I've always imagined nymphs as non-sentient facile mimics. It's very creepy to have something which looks... well, uh, humanlike that you might mistake them for a human in low light... saying "please, can you help me?" while lunging at you claws-first. It has no idea what the noises it's making mean, but they lure in prey.

(Which, if you're wondering, was the idea that the pirates were former crusaders who, when the crusades ended, lost morale and also employment and so did as suddenly-unemployed disloyal soldiers historically did and turned to crime.)
...although maybe that will change with the SSO changing a bunch of stuff about Amidas. The Pirate friendship really feels to me like "well, he has to be friends with someone".

Or possibly judge a grown adult more harshly than a person who was a teenager at the time and also suffered a lot separately.
