Dragon protects terraria from Fovos(moon lord), many dragons died and can be reborn with Yharon by resting their auric soul in the dragon eeirie or smt.(idk) Zerathos The primordial light dragon (basically the unmatched power of the sun) auric soul got consumed by Xeroc (it's unknown what happened even the lore item doesn't know) becoming the first god, hearing this news people started committing genocide against dragon, Yharon the last dragon auric soul was offer to young Yharim to become the king of god, but he refused and he got sentenced to death by treason, when he fell to the underworld lava yharon hatch and save Yharim, and to pay it back Yharim start a crusade (genocide) against all god and it's follower and he fucked the terraria lmao

As ploo said Moon Lord attacked terraria a really long time ago. He was incredibly overwhelmingly powerful back them, and the dragons, which lived in terraria and acted as the protectors of the world, having powerful souls known as "Auric Souls" which granted them domain over certain aspects of the world, fought it. Unfortunately, due to ML's immense power, alot of them died and the only managed to seal ML, not even fully kill it. At some point, Xeroc, a human that was in service of the dragons as a monk, absorbed the soul of the strongest of the dragons (Zeratros) by using an specific ritual, making it so Xeroc ascended to godhood and became the first god. Whilst we don't know the exact context of this situation, it seems highly likely, based on the information we do have, that Zeratros willingly let xeroc consume his auric soul, likely to prevent another tragedy such as this one from happening
With Xeroc performing the ritual, it wouldn't be long before words about it spread, and more people would want to ascend into godhood for their own reasons. This was the catalyst for Dragons slowly going extinct at the hand of mortals who absorbed their souls to ascend - Do note, however, that not all Dragons were good guys. There is atleast one more or less confirmed case of a Dragon that was very much malicious and kind of deserved to be killed.
At some point, Yharim, the mod's main villain, was chosen by a specific group of tyrannical gods (Note, not "by the gods", but "by a specific group of gods") to be their god-king, as he was destined to consume the soul of the last auric dragon, Yharon. However, he rejected their offer, and thus was cast down into lava for it. However, Yharon would then save him, and they would quickly bond. It wouldn't take long for Yharim's hatred towards the tyrannical gods which cast him down and Yharon's propaganda regarding gods being absolutely evil and dragons being absolute good would lead to the two of them to not only become basically best friends but also start a nearly 100 year long genocidal crusadea against every single god aswell as their followers if necessary
