Necrophage camps too early.
There were two necrophages in this game, the first put me in the backfoot for a lot of the early game, the other didn't really do much. I was worried about Kin stealing the victory via Pacified villages, but after declaring war on them they sent their armies to me and stopped pacifing, which was my intention.
Good game, can't say I am disapointed in the AI
Hero difficulty
definitly, but there are other weird things they did like :
- created numbers of army at quite low level (1500) and sending them across my territory to attack a specific city
- not engaging in losing battle to damage my armies when they have 3 armies against 2
- never counterattacking when sieged
also they were in a coalition of three against me but still managed to lose
Yeah, even on Hero difficulty on my game the pink Necrophage stopped claiming territories by about turn 40, Kin and Aspects really slowed down after turn 130
Endless Difficulty... Probably my first and last game I'll play till AI gets a patch...
Had one single war the whole game and that was started by myself just to try out how siege works mostly... Otherwise I was completely left in peace...
Your comment made me think of one more problem I encountered in my games quite consistently: AI flees the battle every time it's army is even so slightly weaker than yours.
It happens like that: your army attacks the enemy, who has slightly lower army score. If it would stand its ground and fight you, it would probably kill at least a few of your units. However, AI checks auto-battle results, realises it will lose and therefore retreats. Next turn you catch it and force a battle again, only now AI has 50% less health, it can't retreat anymore, it fights and it fails miserably, because all of its units now die in one hit.
(Repeat 5 times, then capture undefended cities)
exactly even if they outnumber you
you can just take them out one by one
also I dont know if its an intentional mecanic or not but once the walls are breached you can either attack and fight the defender (+reinforcement) or just : retreat the siege, attack again and then the defender dissapeared and you can just capture the city without any battle
thought so
I just started a game as the Kin and noticed something about this past game. I did not see a single Chosen from the AI Kin.
Ai doesnt kill those big bois from the rifts
So i believe thats why they loose all the time
They got no quality in army and they lack big power house when it cones to tough battles
Rn after 30+ turns theres still wraiths on their terriorirty
I thought i was just doing well for the my first time, and maybe i was, but i thought the ai got destroyed by doomwraiths or something. I didn’t know how it lost it’s army. Though i did kill alot of it’s units early on.
Oh I didn't know that!
I always getting bullying by AI early game, because i have no clues what to do in this game when you need build district for 10 turn, units for 20 turns and getting enough influence for just 1 foundation in over 10 turns... And Ai at this moment always attacks my units with bigger armies, pillaging my camps and I can't just go exploring xD Yet yeah after certain point AI gets finally kicked out by me and than when I have more than 2 armies, I can go clear map freely. (endless difficulty)
It’s usually why Necrophage AI takes a huge dip in military score after the doomwraiths come out. They lose a lot to them.
Tried to keep myself away from the easier victory conditions like territories. Here was a Necro science win:
(bunch of screenshots of the graphs)
large 6p
Basically never declared war or even really interacted with any of the AI, except one of them early on. Most of the Necro military was just pointed at minor factions/forts
Necro conquest. Basically the opposite of the game above: I was at war with everyone for almost the whole time. AI performance probably isn't as useful here for obvious reasons, but maybe you'll find the comparison interesting.
Leftover graphs + game info:
Only the Approval rating is what it should look like on the other graphs not all depending on type of victory.
Makes sense that Last Lords are producing the most food. They aren't consuming it, after all, so all the generation they get from tiles is unaffected.
What is this weird drop near turn 130, however, I don't know.
Congratz lol 2 hrs though dam I must play like a SNAIL hahahah. It takes me 2 days. Most 4x Games do. Only got 4 players too. Well played
Hero Difficulty!
Friendly Ally Last Lord should really have a similar Dust Economy as me, just under. It would make sense since we both dominate in this area 🙂
Endless difficulty, well at least I can play Necrophages, this way I'm actually better than AI xD AI didn’t attack me, because I clearly was ahead in score almost entire game, nobody run around pillaging my stuff… Pretty different game, compared to when you are below the score
Don’t worry about it, time doesn’t matter, take 5 minutes or 5 days
Turn 100 and i conquered city from ai
All improvements avaiable from the 90 production ones starting...
Also i found that with tahuks the governor that gives science for stability works extremly well
+2 for pop is multiplied by the +200% factor
And on later quests theres option to take it to 300%
I had in capital 5k food and 3k+ production on turn 115
And had 3.5k science with governor
This should never ever happen
other than the obviously big stuff yall really need to make it so the AI is doing the bare minimum unit upgrades
and basic army building
this endless btw
I thought more about this topic.
Default score victory turn is 300.
I think most 4X players would expect from AI to ocacasionaly win near turn 280 (default difficulty).
AI should not win at lower difficulties to attract more less experienced players / learning curve.
On Endless AI should win near turns 120-150 as players could have 5k food and 3k production near that time.
Another path is to nerf all combos that players found, but it's a really bad balancing path.
@chilly arrow looks like you play a lot, I think it will be a cool addition to this topic if you turtle play up to turn 300 to check can AI win at all.
You can just set the 1 city challange and skip 299 turns
Than on last turn you can see ai is doing worse than you.
You win as last man standing
I still have a lot of gameplay to explore myself but looks like beagle jack already ate all candies before dinner (release) thats why I wrote him about that idea. 😅
my 1st game on difficulty 1 level higher than normal/recommended, I share feedback with you and I'm kinda disappointed, coming from similar games I knew you usually need to help AI to be at similar level with you and offered them research treaties etc but seems like AI is just too dumb/simple
I didn't even get to the rifts/corruption etc because the game just ends and I don't feel like I have anything to do on the map at this point
after playing just a single game I don't think I'm up for more... maybe when DLC drops or they address AI 🙂
I once had an AI reach 100 pop on endless but they would not switch victory path to win
That would be a good idea to change that through coding. Great catch
Tahuks probably could win by tech especially if they manage to build some libraries near their unique quarter or too lazy with buttons which sifon science from their pool.
Did you ever seen their spies in you cities? I didn't play much against them to have a strong opinion on Tahuks AI.
Or maybe they don't use them because they struggle with
from rifts creatures and don't want to push it down more.
sure, game is actually great and I'll play more - once they address the AI and/or add more content, I feel like I saw pretty much 90%+ of what the game has to offer other than different playstyles of different factions
All ais die from wraiths
Even necros even tho they are super aggresive
Thuks are very gimmicky faction with trash heroes and trash units till the last artillery one. Humans can use their science gimmicks, AI doesn’t, so that’s why Tahuks are the worst.
Current AI has no chances
I started my first game in Aspects on one difficulty above normal, with 5 competitors on a large map.
**I noticed that the AI tends to over-focus on warfare once a conflict begins. **For example, my neighbor Necrophage had plenty of free land to the north, but instead kept declaring war on me as soon as the truce expired—even though his overall strength was clearly weaker. Only after I forced a treaty to fix relations did he finally expand into his backlands.
On another continent, I saw the same pattern: once the AI gets into a war, its development slows down dramatically.
What a job. You're very involved in trying to improve the game, congratulations.
Ai should never be starting this fight. It literally run away the previous turn (hence the half hp)
I guess it didnt see my other team? Humans have that excuse cuz like, it is annoying to approach tile by tile for vision, and then declare the attack
but not the ai
I guess it doesnt keep old info? My armies lit on the same place
This aligns with my own experience. These guys have been fighting nonstop, and have only succeeded in dragging each other down.
May be imagining it, but the AI seems to perform better on Archipelago. If war is part of what's tanking their growth, delaying their meeting with other AIs might help them develop.
My suspicion is that there are a variety of overlapping factors, one of which may be the usage of a default fallback persona that’s attempting to apply all personas at once, or using an extremely basic placeholder persona, as a result of not properly loading the sandbox AI personas.
Also, what result if AI simulation events don’t execute properly or their turns exceed their inherent timer?
Honestly 1v1 aspect, go open borders and spy on them to see wtf ai is doing all game
I’ve played recent game with Last Lord and AI Aspect had 160 units at turn 150 or so, 160 Karl! I had around 20.
i already know what they are doing, simulating a bunch of armies
They pump up score for score victory at turn 300 😅
Before they lose at turn 100
First time playing these guys. Casual turn 117 science victory, though I had to turn off pop + territories.
Stellar Difficulty + Shared Victory+ Population Victory.
My personal feedback. The graph and statistics shows a much better line/Waves and more evenly distributed, mostly with Aspects though. I would say my ally Tahuk is a bit slow in many things. The other 2 doesn't matter because I purposefully wanted to defeat them. A weaker Graph would make sense in that case. Definitely a little bit more balanced, but still need some improvements which I can see with upcoming updates 🙂
-Definitely aiming for building 5 Monument Victory but pop victory interfered as usual.
My first game on Endless, I was very worried in the early game due to the +%40 bonus damage and health on Major Factions, but their aggression never went beyond pillaging camps, even by the Necrophages. Kin and Aspects are the most capable AI empires from my experience so far.
Unit graph shows how you didn't play as AI. Where are all these juicy 210 units.
Offtopic question:
How did you get 80+
at turn 0. Something changed in latest patches? I'm always below 60 on turn 0 like AI. Settle anomaly? Sacrificed your first pop? Are you cheating? 😅 Every AI starts near 45 on that graph.
yeah the lategame is kind of nonexistent right now, it's clear by turn ~80 that the AI doesn't really know how to expand or compete
I'm on endless with standard settings but 5 AIs and 70% of the map is empty
it's also making a lot of victory conditions arbitrarily easy so I don't know if you can effectively balance around this
yeah I agree
for example, can't tell how hard clearing 10 fortresses or getting 25 villages would be in a setting with equally competent players because the human player scoops up all the resources
whatever they're doing for the aspects, just do that for all of the AIs tbh
exactly!
I expected game will crash to desktop with 0 pop in my city 😅
But looks like it's a swiss cheese
First game as Necrophages on Endless. I for sure lost too many units to neutral armies early on, then the Kin came for my capital and I didn't have enough units to defend it. First loss too.
first game on Endless (Dust Lords), 2nd in total. Already exterminaded my neighbor Necrofage, can't say he put much of fight (his garnisons did though, 2 behemoths each)
After Endless Legend I expected AI to be miles ahead, but no. It seems you need to play only hardest possible to have some challenge
How losing to this ai now?
Its like 5th lvl difficulty earlygame and -1 lvl lategame
I've noticed the necro ai is really weird
it shotguns its camps all over the place and then shuffles its armies through neutral territory instead of burrowing
Not sure why you folks all expect the AI to be in a good state. It's a waste of time developing it now only to have to redevelop it after all the changes you're insisting on elsewhere.
there is a giant chasm between AI development hitting diminishing returns and it not even being able to survive by itself
Did not have enough units to deal with Kin when they declared war on me, I also insisted on keeping one of my armies away to consume a city they forward settled, while they were sieging down my main city
this didn't help, but if I had stopped consuming their city I would have probably only lasted a few more turns.
Could have tried white-peacing them after they lost the city, but was curious to see if I could defend the city
I couldn't xD
Feel free to try the saves ^^
It's like a narative bug.😅
When you can have a capital, but literally nobody lives there. 0/10 place, not recomend it.
Edit:
But it's a big brain move to sacrifice first guy who produce 3 yields for 10x more ( 30 yields.)
Its not 10
U get stability bonuses so like 40+
Getting 1st improvement faster is 200iq move
endless difficulty, huge map. AI is weak, it's very easy to extinguish it (decided not to, only few neighbors). But, reading all this chat, I actually expected worse
Ai is very bad, its not even debatable
Even when left alone
yeah, especially comparing to EL1. But as I said, expected worse 😄 They did clean up fortresses, surprisingly
I mean one problem with ai is they don’t attempt quests. You see invisible quest armies just roaming around for dozens of turns. They should honestly just do what they did in EL1 and have AI auto complete quests after a certain number of turns so they don’t have to try and make the ai smart enough to handle all the different kinds of quests. Also I’m not really sure what they spend all their industry on? Like ai cities have absurdly low district counts. Do they just build troops without going for districts and improvements first?
Yes. Units. More units. And a bit more units. And some more. Just another unit or two. 150 isn't enough, should queue 10 more. And a few more.
But it can get closer enough if programmed right I found Age of wonders 4 very exhausting and tough even on medium, when I was learning the game. AI is doable not on human level but closer enough. Amplitude is definitely looking at it, so yay!
Outside of bugs and technical issues, this should be the number one priority without question. If your AI is not even remotely challenging or competent, then there is little reason for players to engage with your game.
And poor player engagement is obviously bad.
At the very least, AI should be gobbling up territory as often as possible. If it's empty, plant your camp and try to attach/create city; this is the fundamental aspect to success in any 4X game.
Next, the AI should base Diplomacy according to Military Strength. If an AI faction has an overwhelming advantage, it should be Neutral at best; unless I work my butt off to increase favour and make it like me.
Finally, if it has an overwhelming Military force, it should be quick to hit my faction with negative Diplomatic Actions at the slightest provocation. Culminating in warfare and a concerted attempt to actually attack my faction if things get really bad.
Basically, make them act like other players who want to win first. Then worry about giving them specific behaviours/preferences afterwards.
Even Humankind, with all of its problems, got this part right. Enemy Factions expanded aggressively, and those with higher military power would be happy to wage war while attacking your cities.
Endless Legend 2 AI only sits above the most rudimentary implementation of strategic AI.
This indeed doesn't make me want to play more, what's the point if other factions don't do anything
Finally finished a game on the beta. Slower than a science win, but not by much.
Also kind of embarrassing that even on Endless as Kin I still beat the AI to the 3 city deed by a comfortable margin. Could've scaled faster if I didn't keep playing the scour gacha.
I know this Feedback section is quiet but wanted to share my First win with Stellar Difficulty PTB updates. I see massive changes and great statistic graphs with AI from the starting 0-120 turns. I do like the mid game being quiet sometimes allowing me to concentrate on expansion and building constructions.
However I do believe in the last 10 turns of my victory there should be Maximized pressure, hopefully it is something they can look into for the AI
Haven't played much on current patch, but it seems like AI generally became more competent in terms of expansion. I didn't notice any improvements to its military capabilities, however.
Expansion a bit better but rest still sucks
Looking nice! Don't think I can do Endless seems pretty intense.
After this patch, I feel like the AI is actually playing the game now. I am now getting attacked, they are expanding and actually investing into cities.
Overall a very good step in the right direction with this patch. Keep it up devs and thank you!
Their is still work to be done and balance and tuning but overall i can feel/see difference in how it behaves and acts.
Numbers feel a little high, personally It think the hard cap of 1500 influence per territory for necrophage is a bit low. something like 2000 might be better. numbers seem way higher than non tahuks simply because I have ~40 territories before turn 100. ignore dust drop I took off plays with fire from council lol. Also by this point I was able to take a new territory literally every turn but finished the game instead of super accumulating territories.
In my opinion, the AI should be smart enough and with big bonus enough that a very good player should lose 75% of the time when playing at maximum difficulty. That should be the standard to aim for. Even a very good player should have to choose a difficulty level lower than the maximum if he wants good chances of winning.
