I have some questions about how an item with multiple flare sources work. The wiki suggests that materials with inherent flares like Rhimar don't occupy slot B. Does this mean I could add another elemental flare to such an item and get the benefits of both? Similarly, would I benefit from a flared weapon and the plasma flares from a bonded weapon simultaneously? If I had a sanctified weapon with the holy fire flares, would all four be viable at once?

If the wiki states that explicitly for rhimar it is wrong. Rhimar et. all definitely use the flare slot.
It can be confusing but many materials "innate" property is they just come preloaded (and in fact have to retain no matter what) standard (ability / flare / cat b / whatever we're calling it today) flares. The suite of elemental flaring materials (rhimar, gornar, etc.) are like this. Kroderine weapons are similar with dispel flares. If you're a big spender xazkruvrixis does this with death flares, and low steel for mindwrack flares.
Some of the more recent materials with flares (ghezyte, starsong, somnis) only use the material slot for their flare. However we still just got Obskruul which takes up the ability/cat b slot with impact flares similar to gornar.
If you have one of those materials that have the normal flare slot open then what you suggested is true yes. If you bonded to a somnis weapon for instance you would get the sleep flares, as well as the plasma flares from bonding. If you bonded to a zorchar weapon you would not as the lightning flares it has would override it.
The kinda quick and dirty version is basically (this is kinda going off memory), from materials with flare or flare-like behavior: ghezyte, high steel, somnis, starsong, and white alloy are the current "true" material abilities that have the ability slot open. The rest use the "normal" flare slot. Also adamantine and surita, which don't flare per se, also have the ability slot open.
Rusalkoran variants are also material only
knew i forgot one.

Player: if they can make flares stack with everything, why can't they make 1604 stack with slot b
Estild: That’s something I’d like to address later this year.
Estild said the 1604 only working for things with the flare slot open was something they'd like to change this year. So, it may not be an issue long term. Normal disclaimer that we're like 3+ years out and still not "done" with the existing pally review not to mention 5 years out on Sorc review and 20 years out on savants so plan for nothing to happen also probably.
Thanks. Yeah, I was inferring that Rhimar's flare was a "material property," which is apparently not true for this case.
flares being inherent to a material does not mean they do not occupy the cat-b slot. it means that the material cannot exist on that item without the flare also being present.
