A better way of saying what I did is that, as we all know, space is not normally distorted and it takes energy to distort it. Keeping it distorted is hard and once that energy stops being outputted, space will return to normal. If you suddenly remove that energy, then space violently rebounds and releases back all of the energy used to create that distortion
