I am trying get a better understand on mechanical vambraces work. Do I need to train that specific weapon type. are my hand still empty if I am using one. could I use a vambrace with a wearable pylon?

the ones that you put weapons in? you'll need to know that weapon type to get any use out of it. afaik the way it works is when you attack or are attacked the weapon gets put into your hand then put back into the vambrace. it's supposed to be fast enough you don't notice

attacking with a weapon in a vambrace uses the same skills as attacking with a weapon. your hands must both be empty to use the weapon. vambraces are vambrace-worn so if a pylon is vambrace-worn you won't be able to wear both

Wait both hands need to be open, even if you don’t have dual weapon unlocked?

When would an open hand monk need a weapon?

Hmm - maybe some manueveres that require weapons? Although I guess Monks are automatically open handed masters

There are maneuvers that can use a weapon: hamstring, cutthroat, for example. Sometimes a melee weapon is more effective than UAC (I'm looking at you, Clash). In groups, a weapon can be more effective for short term damage than the time to tier-up.
IMHO, requiring both hands empty is sad and disappointing. The original post on these said (IIRC), "an empty right hand".
I am finally playing with a set of vambraces on a lowbie, and I also noted that it does not activate for weapon fury attack (or ... melee?) like it does for clash.

I got my vambraces so that my monk could use a ranged weapon with UAC
