But from everything we know, Zeratros was on the verge of death. And his soul would likely disappear for good. Dragons can rebirth, but Moon Lord seemingly had a way to destroy their soul completely, preventing them from rebirthing - It's not only implied through the lore items and such but it also makes perfect sense as to why Moon Lord was able to cull down a significant amount of the Dragon population - Because they literally could not rebirth after they were killed by him.
Realistically Xeroc absorbing Zeratros's soul not only could've been, but likely was, not out of malice, but out of a desire to let Zeratros's soul live on. If Moon Lord almost destroyed the world with the help of the strongest Auric soul.. What if another similar threat emerged in the future, and they didn't have the help of it? I entirely believe Xeroc did it so he could take the mantle of protector that Zeratros had
