especially with higher defense from calamity items reducing damage by a flat amount after that 40% nerf
stronger enemies are enemies of the people
it felt like the game had really restarted. yknow how you struggle a lot at the very beginning of the game? you'd get that same feeling in vanilla from hardmode
To me it makes death mode feel like a joke compared to vanilla expert mode with the sole exception of boss fights, which feels wrong to me
I see enemies being treated more as minor inconveniences and so making them minor makes sense tho
downside is killing enemies become mindless
death mode also buff enemies but they still die before doing anything
i think its also because vanilla enemies are well, vanilla enemies
they dont have the same scrutiny applied to bosses like calamity does
in fact, calamity's own normal enemies are rarely interesting imo
I'd say calamity enemies are pretty interesting tbh

a lot of sunken sea ones are cool
clams not aggroing til you hit them a bunch, that one enemy dashing away when you hit it, prismbacks doing more damage if you get hit by the spikes on their back

and thus it's disappointing when Calamity doesn't iterate on those conventions
There are a lot of Calamity enemies that just use vanilla AIs still
Astral and Plague enemies when they just use the same AI with a debuff thrown on
i was so elated when i recently saw the reworked ice clasper
like, "YES! IT'S NOT JUST AN ICE EATER OF SOULS ANYMORE"
some astral enemies that arent just clones are pretty good

So many bosses get reworks and redone, even vanilla, meanwhile enemies are left in their original state for years until the biome itself is reworked
hives (or Astraglomerate as it will be called) is more unique, but probably just needs to be made more threatening

For instance I proposed that Melter would still have the Bat AI but it would constantly drip down damaging projectiles below it, like those fat fly fuckers in the Infected Crossroads vertical shaft room in Hollow Knight, yknow the ones
But Melters didn't even end up getting that
They're just still Giant Flying Foxes with no differences afaik

I mean, in most games enemies still pose a threat. Think dark souls, hollow knight, ultrakill, metal gear, etc. etc.
All of them have enemies which are threatening when first encountered, and not complete pushovers

((Fun Fact. Back then I proposed Virulings (Plague Derplings) to be a non-threat enemy. The plague took their legs and so they simply can't walk anymore, they flop around ineffectively like Goldfish on land. Just something to make the plague seem disturbing instead of serving a gameplay purpose))

there's a charm to barreling through caves holding lmb and just killing everything but it gets bland when it's the entire between-bosses experience

Instead of yknow players learning to use actual debuffs like confusion or glacial state or knockback (not that most take knockback bc knockback is such a bloated stat)

tbh, as much as they are bloated to all hell, I actually enjoyed GFB in vanilla because the enemies were actually a threat. Like I'm not even joking when I say I had to resort to wearing angler armor when mining because bats would two shot regardless of gear and the spawn reduction was super helpful. I know it's not for everyone, but I kinda enjoyed that kind of theory tbh, intentionally using gear and weapons that would allow you to reduce and knock away things like bats
i think the biggest thing about master is that they went with a crazy stat multiplier
then realized its crazy on bosses so they nerfed it
and then kept enemies the same difficulty (more buffed than bosses)
they got the reverse calamity diff

GFB in vanilla is the one time that isn't true, you are literally dead like 90% of the time, you just stare at the respawn timer the full event. Although calamity reducing master timers a ton removes that issue

By loss condition I mean some way for you to fail the event, in the same way you can fail a boss fight by dying and the boss leaves without giving you its loot

Drop rates increase the longer the event goes on like frost/pumpkin moon, dying speeds up time by an in game hour
(I can understand the argument behind a different design philosophy for the invasion events.
They're an active inconvenience, the ""loss"" condition is that they're still happening and bugging you in your safe town, you just have to get rid of it.
At most they're a time cost as you have to wait out respawn timers and for your NPCs to respawn. And time cost isn't invalid, that's the core of most video game uhh motivation)
invasions feel like the game punishing you for no reason and making you stop what you're doing to go deal with them
with the martian example you can beat the martian invasions with "no loss" but if you have to do it again that probably means martian saucer didnt drop the damn item you wanted

I actually really enjoyed vanilla gfb, strong enemies combined with having to dig to get anywhere combined with an excess of traps meant you had to slow down, which is something I think is massively undervalued currently in cal
right now it feels far to easy to just blitz through half the game in one play session because nothing poses any realistic threat outside of bosses
Even Minecraft has higher stakes in common gameplay largely because of keepInventory = false being the default
Any expeditions you take away from your house run the risk of you losing everything that you're carrying on your person. The more you prepare, the more you can lose.

Obligatory "what difficulty is this on" question
Revengeance, Old Duke on normal is just... dunno how to explain it, I just fly around for a couple of minutes, shoot him, and then he dies
I basically changed difficulty to normal to jusy skip him and get his rogue weapon so I can finally start the dog fight
There is a huge difference avtually between those difficulties, on normal I fly around without any care or concern, shoot him and then he dies, revengeance Old Duke fight is very different, though, it's mostly the same, but when I fly around and shoot him for half an hour he is not dying
old dukes issue isnt with the hp pool being too big its with rest phases not lasting long enough and having too high DR when outside of rest phases
its the old aureus problem
Maybe this, I suggested how this mechanic could have been made better
I gave Ceaseless Void fight as an example, there is also phases where Void itself does not takes any damage, and this part is as interesting as the other knez and you can as quickly beat it as the other one, and yet ut's still incredibly challenging
the way aureus was fixed wasnt by it losing max hp it was fixed by lowering the default dr and making rest phases last longer

Yeah, this is an issue not with the boss but rather not learning the rest mechanic. The problem seems to be that the rest mechanic isn't telegraphed well enough and not a boss health issue.

Maybe this could be a fix, but the problem with the Old Duke is that he takes incredibly long time to kill
old duke does not infact take too long to kill if you are using good on-tier gear
that was the issue with aureus
I wouldn't say that it's because rest mechanic is non-intuitive or something, it's just very brief period, and even if I shoot him like, absolutely constantly, both on the rest periods and outside of them his hp is still crawling at the spid of a snail

nah, post plant (the first time infection immunity becomes relavent) has enough means of debuff mitigation that it'd be kinda bad
that being said the accessory in its current state is super overtuned, 20 defense and increased life regen for the low low price of eating your swiftness potion is insanely strong
Or a sunflower, which is even easier to get than a swiftness potion

Mana cloak is a great substitute that lets you keep attacking without waiting as much but in a more fun way
