SMR is like the great equalizer...have amazing gear? LOL OPEN ROLL

cold ridge
#

Well he said as much in SimuCon

#

He talked about how folks try to be numerically unstoppable and SMR is one of the ways that counters that.

I actually like it. I like the idea of a “punchers chance” of something going wrong.

three is the same as two plus broodtenders, it's really the strandweavers that set it all up (much like the wargs who are the ones who really put you in peril in HW).. three at least is a symmetrical map so you can move through on memory alone heh

# cold ridge Yo is there a drought on Gemstones in the Hive? All those rocks and gems and I ...

I found my only one not in the easy week in the hive.

I would actually bet that there’s probably a higher rate in the hive in other places. The problem is that it’s probably a higher rate per search, but the relative power level of critters in the hive and the fact that a slightly lower spawn rate makes the practical application that seem like they get pulled less maybe. Who knows what the actual odds are but a one and 5000 chance when you get to do five searches a minute versus a one and 4000 chance when you get to do two searches a minute I would take the earlier one.

All that is to say who freaking knows man I certainly don’t. I do know that loot pressure factors into gemstones pull rates, and there’s less pressure in the hive.

Oh boy. Probably a very small risk case (might just be me!), but be careful with chainspears in the hive. Apparently they can be disarmed when HURLed (not normally a thing) via the exoskeleton mechanic. Then, via warrior bond the HEAD of the spear returns to hand, which then breaks everything:

Your talon-bladed spear lashes forth to its fullest extent, separating smoothly into long, kelyn-linked segments! With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a ghezyte spear head trailed by a thin kelyn chain into flight.
You swing your spear head at a sleek black kiramon stalker. The weapon rebounds off of the hardened chitin of the stalker's exoskeleton and is wrenched from your hand. It slides along the ground and disappears into the shadows!

This reminds me of the classic idea of the Handy Haversack. It's bigger on the inside than the outside, and when you reach into it, you can retrieve the item you're thinking of even without looking.

Now I'm imagining a cursed or malfunctioning version of the same that always pulls out the wrong item 😆

Good morrow to ye, Hive thread. So I've heard that The Hive is the place to go if you are a square and I want try it out. I've mainly been hunting the scatter and ME. KS warrior. I've tried to peruse this thread and from what I gathered I should beware ravager screams, stalkers will kill me if I'm stunned, there are webs, acid blood...and isn't there some kind of death traps that you can walk into? Bolt stones? TL:DR what should I know before I just barge into the Hive and start swinging at things?

tall plaza
#

You should PEER before moving. Most of the time, that'll be sufficient to spot a trap. There are two types of traps: the first are the boltstone traps, which require you to first SEARCH them out before disarming, either via DISARM, or via any number of spells. The second are the pit/chompychompy traps, which just require the SEARCH and no follow up (assuming you succeed on the roll).

Sometimes, a trap will get you even if you peer.

rotund karma
#

I see. That is the type of info I needed. So what can a warrior with no disarm skill do against a bolt stone if encountered? Can I spell cleave it? Bash it? Or is it just peer and avoid?

I argue that this is NOT mechanics abuse though. I mean live bait is a valid hunting technique in the real world. What would be wrong with applying it to gemstone to periodically trick the bugs into exposing themselves?

Isn’t this the same theory as bait traps for roaches and ants and stuff? Lure them to something that seems delicious but will kill them. Seems like an actual hunting strategy for bugs.

atomic island
# weary quail I argue that this is NOT mechanics abuse though. I mean live bait is a valid hun...

I'm not sure this is even a good idea, given that the stun will tank your SMR defense and leave you open to eviscerates, but if they need an open roll to hit you even while stunned, then I would absolutely classify this as mechanics abuse.

The validity of real-world hunting techniques has nothing whatsoever to do with it and I'm not sure why that's relevant. When it comes to things that earn XP, GMs historically punish no/low risk, high reward schemes.

It may well not be considered as such by the GMs who enforce such things, of course. Not my call to make. But the real-world equivalent has little and less to do with the mechanics of a game.

The construction of the terrace is clearly not of humanoid design, eschewing conveniences like steps and siding and favoring organic shapes with odd elongations. Looking as if it is grown rather than shaped, the stone has wide pores and a faintly translucent patches that are reminiscent of rosin. For EG costume contest yesterday, my character dressed up as a bloated kiramon broodtender and performed a grotesque skit with a parasite weapon tentacles bursting forth, while bashing chunks of rock around the room (rocks being a nightmare in themselves). It occurred to me that few players have ever even seen one of these critters to frame the reference, but it was super awesome nonetheless and I was pretty proud of my attempt to build a costume for it. So, here is the costume.

Due to the stinkbird mask she wears, it is difficult to determine her race...or even whether she is living or dead.
She is monstrous of form. Her features are hidden beneath a red-crested stinkbird mask overlaid in a stalk-patterned black ora filigree, though her deep-set, piercing hazel green eyes shine through. She has thick locks of long, glossy black hair swept clean back beneath a lace mantilla ensnared in glaesine eyes. Little else about her appearance is easy to distinguish.
She has a deep black cuff of finely polished glaes in the middle of her nose, a deep black ring of finely polished glaes in her lip, a faint scar on her neck, and some cross-like blackwork extending from the neck downward past her collarbone.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing a knotted widowwood gorget caging a mirrored pebble of dark hematite, a smooth balsawood idol adorned with a thin broodtender tendril, a structured moire silk gown formed by tumbling bruise-hued tendrils, a shapely girdle of banded onyx silk, a deep black bracelet of finely polished glaes, a bandage-wrapped wooden splint scored with a pattern of branching veins, and a pair of elevated ashen leather boots set on grooved obsidian heels.```

From the conversation today in the last few days, I gather I'm not the only one who feels the hive was a bit overtuned with the recent changes...?

weary quail

The recent changes plus the influx of players due to only 50% rocks. It’s been busy in town center more than usual. New faces.

The hive shouldn’t be this swarmy when there’s maybe 1/5th the player base at max from the other hunting grounds. It’s wild in there these days.

Why did we get rid of rocks? I no longer want this change. lol. Get the rabble back out of here.

weary quail

I’ve been soloing the hive for like a year. It’s worse lately. Don’t know if that’s a bad thing.

#

I’ve got something that i run that checks the room for stalker warning signs and if it has them, then will cast 609 to pull them out so i can kill them to keep them down.

Going to see if i can tackle getting it into big shot. I really think the issue is that the largest groups increase the stalker count.

It disproportionately hurts smaller groups because of how they work where stalkers move between floors when someone gets stunned.

So if there’s an army on the third floor, then a single solo guy on the first who gets stunned, the spawn rate of the army numbers of stalkers ambushes the solo guy.

It’s just 609, 709, and 410? Anything else pull the out of hiding?
