Sand blocks are notoriously bad for biome spread on the surface, and neglecting them can lead to damage that's exceptionally difficult to fully resolve without a stockpile of biome sight pots and the clentaminator
(if your ocean fully corrupts it can be difficult to clean the part offscreen period, without the terraformer's much larger spread making missing a block less common)

Basically in dev version there was a pickaxe made from monolith called the monolith pickaxe, and it’s gimmick was being ultra fast but not strong enough to mine cobalt. This was an enjoyable pickaxe but it was removed before release because none of the other wood sets have a pickaxe. A similar function ended up being ported over to gelpick in the end…
I think it was much better suited for a side-grade pickaxe rather than gelpick, which a lot of people craft
