Well, my idea is:
The god is essentially making a "pact" with you in that your wounds are greatly reduced, but the damage you take is slowly accumulated, and it comes back suddenly later. So in other words, the ''gamble" is that the god lets you be much more resilient, but you better hope that the amount of wounds you took isn't too much so that you "Lose" the gamble and drop dead later
