The main function of it is so that there's something to centre her arena around. Since she's supposed to be the one on the offensive, there's no 'justification' of her being summoned. (Although, I think a bunch of bosses are on the 'technically they're the ones attacking you' area.) At least some summons are diegetic, like obviously the Codebreaker.
