#Rumor Woods - Yierka, Atlas and Hind

Hi all,

I didn't want to make any mount requests over the past year given the situation with them at the time.

This request is about yierka, atlas and the hind, who seem to have gotten the least interesting/impactful/fun of the current 'rare' mount abilities, which is really a defining feature of the rare mount experience.

Both nightmares and unicorns provide fun experiences (nightmares/dreams) for their owners alongside several special rp props.

Roltons are able to be fully customized (no other rare mounts can?) and can also be given cultural designations. Females can be milked for even more interaction and value, and can also find Bugs on Parade moth, butterflies and cykas which are automatically converted into paper or gemstones, bypassing the need for a third item (the bug jar with an upgrade)

By contrast to the above rare mounts, the other three seem to be lacking in in the 'rare' ability and, to me, seem less fun.

Yierka can change colors, but often don't, do to it being triggered by an ambient that may or may not happen, particularly if you are moving from hunting grounds, to towns or just traveling in general as you swap room climates swiftly.

Likewise, yierka generate bait worms, which seems a very odd choice in retrospect for an animal linked to a landlocked, desert culture. I can personally attest that I honestly just leave the worm the very few times it shows up for me, because I don't fish and I doubt a great many yierka owners (if any) use these bait worms at all.

I don't want to speak to the experiences of hind users and atlas users, but they seem equally bland. Hind generate bark, which is one of the most common and easily foraged things in the game. I recognize it is tree specific, but even then, that is often not particularly meaningful since all trees are common fodder and the bark itself doesn't confer its species to any item I know of.

Lastly, the atlas can drag up a foraged plant, something the player can just do themselves.

Thanks for reading and considering the above 🙂

Does the bark work for ranger amulets? (Usually those keep the species name/bark qualities as part of the transmogrification) (usually but not always and of course some don’t work at all)

wooden pecan

i believe they do work for ranger amulets. I don't own a hind and didn't want to speak for their owners, but it looked pretty bland in comparison.

I'm actually quite happy with the bark generation. I rarely use it for any ranger imbeds, but it's a nice feature. As fully useful as rolton? No, but I don't think they all have to be on par with each other either.

Edit: It's also worth noting that the bark they generate isn't forageable in that fashion, i.e. player foraged bark doesn't retain the tree's type (at least I don't think so...)

Awesome. Glad to see you are happy with the hind! I am speaking mostly to the yierka ‘rare’ experience, which feels very disconnected from the climate and cultural origins of the creature.

Though i do think a certainly level of parity would be nice to avoid ‘mount creep’

they should make the bait worms of the yierka give a big bonus to fishing

I’m very happy with the hind/hart. This is not to say I would not be over the moon with some fantastic update. I would love any extra updates. Frost is beautiful and majestic and I love his withering looks.

The only feature creep I would love for Hart/Hind would be an added ambient to other stag mounts to bow their head to a hart/hind in the same room randomly 😄

We got some pretty gunho fishers It would alteast make the monthly drop valuable. then again value creep might sour it all

Maybe an update to the worms to be bug jar options like the roltons make (since gem bugs can be fishing lures too with a jig and line) would make them a little more valuable.

I wonder what the actual bait list is. Ive only ever gotten a tomato worm and yellow caterpillar

I was working on compiling a list when the mount issue today surfaced.

Also, it appears that the bait isn't all universally for "all levels" as the earthworm my yierka finally dug up in a different room was only useful for the depths.

Thanks for the list! I'll add it to the wiki for them.

So nothing for Subterranean terrain? That explains why I had 12 hours of nothing.

torpid kindle

Correct. Hard/Flat surfaces and Subterranean don't have things.

wooden pecan

Its also a hard one, because you have to be in the wild for an extended period for any chance of these to occur. No idea if that is true of other rare mounts, but if some rare mounts can trigger their special thing in town, while resting/rping and others need to be out in the wild doing nothing else, thats a distinct and meaningful difference imo

inland flare
#

Is Steambank/Beach for two terrains? There is a "riparian" terrain and also a separate "sandy" terrain when you use SENSE.

Adding to Ptolemy's note, 99% of towns are flagged as "hard, flat" terrain, which is likely why he's seen it so little. And the second most common flag in towns is "cultivated", which explains why he only sees the green tomato worms.

torpid kindle
#

Hind/Hart can only see their's in the wild.

#

Riparian is covered in one of the other ones -- I forget which but it is covered.

For me, a decent chunk of the value of the extra expense of a rare are these special actions. Currently, at least for my yierka, those may as well not exist. Unicorns/nightmares and roltons seem to get significantly more value here for the same ‘feature’

inland flare
#

When mounts turn back on, I'll see if I can confirm which is the duplicated one that shows up for riparian, unless that's something you can easily check before I get to that point. Thanks, Thandiwe.

As a side note, if something were added for "hard flat", I think it'd be hilarious if it were a cockroach or a maggot or something along those lines. Similarly, I could see some sort of centipede or millipede for subterranean.

wooden pecan

I wouldnt mind some random village ‘debris’ or something. Anything can be bait. Id happily take a broken bottle, half eaten sandwhich, etc. like a bear rummaging through the trash. Id rather not have another worm

inland flare
#

Haha! I just noticed that some are bait and some are food. That's hilarious.

I agree that bait worms are pretty useless, but isn't there always going to be something better? That's Gemstone

wooden pecan
#

Well…when unicorns got dreams, nightmares got nightmares. Just asking for it to be evaluated after a year of use and not much value from the yierka’s rare features (color shifting and worms)

Speaking of "that's gemstone", I just did the thing I hate where people poo-poo someone's suggestion rather than offer a constructive alternative. Sorry!

wild olive

You were totally fair and correct. Always something cooler coming down the road!

#

Always! Rare Mounts in general are 100% rp. Looking at my yierka, i dont see how he’s ‘better’, rp wise, then lesser lizards. More verbs, absolutely. But less customizations and rare abilities that dont work in practice.

Compared to roltons and uni/mares, its a noticeable gap imo. Again, based on a years usage.

inland flare

I have added the list of worms found to the wiki for lizard mounts under the yierka section. Hopefully that helps those looking to find something gross to eat or fish with.

I can't wait until next RW when they release massive serpent mounts that shed +5 DB skin hides

All rares get at least 5 additional ambients, 5 additional verbs, and a rare ability. Some rare mounts have flexibility in their features (such as the rare tortoise and roltons), because those particular creatures have a lot of leeway for what can be done with them. Some rare mounts do NOT have this flexibility because of their already determined lore, and this includes yierka, harts, hinds, nightmare steeds, and unicorns. Their features are totally unique (not shared with the common/uncommon) but cannot be changed much, again, because of their lore.

The nightmares and the daydreams are in essence merely extra ambients. They are cool and special, but they are just ambients. The nightmare steeds were given this retroactively, which we don't always do, because it did fit so perfectly with it.

Now, I understand that you do not like your yierkas' rare ability, and that has been heard. Right now, at this time, we are not looking at changing it. We are always looking at improving experiences, and sometimes that means that new releases can seem "spiffier" than things that came before. I've added your thoughts that the yierkas' rare ability is lackluster and dropped something into my list of things to look at later, but we are making no promises for updates/changes. It was the announced ability and people purchased it knowing the ability.

Most people really purchase the mounts for reasons other than the rare ability, which is meant to be just some quick fluff item for roleplay, and fishing bait is that.
