Long ago I thought it would be a wonderful idea to make my character the same age as me. I figured we could enjoy aging together. Surely, what's the harm??

I WAS WRONG! THAT WAS A MISTAKE!

I now have 3 remaining years left in my prime before the game describes my character as:

1. appears to be long in the tooth
2. appears to be in her golden years
3. appears to be advanced in years
4. appears to be past her prime
5. appears to be stooped with age```

Can we look at tweaking the age descriptors for human and aelotoi races? That would be greeeeeeeat.

Hahaha i asked for this before. I really hope they adjust this. It's sooooooo bad! 🤣

This is why I started Trall with “one foot in the grave” (also… it’s funny)

untold blade

you're not there yet? so young.... so much to learn 😋

quasi lake

I have to learn how to be stooped with age? That does not seem like a teachable skill.

Seconding, thirding, fourthing this request, which always seems to come up every year or two and yet never is addressed. Don't make your players feel even older than they are!

rare star
#

YES. Fix this please!

Raelee and Maylan are on the same timetable!

Don't make Raelee ask her Luukosian friends for some weird youth-restoring blood ritual! (aka, age reset)

summer jungle
#

Wait, no, Raelee still needs to do this. I retract my statement!

rare star
#

What if I sign her up for a different Luukosian blood ritual instead?

I think of how vibrant my friends in their 50s and 60s are, and they are nothing like:

1. appears to be stooped with age
2. appears to be time-worn
3. appears to be senescent
4. appears to be of a ripe old age
5. appears to be old

                      56 to 61
1. appears to be old
2. appears to be stricken in years
3. appears to be old and wrinkled
4. appears to be in her declining years
5. appears to be aged

                      62 to 67
1. appears to be aged
2. appears to be hoary with age
3. appears to be elderly
4. appears to be bent with age
5. appears to be very old```
#

These decades are some of the best years to be alive, and I don't want to characterize them as declining years. That's not how I see them. I'm fine with such descriptors being options, but I'd love some more leeway.

summer jungle
#

I mean, to be fair, sometimes I feel stricken in years at age 42. But I certainly don't (think I) look that way. 😹

quasi lake
#

It's funny how much younger these ages seem as you near them, isn't it? 60 seemed ancient when I was a kid. Now it seems not really so old at all.

summer jungle
#

Must've been a young GM who wrote them..

Let's see how stooped they are now!

quasi lake
#

There goes Maylan, all hoary with age. Such a shame.... what a waste...

rare star
#

And you don't need to be old to be stooped!

#

There's plenty of younguns out there with cell-phone neck.

summer jungle

I wrote up a very lengthy suggestion based on some commentary several years back that proposed revisiting the age brackets and simplifying them to fewer brackets with more options/overlap on each. I could probably find it here somewhere, but it is very disheartening to see this topic keep coming up again and again and again with lots of support from players and yet never any acknowledgement from staff.

fleet wren
#

To be representative, you need to compare to fifty and sixty year olds who have spent every day fighting for their lives and also died and been brought back to life multiple times. If anything, the descriptions at like fifteen should be "appears to have seen enough and has one foot in the grave"

quasi lake
#

If we're using game logic, then it stands to reason every empath heal would renew your body back to youth and vitality.

rare star
#

And if we need some new descriptors.... there can always be a contest! (But I agree... just widening the age ranges on the existing brackets would fix the problem.)

I am 54 and in no way feel I am any of these:

  2. appears to be time-worn
  3. appears to be senescent
  4. appears to be of a ripe old age
  5. appears to be old

I'm 43 and these:

3. appears to be advanced in years
4. appears to be past her prime
5. appears to be stooped with age```
Just fill me with rage. 🤣

Thank you for taking note of the desire. It does seem like there is general agreement and consensus among players and GMs when the issue is raised, but we never see movement on it. I'm hoping to find out how plausible it would be to expect a revision at some future date, or if it's just not in the cards.

Here are some additional alternative suggestions:
-She appears to be of an age to display an "Eat, Pray, Love" inspirational poster in her entryway
-She appears to really really really really really love cats... and books... and cats... and wine.

thick veldt

Keep golden years! I wanna get to that if my character and the game exist for 200 more years

quasi lake
#

Definitely keep golden years. Thank you for digging up that old post, Shan. The solution you propose is a very solid one. It does seem appropriate to give us the flexibility to play up or down our character's age appearance, from the soft-handed aristocrat to the grizzled old warrior and everything in-between.

@Maylan Hey Maylan; not the solution your are wanting necessarily but maybe the solution you need (or something). There are birth certificates (I forget what they are called exactly) in the game that allow you to change your charcters birthdate / age.

As much as I STRONGLY advocate for revamping the way ages are displayed, I do always have a standing offer for anyone who wants to RP (using GM-written lore-vetted explanations) the results of one of the x-change potions from the Simucoin store, including age resets (and, yes, race, profession, or culture resets, too). We can either do it fully RPed in game or if our schedules don't align right and you want your justification a lot sooner, we can also do it hand waved off screen.

Disclaimer: Your character will probably not like it, and it will involve completing a deal with the Order of Luukos. Your character will also die and decay once.

They don't even exactly need to be "changed", so much as more postive euphemisms added "in addition to". We could hold a random GM down and make them read romance novels so they can start babbling words like distinguished, experienced, venerable, mature at their bemused colleagues. Even some humorous ones like, they seem as if they were to fall, they would have a hard time getting up. Or some for the younger age ranges that reach up into looking older, because that's a thing too!

thick veldt
#

Or worse ones! "looks pretty good, but the neck lines gives away any attempt to hide their true age" "biceps still quite sword-capable but floppy tricep meat show their real age" "looks like they eat a lot of fiber to stay regular"

This thread got me thinking... are there actually upper limits to what a character's age can be? The upper limits for all of the races on the lists is just a question mark.... so could a person use AGE SET to make a human 500 years old (or older)? If there is an upper limit for each race, what happens if a character hits it? Does their age roll over to the minimum for the race? go demonic? get a free age reset?

heady dagger
#

i bet someone who made a max age character in '92 could be a 130 year old human, I wonder who has the oldest human character out there

rare star
#

Funny story there.

Back in the pre-GS4 era, your character's age was determined by their level... rather than any date of birth or passage of time.

So the mega-high level characters were OLD.

#

And there was no level cap back then.

untold blade
#

yea, I remember choosing your own age becoming a thing.... it was either just before or just after the switch to GS4 (I know it had its own news item, so it wasn't part of the actual switch)

#

a bit over 2 decades should have been enough time for someone to reach an age limit if they set their age sufficiently high with some races back then.... whether or not anyone actually tried to make a human/aelotoi 110+ years old I have no idea (for some reason it feels like a max age would have to be around 125-130 years for those two, if one actually exists)

I’m sure it’s been said but we have to remember we are in a fantasy setting, the average lifespan of a human in medieval times is significantly different from modern times. Mayan while we may be in our 40’s and look and feel great.. 36 was consider old age in medieval times.

quasi lake
#

We're not in medieval Europe. We're in a fantasy game.

#

What was the lifespan of the average elf or gnome in medieval times? What was the lifespan of the average aelotoi during that time period?

rare star
#

And people didn't age more quickly.

A lot of the average lifespan being in the 30s was skewed by high child mortality rates.... and inability to treat disease and injury.

If a person actually made it to adulthood, living into the 50s, 60s, and 70s wasn't THAT uncommon. They were not 'stooped with age' at 44 years old and a 36 year old was not looked upon as an old man. They were just a regular adult.

There is also a lot to be said about lifestyle. Your average medieval peasant lived a rough life of hard labor. Your average Lord or Lady did not.

Elanthia has the benefit of magic stones you can wave at people to cure them of debilitating plagues, too. And it actually works.

untold blade
# quasi lake There is also a lot to be said about lifestyle. Your average medieval peasant li...

I'd actually argue that the lifestyles of the nobility not only made them age at least as fast as that of the peasants, but also made them less healthy over-all. Their more sedentary lives, much more heavily meat-based diets, and constant exposure to toxins from the cosmetics and even some of the clothing they wore made them prone to diseases and chronic ailments that were rarely present among the lower classes..... not to mention all the in-breeding that went on in the higher ranks of the nobility

quasi lake
#

I'm not so sure. There's a big difference between poor nutrition and exposure to toxins (which is still a thing in our modern era), and being subjected to starvation conditions and ongoing, constant hard labor. Regardless, it is a moot point. I don't play a human, I play an aelotoi which is a fictional race. And the humans that do exist in-game have powers beyond our reality.

#

And I'd still love some official word from staff on the matter.

hardy shore
#

You can infinitely stay 0 and look really young forever… you can also purchase an age change potion for 50 Simu coins. What more do you want? You already mentioned it’s a fantasy game and you are an aletoi so why are you even comparing your age descriptions to your actual age? Come on let’s be real folks.

quasi lake

I am aware of all of these things. What I want was communicated above already. Have a nice day.
