Hunter (Actual human name unknown) was just some guy. He wasn't a very wealthy guy. Given the setting of the story is a highly unfair society that is somewhat dystopian in nature this guy had to work his ass to feed his family, or, well, his sister, which was his only living family member
One day his sister got incredibly sick, and despite his best efforts, he realized he wouldn't be able to get a cure with his current wealth

So one day, he saw a campaign being held by one of the lords of the cities (basically the most powerful people in the setting, each one holds power over one of the "cities" the story takes place in) where basically, they'd work as a soldier in a army and if they survived, they'd be massively compensated
so he decided to take the risk, and signed in for being a soldier
what they didn't tell him though was since a human body would be way too frail, he'd have to transfer his consciousness to a military robotic body
which he was like. okay, fair enough. anything for his little sister.
so the war raged on, he had to kill people (even if he didn't truly want to ), etc

since by the laws of the cities, you need to go through extensive bureocracy in order to perform a consciousness transfer and still be recognized as a "human", he had lost almost all of his human rights and was now Legally an Object, not receiving any of the money and now having to fight for survival in a society that didn't even see him as an equal
and this was all in the plan of the lord of the city in question btw, not wanting to give away his wealth to 200000 soldiers who volunteered
so in other words
this guy lost his human body, his rights, and his sister, all because of this one guy
so currently more or less

so currently more or less
hunter survives by being a mercenary, and has slowly grown used to killing people and such, and his only real goal in life is to get revenge - Due to society treating him as less than human, and he himself viewing himself as ''inhuman" due to how many people he has killed, he dosen't really think he deserves to form new bonds or to have a happy life
he mask his sadness with a cocky, sassy, often joking, somewhat jerk-ish personality, and his arc in the actual story has to do with him realizing that despite everything, there will still b people who will care about him, and that what he wanted was never revenge, but rather, to protect those around him, like how he should've protected his sister

One day, however, Azalea moved into one of the cities due to a job opportunity, and thus had to cut ties with Solly (forgot to say thats his name. it's like. short for Solomon. like the magician)
Solly then tunnel visionned into his goal of being a heroic figure, taking on all sorts of dangerous jobs in hope of getting more experience and one day being able to become a respectable figure of benevolence
This would lead to them eventually joining the same public safety organization as Lilith and Hunter (Lilith is the main protagonist)

Azalea's personality throughout the years has completely shifted as she gave up on any optimism she previously had and instead is essentially forever stuck on what can be best described as a boring office job except the boring office job involvs performing experiments on people
Normally she'd be horrified by the thought of doing any of this, but throughout the years, she adopted the mindset of "If i don't do this, someone else will. There's no point in fighting against the system. Atleast if i do it i get some money out of it."
Essentially she has given up on hope and has turned into a husk of her former self, doing this her past self would see as a abhorrent
Eventually, Solly and Azalea would meet again

She'd go through Emotions and decide that she needs to protect that hope no matter what cost, even if it means... Keeping what once was her best friend in a simulated reality where everything's fine at all times
Essentially, Azalea is manifesting through solly's simulated reality the hope she wish she had
Eventually, though, the other Guys (Lillith, Hunter) break Solly free, which leads to Solly's trust issues growing, feeling like if his relationship with his best friend wasn't real, then which ones even are?
This would culminate in a fight and emotional conflict beetween Azalea and Solly where Azalea realizes that Solly's life also sucked ass, but he still held onto his morals and hopes no matter what, and that she could've done the same, and Solly realizes that Azalea truly did always care for him, and that even if it may be too late for them to truly reform their friendship, solly has new friends who look after him now

the backstory is that this is a theoretical universe where humanity fucks up the earth so bad they have to resort to finding the closest habitable planet and move Basically All Humans There
the planet is already populated by snake people whose technology is... i'd say roughly at the level of the industrial revolution? humans manage to make contact and move there without much conflict but there's a pretty big conflict of technology because they're suddenly mingling with a species way more advanced than them
