#[Official] Alteration Help
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
Go ahead and add that to your list of issues with the current treasure system
but this is good treasure! Its a great enhancive!
Part of it could still be improved upon
Copper is definitely not dyeable, if it is actually copper.
oh man. offer a cheapo transmute at DR. Mundane metal to mundane metal. I need everything steel!
It has no material so it can be anything.
A disgruntled clerk scratches his beard and nods. He takes your pink dreamstone bracer and your indigo vial of dye and disappears into a back room for a moment, grunting to himself, then returns and hands you a deep indigo bracer.
that surprised me. it was dreamstone. A ruby one worked also. But neither had materials in the inspect
@lyric atlas I think enhancives that are also magic imbeds, or at least blank imbeddables, can be dyed. But enhancives that are otherwise just plain jewelry, or the actual plain jewelry the ROG spits out, cannot be dyed.
Ah. That might track
Ill be honest, this idea solved like 50% of my enhancives
Hopefully i can alter book or gald the rest into compliance
So its a W in my book
Wow I didn’t know about dyeing enhancives. immediately runs to check everything in the armoire
Very cool
Yeah. It was a game changer
Items made of gemstone ARE dyable, I was looking at the wrong thing
I still haven't looked at whatever other problem was doing
Looking for a critique from you fine folk:
This is for a lance currently named:
**a jagged ghezyte warlance inlaid with veins of twisting krodera.
**
Hoping to add a show with something like:
Forged in the boiling crucible of an underwater volcano, this ghezyte warlance bears the unmistakable mark of its origin with it's jagged yet razor-sharp edges. Crafted under immense heat and pressure, the weapon possess an unparalleled hardness and durability capable of piercing any armor with ease. It is strengthened further by veins of twisting krodera that flow down its length and through its vamplate.
Krodera is one of those no no words.
right, does it help me that i got it in the name?
but beyond that... anyone else read this as a guy with a huge phallus?
cause now i can't see anything else.
Here are pretty solid examples of what you should be shooting for - ```an Iyo-crafted firewheel longbow sporting a raw silk bowstring
Exactingly carved from a single stave of highly polished firewheel, this traditional Iyo-crafted longbow elegantly curves around to a height of nearly seven feet. Intricate fractal burns creep from the seamless ebon leather wrapped grip, spiraling along the limbs of the bow, the patterns fading as the limbs terminate in perfectly cut nocks. Numerous single strands of raw silk have been carefully twisted together to form the thick silk bowstring that is strung between the nocks.
You see a gold-veined glowbark siege arbalest which is cocked and loaded with a blade-tipped slender black bolt.
Crafted from a fine piece of glowbark, the siege arbalest has been meticulously sanded, stained a deep black, and polished to a high gloss by a skilled elven bowyer. A narrow channel, dusted with bits of golden fletchings, runs down the length of the tiller. A well-oiled pulley and tackle constructed from vaalorn is designed for the rapid cocking and discharging of missiles.
a diamond-edged slender eahnor longsword etched along the blade with ancient Faendryl runes
This slender sword is wrought of the finest eahnor and is the silvery hue of moonlight reflected off tranquil water. Well-balanced and beautifully crafted, the slender blade is inlaid with faceted diamond and honed to a razor-sharp edge. The hilt and pommel are wrought of fine silver and the handle is wrapped with soft leather to ensure a sturdy grip. The ancient runes etched upon the longsword's blade read, "Bound by honor, bound by duty. Strength, Peace, and Long Life to the elves of Ta'Faendryl!"
a wide-bladed grey high steel warsword with a scarlet despanal pommel
Infused with a charcoal dye, the wide blade has a rich grey hue, while its edges and point have been keenly sharpened. Fitted with a thick eahnor guard, the dark crimson metal offers protection and contrast in equal measures. Soft, supple leather has been wrapped around the handle to provide both a sure and comfortable grip. Inset in the center of the large disc pommel is a piece of polished scarlet despanal streaked with veins of gold, serving as counterweight to balance the sizeable blade.
a split-visored Faendryl close helm
The hammered mithril of this sturdy helm has been carefully acid-etched, bringing a dark, matte appearance to the ordinarily bright metal. Embellished scrollwork, interspersed with geometric designs have been inlaid in veniom, the patterns symmetrically spiraling down from the ornate comb and over the elaborate bevor. The intricate split visor features a sharply peaked design, the rotating halves secured by spring loaded studs.``` Generally you want to describe the weapon without implying anything that wouldn't be visible at a glance/close inspection, like you can generally discern elven or dwarven craftsmanship, everyone has seen what it looks like when the moon glints off water, etc
ill give it another go
Good luck! I hope those examples help!
If I am going to get a set of animal script leathers worked on.
How do I ask that the following gets changed :
- Head Coverage: leather helm
- Neck Coverage: leather gorget
- Arm Coverage: leather sleeves
- Leg Coverage: leather leg guards
can it be altered the nouns or is their a way that the merchant has to be approached tio deal with it
Those are customizations
The item analyze says * Any merchant can change the associated Armor Accents to match the alteration.
Does that mean that not a GALD situation or is there a specific merchant I need to look for
So I think you can just come up with an alter for those that matches the item’s description and then ask the merchant to do it as a customization
That should be able to be done at GALD
this is really helpful
Some merchants will do three customizations as one service, some will do just one
I have yet to have an opportunity to meet with an alteration merchant in game
I would say like “can you please change the head coverage accent for this to ‘a super cool helm’”
Except better than that
Nope thats what im asking for seems super legit and RP
So Im using OWlys super useful alteration template
and when I meet wit the merchant I need to just ask them to set the following items as requested
all of this is of course pending I get picked
I just hate wasting peoples time and also dont want to be unprepared if I get a chance as I fumble
I feel the same way!
No one's gonna bite you. When you have the merchant's time, it's yours.
Promise? If i lose any fingers and cant type Ill know who to point to. Well Actually I wont be able to point but you get the drift
Also if I want to do something like have an animal shaped shoulder guard with gems in it
Do I need actual materials
or will it just be so?
Think something akin to a set of double leathers with a hippo shoulder guard and Ruby set in the eyes
obviosuly I will type moar good for description
Providing materials depends on the rarity of the material
Luckily vanah just updated this system
Ok so If I get the rare gems for like an EB gate and stuff and appraise them it will show if needed for material update
Yes! Otherwise it was kind of "the merchant will tell you if you need one"
NOW YOU HAVE THE POWER
As are we all
Anyone know if eye characteristics have a 15 char limit? i.e. is electrum-specked possible?
it's possible
eye color can also go over 15, but if it does, it won't work with eyespy. ALTER 205 has the details
you can theoretically get it so large though, we would look at you askance and say...no....because it'lls tart looking weird
Now, by possible, I meant for the characters to be >15
ahh thanks - I didn't read that far sorry
electrum is a material
so I probably wouldn't do electrum-specked (gold-specked and silver-specked get a pass because we use those for colours too)
darn - thought it would imply color like gold-flecked, silver-flecked etc
ok thinking!
speckled electrum-hued probably okay?
I would probably do that, yeah
there's no good way to make it speckled with electrum shades though and still use the word electrum, but if you want the primary colour to be electrum, electrum-colored or electrum-hued would work
makes sense, thank you!
Not me!
Can't improve perfection
There's nothing in the game that can strip fluff descriptions off items is there? I have 100 jars I want to rename from "blah-blah blah-blah jar" into just "jar" for improved readability. Only way is to get picked for 100 GALDs?
Does dye work on jars
Probably could
If not does
But it would still have an adjective, there's no blank dye
I think dye works on jars.
dyes seem to work but there's no blank dye and they insist on adding glass to the description
blank dye might be a good thing to have though?
a solvent like for labels
or a stripper box of some kind that takes an item and returns it as just the noun
Why do you want no description ?
it would make the contents of the container with all the jars much easier to read
Items without adjectives cause some parsing issues so was just wondering if that was factored in or valuable here
It helps me to walk through use cases
Yeah, my kilt has parsing issues, and it's a "a kilt of shadowy valravn quills cinched by a silver-shot wyrm's talon sporran". I like it that way, but if I ever pick up a another kilt, I have to remember to use the adjective of that kilt or parsing assumes I'm talking about my worn kilt, even when the other is in my right hand. I imagine a lot of the same would happen. A little while back I did find a way to strip an item down to only its noun, but it caused similar issues, so I bugged it assuming it wasn't intended.
If the item is missing the middle 15 ... 15/0/15 ... it's always targeted first.
sounds more likka "kilt dat hurts to wear"
Valravn feathers: the Elanthian version of Vantablack.
Lightless raven feathers and a hollowed out wyrm's talon to hold stuff.
hm. didn't realize that. guess I should get a new cloak
Is it known if you take an item that is currently DtH/Veolla misc compatible and alter them that they stay Misc compatible regardless of the new noun?
Generally but it depends
What item are you altering into what
Some items are identified as misc at the core and some are noun restricted
I want to turn a misc item (i have a few different ones that work atm) into something like a small mithril sailor
this is all napkin math level atm
like I have a few of the Newcropolis gem drops and they are Misc
turn like a tournamline garland into a tourmaline sailor
something like that
Musc treasure should work. BTW, misc treasure (when you appraise it and it says treasure item) cannot be dyed
hmmm
You analyze your quicksilver globe and sense that the item has certain alteration restrictions. It would need to be supplied to be used in an alteration.
This is another Misc
never seen that message before
It's pretty new
And I did ask to reevaluate quicksilver because right now the alteration restriction is "quicksilver is not allowed as a material"
Can I ask about item customization via premium points on a basketifier here or should I got to #premium ?
Depends on the question... are you asking for help in customizing or are you asking about the cost to customize?
Wondering if the "three facets" can be the basket, blanket, and table?
That's probably best to ask in #premium
Thanks!
in reference to glass, is dichroic or pleochroic too OOG even though they are older words?
dichroic glass was made in the 4th century!
Well that's hardly helpful
But there's a bunch of the term available in game already
that is actually very helpful it's just that the link is terrifying
Ok fair
took me a while to see what I needed to see lol
Thank you both!
ok thoughts on this idea? I saw someon's fancy basketifier table and got inspired
a silver-patinaed teak root table set with a dichroic vaelfyren kraken candelabra
I'm a little confused by the silver-patinaed on a natural root table?
maybe grey ... I read it gets a silver-grey patinae over time but trying to keep the word count down
ahh okay, maybe just aged teak?
"aged" doesn't sell tables! Marketing 101
that's like the difference between blackened and burnt with food heh
silvered?
an heirloom teak root // an antique teak root?
Also I dunno if oh there she is
Can balefire be dichroic?
Have no fear Missoni is here!
i feel like it could be! you just have to layer the glass with oxide
I do like silvered as an option
if you have a better descriptor I'm all ears 🙂
for the vaelfyren... I like the idea of the candle light from various angles adding some dimensional optics (if that's the correct phrase?) to the glass
Don’t forget to use owly to check character count!!
I think patinaed is fine. Wood gets a patina
What is quicksilver anyways. I always thought it was more a description than an actual metal. I'd rock a quicksilver weapon if it wasn't for the damage weighting randomization.
It’s mercury, which is normally not very useful because it’s liquid at room temperature
Well it’s useful for things like fillings or giving people serious nerve problems but not for like weapons and armor
Ah, makes sense. I've only seen a handful of quick silver items. Think there was a self mana or x/day haste quicksilver vial
Not sure what owly is other than someone's owl. I use wordcounter.com and will try my best tho the inspiration table was 13 words and 93 characters haha
https://www.sphericalowl.com/gs/alterations.html Raelee set it up with GS info!
we aim for 60ish characters for OTS longs and we do try to stick around that, preferably under 70 even for alterations. There are numerous examples that violate this, of course, but don't be surprised when someone makes you trim that WAY back. If you are hitting much over 70, you are probably needing a SHOW anyway!
i got it to 11 words and 68 char
The quicksilver vials were just standard haste potions back in the day. If someone more recently made one that was an x/day item, that's kind of awesome.
Quicksilver as a colour modifying a material is perfectly acceptable. Quicksilver as a material wouldn't be without a script or something, because it's got that nifty viscous situation going on.
quicksilver got its name from its use as a way to get more silver extracted from silver ore when firing the ore in a crucible. Its super neat!
are we allowed to have evil eye charms?
As an FYI, I know Vanah mentioned she was going to ask about quicksilver in light of the quicksilver globe gem...the stance on using quicksilver has not changed. The gem itself has been updated so as not to confuse the issue (but the original gem had the quicksilver contained within a crystal, so it wasn't actually a pile of quicksilver in your hand anyway).
As stated above quicksilver as a colour name modifying a material is fine (a quicksilver silk cloak....because it's describing the colour of the silk). Quicksilver by itself/as the material/etc is not.
are the gems allowed to be used in alterations? for example, could we use a quicksilver globe as fodder for earrings as long as it stays encased?
They were an error and are now "a swirling silver globe" so my suggestion would be to not use any you have that came before the change.
oh... i didn't quite understand that part about updating the gem! thanks for clarifying
A bunch of us running around like mad hatters already
How would you describe this offset/asymmetic donut shape in as few words as possible without actually saying 'offset donut'?
contrasting offset sphere/ inverted nonconcentric orb?
nested non-concentric circles?
nested eccentric circles in contrasting colors
Is it supposed to be black and white or does the white indicate a puncture?
I'd say the white indicates a puncture/empty space
But we're going with 'inverted static googly eye' anyway.
(while we have a different use for eccentric in common speech, eccentric in geometry means you don't share the center point like concentric does)
inverted static googly eye does seem best
"an inverted static googly eye looking like an off-kilter doughnut"
your thing housing a perfectly spherical puncture at an askew angle
your thing pierced with a rounded off-center hollow
Maybe something involving the word torus.
You didn't need us this whole time.
Sure I did. "an irregular torus that looks kind of like a static googly eye"
Ship it.
makes a note to use this in the future.
Raelee does like geometry words.
Rohese doesn't like it when Raelee uses geometry words
She just needs to hang out with her more. She'll get used to it.
Clearance sale donuts.
🍩
asymmetrical torus?
Fah who foraze! Dah who doraze!
I keep reading torus as Taurus. You should try. It is all even more amusing if you do.
im looking to enter the tattoo contest for premium today and have an idea in my head for what i want but i am having a difficult time understanding the rules for alterations. would it be okay for me to describe it here and you wonderful people help me out?
Do it! Also be sure to check out https://gswiki.play.net/Alter#ALTER_103:_Tattoos if you haven't already
so i am an elven empath, very fair lily white skin and bright red hair, i want to have a tattoo along my forearm that entwines it similar to vines but i want it to have the appearance of veins. from the veins i would like to have blue flowers growing from said veins that look like flower pedal hearts
And plug your ideas into https://www.sphericalowl.com/gs/alterations.html if you need help making sure it fits
is it a requirement that your long description has your base description inside of it?
It usually does. There are some exceptions if you have the long or part of it preceding the base
"a vine-like tattoo of entwined veins dotted with blue flowers on his/her arm"
i like that.
I have to go back to work! Someone help!
a crimson red pulsating vein tattoo with heart shaped pedals
is what i came up with
You wouldn't be able to do pulsating since it implies movement
ah thats true! back to the drawing board!
It would be cool if you could flex and make it move, like a traditional hula dancer tattoo
an inked, tracery of, veins / blooming heartleaf foliation down her left forearm.
heartleaf is a specifically elven (Nalfein) plant :3
i just looked up pictures of inked tracery of veins and thats pretty much exactly what i was looking for
i really like that
Ooo that's good
Also I like that it uses "inked" so it doesn't need to have the "tattoo" noun
the heartleaf fits perfectly too and it makes it even better that its an elven plant
a crimson inked,Tracery of,veins
a crimson inked Tracery of veins with blooming heartleaf
do you typically need a show as well?
shows are not required but you can add them as long as the merchant is willing to do it
most times it's one or the other but not both
okay so i will just leave it as this then. fingers crossed!
good luck!
thank you both for your help! really appreciate it
For tattoos, we typically will do a show at the same time if you want it, btw
no luck tonight, appreciate the help from everyone though and Xynwen thanks for letting me know. maybe a good thing i didnt win so i can get the show setup as well. was cool being a part of the experience!
It's probably less of a problem now that we can alter them beyond the time they are added (until last year, the rule was no altering after initial application), so we always offered the show at the same time if someone wanted it.
is that for items across the board or just specific ones?
Just tattoos
You can alter items as many times as you want. Or just add a show to an existing design
Tattoos had a rule that you couldn't alter them after you got them, but we updated last year. So our practice was always to do base/long/show together. Now, since you can alter tattoos after the fact (excepting very specific and rare scripted ones that require QC), you may run into merchants who would like you to do the show later. However, I anticipate that most of us would still do it all in one swoop, since that's how we've always done it.
Non-tattoos, we don't typically do a long and a show together at a live merchant, as that's a limited service unless you're using Sadie scrolls (premium).
And there are tons of excellent tattoos out there that don't have a show. It's very much a personal call.
Can flypaper tattoos have their verb outputs customized? Or are they fixed depending on location?
the flypaper itself can be altered, yes, and it has spots for customizing the verbs within specific parameters. I believe the analyze/read gives the details. https://gswiki.play.net/Flypaper_tattoo
I couldn't tell if it was the entire verb output or the highlighted item within that output. Assuming it can't be changed once worn
it's just the highlighted part in the output that can be customized, not the entire line
but the customization can be rather creative (and potentially longer than just a word or three)
Hi all. Looking for a non-scripted, no frills, simple as can be item that fits into a MISC on a DtH/Veolla. Suggestions?
What are you looking to alter it into
Haven’t asked so no clue but is there a general perspective or policy about cloning alterations? Anyone ever had a merchant take the old (assuming value) item to defray the cost of using it as a template for the new cloned item?
I usually see it go this way:
- Player has an unscripted item with a cool alter
- Player has replaced said unscripted item with a nifty, scripted item
- Player wants the new scripted item to look like the unscripted one
In those cases, sure, as long as the item's script allows for it, then I'll replicate whatever the alter was on the first item onto the second. You wind up with 2 of the same-looking thing, but under the hood, they're different (one's unscripted, one's scripted). So then you can do what you want with your original item.
It's important to note this is a cosmetic alteration only. No properties are changing, nothing is being cloned, etc. You had an altered cloak and now have an uber-nifty scripted cloak and you want it altered to match what your original cloak looked like.
If you are talking rare materials and such, then you would need to supply fodder. Depending on the circumstances, that could be the original item.
something from origami? some plants wind up as MISC, too - like chamomile flowers (I think that was the one)
I think ribbons go in there, but maybe they have their own side now, I'm confused there tbh
i had an item I had made into 'a tourmaline sailor' or something like that. It worked great. Another merchant last night declined to repeat the alteration on the same base item because it was part of a puzzle.
So i'm basically looking for anything that fits into the misc that won't get rejected for any script it has on it. I have items that fit, but none of them are script free. Either they are part of puzzles or something similar.
you cannot alter origami. I thought of that too!
Now that I'm thinking about it, I really should to a RW request for blank DtH/veolla insertable fodder
it's also gonna depend on what you can alter into a tourmaline sailor. Collectibles work in the misc side, but cannot be altered. Misc. treasure (like if you appraise it, and it gives you a value and calls it a treasure item) should also be able to go into the misc side, but I don't think like, the bathing maiden statues etc. that come out of the treasure system are categorized as misc treasure.
furs are misc, but can't become a tourmaline sailor
non-flower forageables are misc, but can't become a tourmaline sailor
yeah, I have a pile of gems that are misc
but all of them are puzzle pieces
I had one done with no problem, but I understand a GM being wary of altering something like that
where are they from?
EG Necropolis
I mean those redacteds
yeah exactly
lol
I have like 50 of them
I don't want to come off like i'm merchant shopping when i ask merchants since some are saying yes and some are saying no, so I'd rather see if a differnt option exists
See if you can find a figurine, statue, statuette, etc. from the treasure system that appraises as a treasure item that will work
the hunt is on!
I thiiiink if they contain a spell, they won't work. but if they are just treasure they will
I'm putting all of my trash panda powers to use
and I'm going line by line in my bags
figurine, statue, statuette, miniature
hmmm
You gently place the bark in your plinth, taking care to arrange it just so. You nod, satisfied with a sturdy chain-wrapped plinth connected to a mithril-collared bark.
treasure system tree bark
i guess I could have it carved into 'a wooden sailor' or something
i dunno if you can alter tree bark though
its got no inspect and the analyze doesn't say
alrighty, went through the full inventory of possibles. The only fit so far is the tree bark. Forageable tree bark is also MSC. Just gotta find out if its alterable
The real answer to this is getting flotilla origami with a sailor pattern
well I got plans. Helmsman. Cannoneer. Also some racial ones. Tehir. Elf. Etc. Marines
cough those could all be patterns there
yeah well I do try to be self sufficient and not bother gms if I can do it myself with some weird non-intended use of existing things. Mostly because I'm a contrarian 😄
those can all be patterns....gotta check on my origami updates!
Unicorn drops?
I know what they are but reading that no context is probably hilarious
Sorry, struggling with a headache. Brain is fog. Unicorn drops is all you get
Weavables also go in misc!
(The ones that aren’t already flowers or ribbons)
hmm
so....tooth pullers make weavable teeth......I wonder if I could turn the teeth into stuff
stuff that it makes sense for. Weavable statues might be too weird
I think the statue thing would be the easiest?
you only get bathing maiden statuettes when you aren't looking for them
but the gemshops have statue tables now:
Special [7]: a dark monir Jastev statue, a topaz-inset minstrel statuette, a clay mule figurine, a bronze dancing gypsy miniature, a copper-chased Cholen figurine, a fine monir bathing dwarf figurine, a fine marble ram figurine
Total items: 7
I actually just recently got a dancing girl statuette that went into my misc treasure bag, I think I sold it though. But they do drop
I have "dirty dancing girl" (from EG dig) and "naughty nymph" statues that are buried in a locker because I can sometimes be juvenile and refuse to toss them. Considered trying to use an alter wand to add the design to an unscripted book prop, but it's more effort than I'm willing to acquiesce for a base chuckle. 😆
You gently place the statuette in your viper skeleton, taking care to arrange it just so. You nod, satisfied with an articulated eahnor viper skeleton tangled in a jacinth-inset dragon statuette.
the treasure drop statues are probably your best bet
Also why is that DtH so hot? You still got it, girl.
I thought that was a viper skeleton veola but also thought it was great haha
Oh yeah, that's even sexier.
Kudos to them. It's almost enough to make me start a "top tier alter thread"
At this point, I have no idea what I’ve designed over the past decade.
It does look very you. Or maybe Lucrecea. Or even Hadya.
Alteration style detective is on the case. 🔍 🕵️♀️
is that why? 😛
What are smooth stones classified as if not misc?
I know they have been a go-to unscripted alter fodder base item for years and am wondering if they would qualify for this end goal.
They dont work in dth
Is there a document somewhere that lists all the in game materials and their physical descriptions in one spot? -- like an excel sheet that's just like. ora | metal | looks like x | this level rarity | etc..
Not in one spot no.
I think this is the closest option
https://gswiki.play.net/Category:Materials
huh. looks like this'll be a bigger project then! 😄
Was going to feed all the material data and item examples along with the ALTER verb rules to a custom GPT and see if I could get it to craft item descriptions based on minimal user inputs. But that will be difficult without all the data in one spot!
I did that visually with the metals
I made visual versions of a whole bunch of metals in the chat gpt dalle extension and then had it craft weapons and armor and jewelry in those metals
#1166797307510018048 message
starts there and scroll down. I did a chunk of em
neat! yeah.. I probably should put that together as an educational for my GPT>MJ pipeline..
those are great!
Dang, those are awesome @lyric atlas - I need to spend more time in the art forums. Also more time reading descriptions, apparently.
yeah it's sort of surreal going from your mental imaging to an actual image that applies the literal descriptions.
I'm finding out that I am absolutely awful at turning a text based object into an accurate image in my mind!
The part I enjoyed the most was the discovery process. I decided rainbow glaes is awesome, vultite is gorgeous, etc. I personally benefit from seeing it visually to appreciate it textually
yeah, same!
could probably code this GPT helper to both follow the rules and generate accurate 15/15/15 and shows -- but also convert those into MJ prompts.
https://gswiki.play.net/Alter_fodder
Is pretty good but not a one stop shop
Nice!
This is in a workable state but not done yet. Y'all that have GPT can give it a whirl and see what you think:

create for me a weapon that might be used by a gnome
GSIV Strict Alteration Assistant:
For a weapon tailored to a gnome's stature and cultural background, we might consider something that is not only proportionate to a gnome's size but also reflects their ingenuity and affinity for intricate designs and mechanics. Here's a description following the guidelines:
Base Description:
Article: a
Adjective: diminutive
Noun: crossbow
Long Description:
a diminutive crossbow with a silver-inlaid oak stock
Show Description:
Crafted from polished oak, the body of this crossbow is compact, catering to the smaller stature of a gnome. Intricate silver inlay traces elegant patterns along its stock, depicting a series of interlocking gears and cogs, emblematic of the gnomish fascination with engineering and invention. The steel bow of the crossbow is sturdy yet slender, designed for precision rather than brute force. A set of small, adjustable lenses are mounted above the firing mechanism, allowing for careful aim and focus on distant targets. The weapon's compact size does not detract from its potency, with every component meticulously calibrated for optimal performance.
This description adheres to the guidelines by keeping the base and long descriptions concise, the show description detailed yet context-neutral, and reflecting the gnome's cultural and physical attributes.

Base Description: a kroderine morningstar
Long Description: with an engraved lion pommel
Show Description: The morningstar, forged from robust kroderine, possesses a natural, silver gleam. The leather-bound haft culminates in a meticulously engraved lion on the pommel, its mane flowing and regal. The weapon's head, equipped with uniformly arranged spikes, is both practical in its construction and striking in its symmetry.
Refined Design 3:
Base Description: an eonake morningstar
Long Description: with a crown-like head
Show Description: Crafted from the resilient eonake, this morningstar is built for longevity. The haft, sheathed in burgundy leather, complements the metallic sheen. The crown-shaped head, with spikes representing jewels, is not only an intricate feature but also a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Refined Design 4:
Base Description: a vaalorn morningstar
Long Description: bound in scripture bands
Show Description: The vaalorn morningstar glimmers subtly, its surface inscribed with fine scripture bands wrapped tightly around the haft. The bands, etched with precision, encircle the weapon, leading up to a head designed for balance and impact, its edges sharp and its form symmetrical.
Refined Design 5:
Base Description: a glaes morningstar
Long Description: with a justice scale motif
Show Description: This glaes morningstar boasts a sleek, reflective surface. The haft is encased in dark, polished leather, leading to a head embellished with a meticulously crafted scale motif. The balanced design of the scales, coupled with the functional form of the flanges, creates a harmonious blend of aesthetics and utility.```
Not sure I love all of them but it's cool that it can sort of get the aesthetic.
bludgeoning people with the crown of Koar~
OK, clockwerke machinations!
A pair of sturdy leather boots, each heel housing a compact mechanism of brass gears and tiny springs, provides a subtle boost with each step. The clever design, almost imperceptible, enhances the wearer's stride, lending an air of swiftness and efficiency to their movements.
An elegant silver hairpin, adorned with a delicate gear motif, hides a complex locking mechanism within. With a gentle twist, the gears align to release a slender blade, transforming the seemingly innocuous accessory into a discreet tool of defense.
A heavy iron cauldron stands on three stout legs, each fitted with a series of gears and pedals. Stirring the contents becomes effortless as the gears transfer the motion from the pedals to a sturdy spoon, ensuring a perfectly mixed potion every time.
A dark oak crossbow, its stock inlaid with intricate brass gears, channels the precision of clockwork into every shot. A small crank, seamlessly integrated into the design, allows for rapid loading and firing, the gears clicking softly as each bolt is set into place.
A set of gleaming kitchen knives, each handle encasing a small gear system, enables the blades to be extended or retracted with a fluid motion. The mechanism ensures the perfect length of blade is always at hand, combining utility with innovative design.
A thick tome, bound in rich leather, features a unique lock made from interlocking gears of various sizes. Only by aligning the gears in the correct sequence can the book be opened, protecting its secrets from all but the most persistent or clever of readers.
A set of lightweight chainmail, each link meticulously crafted to interlock not just with its neighbors but also with a series of minuscule gears, offers protection that adapts to its wearer's movements. The gears distribute the force of blows evenly, lessening their impact while allowing for fluid motion.
A slender flute, carved from polished ebony and inlaid with tiny silver gears, produces a range of notes far beyond that of a traditional instrument. The gears adjust the airflow and modify the tone, allowing for a symphony of sounds from a single source.
A compact writing desk, crafted from mahogany and fitted with brass gears along its sides, can be transformed with a few turns. Shelves and compartments fold out ingeniously, providing a mobile, organized workspace for the traveling scholar or merchant.```
can hook me up with that book anytime 😛
or the writing desk!
unf.
ooof yeah that writing desk would be awesome
Not quite the same but you can turn the gambling cases from Garmac's Goods into writing desks.
oh yea? hmmm..
Would bugle beads be in genre?
was it the branch cincher...
yes
The following GPT item generation interface has now been updated if people would like to play with it:
https://chat.openai.com/g/g-CrQ9ADvk2-gsiv-strict-alteration-assistant
It now knows all of the materials, lore, racial backgrounds, location contexts, forgeable items, skinnable items, nouns, alternative nouns, and other aspects of the game. Sometimes it crests on cringey with the show descriptions and I am working on ironing that out. You can have conversations with it at each generation step to refine elements of the design.
After generating a show description it will ask if you'd like a Midjourney prompt for the item and will produce one for you. This feature still needs some optimizing, but should produce decent albeit it probably rough estimations of the item depiction.
Feedback welcome, DM me if it does something weird or you like it or whatever!
It still lacks a reference database of crafted items from the game. Once I put that together it will have a much better sense of aesthetics. If you have an item with a SHOW that you really love I'd very much like to use it in the training dataset.
TY @frozen sierra and @sour zenith for insights on improvements and resource information. It will continue to improve as I get more game data into its reference files.
neat. Very cool
elven
Culture would be capitalized?
Oh thanks. I didnt think something like that was documented
You're welcome!
There's a saved post on the wiki somewhere also about it with a breakdown, but ALTER is probably best to go with.
I was tickled that 12 years after writing that it was still the go-to post for it when I came back in 2020.
I would kill to get the character displays fixed so that race wasn't capitalized there....and some day, I'll work my way through all the old documentation and lowercase races
leben!
Dwarfs is always uppercase... heck... dey da best case 😉
is this acceptable? i dont know if a tattoo would be given on both palms
A minor suggestion: perhaps realistic rather than life-like. And tweaking the last sentence to be "Placing both hands together would appear to merge the images cleverly to form a massive supernova."
That way, you're not indicating movement
i like that, here is the modification
Good luck, I hope you get selected 🤞
If one wants to get very specific about where a wrist tattoo is, are there set (or allowable) terms for that? Saying "on his distal wrist" seems a bit clinical, but I want to try to figure out how to indicate that something is on the palm side, rather than the back.
so the palm wasnt allowed. here is what i ended up with
a gold-inked star exploding outward in a rainbow of hues.
Inked across the entirety of the wrist is a backdrop of pure void black, the image of a golden star nestled at its exact center. Exploding outwards from the central point of color is an expanding halo of blues, reds, greens, and purples, as though the celestial body is in the middle of bursting into an array of rainbow hues. Tiny pinpricks of ink in varying shades dapple the darkness of the tattoo here and there like distant galaxies.
which is infinitely cooler than what i had
I’m working with some beautiful fabrics right now. Maybe this will inspire someone... Jacquard satin
This will be an overgown
over a cream satin silk chemise
Gorgeous!
I am working with a lot of beautiful materials I do not normally get to play with and will post more as I get them out for inspiration.
Thank you so much! Those are soooo pretty.
if you post a completed photo get ready for an alteration request "i want the overgown that Valyrka made"
I will when its done and on the actress
I am considering purchases this DR and I need a fashion-forward adult to help me. Is there any way to write descriptions for both gloves/gauntlets and finger armor so they don’t look silly being worn together?
Do you have a picture of what you mean?
fingerless gloves are well established
But also, if the finger armor is finger worn you can just tuck it.
I am not sure we do demi-gauntlets
Fingerless is probably the way to go. Otherwise you could have a gauntlet with cloth fingers so finger armor makes sense over it.
not really haha, the use case is basically that I want to have flare gloves and also the finger-armor in be warez and I want people looking at me to not be like "WHAT IS WITH UR HANDS"
fingerless gloves or just cloth fingers sounds like the way to go, thanks!
love the shimmer trinkets,.
There's also the knuckle-cut IACL gloves.
i could also envision handwraps and finger armor
@trail geode Could you do a half-gauntlet type approach with gloves under it and then the finger armor?
Unsure what profession you are and if that would look silly if it's a sorcerer or somethin'.
Myharl looks like a walking pawnshop under his shimmer illusion. 😄 Those were game changing. I've never been more lazy with my inventory sorting.
Yeah, I gotta upgrade mine with certs! thx for the reminder O.O
I'm looking to alter a buckler/targe with this color scheme (indigo + gold/zelnorn). I like the image of the golden zelnorn peeking through indigo paint?
Anyone want to take a crack at a short + show?
the art technique you're describing is called sgraffito, maybe someone not on their phone can get it into a show lol. for a base... how about something along the lines of...
a enameled indigo buckler etched to reveal a many-rayed zelnorn sunrise
that would be a long... hmm dunno if this is possible but maybe
a zelnorn-rayed/sun on indigo/buckler
a zelnorn/gold-rayed sun/buckler
(At the risk of ruining my good name…) a gold-striated/indigo zelnorn/buckler SHOW This fine zelnorn buckler has been coated with a glossy coat of rich indigo enamel. Golden striations surrounding a simple golden disc have been inset seamlessly into the zelnorn’s surface. The indigo backdrop of the buckler provides much needed contrast to complete the simple sun ray imagery that peeks through the enamel coating.

hm.. Moved my armor to robes and not digging the robe look for my sneaky rogue. Thinking of a doublet or jerkin.. it's greater aganjira... anyone have any good ideas for mens clothing?
If they're ASG2, they can be just about any piece of cloth. You could even do a shirt.
The ability to alter robes into pretty much any clothing is one of the best parts of using robes. My robes are a chest-wrap, and I always giggle childishly when the spikes go off from gkicking some bandit.
and it's one of the main reasons why I switched.. so many choices and so many mind blocks.
a white cotton knit shirt with short sleeves
Beautiful jacquard I am working with now
It’s navy, silver and various other blues
That one is better
I wanna touch it. It's good to be able to visualize these things.
I am waitin for lace to get here to finish and a new grommet machine
whatcha makin?!
that's neato!
Can runestaves be metal now or was that just a special thing for starsong?
rhimar ones exist
so its not just starsong
ots too
The rhimar ones actually predate starsong
Is it only flaring or could you make like a mithril runestaff?
What would be the process for that via merchant? Or do you have to do a lesser xmute?
The rules are there are only rules as long as someone says there are rules?
You are in the undefinied land of examples exist but no one has made a ruling
You def can't change a material of an item from wood to a magical metal in a merchant. Lesser xmute is only in theory possible from metal to metal or wood to wood I believe
Like I believe I was told I can't turn my wooden stake into a vultite dagger
but I can turn it into a faewood stake
...but then again...for 1800 premium points metal weapons were turned into wooden weapons en mass
So now we have wooden swords
On the fly brainstorming: a circular, indigo zelnorn,targe-- The elegant presentation of this shield rivals the formidable quality of its functional design. A pellucid layer yields depth to deep indigo hues, suffused with subtle glints of silver throughout the dark surface. As the armament is examined from varying angles, the deeply iridescent finish of the zelnorn bears an undulate transition of tones across the shield, lending a striking resemblance to the sinuous motion of eels slithering in its indigo depths.
I love that
How do I submit more shield nouns for review?

I'd love a formal way to suggest noun expansions in general terms
It is a dark green with gold
What kind of fabric?
looks like something that could be royal robe or something
It is a long surcoat? Upholstry fabric
I've been fascinated by your pics lately on this. The visually bring things to life for me.
they are all in various stages of completion
like the blue flower dress needs the queen to try it on so I can finish the waist cincher and add the grommets
Please share the finished stuff. It looks great
Then I will take a picture
This one is an older garment I am reworking and need to add gold edging to.. someone hot glued sequins to it... I pulled it all off, fixed the seams, hand peels the hot glue off (gr) and now I am adding new gold edging by hand
it has been fun buying fabric and matching patterns
I know I HATe faille
It is so soft and I know I would love to wear it, but it frays and catches on everything
All you ladies wearing your faille out hunting will be coming back with HUGE holes
Anyway finished pictures coming this week
This is what shimmer trinkets are for! So you can LOOK like you're wearing your faille but ACTUALLY be wearing rugged hunting gear that regularly gets covered in gore and icky stuff.
@lament aspen Apologies for pinging you directly but no one seems to be able to give me a definitive answer.
Can the tent storage options e.g. table support a SHOW that can be seen when installed? As in, can you look at it and still see the description when it’s placed in the tent?
Fantastic, thank you. Didn’t want to go to the trouble of adding one.
Nothing special, just wanted something that worked with the theme of the tent
Hello everyone. I have a "firewheel" dagger I would like to alter. I believe it must mention the wood firewheel in its description. Can anyone think of a way to do this other than "with a _ firewheel hilt" or "firewheel-hilted"?
Inlaid with strips of firewheel?
I wonder if they'd let me just have a firewheel themed design. Etched or something
- seed, bark, leaves, flowers, roots or heartwood of the firewheel tree
- hilt, bolster, handle/scales, hilt, or spine could be made of firewheel
- random brainstorms —
inlaid amber encasing a firewheel seed
embraced by senewy firewheel roots
spined with firewheel heartwood
Oh I like the seed idea
I did a pommel shard
an ornate ebony eahnor cresset sword with a glowing firewheel-shard pommel
It feels like something for Carnivale @tacit ermine
hold on
cracks knuckles
a sharp-shouldered white column dress overlaid in gradient geometric ebon lace, a pair of back-bound sleeves fanning inked parchment diamonds on vaalin wire
a pair of wing-like sleeves splaying out in boughs of vaalin piercework
Boom
Tattoo/custom makeup: She has iridescent grass lily flowers inked/brushed across her decolletage in pearl-hued hexagonal patterns.
but I really loved Brie Larson's outfit, I pasted it in another chat earlier and I was like "Spring time in Nalfein"

Someone needs to wear that to the Gala
(I need to solidify the theme for this year's Gala..)
If anyone knows, is it possible to have a long desc on a day/nightbringer? And if so, because the day and night are essentially two different descriptions, can both of them have a long description?
Yes it is, and yes you can
Well, thank you!
They are super customizable, it’s amazing
I'm happy to show you mine if you want an example
Yes please Greatfalls
I just have the daybringer side though
Normal: a gilt and lacquered crosier rising into a bronze sunburst with spear-tipped rays
Activated: a white and indigo-hearted refulgent crosier rising into rays of solar energy
Nice! So you set color 1: white and 2: indigo-hearted?
Customization
Color 1: white Color 2: indigo
Yeah, I am trying to come up with something for both sides, hah
I take it the flames are buiilt in
And I just get the color choice
Yeah, they show up when you do stuff with it.
One more question. If I want to name this weapon, is there a field for that?
i think you can add reads to longs
Alright, thanks for your help!
Yeah, I'm happy to help with a design too if you find you want some
man daybringer customizations let you do pretty nice things
praise the sun
Ok, thanks. Yeah, it's a big job! I need to come up with a basic theme for both sides of the weapon.
You can also alter the inactive states separately from the active, for both sides iirc
Yes. Brain asplode.
With the double shows, I assume that is allowed, and the active and inactive desciptions for each side, and the long desciptions for active and inactive for both sides, it's like altering 4 items, and it has to mesh somehow.
And if only one show is allowed, it needs to encompass both sides somehow.
I shall name the weapon "somehow"
It could be around like an animal insignia or a tree, a gemstone, a type of wood?
Yes. Bergond, my warrior, who uses the daybringer has a nature theme, like his armor is spiked matte black halfling sized full plate inlaid with sapphire oak leaves.
do robes have other nouns?
They can be most any torso clothing I think
I think robes can be most cloth clothing- shirts, kimonos, etc
Can make it a shirt
yeah, i'm pretty sure any clothing item at all is ok for robes
like there is no limit
Mine’s a chest-wrap
This is correct, robes can be basically any garment you’d wear that would cover your chest. Plenty of dresses, wraps, straps, cassocks
light leathers are pretty flexible, too. Learned the other day fulls can be shirts, but not vests. Which makes sense given the coverage.
can long descriptions have commas?
No
just double checking on the 15,15,15 and general look of this for my dearly departed sorcerer friend; a hand-woven, ghostly white, burial shroud.
That's not going to work. The last 15 will always be the noun only, so in this case, shroud.
So, drop the hand-woven and go with ghostly white burial shroud?
That's up to you, I'm just clarifying on the rules for the last 15 in the base, which you can also see in ALTER 2
this was always my weakness, I can never make good alters
You're in the right place, though, as there are plenty in here who are more than willing to help you work through it.

Some may be asleep already

you can have the hand-woven be in the long..
I'm fine with it being gone, I was just so focused on the 15,15,15 and less on the utility of the item and other rules 😄
also, I kinda low-key hate long descriptions
ever since I bludgeoned a poor GM into making a veniom-threaded cloak with five interlocking circles emblazoned on the back.
My good friend Owly did make a nice alteration tool that can help you work out your 15/15/15:
It will yell at you in angry red text for a lot of common mistakes - such as putting multiple words in the 3rd field.
that's a handy tool, I'll have to tip my hat to Owly if I ever see them
the long can be throught the base description as well..
you could add a material to replace the hand-woven. such as: a ghostly white, linen burial, shroud
and then the long could be: a ghostly white burial shroud hand woven of linen
15/15/15 could be "a ghostly white, burial, shroud" and the long could be "a hand-woven ghostly white burial shroud" with other wharever in there
that too!
would that be possible via a sadie scroll?
should be?
it's currently a robe
i think robes can be any fabric, so shroud.. should work?
is it armor robes? yes, i think you could do that via scroll
it's a dramatic drapery robe
those are cloak worn. i've never personally made a cloak-worn "shroud" so it'd be up to the GM whether that noun is allowable.
I think it'd be up to the sadie guidelines, they tend to be more strict than a freeform merchant iirc
they're the same guidelines, but Sadie can't accept rare materials, so it's a little more limiting.
yeah, all the better to get them done quicker
sadly I have leather armor, so I doubt they will let me exchange them
yeah, leather armor also has set nouns.
and a leather shroud sounds so last year
This shroud has everything! Pockets, a snazzy script, and MTV's Dan Cortez!
Also looking for a ceremonial or ritual alter for a rune staff appropriate noun. Something more appropriate than a bear claw mashed on top of a stick that I have at the moment.
Runestaves approved nouns: asaya, crook , crosier, pastoral staff, rune staff, runestaff, scepter, staff, staff-of-Lumnis, walking stick.
What are the details of the staff? Material, distinguishing features in addition to being crowned with a bear claw?
Generally speaking.. if you're planning to have a long description altered onto an item, the way the 15/15/15 is set up only matters in very small ways.
The middle 15 (the "adjective") plus the last 15 (the "noun") will both show up when you use certain verbs, such as cover to lay your hand on "your 15/15".
The first 15 (the "article") will never really show up at all for any verbs, but it will be visible if you have the item inside of a container (including your locker) with SET sorted view off.
Otherwise, other verbs that currently show the full 15/15/15 on the item, such as TAP, will show the long description when altered. And the long description might be set up slightly differently than how its 15/15/15 is precisely worded.
For example, let's say I have an item that right now is "a really ugly, brown leather, hat".
If I use COVER MY HAT, it yields, "XXX places his hand on his brown leather hat." If I TAP MY HAT, it yields, "XXX taps a really ugly brown leather hat."
Now, let's pretend I get my hat altered and it is now "a truly fabulous mud brown leather hat with an upturned brim". That is the item's long description. You'll notice that "a truly fabulous, mud brown leather, hat" doesn't work for a 15/15/15, because "a truly fabulous" is 16 characetrs and "mud brown leather" is 17 characters. Its actual 15/15/15 might be "a fabulous, brown leather, hat". Or it might be "a fabulous, mud brown, hat". Both work.
If I COVER MY HAT, I will end up with, "XXX places his hand on his brown leather hat." (Or, "XXX places his hand on his mud brown hat.") That depends entirely on the adjective 15.
If I TAP MY HAT, I will end up with, "XXX taps a truly fabulous mud brown leather hat with an upturned brim." I'll never see "XXX taps a fabulous brown leather hat" or similar variants.
So the tl;dr is if you want a long description, don't worry too much about the 15/15/15 outside of the second and third 15 (adjective+noun).
The difference between base description and long description took me way too long to figure out. Like, years. Even to this day I still design long description alter ideas predicated on the 15/15/15 rule, with the "long" being appended to that. It feels like that at one time was enforced, but it opens up a lot of flexibility in design.
same, just recently learned different >.>
at the moment it is a burled fireleaf staff embedded with a splintered bear claw. Looking for something along the lines of an Egyptian scepter, the wood material and burled adjective is fine, but just looking for inspiration. The character is designed around being undead, if that helps.
you can omit the material too if it doesnt fit in RP but mechanically you want it. An Asaya IS egyptian, tho I think they were often used for sparring and whacking things? dunno. would need to re-read about those.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahtib
But you could use it for the theme?!
Just some random brainstorming...
a graven pallid [material] asaya helically etched with profane ciphers/cryptographs ```
that would fit with the sigil script on it
a graven pallid fireleaf asaya helically etched with sullen runes
or would sullen imply that they are actively glowing which I think you can't do?
I wouldn't read it that way, sullen to me reads as "dark" or "gloomy", but I've often had to work around some archaic language that merchants felt was too ambiguous. I questioned profane a bit when I added it to the brainstorm concept, but if I wanted the design I would try with either.
they glow under protest. 🙂
Side note, though: You can't do glowing in an alter with a Sadie scroll (unless the material of the item is already glowing or naturally glows), but you can do glowing items via GALD merchant alterations by providing "glowing dye additive" or fodder like the "akutet dye".
Weirdly, lore doesn't clarify what the color/tone of fireleaf wood is. The bark is dark grey/green, and the leaves are fiery in the autumn (where it gets its name), in the spring the leaves are dark green. Fireleaf itself doesn't glow, or smolder naturally.
huh, interesting. I figured given it's fire-lightning status that the heartwood would be all embery. I stand corrected!
Oh, the fire/lightning is firewheel not fireleaf.
You can make things glow with dye additives
the script has glowing sigils built into it
Oh those are their own thing
so I'm fine if the description doesn't referenc the glow
they ignite when you hold it
Oooh. That's the one I was thinking of. duh.
that's what he's currently wearing, pending the sadie scroll to see if I can get the robe altered. Hopefully that might inform the rest of his fit
might have to do something to tone down the gloves
Could do like a dark carmine or vermillion, maybe. Something will probably call to you as you put the outfit together.
GALD merchants can work on tats now, right? Is that fairly common?
It would usually be a tattoo merchant that can work on existing tattoos. We typically don't do it in normal GALD sessions because tattoo work tends to take longer. But before, we could not work on existing tattoos at all, now we can modify them.
Not tattoos at GALD, though recently they did make it where tattoo mechants can alter an existing tattoo. However, you can use flypaper tattoo (before it is applied) though, the pricing at GALD is a bit different. I think it's 100k for the tattoo part - which can have a long and a show (one GALD service), and then you can do two of the customized tattoo verbs in subsequent visits for 50k silver. I'd have to double check, but I think you can get a fully custom flypaper tat with 4 GALD services at 250k silver (which is a nice option if you can't make it to actual tattoo merchants to get work done).
Keep in mind not all GALD merchants will work on flypaper tattoos because they are time-consuming and difficult. So don't be surprised if someone denies the request. Myharl and I are experts now though after last time.
When using a scroll if you write new on accident instead of Reply does that reset the scroll and put it back into the cue?
@ Bjarbie Casil I like to find the most difficult way to learn things, and then double down. It's a vibe. 😆
Costumes almost done..
Ooc might be a better place but maybe these will give folks ideas
those look awesome, nice work.
Putting the rest in off topic thanks!
beautiful!!
Princessy!
Grammer check: the weapon is counter weighted (with/by) a large rock (on/inset in) pommel or/the pommel?
I would say counterweighted with a large rock inset in the pommel
you could do on the pommel
a lance atm
I'm stripping out the specific nouns to make sure I have a good sentence structure then going back for the workup of materials
I have some flashbacks to old sadie scrolls but its been so long (7 years?) since I did one of these
I am glad this channel is here
Hmm, I am uncertain that you would counterweight a lance, given it's calvary nature/pikeman usage in GS. Nor would they have pommels per se. You could balance it via adding weight to the haft, or changing the haft to a more dense/durable material. This is more me free associating for my edification than saying you could or couldn't do what you are intending.
yeah depends on the lance. Some are like spears and just have a long shaft. Some have a vambrace flanged out above the grip for protection, and depending on its use had a weighted grip or pommel to balance it so you could keep it straight while you were riding...don't want the weight of the long shaft to tip it down.
of course standing on the ground swinging it already makes it a silly weapon in many ways
and the fact that we won't let it blur with halberds and glaives is a continual disappointment to me...but thats life.
I'm also looking for a polished wooden dagger I can get the spore script on so ..I'm always looking at things sideways I suppose
nonetheless...I think you can have sonething set in the base of the shaft...and a big rock, a diamond (since I can't have a DOOMSTONE)...etc...must be it
Tikba likes raining on my GS dreams for spiffyness (I joke).
I totally get the doomstone angle...but I do want there to be some use for them because they are just so cool
any use really
just a use
but I suspect no one will let me feed them to roltons and let them lose in town
you can take them into the DR arena and drop them for the next contestant
(do not do this)
rofl
would it be okay at the EG arena? more thematic? 😛
oh found this old alter I did in my locker
an ancient krolvin warlance
The broadleaf blade is forged from scorched and pitted mithril and the back edge is rowed with barbed hooks, while its front edge is wavy and razor sharp. The haft is a thick rod of highly polished villswood bound in bronze bands that are oxidized with age. A broken skull sigil is stamped into the crossbar connecting the shaft to the blade.
I'm not good with fancy patterns or cloth but I do enjoy a mean looking weapon.
Tikba said to do this and I didn’t see anything else she said 😇
One of the things I find most difficult about writing shows for clothing is finding ways to convey the texture of fabrics creatively. Like, the texture of structured wyrsilk is going to be very different than billowing shadowsilk, and that can have a visual impact. There are tactile variances in every material, but fabrics are just all over the board. Some examples: integrating interfacing for formalwear, laminates and waxed fabrics, resins as stiffeners, etc. I guess this is more of a musing than a request for help, but I'm in the process of designing a formal outfit, and noticed a tendency to fall into repetitive generalized terms. Anyone else struggle with this? What seemed to work best for you in the end?
Not writing shows.
What sort of repetitive terms are you finding yourself using?
More along the lines of just "brushing" against texture in verbiage with adjectives like "soft, subtle, pliable, (insert thesaurus)". When being more descriptive, I was leaning heavy into a lot of simile-derivatives that felt like they worked well, until repetitive use felt gimmicky. It may just be the nature of visual-centric language; a lot of ways to describe how something looks with less focus on the tactile. Scents are often laden with metaphor as well, so I may just go ahead and lean into it. I was just curious if anyone had a method of writing tactile sensations that might make it flow better, and in a way that worked well with limited character count. I'm probably being too picky.
*I love the way language falls into onomatopoeic tendency for the auditory... maybe I can play around with words that "feel" like the textures I'm going for. *
not sure if this helps but i think sometimes if you're putting together an entire outfit, considering how pieces layer can give the outfit a holistic textural feel as well (as can the sound of the words that you mentioned) without having to specifically mention a texture in every piece. so if i have a shirt that i want to look unforgiving or starched i might alter it to have some sort of standing collar, or maybe creases down the sleeves, then put an obviously structured corset or a vest in a heavy fabric like jacquard, brocade, or velvet over it.
And I think when you talk about being formal, there's more things that go in there than just texture. There's the cut the adornment the lining the tailoring the fabric choice itself. Things like meticulous, careful, intricate, elaborate etc
Sumptimes issa bedder to "hint" at stuff den to "spellit out"! Like,,, I gots a pet pigeon...anna I gots some wooden pauldrons wit "tiny scratch marks" onnem... dey (up der) was too scared to put "bird guano" or "poop" or any udder word fer sameonna dem pauldrons but if'n ye see me inneract wit "Goldie" da pigeon der's no dout wot caused da scratch marks anna where she perfers to perch.
Subtle... issa cool.
Well said.
I had a blast researching material and making costumes for my musical. This is the tunic I was reworking completed.
I put a bunch of my creations over in off topic
They all look fantastic.
With a sadie scroll if I want to add a gem to an item...will Sadie do that as part of the show if I have one on me? Will Sadie care if I have one on me? Will sadie not do that so I need to find a regular merchant?
Can't do anything that requires fodder with Sadie
okay GTK think I'll wait then
But depending on the gem you're interested in, it may not be required
black deathstone...rated "infrequent" on rarity
I think that would actually be fine
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I believe you only need to provide when you start reaching rare
yeah looking at the alter it says very rare or extremely rare and this isn't...so guess I can try it
You would get this line if you need to supply it: You peer intently at the blue diamond as you turn it in your fingers, meticulously inspecting for flaws. You estimate that the blue diamond is a very rare gemstone of fair quality and worth approximately 7,200 silvers. ** It would need to be supplied to be used in an alteration.**
deathstones are a-ok
You peer intently at the black deathstone as you turn it in your fingers, meticulously inspecting for flaws. You estimate that the black deathstone is a common gemstone of average quality and worth approximately 100 silvers.
I thought I updated the rarity on the wiki
I didn't update each gem page though, just the main gem page
stupid information
Ma'am... that's what we in the wiki-biz call a "long-term project". Rabbit holes and all that. It'll be fine for now.
I'll just go BLANK the information, then it can't be wrong
Now you're just being mean. 😅
With a Sadie scroll I can do a short and a show description. I’d love to add a read description as well at some point in that something that is usually done as a second alter at some point that changes the show (adds in something is written on) and then what it says when read? Don’t know if I want to blow even more PP on it so a later merchant able to brand or write it etch it later or can it be problematic?
Additional question…if I’m using a Sadie scroll should I avoid doing any services while it is in process or do services have no risk of being lost or screwing up the request (alter not flare or weighting).
Any services done after you pick up a scroll will be reverted
Ask for a read, it's generally considered part of a standard alteration and not a separate service or customization
Thank you I will freeze all service work during the alter request. Very very Gtk.
Follow up. A long description is up to 511 characters I’m assuming that would include the link to the read?
It depends
Err on the side of 510, not 511.
If you want like "elegant words are written along the blade" then yes. If you don't and just want to read it, that's fine
Aside from spamming about asking players is there some place where we have noted or registered item names? Like do we have 27 Koar’s Light or Lotminstrs’s Hammers or what not running around?
No
But at least that is easy to understand 😬
There really isn't a reason to keep a list like that. Weapon naming tends to be very personal to people who WANT to name their weapons. In some cases, GMs will put out named weapons with special properties (ex. Bergreham(sp?) originals) that are "known" to the populace, but aside from that, it's not really a huge push.
Just random curiosity on my part. I look at a rock and think…how did it get here? Where has it come from? Has anyone ever used it to brain someone else? 😬
Sirina once joked that named weapons hit harder and I quote that a lot, but it's not accurate
Not factually accurate
It's accurate in our hearts
I feel the same way about my attuned gear. It has to be better cuz I’m stuck with it right?
Or is that my wife? (Ducks)
Admittedly some jokes don’t age well. I’ll give that one to the tavern jester.
.
I want a Jibby Jabber
I like the basket on the stibby stabborino
Tickle Stick has my name all over it.
what would damascas steel be in Elanthia?
Damascened - this term is allowed and recommended in lieu of Damascus. So it would be damascened steel
oh thank you!
Might anyone be able to come up with a sensible descriptor and call for an Animalistic Spirit - Firefly?
blinking, winking, glowing, lucent, scintillating, glimmering.
flitter and flutter.
Coruscating, twinkling, glinting, illuminating
I’m working on a description for some gleeman gloves but it’s getting way too wordy. I envision them as being bright (garish) multi- colored (different term?) diamond patterned…. That could be a show but seems like there should a decent short/ base description. Feel like I’ve already used many of those terms elsewhere. Any thoughts on a short description that would encompass what I’m shooting for here?
the chemical-enzymatic reaction of their light is called luminescence, so luminescent or luminescing may also fit?
I like the connotations of "garish" as opposed to "bright". For multicolored you could describe the pattern (checkered?). I think the term "motley" could work, as thst is the traditional jester garb pattern/color
multi-color: harlequin (in varied colors; can also describe a diamond pattern), variegated (irregular patches of color), parti-color (a predominant color broken by smaller patches of different colors).
pattern: argyle (diamond plaid), rhombic (which I think works well with garish), rosepath (diamonds in diamonds)
to give you an idea of what I'm looking like now...and where the alter will fit...its the current non-conforming gloves
You are holding a twisted harlequin runestaff in your right hand.
You are wearing a lustrous knitted lute-patterned rainbow-flecked paeline tote, a parti-color belled liripipe hood, a flowing brightly-hued cloak edged with colorful bells, a white diamond phoenix pin, a dark red vaalorn lute symbol accented with gold, a red-headed bard pin, a pair of antique silver-framed spectacles with blue-tinted lenses, a multicolored myklian scale-covered vest, a lute-shaped Cholen pin, a silver gleeman's lute tabard, a blue feather-shaped charm, a kaleidoscopic gewgaw-adorned harness, a garish multi-colored backpack adorned with silver bells and embroidered with dancing jesters, a motley polychromatic gambeson secured with silver jester-face buckles, a white cotton shirt, a hummingbird saewehna-inset armband, a simple blued steel wristchain, a whiskey-hued wrist sheath with tiny gold buckles, a pair of brown canvas gloves with grass-stained palms, an enruned gold ring, a varicolored bejeweled girdle, a black leather belt pouch with dancing bears tooled on the flap, a bejeweled bauble kit, a huge mustard jar, a pair of colorful patchwork canvas trousers, and a pair of trollhide buskins studded with rainbow quartz pieces.
the shirt and the gloves are going to go or change...so working on the gloves for an alter first
and then a color change on my pouch
@strong meteor ‘s not eating! They’re spending all their per diem on shirts at Dan Flashes!
it does seem that way sometimes
...I like the mustard jar.
you should see the show on that and my keg...and my runestaff
rough sketch the hat/staff is messed up and the keg and jar are missing
but you can see where it's heading...gotta jazz up my hands first though
a garish nightmare...
of garishness 😄
I...am not going to say what first came to mind.
Okay fine. I was about to ask if a clown college expelled a dwarf for going too far.
for drunk and disorderly
my jar - Half full, this massive iron-lidded jar is hung from a belt by means of a grimy yellow-brown rope. The sides and bottom of the jar are encrusted with pungent brown smears of mustard. It looks rather sticky. Glued to the front of the jar is a simple label that reads, "Dwarven Brown Mustard, guaranteed fresh. By the looks of it, the delicous mustard is in no immediate danger of expiration.
...needs a closing quotation mark but that is awesome
Brainstorming:
some garishly goffered gloves```
my pewter-banded dwarven whiskey keg (ever full of whiskey) The keg of aged dwarven whiskey is made of charred dark oak. Soot stains cover the barrel's staves. A large distillery crest is stamped on the side depicting a tankard wielding dwarf beating a massive troll king to the ground. Dwarven markings under the image read: Ancient Troll-Slayer Single Malt Reserve, Product of Kazunel.
foffered?
goffered? gonna look that up
oh frilly
thats nice
a little ruff around the cuffs
my Twisted Harlequin Runestaff: This runestaff is twisted and carved from illthorn into the likeness of a harlequin with painted motley garb. The harlequin's head is topped with a tri-colored trickster cap decorated with sparkling rainbow ribbons and shiny brass bells. The jester's form is sinuously elongated and his mocking face appears to wink and smirk as light plays across its garishly painted surface.
so yeah ...goffered gonna work that in
the gloves are wand eater gloves so I wanna keep em...could probably find an already garish glove set but...then they wouldn't eat wands
If your goal is to represent the image above, I might suggest trimming down the length of the overall outfit. I think the imagery is amazing but if I see that much on a character in game I'm probably not going to take the time to look it over because it's a lot and it's hiding some great pieces.
yeah its hard to read...I'd almost rather have it for myself with some kinda cloaking then just show off bits and pieces...not sure if there is a suitable cholen pendant or something that will do that...have to reseaerch it
but sometimes I also like a bit of eyeball vomit 😄
Fair! You gotta play for you, first and foremost
I do need something that lets me cloak it a bit when needed.
Shimmer trinkets and the TUCK verb come in handy for tidying up an outfit.
but back so recently just focusing on the minor alters first.
Enhancive hiders as well
unless someone has some kinda good clown/jester illusion item they can point me toward
relearning all the ways I can mask, disguize, and change things...many new options (or old ones I've forgotten)
goffered purple and green diamond pattered gloves....
The patterns are SO COMPLICATED
a good Harlequin aims to cause direct eye damage whenevever possible 😄
I had a few harlequin themed items made about 20+ years ago
My favorite was ‘a toy-soldier capped scepter made of broken children’s toys’
this explains a lot about Jaysehn's childhood
oh...thats nothing. This one too...
>look my fig
Hauntingly lifelike in its appearance, the child kneels, pitifully weeping away its sorrows. Still dressed in its bed-clothes, its emaciated arms grasp feebly at the remnants of a torn stuffed bear.```
They were a matching set
...now I want to make Elanthian versions of the broken green plastic army men from Toy Story.
only if they have the parachutes
Thanks! The reason I was struggling with this is the flare messaging template: "Wings fluttering and legs curled, a [descriptor] ethereal firefly glides unsteadily downward with an angry [call] as (default: a [group] of wispy [color] fireflies roil forth in an angry torrent)!" and I am drawing a blank on what sort of sound an angry firefly could possibly make, especially as the template already contains "fluttering".
Are they rustling your jimmies?
Alterations are one of the coolest things to me in GS. Also the most intimidating. So I’m just trying to glean some info right now because I’m not at my computer. I want to alter a sigil staff with premium points. One of the things I want to alter is the color of the runestaff. It is (if I remember right) “A turned white modwir runestaff” so if I wanted it blue or some variation of blue do I need to supply something that is the color I want? Also the color of the flare, I would like to change it as well. The same question applies. Do I need to supply something for the new color?
as long as the material is able to be dyed (and modwir is), you are able to alter the color without supplying anything. same for the effect color.
Ok that’s good to know. Now I just need to think on the colors a bit
I want something blue but I’m not sure what exactly yet.
Oh it’s monir not modwir.
it doesn't require a dye unless it's a limited color. I think there was one released last year and sold at EG.
most, if not all, of the material pages on the wiki list whether or not it will take a dye, too.
You know, I don't know what monir is either. I don't see it often enough for the curiosity to have ever been prompted. It's a safe bet that it's intended to be common as it's available for a lot of home furnishings and a few OTS musical instruments in town shops (and in the treasure system as boxes and statues/figures as well).... but I too, have no idea about the lore behind it. Now I'm curious.
It was definitely ots. I’m assuming there’s nothing too special about it.
There we go! Oddly enough a wiki search of monir has that show up as the 87th result.
I didn’t look that far 😆
Stopped at 86, eh?
Monir is a lovely deciduous tree.
I hadn't gotten that far in my search. If I were more awake I would have probably started on the materials page, which would have gotten me there faster.
https://gswiki.play.net/Monir has a redirect now.
Yep, last place I looked 😆
I’m guessing it’s able to be dyed. It was the base price ots so not a special material
Yep, usually there will be something there on the wiki that denotes said material cannot be dyed.
So it is “ringed by polished brass” that part of the description has to stay as is?
That’s part of the long description, so you are able to change it. You might find it helpful to peek at the alter verb before you get your scroll. There’s some good basic info on the types of descriptors and what you can change, character counts, etc https://gswiki.play.net/Alter#ALTER_3:_Long_Descriptions
Analyze should give you a good idea of the alterable fields (colors, runes) other than that looks like it should follow general alteration rules. Granted I’ve never played with a sigil staff, but from a glance at the wiki on that item- Missoni’s pointed you towards the right article
Sigil does follow the usual rules, and has a few customizable fields
A turned white monir runestaff ringed by polished brass
I guess I need to get in the game and give it a look.
How do you write to the scroll? And what do you write?
I’m sure there’s an example somewhere but I swear I’ve read everything several times and I’m not seeing it
yeah put the item in left hand, scroll in right hand....
then just type
Write Base: al;asjkdfl;askdf;ladfladfjakldsf show: asdfjalsdfkaslkdfasdf
or whatever it is you're doing
when you hit enter at the end it registers it
then if you read the scroll it says "You have just written this - It can take up to TWO WEEKS blah blah
Ok so writing them separately makes sense. Perfect thank you for the example.
I just went through it last week (now going through the TWO WEEKS wait)
and the scroll doesn't tell you Its submitted...just that you just wrote that
so keep the scroll in a backpack and then obsessively check it every day 😄
its like watching paint dry
Oh I will be.
You can use the weapon like normal though right? Just don’t do anything to it. Player services etc
I’m assuming it’s probably a bad idea to mark or register the scroll?
Yes just don't alter it in any way
and I'd not mess with the scroll no idea though never tried
but you can hit stuff with your sword
It’s a runestaff so no hitting, just deflecting 😆
Just don’t want to accidentally sell the scroll 😆
It says take it to a shop
is there a list of known unique nouns for pin worn items?
I want to have a pin that doesn't clash with other pins and items I have. Don't much care what it is, as long as the noun is unique
like there are knots, but I already have a knot
just wondering what else is possible
i think it can be anything within reason. i have a pinworn "lily" and a pinworn "nightshade" for example. i could see button, brooch, charm...
I have brooch, pin, stickpin, buckle, sash(its a pinworn sash),symbol. You can also do what I did and just start dyeing them all
an ashen stickpin (functional)
a steel blue brooch (functional)
a steel blue stickpin (functional)```
you could also do shapes. i have a pyramid. cameo would probably be fine...
cool I'll try some of those
I have a bezoar!
Yeah it's pretty flexibile. I've got a cage, for example.
on the chance this is to help organize enhancives, I cannot speak more highly of the dye idea
It was a brilliant suggestion when it was made to me
If I was a useful human, I would have organized them by color
oh its too late. I dyed everything I could of my enhancives.
But,I also use in game labels to tag everything, so I'm at least marginally organized
I just realized that I did a scroll today for an alteration. I didn’t see anything about using my premium points? Was I supposed to say that on the scroll or is it assumed?
Assumed. You get quoted when they respond then deducted when you accept
Oh ok
I have a wart.,. I’ve also made a boil. Other weird nouns I’ve used- shard, sliver, effigy, tooth, bladder (although that one is a pouch)
I have a werewolf, a dragon, and a broomstick. Just has to be obvious that it's smaller than the real thing. For example, my broomstick is a toy broomstick.
interesting, I'll give it a shot, the last time I tried a random item I was told it had to be an "item noun" pin, rather than item noun itself
an ebon-flecked sunset garnet werewolf (nonfunctional)```
charm and clasp
The only times I’ve hit that, the analyze specifically mentioned the noun cannot change.
I've run into this recently as well. For the first time ever. It's not typically the case though, and probably someone's personal preference for work they do.
How does everyone come up with their alterations? I have an idea for a theme and I even have a picture in my head but when it comes to putting it into words I get stuck.
Lots of editing and re-editing. What kind of story am I trying to tell with this item? (I was an English major/writing minor in my college days, so writing is a little more second nature to me)
There are a lot of folks here who are happy to assist with ideas and wording and the like.
on Shows...do you tend to have the show look like this "the shirt is made with silk and has blood spots" or do you show the shirt and see "blood spots are visible on the red silk material" what I mean is on a show do you tend to say what it is first or just go right into details?
I actually try and avoid that, tbh.
avoid which
"The [noun] is ...."
makes sense
I also try and avoid passive voice.
Did policy change when it comes to use of 'additives' such as a glowing dye additive?
I was given ALTER 32 as a reference. Nowhere does it say you cannot use a dye additive to get the word.
Please confirm I can give you a glowing dye additive, and you will add the word glowing during an alteration.
Im not staff, but ive used glowing dye twice in the past year and had the word ‘glowing’ put into the alteration
@tulip wing What about you?
Was your dye glowing? Or did you had them the additive only?
There's a nuance here that is being ignored.
Oh….i dont know now. Glowing dye additive i think
Generally colors are not "magical" in nature, and thus do not "glow" of their own accord or cause an item to "shimmer" at all times (see ALTER 30). Alchemy dyes, however, allow for some adjectives, such as "glowing" and "shimmering," to be added to some of your items, even mundane ones. Additionally, they may at times allow you to use rare/restricted pigments that are not always available. Depending on the size of the item, you may need to provide multiple doses of the dye. Not all merchants will work with alchemic dyes based on IC reasons, and some items may have script or alteration restrictions that will disallow the dye from being applied. See Alchemy Dyes on the GS Wiki for more information.
Yeah. I gave over one of those. ‘A vial of glowing dye additive’
Based on alter 32, it should have been a dye.
There are glowing dye and glowing dye additives?
Til
I just bought the ones on playershops
i guess you have to pour the additive in the color you want to use it? i didn't know that either
Honestly, you don't have to even have the color match. It just has to be in a dye.
Ill definitely note that for the future
I'm just going by the wording in alter 32
I never hand over the additive, but it's super easy to make glowing dye. Just run by the cobblers shop (there's one in the landing), buy a dye, run to the dyers tent, ORDER BOTTLE with the dye in your right hand, then put the additive in the dye and it will make it a "glowing X dye". There you go! It used to be pretty strict about what you could do "glowing" with and the additives were never accepted by themselves, so I just got in the habit of making the dye I wanted and having it on hand.
I had to make some for a GM referral to fix an item the other night (an alter book messed up adding the glowing dye), and I joked about taking 5 minutes to make a new one. It took me 2 and a half minutes.
🙂 Thank you.
Thanks for the info, it wasn't on the wiki, and the alterer telling me to make the dye ... whispers, "I personally do not know how to use the alchemy system."
For the record, I have always handed over JUST/ONLY the additive. But if we have to jump through another hoop, so be it.
Oh! I thought I had added that to the wiki awhile back... I meant to. Going to go do that now.
Oh, it's on the wiki (link below), I was in there updating some color info the other day is what I was remembering. @modest matrix let me know what page you were looking for the info on and I'll make a note there as well to be sure folks can find the info.
https://gswiki.play.net/Dyer's_tent
Alter 32 links to here: https://gswiki.play.net/Alchemy_dyes
Notation now exists on the
Dyer's Tent Page: https://gswiki.play.net/Dyer's_tent
The Dye Additive Page: https://gswiki.play.net/Dye_additive
The Alchemy Dyes Page: https://gswiki.play.net/Alchemy_dyes
That should have everyone covered no mater what angle they take to find the info.
Awesome! It still exists! I need help coming up with an alter for my wizard's staff. I've never altered a non-edged weapon before.
What is it, what theme, materials would you like to use?
8x, 10x acuity, greater surita, S6, T1, Sigil staff.
Its for my fire themed wizard. @tulip wing
Brainstorming —
***************/***************/***************
a flame-seared darkened surita staff laced with glowing crimson venules
a fiery-veined charred surita staff crowned with a glowing blazestar
a gnarled ebon surita staff limed with fiery crimson veins
a charred ebon surita staff laced with glowing fiery striations
a blackened staff of ebon surita engulphed in glowing fiery crimson veins
I'll keep working on ideas and edit this. I'm tabbing back and forth between this and sailing.
Surita has some Alteration limitations
Storm: grey wood grain striated with intense turquoise augmented by varying shades of light blue
Aura: grey wood grain striated with niveous veins accented by pink, lilac, and saffron hues
Dusk: ebon wood grain striated with lavender veins accented by rose and carnelian hues
Dawn: ebon wood grain striated with crimson veins accented by goldenrod and pumpkin hues
Ocean: white wood grain striated by moss agate and indigo hues
Summit: white wood grain striated by plum and chocolate brown hues
The above hue descriptions can be used when referencing the "color" of the wood since its magical properties prohibit dyeing. For instance, a runestaff could be: a slender dawn surita runestaff. Hue variants do not need to be referenced in the item's description.
A charred ebon crimson-veined staff laced with glowing fiery striations?
I don't know much about surita, what kind of staff is yours of those? Dawn, I'm guessing if ebon works?
Yeah
I'd like to work in the crimson veins if possible
A charred ebon crimson veined staff adorned with glowing fire sigils?
Not sure if fire sigils work as fire runes apparently does >_>
Does it need to say surita?!
One winged angel, send help XD
Any of those ^ ideas help?
a blackened staff of ebon surita engulphed in glowing fiery crimson veins
Yes
@tulip wing
Now I need a show XD
(grin) Are you at the merchant? Or can I write something up in a few minutes?
You got a few minutes
Seared dark by the sinuous kiss of flame, the grain of this ebon surita staff bears riotous valleys of variegated striations, each suffused with veins of fiery crimson agita. The natural rivers of carmine crystal are accentuated by a lucent glow from within.
I have an alteration question. I'm not arguing that this was incorrect or not the way it should be. I just want to better understand how to get the look I want appropriately.
I was trying to alter a knife into `a slender spear-pointed throwing knife ..."
Both spear-pointed and throwing were said to be impossible to add. How would I describe the look of a throwing knife if I didn't use these terms? I can't quite seem to find the words to do so. Spear-pointed is a blade style while throwing knife indicates the shape of the entire knife. Thoughts? Would love to see some of your knife examples!
Not sure if there are any word helps here but the wiki does list all the allowable dagger names. https://gswiki.play.net/Dagger
Throwing dagger and spear may be an issue because they cross over to different weapon type descriptions or is it a mechanical throwing dagger?
Never threw anything so not sure about that stuff
so for throwing knives, it's really just a case of there not being anything that uniquely qualifies a throwing knife, partially because you can hurl/throw a wide variety of things. So on that side, you need/want to come up with something that is obviously a throwing knife from how it looks, rather than from how it's described.
Right, that's what I gathered from the response. I'm just wondering how you would describe one.
as for spear-pointed, that one is probably one that should go under review for discussion and could just be one that the merchant didn't know, as not everybody is a knife expert, but that sounds like it's no different than other blade styles.
I did explain that it was a blade shape but was still denied. But that would be helpful.
If you have an image and can find the official dagger style off the list like a scramasax or something that might help too
I think the shape of a throwing knife is indicated in the name throwing knife. It's like, any knife can also be a knife to take hunting, but 'hunting knife' describes a specific shape/style of a knife
If you Google a throwing knife, there's a specific style that comes up.
Yeah, the google top results coming up is... rough. It does indicate the most common appearance of a term now. But as far as throwing knife, a big chunk of it is the fact that you can throw lots of things that don't look like that. you can throw a kukri etc. And just fair game, throwing knife etc. is a much older discussion
Sure, understood.
let me try a couple... "a ring-pomelled narrow knife" could work for one of the common types. And you'd probably want to accentuate the straightness, if you're going for that style of throwing knife
and even searching throwing knives, I'm getting a mix of handleless throwing knives and combat throwing knives (with very different pommel styles)
There are a couple of ways you can do this. One would be by describing it in a "show" for the item with verbiage like (just as an example), "The blackened steel dagger bears no discernable hilt where its thin blade flows seamlessly into a skeletonized tang. The design appears to intentionally shift the center of balance toward the blade while maintaining a sleek aerodynamic profile."
that was where my ring-pommeled came in. Balanced could also help out
This is also known as a kunai, though that's apparently a brawling weapon.
Yeah the short description could focus on a thin flat blade and the show could elaborate it well. I went through all the listed dagger styles (googled images each word) till I found one with the shape I liked from the wiki list then build around that on the show
Merchants will typically do a long OR a short+show right?
This has been my process as well.
But so many of those knife nouns are just... yuck.
Are we able to reference this chat if I wanted to ask for spear-pointed again? It would work well for me in a short description.
Yeah, for that design in the base/long description, I would absolutely go with ring-pommeled, as Apraxis suggested.
GALD merchants will either add a "long" or a "show", however an item may have both. So you could do a long description one time, and then alter it again to get a show description.
Did you try this through a Sadie scroll or a live merchant. Individual merchants can get pretty subjective…Sadie can have different challenges but I think things get QC’d a bit more there? That’s my assumption?
For there to be a review is it better to get a Sadie scroll…just try again at another merchant or wait to hear back here for guidance?
I just had a no-policy-violation sadie scroll I bought through someone that took 35 days. No back-and-forth was needed. 👀
So be wary. 😄
I have one in process now so will also report how it goes whenever I hear back.
So there isn't really an active process when things get reviewed to inform all the people who asked. I went ahead and poked it into the discussion pipeline, but nothing in gemstone is zippy, as you can imagine, so it could be a while to get an outcome, and it would more be "try again in a few months" etc. The advice I'll give is to work to come up with another design you like and go with that for now, and if you get another dagger in the future you like, see how things stand then
the spear-point thing i'm surprised at. I have a spear-point crowbill
It was explained that if I want a specific blade shape, I had to choose the appropriate knife noun.
I didn't fight it, just found it odd.
I'm always sweating when my idea is declined since I'm holding up the line more now. 😄
sephwir-hafted crowbill with a spear-point rhimar blade🤷♂️
maybe if you did something like that with the spear-point descriptor in the long
Would it be possible to request the the noun "shroud" work with the concealable wrist-worn sheaths?
okay so I did what we said above and put the lance back in my armband (Parasite lance)...submitted the sadie scroll.. and got this reply
The merchant's last response was: Hey, Zurd. Are you able to resubmit this using the actual pike side, please? Thanks, Sadie
so then I pulled out the lance....and the scroll...and did Write Change to update the scroll...
now it says
s>read my scroll
ALTERER's SCROLL
This scroll is used to hold a description of your alteration request. At this time, it has not been set to alter any specific item. You must WRITE to it before going to see the alterer. Requests typically take TWO WEEKS to complete.
This scroll is good for description alterations and other Premium Point services defined by PREMIUM 9 only.
To see the commands, type WRITE by itself.
so do I have to write new again now that I've done the write change and start the process over?
it seems to have wiped out our prior conversation
which is concerning
or at least confusing
okay line above for clarity
s>write change
Your scroll is now set to alter your emerald lance.

Yeah… I’m thinking the GM that grabbed that one might not understand that particular script is weird (and why those are better as a live service); I had mine altered on the weapon side and it just reverts back to the original design if you put it away and resummon it.
I guess its just an issue with how the old system does or does not communicate...the new system will be better. Just gotta wait for it.
That was me. It was being weird on the armband side. After you wrote back initially, I tried to come join you in person to try to work it live but you had logged out. I'll try to grab you again in the near future so we can figure out how to make it save properly on my side.
I’ll be on most of tomorrow day. And yeah it’s crazy
I changed my scroll. I think I had it wrong.
I want to meet the person who submits their Sadie scroll the first time and confidently stops thinking they somehow didn’t wrong 😬
Once my pike is done I’m going to do this all again with a dagger. But I’m not expecting as big a hill as it isn’t scripted. I’ll still obsess about wording after I submit it though.
I eventually want to do my armor and cloak, both scripted. 😆
Some scripts are probably okay but if it’s some kinda evolving thing that changes the item then it’s difficult. So my parasite or sigil for example vs something that just flares.
Yeah sigil set, all 3 pieces 😆
no clue if it's allowed but also feel free to DM if you can't find me and I'll make myself available if possible. hate to string things out if I can help the process.
You get your stuff worked on yet?
Oh yes I posted on another channel but Casil is a master of fixing that which cannot be fixed. its all done but don't try doing a parasite unless you are willing to be patient and it can't just be done automatically. It is, however, fully funcitonal now. I'm very happy.
That’s good. I was just wondering. I’m still waiting on mine
Question: Regarding the undershirts that can temporarily change your "body type" in character description; can the "body type" verbiage for these be altered outside of the "Trim and Proper" shop located on the wedding concourse? As in, can a GALD/Feature merchants or Sadie scroll be used to change these?
There are only 16 body options available at Ostwicke Hall at Summit Academy, which seems to be the reasoning behind weirdly restricting this feature for player customization. This limitation really baffles me.
No, only the options on the concourse are available for those, and only from the concourse. And those are different from the Summit Academy options (both new and old), if I recall correctly.
Thanks! Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. The concourse options had one fairly close to what I wanted, so glad I got that.
Anyone else still waiting on a Sadie scroll?
For an alter or a simple thing? I waited like 10 days for an alter. Less than a day for spikes.
The longest Sadie scroll in queue is from 4/17.
So it resets if you change something on it?
Mine is from 3/28 but I had to reword something on it
Did you happen to get a new scroll? If so, that does reset it. If you used the same scroll, I don't think it resets.
So I guess you can’t re write anything on it.
Hmm, I can attempt to get to it in the morning, I'll look through the system or if you want to toss the character name here.
WRITE ACCEPT on it for me?
Ok I did
It should deliver in the next... 10ish? minutes.
I believe it does... but it doesn't hurt to do it again.
