A lot of older Cal boss code has a bunch of if (NPC.ai[0] == magicNumber) shtuff, and since the states are in a god AI method loop and not discriminated theres a lot of logic that's one big messy ball (Such as Thanatos having to deactivate a bunch of things in concert to prevent attacking while despawning versus just having a dedicated despawn state for example)
