This is already a thing. What you're describing is basically the Absorb Magic feat available to those with Kroderine Soul (sept it's cooldown is 30 sec and it provides other benefits). Might make sense as an ascension skill for those hunting in a couple of the new way post-cap areas.... but aside from that, pures already have excellent defenses against spells and semis aren't far behind them. Now, if it prevented SMR attacks.... you'd have my attention.

The boosts from absorb magic are fun. I changed my timing when hunting casting creatures or creatures with magical abilities to intentionally get the boost and keep it rolling during a hunt. The KS dispel magic feat is handy too for clean-up after an engagement.
Could we make this passive, and just have the opponents spell reflect back at it, rather than trying to time an interception?
This could also be a cool idea for a new type of armor with tiers for increased effectiveness/frequency
Sure it does. Based on what you described, the only differences between them are that your idea would (presumably) prevent defensive spells as well as offensive ones and it doesn't include the boost to STR/Health/Stamina Absorb gives. If you don't wait for a critter to prepare a spell before activating Absorb, it'll fall before the spell's cast and allow it through, it can be used in hard RT, and it has a cooldown.
I'm still not convinced this would benefit pures much outside the divergence hunting areas. Their DS and CS means they can pretty much ignore most offensive spells already after level 25 or so, pures are rarely in hard RT, and if a critter is able to prepare a spell, pures have plenty of time to cast any number of spells that can prevent it if they wish to.
then what am I getting wrong or missing?
then we're just gonna have to agree to disagree 🤷♂️
Cloak of shadows?
