A bit over 10 years ago, a young orphan girl, barely a teen, was caught in the middle of an apocalyptic event, the brimstone elemental awakening in the city of Azafure. Somehow, she gained the same power as the elemental. The two fought, and though she tried to save the city, their battle destroyed the city anyways. Her brothers, the last relatives she had, died in the calamity.

Considering the great power this girl now had, she was taken in by the local ruler, Yharim, and his advisor Permafrost. The archmage permafrost taught her magic and how to better control it, the two of them became like family.

Yharim, however, wanted her power for his own goals. Being a politician who has managed to convince millions to join his cause, it was easy for him to give her all the things she needed, and tell her how their enemies, the gods and their followers, were evil and responsible for their problems. There was even some truth to it, yharim was the one who rallied the people to overthrow the evil god kings of Azafure almost a hundred years earlier, after all.

And so she fought for him, using her overwhelming magical power to burn entire cities to ash, and defeat even the mightiest of gods. But she'd eventually have her doubts, she had to kill thousands, maybe millions of people, and it would drive her mad.

Some time later, yharim's sights were on Ilmeris, the European Union stand-in under the sea. Their electric jellyfish goddess could charge the waters so that no invaders could enter, and they wouldn't go down without a fight. Out of options, yharim would turn to Calamitas. She boiled the entire sea over several days, killing all who lived there, and easily destroying their gods as well. The desert we see today and the sunken sea were left behind from this.

Permafrost too was having his doubts. He eventually betrayed yharim and tried to leave the cause, for this Yharim ordered Calamitas to kill her. She went to him, but instead used the magic he had taught her to lock him inside Cryogen. She then left Yharim, never seen by him again.

Shortly after this, yharim was rather desperate. By now, his allies had all left him, his war had fizzled out, having destroyed most of the world. He ordered his "ally" Draedon to replicate the witch's power. Draedon didn't really care much at this point, but made an attempt, and that resulted in the clone you fight in mid Hardmode.

Finally, Calamitas eventually finds the player, someone who gains incredible power through killing, and decides to stop them for fear they'd become like another Yharim. She gives up when you wear them down enough. Now you can reunite her with permafrost.

Longer ago than anyone can count, the dragons gained the Auric power from the soul of the world, and so their souls became eternal and could be reborn forever, and they ruled the world. Much later, about a thousand years before the start of the game, a monster from beyond the stars came and killed most of the dragons, they barely managed to seal it away on the moon. A human who served the dragons developed a ritual, and used it on the king of the dragons to take his soul and merge it with his own, and become Xeroc, the first god. With this power, not even another monster like that could threaten the world again.

However, people soon learned of this, and sought to gain power for themselves. They hunted down the dragons, taking their souls and becoming gods as well. None were ever even close to as strong as the first god, they must have done something incorrectly, but it didn't matter. Eventually, only one dragon remained, the only one that had granted the rest the power of rebirth. He would watch his friends souls be taken and destroyed forever, and was not strong enough to stop it. So began the age of gods.
