Well the lore item is called Prelude, so I’m assuming Yharim is describing what happens before the events that happened in Requiem.

Zeratros himself was gravely injured. It seemed his power, along with his life, would be lost forever.
One mortal, sworn to the service of the Dragons, rose in determination to save their virtuous King.

With that in mind, this section of Prelude then tells me that Zeratros’ auric soul was fading away after the battle with Moon Lord. This is supported by the fact that the line earlier to this specifically states that many dragons, dead or alive, were unable to recover their powers as well.

So I’ve interpreted the events in Prelude and Requiem as:

• Moon Lord arrived in Terraria and devastated the dragon population.
• Many dragons were injured or killed, and for some reason their auric souls were affected in some way that meant their powers were lost and the dragons were unable to reincarnate.
• Zeratros was one of the casualties and was fading away.
• Xeroc, determined to save Zeratros’ life, visited him.
• one cutaway gag later and the first god is born
