There are three essences in Calamity, each type coming from creatures that are environmentally related.
My headcanon is that magic/mana is a fundamental element in living beings (however that is classified). So certain environments require creatures to adapt differently compared to others, and adapting to those environments caused/required the mana of those creatures to change.
So the essences that drop from those creatures is the "factor" that allowed those creatures to adapt.

It's not very airtight, but that's what I can come up with on short notice.
