I think DS being semiaquatic to some degree makes sense. Its counterpart in the sea isn't nearly as land-bound as it and, considering they both have teeth and whatnot, I'd guess that in terms of evolution that the filter feeding evolved pretty recently and recent ancestors of theirs were probably big chasing predators how the DS is currently, especially with how fast both can move.
