only I ripped off the sleves and split the skirt for function and mobility.

#

and it's cold in icemule so added the lambskin..

Which to me this looks like an undershirt and could potientially add a corest to define the bust and pants to keep the legs warm. I don't know ya'll .. maybe I'm too outside that box.

hehehe perfect.. "A houppelande or houpelande is an outer garment, with a long, full body and flaring sleeves, that was worn by both men and women in Europe in the late Middle Ages. Sometimes the houppelande was lined with fur." So the lambskin isn't out of place!

#

So looks like I need to find some actual undergarmet. Opalina's running around layerless in a destroyed Houppelande.

it would stand to reason that Opalina does not fit in at court and within high society. Mearly a gutter rat posing as an important public figure within a tiny growing hamlet of Icemule. Tomorrow (Thursday) at 9pm ET, Elanthian Elegance and other Fashionistas will be in Ember Ridge Orchard at Naidem (map room 122/u8083160) providing assistance for anyone that needs help prepping alteration ideas for Merchant Week - Don't be that person in the merchant line! Bring your stuff, your vague ideas, and your cries for help. Don't worry if you're late - I'll definitely stick around until at least 10pm ET, later if there's still anyone needing help, until my brain goes mush.

(Yes, this is the same time as the first GHOUL games, but I can't really make any other time commitments before our 3rd session on Monday afternoon.)

I'll be there I could use all the help I can get. I mean the above evidance speaks for itself!

It goes on top of other clothing, normally attached to belt. In court dress it was normally a pelt, or bag or pouch that covered the front of britches (laced up zipper area). Kings/duke's and other members of court also often had "fancy" ones meant to enhance the appearance of the area (likely why the labyrinth gif came up when googled)

Just to provide some context on that, I have a suit of moonlight veniom armor that also inspects as being made of veniom. Combat gear cannot be made of veniom, so despite a reasonable alteration request to the item, the merchant was uncomfortable with keeping it "veniom armor" thus declined to work on it.

Igges shows you a pair of gold-webbed red obsidian earrings dangling contorted macabre figures, which he is holding in his right hand. Upon closer inspection, the earrings reveal a striking contrast of elegance and horror. The cardinal-hued obsidian shards ripple with an otherworldly sheen, alternating smooth planes with jagged edges. Thin lines of gold trace along the ridges, forming a gilded web. Dangling from the shards are contorted figures bound by fine gold chains, writhing in silent agony, locked in the earrings' dark embrace. The earrings exude sinister beauty, combining luxurious craftsmanship with an ominous aura.

Would something like this be possible for a sware for Opalina?

3rd person: Opalina curses under her breath, her eyes narrowing as ghostly heads swirl briefly behind her, their whispers echoing with disdain.

Targeted 1st: You curse at (target), eyes narrowing as ghostly heads swirl angrily behind you, their whispers haunting your words. Targeted

3rd: Opalina curses at (target), eyes narrowing as ghostly heads swirl angrily behind her, their whispers haunting her words.
flat matrix
#

No -- the targeted is "You swear at (target), (-ing version of verb) (curse)

#

So...."You swear at (target), cursing under your breath..." so you have to make sure whatever you append after the verb works with that targeted component, and that's tricky sometimes

#

you also can't use pronouns in the (swear component)

#
--No use of his/her
--The verb must remain the same for all three (1st, 3rd and targeted 1st/3rd)
--The substance of the swear must remain the same.

This will make sense when applied to the example below:
1st person: glower
3rd person: glowers
targeted: glowering
Substance of swear: while muttering something indecipherable and twitching violently with anger.

Examples utilizing the above:
1st person: You glower while muttering something indecipherable and twitching violently with anger.
3rd person: Cinderr glowers while muttering something indecipherable and twitching violently with anger.
Targeted 1st: You swear at (target), glowering while muttering something indecipherable and twitching violently with anger.
Targeted 3rd: Cinderr swears at (target), glowering while muttering something indecipherable and twitching violently with anger.

See how the substance of the verb doesn't change, just gets slapped on after the verb? And how it doesn't use his/her at all? All custom swears must follow in this format. Also, for the targeted version, it will always start with "You/Person swears at (target)," followed by the targeted version of the verb and the substance. If you need help tweaking a current idea to fit within this guideline, that's what we're here for!```
#

It's usually having commas in the "substance of swear" that trips people up because the targeted one will then be double-commasized, and that won't work

#

You (curse) quietly before muttering something about ghostly heads.
Opalina (curses) quietly before muttering something about ghostly heads.
You swear at (target), (cursing) quietly before muttering something about ghostly heads.

That's something that would work....because it doesn't use pronouns, and the comma problem is solved by doing the "before" to link instead (note -- AND would not work as link because "muttering" would need to be "mutter" in the untargeted version).

This also removes the magical/mystical bit from it, because a swear is...just a swear.

Also, this is a sample only! Just showing you how it might work.

The GM you are working with to design one will be more than happy to work with you, but these are the sorts of tweaks they will need to make.

flat matrix
#

I tend to include all of that in my delayed service mails just to help with the process

worn mica
#

So maybe something along these lines?

You curse under your breath, muttering something about horrors worse than floating heads.

3rd person:
Opalina curses under her breath, muttering something about horrors worse than floating heads.

Targeted 1st person:
You swear at (target), cursing under your breath while muttering something about horrors worse than floating heads.

Targeted 3rd person:
Opalina swears at (target), cursing under her breath while muttering something about horrors worse than floating heads.```
#

I think that's very close to what you had up top

#

(I don't think there's much worse than the scary floating heads they are not happy with Opalina at all so for her to say someone is worse woah.. just sayin that's pretty sware worthy) its either that or burnt tarts. which is the other direction Im leaning toward.

flat matrix
#

It's actually not because of a few things I pointed out already -- it uses pronouns (you, her) in the substance, and the substance does not match version to version (your untargetted is different than your targetted).

From experience, the noun of a helm that coveres both head and neck can be any noun acceptable for a helmet (I have a couple where the neck coverage is described in a show as being an affixed gorget or mesh coif/aventail). However, only a helm with neck coverage can use the "greathelm" noun. I've been told (by merchants) that "warhelm" is no longer allowed (even though it still shows up on the allowed noun list).

The wands last for 4 hours. I don’t see anything specific with the inspect or analyze on the wands to suggest they couldn’t be used, but I’ve never considered using a “temporary” item as fodder

Hoping to get some clarification on black alloy. Had a merchant today state that it was on the list of materials not allowed for alters even with fodder. To my knowledge this has never been the case, so maybe something new? If it is, that works, but my instinct would be to ask another merchant about it doing the work.

However, yesterday when I provided a list of prepared potential ideas for an custom, I inadvertently left one idea in that list which had been turned down awhile back by a merchant with explanation as to why. I was reprimanded for doing so and told that was "merchant shopping" and that it was against policy. So... given the ambiguity of what can and cannot be done, and how so often what's listed in official documentation both in game and in the wiki seems to not comply in practice, and now being informed asking another merchant if they can do it would be against policy, I'm not sure how to proceed without some sort of clarification from staff.

I really am grateful for all the hard work, and all the opportunities, and I do my very best to be respectful, but sometimes it feels a bit like intentional ambiguity across the board utilized in such a way that isn't applied the same to all players, and pursuing options "in-game" seems to make GMs upset. Don't want to break the rules. Don't want to have someone upset. But would like to know if I need to shift gears, and this is the only way I can think to ask without potentially breaking the rules.

brittle coral
#

I'm sorry to hear that you had a hard time w. a merchant. I can share with you the alter fodder link that may help you. Please keep in mind that there are so very many materials and unique things in Elanthia that we do our best to keep up on it. Here is that list for alter fodder: https://gswiki.play.net/Alter_fodder If you were attempting to get a weapon, armor, or armament changed into black alloy, then that would not be allowed as it does require a transmute from Duskruin. However, cosmetic accents should be okay and even jewelry. There are som caveats though. With some of these metals, you need to have actual alter fodder for them and not something that is an 'ore' from DR or a piece of jewelry created by the Mini-Smelter as that simply isn't allowed. I hope this helps.

tulip wing
#

Correct, changing weapons/armor/accessories/shields I've done all with transmutes at DR. This is reguarding only non-combat gear.

Just to clarify on the black alloy, because it's a pretty good example of the line of concepts I've been working on in the past and had plans for moving forward, this was this particular concept:

I have a pair of non-combat fluff gauntlets that have black alloy scales on them. I was attempting to use the IACL fluff gauntlets I bought at EG to alter those to appear to be the same item (but with the option for the "worn" descriptions) by providing the identical original fluff black alloy gauntlets as fodder to alter the IACL fluff gauntlets.

Would that be in the realm of something allowed? I understand particular merchants have their own style and services, but it seems that the intention from the conversation with the GM about "merchant shopping" is to be that when a merchant says "no" that's the final word for all time. I've been told it's on the "no use for alter" list now... so pursuing it farther now becomes an issue. Hopefully the conundrum, and purpose of me following up here on Discord, is apparent? 🤷‍♂️

tulip wing
#

And, to reiterate, this post is just seeking clarification on black alloy specifically (not questioning the rules or perspectives) and explaining why I'm seeking clarification here. If the rules have changed for black alloy, I'm fine with that. It's like I told the merchant I asked about doing the black alloy alter today: if that's the case, then I'll just have to hope for a script-swap merchant to move the IACL script over to the existing gauntlets sometime in the future. I had plenty of other unrelated ideas prepped and ready to go and got some really neat and fantastic work done. I appreciate it! Thanks!

warm steppe
# tulip wing Correct, changing weapons/armor/accessories/shields I've done all with transmute...

hey there Myharl. you'll see that alter 44 has some specific rules about "black alloy" and it being in the reserved list of materials. what this means is that an existing item with black alloy in its description can retain it, but adding it without specific alter fodder is not possible. The non-combat fluff gloves with black alloy scales may be primarily made of leather or cloth, so would not qualify as alter fodder for that. Just because an item has a material in its description does not automatically include it as viable alter fodder. While I was not the merchant you interacted with, and don't know all the particulars in the moment, I can say that there are some surface issues that I already am spotting with the request just from what was mentioned here in Discord.

#

If you want some help otherwise, I am sure people are willing to answer questions here

tulip wing
# warm steppe hey there Myharl. you'll see that alter 44 has some specific rules about "black...

Ah! There we go! That makes sense and clarifies it for me. While I do have black alloy fodder I could have and can use in the future, the original black alloy gauntlets inspect as metal. So, I bet the underlying issue was with that item rather than with creating an item with black alloy in it. Yeah, that makes a huge difference in perspective and is a great nudge to verify. Now I feel better about moving forward with working towards completing my black alloy set with merchants and not worry about upsetting anyone with the request or breaking any rules. Thank you!

modest matrix
#

I wish we could go back to the system of "give the word" "get the word back". All of this "required very specific type of alter fodder" makes things way more frustrating.

tulip wing
#

As a lingering afterthought, it does make me realize how useful having a cert that can be used to add IACL functionality to an existing item might be. Could be a certificate for each relevant item type/worn location. Feels like something that would nestle right in with the Rumor Woods theme. 🙂

If it could be made into a flourish, it would also be neat to see the concept applied to armor and armor accessories.

modest matrix

I'd love a pair of ... scissors? that added IACL just like the jeweler's pliers which add Look at Me.

It's vaguely been suggested as so. And, that still leaves a lot of ambiguity as to what constitutes the suggested offense. I have issues with a lot of those perspectives and some of the weird power dynamics involved, but that's here nor there. Rules are rules. Ultimately, I just want to play the game, tell a story, and have fun. Most days that's totally the case and why I stick around, but some days you wake up with your coffee to get blasted for suggesting a potential color that's been denied in the past. 🤷‍♂️ That was my bad.

trail geode
# frigid grove Is merchant shopping really "against policy?" I thought it was just considered s...

I mean I think this is one of those things where it’s a judgment call. It should be obvious why they don’t want people to go from merchant to merchant asking for the same alteration they were already told is not allowed until they find somebody who didn’t get enough sleep the night before. But obviously there are also situations like Myharl’s where sometimes there is just a disconnect or maybe a GM doesn’t want to work on something without it being like “this is obviously against alteration rules and always will be.”

brittle coral
#

I think there's probably a fine line in what is considered merchant shopping and it might get a bit confusing. "No, I'm sorry, but from a standards, policy, and practice perspective, I can't do this alteration for you." Is pretty clearly a denial. Whereas "This isn't something I can provide or do for you." Is ambiguous. We could certainly be clearer in our communication. I know I try to provide a verbatim copy from the player wiki of why something is denied but even with that as my method, there are plenty of times during the mad crush of EG that I forget.

I get the no merchant shopping rule, and I understand it. I hate to tack a 'but' on here, but sometimes a merchant or Sadie is so blatantly WRONG about a rule, that it makes you roll your eyes and go to someone else. Chalk it up to sleep deprivation during a long merchant session, or just misinterpretation, I guess. It's annoying to feel vaguely bad for finding someone else - especially when you are citing a specific policy to say why their hardline stance is incorrect. (shrug) If it's the RP of the merchant, that's one thing, if the GM is being stubborn over documentation, I prefer to take my item back and move on to save myself stress. I don't want to get into an altercation over a text item.

10/10 we are communicating with a qcer. And when it’s a def no, it’s a def no

boreal saffron
#

Not questioning you, in particular, in my part. Simply stating that it's not worth debating with a live merchant when everyone else wants work done as well. Also, that mistakes get made on both the GM and customer end. Not sure what to make of grey areas that are not outlined by policy, but a QC'ers word would be law. There have simply been too many instances of a GM making a hard stance, then being completely wrong to take anything but what is explicitly written in policy as fact, because GMs have made hardline stances and then been completely off in their judgement.

It's on my mind, in particular, because I've had to publicly point to a policy about some shorts I had from an old event that I was refused on both by a merchant and Sadie. Clearly, it's written those could be worked on. There are other instances of such things. I wish I could say I don't get annoyed and snark a bit when it happens, and I try to work on that and give grace. Maybe QC guidelines should be posted if they differ from ALTER.

tulip wing
#

Yeah, same here. I don't think I've ever argued with a merchant. I can think of a few times I've asked for a quick clarification, but usually that's because I have several other item concepts prepared that might be in conflict as a result. I can imagine how frustrating it would be to be working for a group and the have someone become belligerent. For my part, I'm never trying to "get away" with something, but I may be trying to find a way to realize a vision. I'll take a "no" as a "no" and go back to try re-work and try a different angle.

There have been more than a few times that, after the fact, I've poked around for better clarification from staff and/or questioning a specific policy that I felt was problematic (forums, discord, etc.), but I try to be respectful and careful in those instances not to call anyone out. I'm much more likely to walk away from a spot in a line with a, "Thank you for your time, but I'll pass." (if I fear taking up too much time, and will need more time to repair/prepare the idea) than I am to push back with something I've been declined on. I think it's about respect and acknowledging that everyone there wants to get work done. I'm not going to utilize "merchant time" in debate.

My experiance thus far has been pleasant and wonderful OVERALL There are a few merchants we are roleplay a little less friendly than others and Im okay with that, don't matter to me none at all. I'm more than happy to help as well if you'd like some other examples. I tend to incorporate mine into verbs, so they are essentially triggers for a wider action. For instance, I have a set of bangles with a KISS EZscript trap that lets me blow a kiss and incidentally mentions the bangles on my character's wrist in the action.

Other people use verbs that relate more specifically to the item, which is also a great way to use your win.

`The creator has also provided the following information:

This is tier 0 Mana-Infused Armor.

Tier
0: a standard leathers with some special messaging

Unlocked verbs: bow, clean, cover, fidget, infuse, knock, touch, turn, wave

The leathers can have the color and adjective of its energy/light customized with a descriptive word or phrase. Various messaging will include these custom settings.

The current setting is:
color: (Unset, will default to milky white - your eye color.)
adjective: (Unset, will default to a value based upon your magical lore training)
phrase: (Unset, will default to a value based upon your magical lore training)
The phrase should also be prefixed with the adjective.

Customization should remain simple, nothing so complex as to require a comma.
Examples of functional customization choices:
colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
adjective: crackling, nebulous, wraithlike, translucent
phrase: crackling tendrils of elemental, nebulous tendrils of spiritual, wraithlike tendrils of sorcerous, translucent tendrils of psychic
In each case, these words/phrases will be placed in front of words like "energy" and "light". Try to keep it to five words or less.`

This is an analyze for a set of mana armor, not the particular ones she is wearing

warm steppe

I think the question was more about that armor shouldn't have a bodice built-in to its description.

vestal glade
#

hmm, illegal alter?

warm steppe
#

yes, we don't "add" items to other items

#

obviously certain things would be part of an armor's construction, but a bodice is not part of leather armor

vestal glade

what's amusing is she is wearing a bodice separately as well, she's a little weird.

warm steppe

that is why we don't do it

vestal glade

warm steppe

I am just saying that any alterer who touches that will probably fix it

so keep that in mind

vestal glade

ok, I think I may have to just sell her on the new armor then. It's lightyears better and seems to fit with the intent

and she can hang it in her locker and chortle to herself about having ample chest coverage.

stoic sparrow
#

This is part of why robes are the superior armor choice, since they can be altered to be basically anything made out of cloth and worn on the torso. Plus, aganjira as an available material!

stiff rose
#

For what it's worth, the way I read those leathers was that the bodice part of it (ie, the chest part) is what is low cut on the leathers, not that it is an extra bodice or anything. That's just describing where on the leathers it's extra sexy.

tulip wing
#

Rubber has been in use for thousands of years. I'm not sure why it would be considered out of genre.

onyx wing
#

Many early uses of rubber date back to ancient civilizations, such as the Mayans and Aztecs, who figured out how to shape rubber into common-use items, such as toys. The material finally gained popularity in Europe when westernization took off in the 15th and 16th centuries.

tulip wing
#

Yep. The dawn of industrialization introduced the modern context with it's varied uses, but it was around, known, and used.

#

But then again, there's a lot of weird QC calls that I don't understand, so who knows. Sort of like the decision to flag quicksilver... which has been known and used for thousands of years, has etymology rooted in the Old English "cwicseolfor" meaning "living silver", and was an integral part of early alchemical mythologies, particularly in western medieval alchemy with the search of the philosopher's stone, transmuting lead to gold, and seeking the "elixir of life". It's probably one of the most "on theme" materials regarding western-centric magic/myth/alchemy, but got the boot. 🤷‍♂️ I think a lot of those decisions maybe end up just being arbitrary and individually subjective, just have to roll with it, I suppose.

warm steppe

The first pocket watch was invented by a German watchmaker named Peter Henlein in 1510
It is widely reported that the inventor of the top hat was a haberdasher by the name of John Hetherington, who in 1797 walked the streets of London in his new invention and caused a riot. There's a big difference in time periods there.

This may not be the final form of the auto-populating list as some of that will depend on the NPC pages themselves.

It was asked about in general the other day, so I wanted to note that this was what I meant about getting the list set up so it's easier to find and navigate and won't have to be updated manually as new shops are added/updated.

Hey guys. So, I won a bolt of aqilorn and as a Vaalorian, I actually want to use it for my character. I am working on something, regal, Vaalorian, high-collared, masculine... probably a cloak or longcloak. I want to ensure it's apparent it's Vaalorian and could use some thoughts on a good approach to a description and show. I've never really approached alterations from this angle of socializing the idea, but would love to get some input. I don't know if this becomes a community event, or if I just get DMs. LOL

vestal glade
#

The cloak is a masterful blend of silver and blue fabric, radiating a sense of elegance and otherworldly beauty. Its surface shimmers under the light, transitioning seamlessly between luminous silver and deep, celestial blue tones. The cloak is long and flowing, designed to drape gracefully around the wearer.

A finely crafted hood crowns the garment, offering both functionality and a touch of mystique. The edges are adorned with intricate silver embroidery, featuring swirling patterns reminiscent of constellations or ocean waves, enhancing the celestial aesthetic.

The material itself has a reflective quality, with folds and creases that catch the light, creating a dynamic and magical appearance. The balance of cool silver and rich blue evokes a sense of regality and an air of the fantastical, perfect for a figure of importance or mystery in a medieval or fantasy setting.

Change the silver for Aqilorn and you're gold..er...good to go.

The whaling harpoon might be an auction item.

But the mere existence of a whaling harpoon (auction or not), implies that a fishing spear can exist... at least the logic in my head goes that way.

I would think that because a whaling harpoon was approved, via auction, it would mean that anyone could use a whaling harpoon as a noun. It just might not be as fancy as the auctioned one.

Or am I way off track there?

warm steppe
#

Auction/scripted items designed with a specific description are not “the rule”

#

They do not set any standards for alterations

Because you see something in the game does not imply that alter rules change accordingly

thin garden

I see what you're saying, but feel like that's kind of different though, based on the mechanical differences of a chain spear.

Timbalt, you could always just alter it into a barbed spear with rope tied to the end, heh

neon spindle

just for reference the whaling harpoons are from a hurling bando

which leads me to believe they were altered into that..

just seems like its a thing.. fishing is a big part of the game, people have always(and still do) use fishing spears

just my 2 cents..

tulip wing
#

Several times I've asked for something and been told it's not doable, only to watch two weeks later another merchant make it for another character. As long as rules are arbitrary and subjective in that way, I call BS on "merchant shopping". I'm 100% on board for not arguing with a merchant when told no, but this weird thing about "my say is final" just doesn't vibe with the reality of GS. There's not a single item in the game that a GM at some point didn't make. I'm not going to feel bad about asking around for what I'd like to have, even if that means finding a cool compromise. But don't think anyone should be getting shamed for wanting something cool. Not to mention, there have been more than a few instances where GMs have been wrong about official lore/rules (they're human, it happens). The reason I think it's less than productive to ask in here is exactly because its so arbitrary. GMs don't even agree on what is or isn't allowed.

slender epoch

Fishing may have a part in the game, but you can't use spears (or bows) in the fishing system.

neon spindle
tulip wing
# neon spindle yeah foolish me for believing stuff had progressed.. clearly hasnt

I mean, it's not even that. I actually think that's a good thing. It brings a diverse filed of creativity. If a merchant isn't comfortable doing something, they should 100% be able to say no... for whatever reason they want (and not get a ton of pushback/whining about it). But the weird lashing out at people asking around really bugs me.

It's really prevalent and where a lot of the impression of "favoritism" comes from for obvious reasons. Weirdly that inconsistancy doesn't even bother me. I've always been one to nod and move on to my next idea, at most, ask for clarification. I just get worked up when people get yelled at for what I guess we're branding "merchant shopping", especially because it feels bad to be told no, and told that asking another merchant would be "against policy" and then watch someone else get it. That's incredibly unfair, and I understand why folks get jaded.

warm steppe
#

it is also not true that we ageee/disagree. There are standards and some GMs have not held those up in the past

#

They are not held in high regard for doing that

#

Merchant shopping is when someone gets an alter denied and then tries to get another merchant to do the same thing later on

#

That is not allowed

#

At all period end of story

If there are inconsistency issues then those need to be addressed

Also a fishing spear would be a terrible weapon

warm steppe
#

No you can’t just attach a purpose in an items description unless it is approved on the list for that item (see wiki) or it is scripted to allow that with specific approvals within the script

#

There are some rare exceptions to this rule if you read through our alter guidelines. E.g “a wizard’s hat” because those have clear distinct historical references and are approved

#

Hence you cannot make “a rogue’s cloak” because that isn’t a thing that is specifically known in history. Also why we no longer sell “a miner’s pack” on Teras

#

This information is all in ALTER which you should read front to back if you want merchants to work on something without a constant back and forth of what is already outlined there

neon spindle

before i spend alot on the fodder.. could i make the chain on my spear imflass alloy/mithrl alloy? since its decorative?

Nope, both are disallowed now. They still show up in the treasure system, but can not be used as fodder.

neon spindle

sure? i was allowed to use mithril alloy fodder on my last alter i had done

tulip wing
#

I asked and was very specifically told no. Was even given the example of it still being in the treasure system as generated jewelry by the merchant when denied. But, you know... arbitrary. (leaving before I get yelled at).

coral aspen
#

ALTER 44: Tacking "alloy" onto the back of a metal's name is not permissible in alterations. For example, a merchant will not make your "silver band" into a "silver alloy band". Items that already use those naming conventions may keep them intact for alterations, per ALTER 9. However, unless an item's underlying build is made of "black alloy" or "white alloy," removing the "alloy" terminology from a metal is perfectly acceptable.

neon spindle
#

im not making up materials.. theres 3 pieces of imflass alloy for sale

coral aspen
#

That is where ALTER 9 comes in

#

Additionally, the treasure system is old. It is not a good example to use.

neon spindle
#

i dont understand what my answer is supposed to be..

coral aspen
#

ALTER 9 accounts for situations where an item exists that currently goes against ALTER rules. For example, if the treasure system spits out an offending item that is "mithril alloy," you can continue to have that item altered and maintained as "mithril alloy." However, you cannot alter it to "imflass alloy." Additionally, if you alter it away from "mithril alloy," you would not be allowed to alter it back to that.

The same goes for other alteration requests.

flat matrix
#

ALTER 44 covers alloys. There are a lot of pre-existing items that break this rule, of course, but it's what we have had in place for years now.

Updating the treasure system, which regularly spits out things that don't quite conform to the rules, is a beast in and of itself.

What Xeraphina is saying is that if you already have something with it, we won't change it. But it can't be used for fodder, or shouldn't. If it was, it's probably because we, as GMs, are also human and will make mistakes.

#

I know that it feels arbitrary, even though it's not. We recognize that.

There are so so so many things that are solidly within the guidelines, however, that I'm hoping you can find something that works.

neon spindle
#

well there goes getting my decorative chain made to something cool..

flat matrix

Again, there are so many things solidly within guidelines, you shouldn't have an issue

Would it have to be two alters and it's just mismatched for awhile? I believe the customization only comes into play when wearing or removing (probably some other verb traps I never think of)

But this goes back to there not being a one size fits all term that applies to various bits of data not strictly the long or show

upbeat pendant
#

Yeah so in this case, there were customizations for the material, the hood and for the sleeves.. changing the material makes sense, but I suppose it could go either way for the hood and sleeves (I didn't ask/want to change those)

#

long niche

Right. It is a custom but it's a required part of the alteration, so it's not considered a separate customization request. The hood/sleeves I would not have updated since that wasn't the base material.

We don't want to have it be a sleeveless hoodless wool robe and also a deeply cowled long sleeved gossamer robe

long niche

if the long had indicated the material of the hood (which it did not), then the hood customization would have also been required. The general rule is just to update any custom fields that contradict the new alteration.

The way it used to be: If a material was in the base description of the item, it could be used as fodder. Normal ALTER restrictions apply. (easy and straight forward)

The convoluted way it seems to be now: The item must INSPECT with the base material to be used as fodder. Except for rare fabrics and rare non-magical woods (which INSPECT as "cloth" and "wood" respectively). Gemstones that INSPECT as rare or higher must have the gemstone supplied (as a gem, chrisms or items just with the gem in the base description cannot be used). Items intended as alchemy ingredients cannot be used as fodder. All dye additives must be applied to the desired dye color and the resulting dye provided. Treasure system items may be used as fodder except for: alloys, magical metals, and (sometimes) collectable items. Base material for any mechanical item cannot be changed except by HESS transmute (this includes things like turning non-magical wood items into ko'nag or nightwillow, etc. It also includes fabrics on armor robes such as turning cloth into spidersilk). Materials in the new class of "fodder specific" items with the release of the antiquarian can be always be used as fodder, but sometimes items that inspect as a material that are not "fodder specific" items cannot be used. Normal ALTER restrictions apply. INSPECT will inform you of some of these restrictions for a few metals (veniom being one of those) which reads:

"It looks like this item has been mainly crafted out of veniom, a very rare metal. It would need to be supplied to be used in an alteration and may only be used as an accent. Veniom is so thin and light, crumpling easily, that it would be unsuitable for use as anything with substance, lending itself better as an accent, like threading and tracery."

neon spindle

warm steppe
#

Veniom is not typically able to be "added" to another item for GALD, due to it having the property of making something lighter. And, since you can't get something made lighter and also alter it during GALD, it is prohibitive and requires a special service like the one provided at Ale Festival.

neon spindle
#

hmm, first time hearing that

warm steppe
#

because it's not an alteration rule, it's a permission to even work with the material

It has been mainly crafted out of veniom, a very rare metal. It would need to be supplied to be used in an alteration and may only be used as an accent. Veniom is so thin and light, crumpling easily, that it would be unsuitable for use as anything with substance, lending itself better as an accent, like threading and tracery.``` there's a lot of these kinda things on playershops, would they work?
coral aspen
#

If it was made using the smelter and ore from DR, no. They are expressly prohibited from use.

tulip wing
#

If it helps, I don't think the treasure system generates veniom at all, so anything like that in player shops is most likely from the artisan system and uses the ore. I have some very old veniom jewelry items, but they just literally have no material listed on inspect so those won't work either. Aside from the DR dig chunk, you're unlikely to find anything recent. The bag-of-holding threads can't be used either. Another source for potential fodder might be old lockpicks? I know some folks have piles of those lockered away.

Hmm... That makes me wonder if those old lockpicks can be exchanged at the antiquarian for "specific fodder".

coral aspen

The script has a built-in capability to customize the long and the show, and that can be handled as a regular service through a merchant.

#

Since that capability is already built into the script and can be handled as part of a regular service, it does not qualify.

#

The service being provided on Sunday is strictly for items that do not have that built into them.

#

Additionally, some items have hard set restrictions based on their script and due to those restrictions, do not qualify. Consider an item that has a hard-set scripted SHOW. An example would be the WoodChopper Box.

Ruby (weapons/armor) is one of those weird materials without much explanation. It dates back to the early 90's. About a year ago it disappeared from the options in the general armor shops, but last time I checked it's still available in general weapon shops. Ruby gear inspects as being made of "ruby" whereas rubies inspect as gems. Can you bug that Fehala? Bota should be allowed.

But boda, we are thinking, is a typo.

I've seen bota for sure - if it isn't Ordim that has it, Ferghal did. But I think it's Ordim, something like a foot-shaped leather bota for the default still container

Definitely Ordim with his foot bota and toe stopper

Yep, Ordim’s still’s default container it creates is the foot-shaped leather bota w/toe stopper. (It also allows him to use leather as a material in the bottle contraption, dunno if it works any other way there)

This is likely just a typo that slipped through QC, though the typo itself was originally mine. Heh. (Bota and Boda sound exactly the same to my screen reader, alas!)

Thank you all! It's an easy mistake to make. When I was Googling, I found a couple boda for sale, and then a blog from the seller as they learned of their mistake. Then I didn't know if it was a GS specific noun or not. I put the bug report in, and Aihan will be very happy to have a bota from his still.

I would love the option to be able to use "rondel" as an alternate dagger name. I do not see any specific country/origin, just "late middle ages" and was used by merchants to knights. They are designed for close-quarter combat and penetrating armor links in mail/chain or getting between weak gaps/joints in platemail. I feel like that would match some of my rogue-y characteristics, especially for getting past armored defenses.

Thanks for the consideration!

Does anyone know exactly how to do a tent alteration via a Sadie Scroll and how many points it is? Looking at the wiki about it is breaking my brain.

tulip wing
bleak nebula
#

Can a GALD merchant alter them? Or is it just Sadie?

golden tusk
tulip wing
#

GALD can do the exterior (folded/standing), but not the interior since it requires QC, I believe. (Again, unless that's changed since several years back regarding the interior design).

golden tusk
#

I was gifted a tent and so I'm looking at it as a long-term project since the pricing is so high on everything.

tulip wing
#

I am curious if GALD can change the default scent for a pup tent. The way that's setup looks very much like a standard customization. Even has the monsterbold on it. I may try the next time I get picked a a merchant.

lime jungle

You can do it through Sadie

golden tusk

[RUG]
[SCENT]
[LANTERN]

lament aspen
#

Rug, lantern, and container are separate items and altered separately via any GALD merchant

#

The trash bin (if unlocked) and the scent are "simple customs" and can be changed via GALD or Sadie under customs for 300

#

The tent exterior is a standard alteration and can be done by any GALD merchant or by Sadie for 300 points for a standard alteration

golden tusk
#

Yeah I'm trying to still understand the interior alteration....

#

and how the PP works with that

lament aspen
#

The tent interior, meaning the room name and room description, can be altered via Sadie for 300 points and has to go through QC

golden tusk
#

and i have to design how a lantern and such interacts in the room right?

lament aspen
#

You can. There are three light options; one with no light source, one with a light source lit, and one with an unlit light source

golden tusk
#

But does that increase the PP cost for the interior alteration?

lament aspen
#

No

#

It can't be separated

#

Most people give a description without a lantern but it usually does reference a light source, like a brazier or torch or something. Without more I confirm and just edit that description to reference a lit or unlit whatever

golden tusk
#

Ok thank you. At 300PP then I'll definitely make this a long-term project for my alt.

The animalistic cowl is suede and inspects as leather. I'm assuming that can't be changed to a cloth (damask) to match my cloak, or the cloak from damask to suede is that correct?

lime jungle
#

That would be a bummer. I was hoping to make mine linen.

#

I thought fluff was more lenient on that kind of stuff. I've converted between those types at a GALD before.

#

Especially since transmutes don't really work on fluff.

#

I don't think?

clever junco

If the item doesn't inspect as armor of any kind, you may be able to change it. I can't remember if the cowls are or not

celest smelt

The cowl isn't one of the armor accessories.

lime jungle

celest smelt

It's neat enough to deal with, but making them match eventually would make me happy, if it is possible.

lime jungle
#

I would agree that if it's the armor variant you're probably going to be more restricted.

#

Ah you said it wasn't. 👍🏻

#

You might also want to test all the different adornment variants in the test server for best effect. My alteration idea made most sense with the feather adornment when it comes to the fluff actions.

celest smelt
#

The test server is a blessing for sure. The cowl adornments and fluff do match best with what I hope for, a cowl/hood with antenna to match my butterfly cloak.

lime jungle
#

It's the example in the wiki fluff actions with the cat ears.

celest smelt
# lime jungle If you want antennae, you might want to check out the headdress with rigid horns...

You 100% had me panicking because I bought the cowl minutes before you posted that. 😆

Went back to the test server and it seems like nod and shake are the only slightly different verbs, but either would work.

nod for the headdress:
A riotous burst of misty green motes dances over the surface of the rolton skull headdress on your head in time to the movement, the luminous sparks of energy spiraling around each of the strips of fleece dangling from the base of it.
and the cowl:
A riotous burst of stygian black motes dances over the surface of the suede cowl on your head in time to the movement, the luminous sparks of energy highlighting the supple stygian black surface of its suede material.

The analyze also says Any merchant can change the adornment, adornment type, and how the adornment attaches to the cowl.
So it reads like it shouldn't be an issue to work in antenna, in theory.

lime jungle
#

Not that it wouldn't work, just thought you might enjoy the extra specific fluff that the horn adornment actions get.

#

Right you can absolutely change the adornment so you could always do that on yours if you like the verbiage.

celest smelt
#

I didn't notice any interaction with the horns specifically. The motes seemed to focus on the dangly fleece strips. I assume the messaging will change if the location changes (attached at base, top, surface etc)

#

It's all a mystery!

lime jungle
#

I think I was of the impression that they were much more different when I tested them. I'm seeing now that they are actually almost identical. Makes me wonder why they have the adornment type then.

#

Did find this bug though:
...the luminous sparks of energy encircling each of the thick turtle shell affixed to the top of it.

#

This was the one I was referring to I think:

tilt cap
...Crackling misty green energy sparks over the leather arming cap on your head as a low grunt fills the air, forked branches of light arc between the tips of each of the thick turtle shell affixed to the top of it.

#

Anyhow they are all so similar that I realized it's not that big of a deal. 😄

celest smelt
#

That makes me think the helmet has two little turtle shell hair buns. 🤣 Could be cute.

I appreciate the input, and it causing me to double check it all. The analyze on them makes my screen scroll, I definitely get lost sorting through it.

My growing list of potential alterations is the real problem now.

"dominant" is too subjective for a descriptor - it should be something more physical. And there is no way to put something where you have 'mighty spirited' so I am not sure what you want there? The easiest way to be sure to get what you want is to just list out what you want as if it's in the ANALYZE. Like Noun: moose, Descriptor: broad-shouldered, Animal Group Noun: mob. There may be people other than me doing this (that have been cleared) and odds are they aren't going to understand what each of those fields mean by filling in the flare messaging.

The white vaalorn claidhmore contains a special flare. It can be freely altered.``` So I am not quite sure what this special flare means, ```It contains Greater Elemental Flares that occasionally double flare with the element of gravity.``` from the recall. The normal vacuum flares seem to have the normal lead in, but the GEF starts as this: ``` ** A nebulous dome of blue ether discharges from a pure white vaalorn claidhmore and engulfs a greater moor wight! **``` So this I am not sure if it is the special flare? And when it says freely alterable, does that mean the flare? And if so, can any GALD do this?
tulip wing
# upbeat pendant ```You analyze the white vaalorn claidhmore and sense that the item is largely f...

The "nebulous dome of blue ether" is the default messaging for the GEF damage cycle messaging for void flares (also known as gravity flares). The standard damage cycle flare messaging should be something like "Your vaalorn claidhmore flickers as the space around [target] folds inward and draws its surroundings closer!" The two damage cycles can happen independent of one another or both can happen at the same time.

That "freely altered" message about the flares shows up on all GEF, and I think just means that it can have custom flare messaging applied to the standard damage cycle flare, which is typically a special merchant service and not GALD. You probably can also use the "canned" custom flares available at DR. As a side note, though, custom flare messages only apply to the standard damage cycle flare messaging, the GEF damage cycle flare messaging will remain the the default.

tulip wing
# lime jungle Or it's something you can't put away at all?

Yeah, some attuned items won't let you put/drop the item. Hoping maybe the locker runners will be a solution. 1) Locker send (item). Then when ready to retrieve to approve the scroll 2) Locker Manifest it back, should get package you can open and it will be automatically in hand. I just don't know for sure that's not blocked by the system and don't have anything to test it on.

lime jungle
#

What do you do after it's altered?

#

It's still always in your hand?

tulip wing
# lime jungle What do you do after it's altered?

It only happens when the item isn't attuned to you. How I read this situation is someone is using premium points on a scroll on their account to alter an item attuned to someone else. So when the scroll is done, they would give the item back to the owner it's attuned to. Same thing happens with some attuned weapons and armor made at DR, I can hold them to do grit services to, but can't put them away. I do the work, then return it to the owner.

#

Technically a sadie scroll just takes an "image" of the item when you write the scroll. After that point you should be able to do whatever you want with the item while the scroll is being worked on (use it, locker it, whatever). You just have to have that same item in back in hand for the final step when you approve the scroll. The the sadie scroll basically deletes the item in your hand and replace it with the updated item based on the image it took. That's why you don't want to have services done to them while a scroll is in process... they're just going to get deleted when the updated item replaces it.

The mithril hilt spirals in a flowing motion, mimicking the orbits of distant stars. A faceted white opal crowns the pommel, silent and unchanging.

The last sentence in each of your proposed alterations would be a no-go, as (except for in very, very specific circumstances) we have to alter items as if they existed in a void, and can't reference their relationship to other items. (Because the other item might not be there, might not be visible, etc.)

One question, Sadie won't be able to get "rare materials" as alter fodder. I was wondering, would the sapphire and opal also be unacceptable?

lament aspen

You can analyze a gem (or inspect? Appraise?) and it will tell you if it is rare enough to need to be provided in alternation

lime cosmos

I got this from analyze
You analyze the fire opal and sense that the item is free from merchant alteration restrictions.

so im assuming that as long as it doesn't have
It would need to be supplied to be used in an alteration
Then its fine for Sadie alterations right?

With the caveat that there are always exceptions — yes.

I want a green color for the Sprite on my weapon and I'm imagining a very bright green like from a glowstick/chemlight. Bright green is the obvious choice, but would there be a more interesting way to word that? Neon green would be perfect but I don't think that will fly. 🤔

Can I use the word "tarpus" for a hat? It's a conical, pillbox-shaped hat that was popular in the Ottoman empire.

#

The closest thing I can find to a pillbox hat in the game is a pill hat for sale at Myra's Millinery in Solhaven.

Kurulus:Osman is another Turkish show that already caused me to design an entire outfit in the game.

So while the general shape of hat existed previously (hence the maybe on tarpus), the term “pillbox hat” is Victorian, into Edwardian.

From about the middle of the 16th century, a woman would probably have called her hat an arakiyye, regardless of style.

Pillbox hats are depicted in a range of sizes, from tiny enough to perch atop your head to large enough to go all the way around your head. The one constant is that they’re wider than they are tall. (So, no fezzes.)```
I found this little tidbit on a historical costuming site as well about women and hats during the Ottoman empire.

While you are correct that in narrative writing, there are times where people may use a fragment for effect, we do not allow incomplete/fragmented sentences in shows. Not saying there are not some errors or perhaps a handful of exceptions here or there, but as a general rule, expect to use standard punctuation and full sentences in an alter.

Working on some verb trap alterations here. I have a peretta mask that is full-coverage but these verbs don't quite make sense. Is the analyze wrong or are these bugs?

(RAISE) You adjust your featureless mask ever so slightly, drawing attention to the secretive smile written upon the curve of your lips.

(TWITCH) Your fingertips trail over the edge of your featureless mask as your lips twitch up in an enigmatic smile.

Is there a way to alter a signature verb's activator?

lament aspen

Not as a player

But there was always GM involvement when it was coded, and now there's a lot of autonomous ways to apply them. I can look at adding a rename option

Sweet, thanks! It's an edge case, and I can make an alias around it too, but just thought I would ask.

How would an alias work here to get around, say, two signature smile options?

quick trout
# lament aspen How would an alias work here to get around, say, two signature smile options?

Let's say the signature verb isn't super indicative or memorable. Example:
signat little - You give Target a little smile.
signat big - You give Target a big smile.
Using aliases I can compensate by adding a more memorable operator such as:
;alias add smilelittle = signat little \?\r
;alias add smilebig = signat big \?\r
which is evoked with:
smilelittle jane - You give Jane a little smile.
smilebig jane - You give Jane a big smile.
