What if there was another cosmic invader in the past similar to Moon Lord. As there were no auric dragons then, the World was even more defenceless than when Moon Lord invaded, and so the World Soul was severely injured.

In order for this to not happen again, the World shattered its own Soul and spread its power to thousands of individuals. In this way there would be many with the power to defend the planet should another threat arise. While the average auric dragon was "only" on the level of the Eidolon Wyrms, raw strength is not the only deciding factor in a battle. With thousands of individual minds to manage just as many abilities, the dragons would be able to handle invaders much better than a singular entity could.

Unfortunately, with such overwhelming power came stagnation. The dragons would grow complacent during the peaceful millennia and so were caught completely off guard by the arrival of Moon Lord.

I think this idea is fitting, also i remember reading somewhere here that the auric dragons faced a threat akin to the Moon Lord before. Perhaps something like that may have happened

So the strategy of spreading out the power failed. While the dragons succeeded in sealing away the Moon Lord, many died forever, the World's power lost in the battle.

As the King of the Dragons, Zeratros was privy to the will of the World. This time, there would be only one individual with the power to defend the planet. However, this guardian would not be passively waiting for threats to arrive but seek them out and neutralise them long before they can become a threat.
And that's why Xeroc is not present at Terraria much, they're hunting Comsic Abberations and taking them out before they can come anywhere close to the planet.

It is the only way that two pieces can truly merge together.

This changes on the shape of Auric Soul affects the Original Domain because its shape is not what its used to be such as Dragon of Flame domain being shifted to Ash by Providence ascension.

This changes was inspired because the soul shape of a mere Human is not compatible with one like Auric, i do however believe
If a man were to have a soul that is close in shape to a Dragon that would suffice and minimized the changes and would yield to a perfect Ascension.
