Soo freaking annoying and unfun to watch the Round time bar stretch across your screen and being able to do nothing. This won't help pures and semis but being able to berserk through it would be damn nice. GM Coase designed a rather cheesey RT stacking hunting area and its bull.

The more I think about it the more I want to just sell off and walk away.

The solution is to not hunt the Inner Weald. It's among the worst areas in GS. Anywhere else like-level will be better. Save yourself the headaches. It is not worth hunting except for skin farming

Stacked, I was at over a minute of stacked RT a various points watching it tick down. This whole new SMR system is soo unfun. I don't know how I'll get through it with my sorcerer, wizard, cleric etc, because I know my sorcerer currently gets his ass handled to him everytime he tries to hunt in places like that. Celtar only dies once a week to it but damn it's unfun to sit there and watch.

# severe quarry The solution is to not hunt the Inner Weald. It's among the worst areas in GS. A...

That's not an a good answer to bad mechanics though and I find it unacceptable every time its thrown out there. Not aimed at you btw Nidal, just at the concept that I should hunt elsewhere. Because if that's the case then no one is meant to hunt that area of the Landing. Irks the hell out of me that basically if I want fun and challenging I need to go elsewhere.

My issue with Elder Scrolls Online for example is the opposite, there is no challenge which gets boring. This is just flat out unfun and that it falls on deaf ears since it opened is bull. I feel that many dev actually have an adversarial approach to game design in GS and it annoys me that I feel this way. Anyhow, combined with my health issues I tend to want to walk away as it being too frustrating as a fun past time. My sorcerer dies daily if he hunts there as an aside with good gear, not Celtar level of gear, but good gear. I guess it's only meant to be hunted in a Bigshot Group or as I usually see capped characters.

Edit: @limber wadi I don't move without peer. They can still get the jump on you. I missed my opener.

limber wadi

when I've hunted there successfully I have definitely avoided anything except solo critters otherwise this can happen - PEER was crucial

I think the Inner Weald is an awfully designed area that needs to be reworked, I agree the outsized RT stacking from low SMR results there are bad mechanics, but at the same time, games are meant to be fun and if you're facing that level of frustration, hunting somewhere else is the way to go. People have voiced how trash the Inner Weald is for years, if they were going to fix it I think they would have. So you're left with banging your head against the wall or hunt something else. I know what I'd do. I have enough stuff that makes me mad, I don't need GS doing it too lol

limber wadi
#

Honestly I don't mind areas that are really hard and require either very careful playstyle or hunting in a group - if someone tries to hunt an area like that without caution and this happens it's kind of expected? Thankfully there are other places to hunt, although admittedly, this level range could use another option.

That being said, I do think there should be some sort of max RT mechanic at play here.

Celtar won't rest until the inner weald is burnt to the ground! (I say let it burn)

limber wadi
#

Your opener had a 26% chance of failure and you decided to 1v2. Even if your opener had worked, you still would have been put in RT by the tree spirit and who knows what would have happened from there.

Just saying this probably could have been avoided by not doing the 1v2. This is one of the few areas that punishes you for that.

There are a number of places in GS that gave me this same feeling of frustration but it ended up being my tactics/inexeperience there that made all the difference.

Again, not saying I agree with such high RT stacking in combat, just playing devil's advocate.

grizzled sun
#

Red forest might be the only place worse than the bowels.

lethal acorn
#

The Red Forest actually predated SMRv2 by a few months and the Inner Weald was still every bit the same experience even from inception. At least in the Bowels, you get insteadeath instead of just wishing for the mercy of instadeath.

Honestly, by the same logic, I can't even really make the case that the original Frozen Bramble was worse than the Inner Weald. That place was the deadliest hunting I've seen by a long shot, but at least it wasn't drawn out.

limber wadi
#

it's kind of swarmy too and your safe hunting strategy is constantly being tested against your patience to avoid the swarms and not overcommit

toxic oracle
#

I feel this.... I'll take an instant death any day over being stunned/RT locked/webbed and plinked to death. Least the insta-death is over and done with, but being immobilized like that gives you just enough hope you might be able to wait it out to make the frustration exponentially worse. Esp if you play a giant with all their HP or an empath with Trolls Blood.

I think web is worse though, esp at low levels when none of the professions have an effective means to get out of them... everything I've fought that's been able to web me has their RT synced up to the duration of the web such that they reapply it just as the first web wears off, so you can't do anything to get yourself to safety even when spamming a command (still have anxiety from spinners and I haven't hunted them in more than a decade). With RT locks you KNOW you're doomed after a couple maneuvers and can go ahead and run to the restroom or grab a drink while they kill you.

Is the loot good in Inner Weald? Or what’s the draw?

grizzled sun
#

Probably, since it's so terrible to hunt. I feel like the draw is people who don't know it's terrible, or who get bounties for there.

lethal acorn
#

No, there is no draw. (At least not in the Landing version. Not sure if the Vaalor version is any different.) There used to be one in the first six months or so of the Red Forest's existence when the skins sold for the price of diamonds, but eventually loot pressure kicked in.

The skins are still slightly above average, but it really doesn't matter when two of the creatures are only good for skins and the third has no skins and disappears fast.

I loved RF when I finally got to the treekin druids/warriors... but even then, the trick was to never engage multiple opponents. The spawn rate is plenty, and it doesn't get too swarmy that you can wander aruond and pick things off one at a time. At least until your above their level and less susceptible to manuevers.

Treekin Druids/Warriors were arguably the wealthiest hunting ground I ever came across in the game. I made more there than I am in Moonsedge.

I recall when Warcraft started nerfing that sort of mechanics due to rogues being able easily stunlock opponents. Being able to keep refreshing Bertrandts Bellow and keeping you in round time is no fun. Add to that the other abilites that the direwolves, bears and tree spirits have all combine to refresh or stack additional round time. It truly is terrible game mechanics design.

Also those who mention Dreamvine. A do avoid it, I won't enter a room with it it normally because it's terribly designed. It can interact with you and you can't interact with it in any way that I've found. We should be able to chop it up or something. Or a spell caster dispel it. Its truly typical of what I feel was Coase's point of view on mechanics design versus players. Adversarial and unfun.

I like a challenge, I wouldn't have overall been a solo hunter for the majority of my time in Gemstone. Now a days I perfer it moreso because I'm not overly fond of the screen scroll that a lot of combat causes. Flares etc. Hard to keep track of what's going on with the massive flare proccing that is the norm in Gemstone these days.

Basically It's not that I don't enjoy the area, its has some good aspects and the challenge can be fun. It's just how some the mechanics play together or combine from these trio of beasts. Coase isn't a dummy, knew damn well what he was designing when he gave these three creatures their abilities. There needs to be tweaks to mechanics like this, less spamming of their nastier abilities. Less chance of the climbing stunlock/round time refreshing gaining crap.

Also, It's a bit dismaying to have a creature that's three levels lower having such a great bonus to put you into round time with an ability that belongs to your guild. I saw the impact of that even worse with my same level sorcerer, they pretty much can't fail it feels like. Versus my warrior the bear rolled a 6 or an 8 an ended up with an end roll of 81-ish. That's pretty grim versus a warrior who was three levels higher. Specially when you look at the stacking round time from their other abilities or mobs. That this trio got through a Dev QC as a solid group to match up surprises me.

Not that this is immediate relief, but I'm told that the disabler review includes maneuvers, and the eventual intent is that both stuns and RT would refresh, but not stack, up to 30 seconds.

@astral harness y Do you truly think that's what i'm doing? Seriously? I'm trying to have a rational discussion about bad mechanics design.

@hollow field That stance is a really bad debate stance when you consider that those levels of hunting are slim in options. Moreso for undead. I'm debating it because it is bad mechanics design, no matter what you think and others agree. Heck, in a way you agree because your stance is to go hunt elsewhere. Which ignores the problem.

hollow field
#

No, my stance is that it's not bad mechanics. I think it's challenging. I think that some professions are better than others at overcoming those challenges. I think that hunting in a group is a great way to overcome those challenges. I think that if the devs choose to spend time working on "fixing" this hunting area -- independently of whatever type of changes go in with the disabler review -- instead of adding new areas would be, in my opinion, a mistake.

And there are plenty of hunting options at that level, especially for undead! I don't know exactly what level you are, but you're right around both the Citadel or the Den of Rot, which are two of the best undead areas.

And, if you're debating it because you say it's "bad mechanics design, no matter what [I] think," then you're not really debating it, are you?

frosty canopy
#

I've out leveled the Citadel and I'm under level for DoR. You've offered no constructive counter to the bad mechanics besides "group hunting". So, I guess we'll agree to disagree. I will further add as an aside that I've yet to read anything to indicate that it's supposed to be a group hunting area like you all have in post cap areas, which have been made quite clear were meant to be group areas. This is a leveling area, you know, the other Gemstone.

limber wadi
#

I wouldn't change anything except to put some sort of reasonable cap on stackable RT

astral harness
#

@frosty canopy I'm just teasing you. Sorry if it came across as mean-spirited. I agree that it's a bad area. I would hunt it from time to time because I'm a sadist and get sick of steamrolling everything like-level, but I'd love to see it adjusted, leaving it difficult but less "cheap"

frosty canopy
astral harness
#

But I also think it's tilting at windmills (glad we both used this analogy) at this point. Seems like hunting grounds are something that only Auchand takes on these days, and the priority (understandably) appears to be post-cap and FWI. I'd also love to see level gaps filled in Solhaven and RR and just leave Red Forest as a curiosity. A monument to poor design

frosty canopy
#

I think I was fine when i came back but the health issues, the errors of surgeons everything that went into that has made me more short tempered. Add to that, the 60 mile one way trip to the game shop was a burn out and yet I miss tabletop gaming in person, but the traffic around here has become just unbearable. a 45 minute drive often takes upwards of a couple years. I'd be able to deal with GS easier if I had still had my tabletop fix. lol I guess I might have to start playing some LotRO again, maybe they've gotten the latenacy issues fixed or lessoned. lol

I mean, I just don't hunt there, but I am firmly of the belief that it's terrible outdated game design.

hollow field
# frosty canopy I've out leveled the Citadel and I'm under level for DoR. You've offered no cons...

You're right - I wasn't providing a constructive counter, other than grouping, to what you call "bad mechanics." I wasn't trying to. I assume that by posting here (with a not-so-thinky-veiled threat that this sort of mechanic makes you want to quit), you were hoping to convince the powers that be to change something. And that's good! That's what the forums are for. Similarly, I was offering my opinion, which is that I hope nothing changes, because I like the challenge that comes with this design. And that's also what the forums are for.

Mechanically, my two cents are that I don't care if I die from a 40s RT lock or an insta-gib spell - a death is a death, and I don't find one any more frustrating than another. Maybe it comes from the thousands of hours I spent playing DAoC where enduring long, unbroken CC is a reflection that I did something wrong. Moreover, I think my tolerance for dying in this game is probably much higher than others', whether that's on a post-cap character (of which I have several) or whether it's on a pre-cap character (of which I also have several), playing the "other Gemstone," as you call it.

If you'd like some suggestions to overcoming what you view as bad mechanics, here's my uninformed take. You've chosen to play a challenging build in a challenging area. You'd probably do better if you dropped KS and relied on the invoker. It seems like you're already avoiding 1v2+, which is good. If you're PEERing around every corner and still getting stomped, then I don't know what to say! Maybe this is not the hunting area for you. I've taken characters through there that did fine and others that got stomped. That's just how it goes.

quaint edge
#

I agree stacking RTs is a bad mechanic. It's not unique to the Red Forest, but certainly there are critters that make it stand out. Some mechanics (stagger?) will refresh, but alot of "other" types of RTs will just stack up endlessly.

It would be nice to see some max threshold for how long you can be in one continuous RT, or any other number of possible solutions. Never saw much positive feedback on addressing it sadly.

As a warrior you can try using Yowlp to assist with SMR defense vs the bear roar. Not a solution or barely even a bandaid. I'd treat it like Moonsedge. Carn's cry everything (assuming Griffin stance) and avoid staying in rooms with non-CC'd critters. Not perfect, but hopefully reduce the frustration.

frosty canopy
#

@hollow field @quaint edge Appreciate the responses and points of view and of course advice. On the 1 vs 1, I don't get stomped, there just feels like a lot of luck in whether you do well or not. One missed tackle or warcry and if a critter spawns, or wanders in (which happens more frequently then I like, the spawn rates there are kinda crazy) or the damn Dreamvine (an ice age herb btw) spawns while your in RT you are more than likely tossing dice as to whether you'll get out of there.

Also still feel it's really bad mechanics challenge design that Dreamvine can not be interacted with at all. Again, these are my opinions based on the last thirty three plus years online playing numerous online games and playing tabletop rpgs, wargames etc dating back to the mid 1970s. I try to not up hunt by more than a couple levels as an aside, which is why the Den of Rot is not on my hunting list... yet.

Basically my short list of issues with the area and I'm trying to look at this from the point of view of playing various professions or wanting to play various professions through the area.

01: Hunting areas of that level range in the Landing which include undead aren't exactly common, nor are they common throughout the realm. The 60 to 80 range feels a bit off in my opinion for the range of what's available. So this one needs to work better than it does currently. The only folks I generally see hunting here are capped adventurers, with any consistency. That points to a problem in my opinion.

02: Dreamvine, very powerful, can't interact with it to do anything about it that I've seen. Also a note that Dreamvine does need a rename as its a ICE Age plant.

03: The wolves and bears warrior's guild/smr/cman abilties are spammed to often and stack round time or refresh it. All the abilities. Specially when combined with the tree spirits round time generating abilities. Also they feel like they're set a bit too high in power. When a warrior whose 4 levels higher and fully trained in the warrior's guild can get nailed rather easily by them, I feel their set to powerful. A pure will get wrecked versus these abilities.

04: Tree spirits have a magical ability that has no prep time shown that the player can see, not only that but the Kroderine Soul ability to absorb magic doesn't work for it. Which can be devastating combined with the other two critter abilities.

hollow field
#

re: the no-prep part of 04, are you sure they haven't prepped the spell before you walked into the room? That's a fairly common occurrence in other hunting grounds. For you to be certain, you would need to stand in a room, watch a tree spirit cast a spell, and then see it cast a second spell without prepping. I didn't notice that in any of your logs.

re: the KS part of 04, does KS absorb things like spikethorn or other SMR-based attacks? I'm genuinely curious - I have no idea.

Any part of a game that excessively removes agency from the players is bad game design. Period. If the way you make your game challenging is to not let the players actually play the game then you've missed the entire point of making a game. I don't mind stacking RT, don't mind disablers, missed turns, etc. But when it's a core mechanic and frequently locks players out of playing the game, the design should be reconsidered.
