am i going to notice any difference between 1ms vs 0.5 ms response time?
In competitive gaming, every frame matters. Introducing Acer's VG240Y 0.5 MS 165Hz Gaming Monitor - the Full HD resolution monitor that can keep up with your game play. Through AMD Radeon technology, the game’s frame rate is determined by your graphics card, not the fixed refresh rate of the moni...
this one is .5 ms
with 165 hz
fire deal ngl
No difference really, but you can always use reviews on YouTube to help ig
^ youtube is honestly the biggest help
TN has better refresh rates but IPS has WAY better colours and a better viewing angle, I would go for ips even if you lose out on refresh rate.
I believe gsync is for NVIDIA gpus, while free sync is for Radeon gpus
but unless you're planning on using them, I wouldn't worry. But if you are, there's some good videos explaining what gsync and freesync actually are
IPS and VA Panel are just as good these days
Same shit these days
gsync is for nvidia, freesync is for everyone (exceptions apply)
if you see gsync ready in the marketing material, it's a freesync display
as far as your eyes are concerned, they're the same thing
uh
I am here
Alright I'll give you a few questions I've prepared for this sort of thing
Alright
Answer those and it'll help for knowing what to do
Alright
- Is it PC only or other parts too like monitor or keyboard or mouse
- Budget. And do you actually want to spend that much or try to reduce it.
- If you have a monitor already what resolution is it?
- Do you already have a computer or laptop and will that still be in use after buying this computer?
- Is portability something that concerns you. Aka do you want your computer to be big or small or medium size
- What will it primarily be used for
- Do you have any brand preference like intel or AMD or are you fine with anything
- How long do you plan on using it/How long do you want it to last
- When do you plan on making the purchase
- How sensitive are you to noise?
Well I’m only looking for pc parts I and a tower
My budget is
2,500
USD?
Indeed
That's quite a hefty one, alright continue
Actually before that, do you actually want to spend that much
Yeah I’m willing to spend that much
Because realistically even a 1000USD machine can be very good, it ultimately depends on your needs
We'll know when you answer the other questions, carry on
And sell it after two weeks?
Don't interrupt man let him answer the questions
Start with something reasonable so u won't regret your choices later.
- I will not be using my old pc
After the purchase
Portability doesn’t concern me
- my pc will primarily be used for gaming and work related things
Can you elaborate on work related things
Study
So just documents and meetings and videos? You won't be doing something like video production or 3d or programming I assume?
What about steaming? Like on discord or twitch or youtube
Well ill stream time to time to my friends
- I don’t have a brand preference so I’m fine with anything decent
- I plan on using my pc for as long as I can
- I plan on making a purchase during the following week
- I am not sensitive to noise
The monitor you mentioned, are you using it right now?
No unfortunately as my pc is in my gaming room
Alright, later when you're free or able to I'd like you to check on the refresh rate of that
Your primary purpose is gaming, can you tell what kind of games?
i was not sensitive to noise either until i moved my nas with 10 clicking drives out of my room which made me appreciate silence
Well I guess I will wait for that day
Until then I’m not sensitive to noise
Oh, yes I’ll mostly be playing high end games suitable for a decent computer in order to run the games
Such as
I am not really sure of what games as of now
But I would need a pc that can run games well
Alright
The first and most universal advice I can give is, for whatever parts you'll be getting, investigate different stores both online and locally for the parts, as whatever suggestion you might get might end up being for nothing if the parts are unavailable or priced much differently
Alright
If you happen to be in a country that supports Honey, the browser extension, try that, and their website also allows for searching the same thing across different stores
Not sponsored lol, I actually use it
My pc is dead silent after a lot of effort and adjustments
Even with load
Yeah I use it also
Anyways, for the parts themselves, at that budget you can pretty much go top of the line. The question is do you want to
If all you do is gaming, and yes it can be heavy but you don't need something like a 16 core processor, then you can definitely get a very powerful build for around 1500$
Can you tell which country you're in, there's a website called pcpartpicker that lets you easily see and build a computer and it collects prices from different stores
I’m in the USA
Ah, perfect, I'll send you a pcpartpicker link in a few minutes then
Alrighty
I like my pc to be loud
you bought 100% of the cooling so you're using 100% of it
That's called overclocking I think.
Yes.
So my power is out right now and I'm almost out of mobile data
I'll be able to assemble the list when it gets back in 11 minutes
Alright

alright lets get down to business
Alrighty
so you have in front of you 4 options.
realistically, in games they differ by about 10% at most. in a blind test you won't notice
the first two options are from intel. they offer the better gaming performance compared to the last two, which is AMD. but as you'll notice they also cost more
in terms of gaming they're all about equal, they really just differ in terms of core counts.
The reason I even listed this many options is for you to see what you'd get if you paid more. Core counts are very useful and important for productivity, but if all you do is gaming with a bit of streaming on the side, you can completely ignore the 1st and 3rd option
Unless and only unless you ever plan to pick up something like: Blender, Programming, Video production, AutoCAD, really any skill that requires top of the line hardware, you'll be fine. And even if you do, in the future, the 2nd and 4th option are still very good
why o11 in all of them
So, sticking to the second and fourth option:
The second one is better, but costs more. That's pretty much it in a summary.
wanted to reduce variables between fundamental parts
but why o11
cuz its a nice case...
and the others were like 150 to 180 so this felt better at 130
ehhhh i didnt think much about it
just consider it a placeholder for now i guess
it can be changed later.
as for the GPU the 3080 was 1200 dollars while the 3070 Ti was this much on the website so obviously went with that.
@haughty basin so, second one? i can explain further about it then if you want
if you'll be buying using PcPartPicker though then dont use the links above, ill make a better list, just wanted your opinion out of the stuff i changed
Alrighty
ok last thing before i make a new list, do you want the machine to look flashy and awesome or do you not care much about how it looks and you're just after performance
because a lot can be included for looks. fans have rgb rings on them and there's lighting strips too
like this
Id like it to look awesome
Lancool 2 mesh > o11 variants.
considering RGB and just how many softwares exist ill have to match the brand of the case with the cooler/fans/both so there's no need to install like 10 softwares
which is being annoying....
corsair's 4000x RGB is a rather beautiful case and can easily link up with a corsair AiO but the front panel gives very little airflow.
on the other hand, lian li makes fantastic cases and fans both but doesn't have an aio
NZXT's RGB cooler lineup is overpriced, it's 270 dollars for a 240mm
cooler master.....ive seen some of their cases, they might be a viable option
signal rgb >
lian li galahad
alright well thing is i just watch tech vids im not practically experienced
which lian li case would you recommend
i just saw der8aur use lian li so i thought highly of it, and jayztwocents also build in it and being confused as to why there was nothing wrong with it
that was a funny vid lol
idk lian li is not well represented on the russian market so didn't look too much into it when buying a case
i dont really understand what the first model here is, dunno what ld01b stands for
ld01b is my case
silverstone ld01b
it's kind of a hotbox though but there is a mesh front variant called rl08
small boi
he said portability isn't a concern so big size is fine, so i wanna utilize that to let it have good airflow and looks both
but with Signal RGB i can just go for an NZXT case, or really any case.
thats super helpful
that's why you need the lancool 2 mesh
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VN6Pfv (NEVERMIND, CHECK THE NEXT OPTION IN THE MESSAGE I REPLIED TO, IGNORE THIS)
PC Builder - Intel Core i5-12600K, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB ATX Mid Tower
anyone else lurking can see and give opinions
spent a lot of time trying to pick out a case that would look good while providing good airflow. but there was always some sort of compromise. either didn't look very good or cost extra (the o11 dynamic with a 3 set fan and a triple rad galahad added like 400 dollars). so im just, settling on this, as there's no need to buy extra fans at thirty dollars a fan.
and yes, the corsair icue 4000x's front panel is very fine and restricts a bit of airflow. but tbh it still works decent and it isn't a hotbox.
first if you're going neck deep in rgb then you need to check the list of supported devices on the signalrgb website and base your specs off that list
wanted to just make it look good without having to worry about extra cost. i never realized how expensive triple fan packs were, they're around 100 dollars
the 240mm RGB white rad from corsair is 145 dollars and the 4000x icue comes with 3 fans, and is 120 dollars. the one with better airflow is 105 dollars but doesn't have 3 fans.
it wasn't as much neck deep in rgb as much as it was, getting a good case that had good fans so it wouldn't look weird since slots were filled
i would not rely on signal RGB
it's filled with bugs
rgb is overrated, you look at the monitor not the machine
mobo brand rgb softwares are also riddled with bugs
let me correct you, mobo brand software are riddled with bugs
and if you get a gigabyte mobo... RGB fusion gonna brick your OS
Yeah it's really fucky
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/kM7Ycf/enthusiast-intel-gamingstreaming-build yeah so turns out when it comes to buying in America I'm terrible at making good financial decisions. Not used to the currency.
This right here is actually even better as a system yet costs 300 dollars less. So. Just use this
Enthusiast Intel Gaming/Streaming Build
@haughty basin
Hello
I made a full list but i found one which is way better, so this should serve as a very good machine
You can scroll all the way down for the buy links
Anyone know anything specs wise that would be good for just playing GTA / GTA RP, Rbx and maybe in the future higher requirement games?
My bot now replies to users, also 8 ball and rock paper scissors look great ;)
@warm panther @jovial tide You wanna see my bot's old code from when I was 13?
Sure
🤮
it makes me sick just looking at it
what the fuck was i thinking
It makes you cringe, that's good, that's progress
yeah heres what it looks like now
Functionally the same though way more readable
kinda
I like the little #Kill Me comment lmao
Summarizes programming in one sentence
Hi
i switched from hdmi to dp today and my fps gotten worse, any ideas why?
Im using a USB 3.0 type c to display port adapter on a USB 3.2 Gen 1 type c dp alt mode.
Even got the notes too, very helpful for readability when used right
I have an idea to use a modulo to condense the code further but im too tired rn lmao
You must have your DMs open to run this command.
what the fuck
go back to hdmi
damn.. why didn't I think of that
isn't display port better though
not when you use through a dozen adapters via usb 3.0
It's only a type c Display port adapter

Very likely a mux switch thing.
@stiff kestrel has this issue, couldn't post due to anti-spam issues
def rps(user_input : str):
options = ["rock", "paper", "scissors"]
user_choice = str.lower(user_input)
if user_choice not in options:
# Perform ctx magic
return
options_size = len(options) - 1
bot_choice = random.randint(0, options_size)
if options[bot_choice] == user_choice:
res = "Draw!"
elif options[(bot_choice + 1) % 3] == user_choice:
res = "You win!" # represents pairs (rock, paper), (paper, scissors), etc.
else:
res = "I win!"```
bruh
<>
yeah we only allow level 5 and above on that
now to take my dumb ass non-coding out of here
thanks 4 assistance
i was gonna use a modulo actually
i used a modulo there?
yeah i tried to reply to the comment u made earlier about using a modulo but obvs it didnt work
its good that this could easily generalise for expansions like rock paper scissors lizard spock or smth
looks like it burned
and the power plug is smashed in
how do u people manage to destroy things that sit in a shelf away from everything
very common, somehow
Feels like 90% of For Parts/Non-Working consoles on ebay are from people reinserting HDMI cables all day long
some people should get other things reinserted fr
rps = lambda _: random.choice(["I win!", "You win!", "Draw!"])
I'm not wrong
just got some 3D rotational matrices done today
Vector3 rotateVector(const Vector3 v, const Vector2 theta) {
Vector3 result = v;
result.x = cosf(theta.x) * v.x - sinf(theta.x) * v.y;
result.y = sinf(theta.x) * v.x + cosf(theta.x) * v.y;
result.z = -sinf(theta.y) * result.x + cosf(theta.y) * result.z;
result.x = cosf(theta.y) * result.x + sinf(theta.y) * result.z;
return result;
}
bruh you pinged the wrong guy
sorry

@hexed crystal #tech-coding-math message

works like a charm
>>> rps = lambda _: random.choice(["I win!", "You win!", "Draw!"])
>>> rps("rock")
'I win!'
alternatively I recon there is some bitwise magic you can pull for rock paper scissors
I think an xor might do nicely
but wouldn't tell you who wins
rps = lambda _: ["I win!", "You win!", "Draw!"][int(time.time() % 3)]
Yk how lower end GPUs are just higher tier dies that didnt make the cut
Most of them probably have extra cores that works perfectly fine but are disabled
I always wondered if there is a way to enable them
If there was a way and if they existed it would have already been done
with the current state of the gpu market and the overclocking scene
they don't make the cut for a reason
Usually the pathways to those cores have been physically cut to prevent adverse functionality.
if they were fully functional, money hungry brands would not put them in cheap cards
Well, it's also less wasteful.
i dont own the rights for the song or label
lyrics:
Strange, there's comfort in lies
Ways, for you to get by
I can feel your pain
I can hear you breaking
All your hopes and fears
Are here for the taking
They need you, but they don't give a fuck about
They bleed you, but they don't give a fuck about
They feed you the lies, you want to hear it
Bu...
Yeah, it's one of those things where the most resource/environmentally friendly option also aligns with corporate interests.
That being said, I'm ok with them using less than perfect chips for lower-end hardware.
camera rotation gets a bit fucky when I get close to the poles
that isn't being unable to control a mouse, I am mostly just moving it up and down
Guess I have to next limit the degrees of rotation that the camera can have relative to the forward facing direction
@latent drum There was on some CPUs
No like , for example it have extra two cores but it aint enough to be another tier
some Athlons, Turons, the ones with ugly names could have their third or fourth cores unlocked
I know there were 5 cores AMD cpus
Its either they do cut the die even more after the first cut but that would cost more money
Dies get tested after they get cut
So probably they aint physically disabled
Informal survey: If you bought a GPU before the shortage (before September 2020), what was it, and how much did you spend?
I miss the times when high-end GPUs had a $350-400 USD price point.
1660 Super. IIRC I paid $229
My heart is fucking breaking
I paid almost $120 USD for a 4GB 570 ($150 CAD)
RTX 2070s for 300 USD
when i bought a 1080ti it was an equivalent of about $1100 in local money
Where was this? Turkey?
russia
Russia
$160 USD for a 5 year old 4GB GPU is obscene. Fair value is <$100 IMO.
https://i.imgur.com/k9RUa7i.png
Better than $350 it was selling for during the worst of the shortage.
They were selling for $400 CAD on CL in February 2021.
I had the chance to buy an MSI Armor 580 8GB for $130 CAD just before the 30 series dropped, I passed on it since I heard nothing but bad things about MSI's build quality. Kicking myself now
Well, MSI isn't that bad.
It's Gigabyte you want to watch out for.
Yeah, gigabyte is a hard pass from me permanently.
I have some bad news for you...
gigabyte vision though
I'm also passing on buying literally anything from newegg due to selling broken hardware as new or refurbished.
And claiming you broke it.

Remember when you said to watch out for Gigabyte? Well...
RIP
Not like there's anything I can do about it at the moment.

@arctic yarrow The best deal I've seen is $218 USD for a 1660 Ti 6GB:
https://vancouver.craigslist.org/rch/sop/d/richmond-west-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660/7491016101.html
Upgrading to a better GPU so I'm selling this one. Used for about a year. No problems with it at all.
What about a gtx 1060? Granted, if your 570 is still working it wouldn't be that significant of a performance jump.
I'd personally just give it another couple months. Prices have been dropping lately, availability is on the rise
Keep tabs on buildapcsales subreddit
In fact, performance wise I'd say the titan and the 1060 are neck to neck.
It's working just fine, I just worry that it'll struggle with newer games since it's GDDR5 and only 4GB of VRAM.
Canadian, don't live in the US. RIP, I know
You might need to drop new games down to medium settings on 1080p with your card.
I tried medium settings on FS2020 and it looked gorgeous. Too bad it's more of a VFR game, the selection of widebodies is basically nil compared to FSX/P3D or XP11.
How was the framerate?
FS2020 is a really demanding title.
I don't remember, sadly. I only played it for a few days on Game Pass, then deleted the game when I found out the widebody selection was lacking. I really wanted to fly a 777-300ER in a modern title. Maybe X-Plane 12 will scratch that itch.
If I had to guess, I'd say low-mid 50s?
That's actually not bad. In that case, I'd say your card should be fine for the next couple years if you're playing at 1080p resolution.
New games should have AMD FSR support, so you should take advantage of that whenever possible.
It's not like modern titles appeal to me, anyway. Between FO76, NMS, CP2077, BF2042 and the predatory business model of FIFA/Madden/NBA 2K/EA NHL titles, I'm basically playing games from 2018 or earlier nowadays. e.g. Watch Dogs 1, Mafia 1 DE (2020 release but original title was from 2002 so it doesn't kick a GPU's ass like a 2020 AAA title), Cities Skylines, FH4, Civ VI, etc.
Honestly, same.
Have you tried out any of the newer Forza games? FM7, FH5, etc.
FH5 yes, it was fun.
Not something I was very competitive in, but achievement hunting is always fun for me.
I have played both 4 and 5. Things I didn't like about 5:
-Music selection just didn't appeal to me
-Current song and artist playing not visible on the pause menu like in FH4, what a terrible way to promote licensed music
-Very buggy
-So much switching between English and Spanish, people don't talk like that in real life! ("We never met but everyone says I'm exactly like him. ¡Loca por autos! You have to understand, Superstar, in Me-hi-co a Vocho is like the family member that lives in your garage. Papá Fernando loved that car to death."
-No public lobbies so the game feels dead
-As a tropical climate, the seasons kind of blend together. At least FH4 has snow since UK is in the midlatitudes.
-Overzealous banning system for custom vinyls, yet PGG does nothing about obvious cheaters on the leaderboards. FH4 has the same leaderboard problem but at least you don't get banned for a custom vinyl that isn't necessarily rated E for Everyone.
-The wheelspin nerf.
It's sad because 5 is the best looking Horizon game and the vehicle engine noises are vastly improved from 4, there's just not enough about it that warrants spending $80 CAD for the regular edition. But maybe I'm just cheap. The only reason I picked up GTAV is because Premium Edition was free during EGS's 2021 Holiday Sale.
GTX 1060 6g, brand new for 280 dollars in 2018
And used RX570 4g in 2019 for 90 dollars. It was actually sold to me as an RX 480 and GPU-Z says it also is an RX 480 but physically the design is an rx 570
So either the cooler of that was put on a 480 or I got a 570 that thinks it's a 480
I'm hopefully getting a new laptop with an RTX 3070 in it this summer
my laptop just died for some reason
it turns on but only black screen
how do I wipe the system and reinstall windows
I have another laptop available
Download and flash window 10 on a flash drive
It's on their website
Then search how to boot from a flash drive by your laptop
Does this work if the laptop I need to fix is non functional?
any logo?
Nope
best u get the laptop tech support, the issue probably hardware alrdy
is the fans running?
u need a working pc to install windows in the first place
how it happened was, I turned it on but it was being suspicious loudly running, also had an update so I updated it but when I turned it back on it just sat on the desktop unresponsive
What's a good use for a 16 port 10/100 ethernet switch?
it's booting on
16 port?
u want to open up the switch?
I suppose I could sell it locally for $30.
I don't generally have a use for switches less than 10/100/1000

As embarrassing as it sounds, i am only now planning to upgrade to 16 gigs of ram
not embarrassing
Enjoy your extra ram, friend!
definitely not salty that 3 of my DIMM slots aren't working right now
Aye guys
what's up
How goes?
16GB is a huge upgrade if you were previously on 4-8gb of ram. Make sure whatever stick you buy enable xmp though and make sure the rated speed is at least 3200mhz
@warm panther Im gonna start making a database for my bot, I'm gonna use SQL because apparently it works with Python. Would that work or do you have any better suggestions?
Sql isn’t a database it’s a query language, any database integrates with any language as they just have a protocol you need to implement in the respective language. With that being said I always use PostgreSQL as it’s one of the more modern sql database
ok mr technicalities you know what i mean
I’m not even being technical your assumption was just way off

But yeah, i ordered it

Good deal or should I keep waiting? ~$175 USD. If it was $150 CAD/$120 US I'd be more enticed, though ideally an 8gig 580 (5yo card) should be <$100 US.

is modmail a good bot to have or there is something better?
I currently have a console and I've been wanting to upgrade to a gaming Laptop, what are some good gaming laptops that run games pretty well and aren't ridiculously expensive?
What is expensive?
Lol, u want a gaming laptop for a price that's under 800???
Let me know when u found one.
I said "if possible, that is"
What geographic location are you in?
Earth
Well, that's obvious unless you're an ISS astronaut.
Oh don't worry, I live on land 👍
I mean what country do you live in?
england
Alright, I'll take a look around.
You'll almost certainly have to purchase preowned at that price
you know, I could also buy stuff from other countries too...right?
Yes, but international shipping is usually very expensive.
true true
@mossy spear How about this?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275308093609
This person does have low amount of feedback tho
291
But it looks like they've sold quite a few laptops.
Yes, at that price I would say looking at used options is the best option.
Yeah it'll probably be way cheaper and it'll prolly save more money.
Even though it's used
as long as it's in good condition, then it's worth it?
You could also try looking around for something else that catches your eye on ebay.
Yeah
Surprisingly enough I haven't even checked ebay yet, I've mainly been searching on Amazon
Amazon is good for finding new and manufacturer refurbished items, but those are almost always more expensive than used.
Yeah exactly
Alright well I'll check ebay for a bit and see what I can find on there.
Thanks for the help.
NP
U can easily find laptops under $800 with GTX 1650
Nitro 5 is the most common
Yea
The one linked was one with a 3060
Yea MSI offers laptop with pretty good specs at a reasonable price but their after sales support is doubtful tbh
Hmm, yeah. That might be a factor to look out for. Personally I do my own support with laptops and other modular stuff tho, so support for me is not even an afterthought.
TBF, that laptop was in pounds sterling, which is worth 1.25USD each. That laptop is effectively worth $1000.
Makes sense now
so I guess just ram and storage?
because other than those there's not much else to upgrade in those things
And batteries.
When laptops I come across get to the point where the motherboard or CPU are fried, usually the support window has passed.
Macbook pro m1 13 inch?
tbh the m1 airs are enough

but modularity isn't something I look for anymore, since the gpu/cpu aren't replaceable you're going to be spending a lot anyways, so might as well go all out with storage/ram (as much as I can anyway)
Car play features looks promising
Hmm, do the m1 airs have soldered-on storage?
Yes
It have
Iam using a GT 740 mean while because i sold my GPU
No
Prev was RX580 8Gb
4 buss days
So from tommo till monday
okay so i have a motherboard with 2 sticks of ram with 1333 mhz, now.. What would appen if i were to to put 2 more sticks with the speed of 1600. Will my pc be normal or??
Your PC will run at 1333 Mhz
And your two 1600 sticks will decrease speed to 1333 mhz to pair up with the other 2 ones
so my pc wont die or anything??
If enough electricity is supplied, your PC should be fine
Although make sure you bought RAM for PC and not server...
oh oke good, ty
@arctic yarrow Since you're so knowledgeable about tech, I thought I'd ask you this. Is a Gigabyte 580 8GB still worth buying if it's $120 US? Same price in Canadian dollarydoos that I bought my 570 4GB at late 2020.
https://vancouver.craigslist.org/pml/sop/d/port-coquitlam-south-gigabyte-rx580-8gb/7492640093.html

Well, I wouldn't say a 580 is worth upgrading to from a 570
No shit? How come?
The performance difference isn't worth the hassle IMO.
If I were you, I'd keep your current card and wait for prices to drop on better performing cards.
I just checked the specs matrix on Wikipedia. 580 has a 90 MHz faster clock (96 MHz for boost), 256 more shaders, 16 more render outputs, +63 GFLOPS double-precision (+67.5 GFLOPS with boost), which seems like such an incremental boost. It's more the doubled VRAM that attracts me.
What do you think an appropriate upgrade path would be? Vega 56/64, RVII, 5500XT 8GB, 5600XT 6GB? Maybe a 16 series? (Obviously used for both.)
I'll have to take a look, one moment
But from what I can see, it appears the 580 gives a 5-10 fps boost over the 570, which I don't think is worth it for an upgrade.
What is your price limit btw?
I don't have a set price limit, it's more of waiting for used GPU to get close to pre-shortage pricing. AKA, "I'll know it when I see it". If I can get a 1660 Super for ~$200 US (not sure which AMD card has similar performance) I'll be a happy camper.
Hmm yeah, that seems to double the performance compared to the rx 570
That would be a worthwhile upgrade.
Since my screen is only 1080p I feel I'd get diminishing returns with the 10-12GB cards that are popular as of late.
@knotty leaf how does this look?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/325221444883?hash=item4bb8b56d13%3Ag%3AzLcAAOSwFGZin2oi&LH_BIN=1
There's a few others at that same price point:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1660+super&_sacat=0&_sop=15&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1
It's enticing...why only one fan, though?
It's a low-profile card
Will the reduced cooling power be a disadvantage?
A little bit. You'll probably see a max temperature of 80c when gaming, so you basically don't have any overclocking headroom.
But if you're not overclocking your gpu anyway, it should be fine.
How will I know this wasn't used for crypto mining (which strains the VRAM)?
Unfortunately, there's no way of telling.
However, I wouldn't worry too much about mining, because gaming stresses out the gpu and vram more than mining. Mining would keep it at a constant temperature, while gaming results in variable temperatures, causing thermal stress.
I hope you're right. I'm asking some other Canadians in the PCMR Discord and they say try to find one w/o import fees
@arctic yarrow I was recommended this card, but I feel like it's still priced in shortage territory ($280 US for a low profile 2060 shucked out of a laptop): https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/sop/d/vancouver-rtx-gb-graphics-card/7492627842.html
used, works perfectly pulled from my hp omen gaming pc nvidia GeForce rtx 2060 6gb tags: gtx 1060 1070 1080 ti 1660 super 3060 2070
Yeah, I'd hold off on that. MSRP for the 2060 at launch was 350. I'd say it's worth 280 if the market wasn't messed up.
Oh good, I'm not going crazy. One of the PCMR mods recommended I pounce on it and I almost did.
Bro i just sold my RX580
Please
Dont get it , its very shit
if you coming from 570 its even worth
Thats like 5-12 extra fps at most
580 is a solid card but I also agree that you shouldn't spend money on an 11% performance uplift
If you read my conversation with Bartor, you'll see that I have decided to pass on upgrading for now, since used prices are still out of control.
It aint
You need a very good version to stay cool
I did read back when it was new, but I had a sudden urge to pile on. My apologies.
And it have powerpeaks up to 192W
No worries
@latent drum fair
I have this doodoo Maxsun model that sounds like an airplane under load, so I set a lessened fan curve and it stays quiet
still, just a loss of <20fps isn't that bad on a card that gets >100 in many titles
$200 US for a 2060 would be ideal, but I don't think I'll see those prices until Nvidia stops providing drivers. Especially with the inflated MSRP of the 40 series coming
Mine is Gigabyte, which apparently is a crappy board partner
i mean tbf 580 is just an older card with boosted clocks and we know from intel how well stuff like that translates to temperatures
And with how crap the coolers are , undervolting is effective with open case
200$ 2016 overclocked gpu with flagship TDP
(at the time)
People really under estimate how efficient stuff got
Sucks same power but less hot
The complaints about the RTX 30 series...
Yes, power usage is up. Did your 1070 also have dedicated raytracing hardware and dedicated machine learning hardware? Did it have a much larger video decode/encode block? GPUs are taking on so many extra jobs now
I mean its only above the 3080 with heat issues
Most 3060 TIs in the market suck 200W-220W and run mid 60s C
Tell this to someone 4 years ago and they would be asking you what asus strix rog magic is that
4090ti finna be sold like these review packages you see from msi and shit
comes bundled with a 1600w power supply
I dont care if it sucks big power
Just if its cool
I dont think we are at the point were the silicon is efficient enough to passthrough 450W of power
I think next gen 300W would be good with decent coolers
yes but
if you have silicon that can passthrough 300w
get 2 silicons to passthrough 600w

Remember silicon is basically a giant dynamic resistor
Sadly next gen isnt MCM
Gaming stresses the GPU more not the VRAM
Mining kills vram easy
I have done alot of AI , calculations and shit in VRAM before
Never got that stressed as mining
Well, you're more qualified to talk about it than I am. Thanks for clearing up that misconception I had.
Also most miners overclock the vram
Like by alot
Thats why alot of mining cards have faulty or dead vram
That wire always disconnects on one side
If you take it to a shop they can solder it for free
I find it mind blowing that the 6950xt performs 5% less than the 3090ti while costing $1000 less and uses about 150w less power.
Makes me wonder how it would have performed if they decided to use the same power draw.
They cant just use the same power draw
IK, but I am wondering what the amount of performance would be if AMD designed around drawing 480w.
3
The reason amd won this gen of graphics cards imo
DLSS is good but the power usage of amd is pretty amazing
Well, AMD has FSR, which is almost as good as DLSS and doesn't require dedicated hardware.
Then again, it's available for nvidia as well.
One of my friends uses it for his gtx 950
IG AMD coming up with a good ai upscaling solution really undercut nvidia, basically renewing nvidia's older cards
barely holding on
Laptop or desktop?
Upgrade your ssd
Hmm, do you know if there's an extra 2.5 inch slot in your laptop?
there is
If you have a walmart nearby, they sell 500gb ssds for $50.
whats the write speed usually tho
Around 550mbps, hitting the cap bandwidth for sata 3
oh
idfk the write speed for my m.2 in my laptop but its not good
thats why i get better download speeds on my xbox lmfao it took me this long to realize
Honestly, for most applications you wouldn't notice a difference between sata and m.2 ssds.
Hmm, is that when downloading?
yes
Your NIC could be having issues.
wtf is a nic
Network interface card.
oh
I assume you use wifi, right?
Try comparing the speeds on your laptop with your phone in the same area.
where would i test like a wifi test website
speedtest.net for your laptop, the speedtest app for your phone.
it says 20 but i get 2 for my laptop
Hmm, are you looking at the speeds on a steam download?
That explains it. Steam measures game downloads in megabytes per second, while steam measures in megabits per second
a byte is 8x larger than a bit
oh
So if you're showing 2 megabytes per second on steam, its 16 megabits per second.
oh
So there really is nothing wrong other than two different measurements being used.
makes sense
Anyway, I'd check walmart or amazon for a 2.5 inch ssd to increase your storage.
https://www.homedev.com.au/Free/PatchCleaner running this might be good
it deletes waste from windows update folders
it does wonders for me at work and one time i used it to delete almost 130gb of unused windows update files
i use this after every update
never worked for me
What do you think the expanded bandwidth of PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 will be used for?
One consumer use case I've heard of is reducing the # of lanes per device. So a PCIe3 x16 GPU might only need 8 PCIe5/6 lanes
Moar powerful gpu!
I think most of the demand will be on the enterprise side. Fast bus access scales well with racks upon racks of servers all doing number crunching
Storage
For direct storage
Oh yeah I forgot about DirectStorage. I was thinking more along the lines of enterprise getting the most out of PCIe 5/6
m.2 NVMe slots on the backside of the GPU
do it
and USB-C display outputs, bring them back

Excuse me
Umm my pc is showing blsck screen and idk what to do
I plugged into mobo, gpu both not showimg
Tried hdmi instead of pci
Nvm sorted it
That looks like one of the temporary files that window create while installing a new software... Sometimes it doesn't remove them after.
yeah, idk which but np
Someone really good with GTA V modding?

Anyone else look at a guide for implementing FIDO2 auth into any sort of backend framework and have a brain short circuit?
I'm looking at doing it in FastAPI/Flask, but it seems just as convoluted as the Django, Spring Boot, and ASP guides
I didn't know sorry.
Secondly I wasn't planning to use it for Online just for normal SP
Once again my pc surprises me with a new random issue
Every now and then, no matter what im doing my pc freezes
Audio starts stuttering, screen stutters, keyboard/mouse stop working for a second, and any keys i had pressed when it happens get stuck and i cannot get them unstuck without rebooting my pc
Anyone knows why this could happen ?
maybe you're due for a clean install?
Might be a storage issue
Look at your HDD led when that happens
Verify windows filed and update what you can from BIOS to graphics.
I occasionally get this weird buzzing sound for a short moment while gaming or watching videos, happened before too, but started happening even more frequently after the RAM upgrade
gsm buzz
huh
buzzing
Idk how to explain it
Sounds like electronic noise. Also believe it or not ram vibrates very fast. Which would result in some electronic interference
The inside of a computer/ laptop is a very noisy place.
What could i do to prevent that?
Few things are preventable. The easiest is buying an external DAC, which is like an external sound card that is self isolated from the pc.
Harder options are trying better cables with insulation, if the cable is picking up the noise
If the noise is coming from inside tge pc an expensive in line noise filtering cable could work.
I really just recommend the DAC/ amp life its the easiest and works best.
Do you also know, what to do, if my headphone and mic jack do not work together? Essentially, if i plug both of em in, it will keep cycling between the mic and headset, they do not work together properly

there is an equivalent to this on mobile called "amoled" but you can't enable it on desktop
Well yeah, basically nobody has an OLED display for pc
yeah but all I care about is looking nice
but those who do can flex on plebs
tfw i get flexed on
the proper dark theme. Instead of just grey
can i have a build override that allows me to accept nitro gifts thanks u @slim bluff
you wouldn't need it because no one will give you one anyway
people are so polarised on this one, some people love it some people think the normal "dark" mode is better
I'm in the camp of absolutely loving it
It seems all of my programmer friends love it too since the programming culture seems to be how dark can you get your editor as possible
yes but that would allow me to
for myself
can you not do that already
it would appear that you've been living under a rock for the past 3 months
no i can't
without doing dumb shenanigans because discord doesn't allow me to
So how do you go about buying nitro then? Or is just running on left over nitro credit rn?
Anyone big brain with pc wires?
Lol is this discord’s way of standing with Ukraine
As long as they're hidden away, I don't even worry about how tidy they are 😭
No like
As long as the back panel shuts
How to connect them
I can do most
Some just make no fucking sense
Welp last time I did this I just plugged shit in and it worked

I know how to build a pc that’s literally the only part I kinda have trouble with
All the time oli boi
Don't be too hard on the USB headers, they break off easily
This shit is pissing me off though
I can’t undo it without ripping out the whole connector
And there’s no latch or anything
Noted ty
Yeah you're fucked, gotta accept it like that lmao
wiggle it
Did that
the freezing is happening more often now, nothing weird showing in task manager
Wot freezing skippy
this
Slow storage or windows doing windows things
Maybe you got a crypto miner running in the background
There is a dac amp with mic support that would fix that
how can i check that
You have options like the cheap Syba sonic, mid option schiit Fulla, or a bit high Mayflower Arc
Update windows
Schiit is like 100-300
50ish, 100ish, then 150 to 300ish in that order of what I told you
Well, a bit too much just to be able to use both my mic and the headphones itself on my headset...
shitty pr stuff tbh
kind of like github getting rid of master
does nothing for black rights and no one was ever offended by it
just trying show that they support blm

Ok so I just fixed Win11 from a serious application breaking issue. Discord wouldn't start and Event Viewer wouldn't either. I scanned for malware using bootable AV, nothing. Then I did some research. On a whim I tried what a website suggested; check Window Features for .Net . Sure enough .Net 2.0 and 3.0 were not selected, they were disabled and removed. Upon selecting .Net everything worked. No fucking clue what removed .Net

should've stayed on 10

Does it have an SSD? If no: buy ssd
Does it have an SSD? Install linux and maybe get another 2 years of life
If none of that helps, buy new laptop
yes a cheap 250gb ssd will do wonders for an old craptop
Does it have extra ram slots? download buy more ram
Also make sure its not thermal throttling too hard
Yup
I agree
This is the problem with the internet ppl don’t let the big boys handle this stuff. Like governments are already dumping millions into Ukraine.
If I reset my xbox and choose not to reset my games and apps would all my saved games be OK?
Your Xbox settings will be reset however your games and apps saves etc will stay on the console
I can code too but can't even insert a sd card reader properly
ive got an external monitor but its not showing the desktop
windows is detecting it
and the menu on the monitor is working fine
but its just a black screen
i've also set the project type to duplicate
and also updated windows
but still
yes
i think
it came in like an hour ago
i would replace it but im not sure if its the cable's fault, windows or the monitor itself
Are you using DP or HDMI cable?
HDMI is shaped like a D if you look at it from the front
DP has 3x90° corners
And one rounded one

Yeah no idea, just fuck around with it
On/off
Replug cable
Change ports
WAIT
WHERE DID YOU PLUG IT IN
Motherboard or gpu
lappy
These freezes are getting worse now
Before they lasted a second at most, now its a solid 5 seconds of freezing
i think if you have it set to duplicate then both monitors need to use the same resolution
and maybe even refresh rate
try to set it to extend
see if it works like that at all
if not then something else aint work

What CPU are you gonna use it on? That looks like a decent cooler, but I'd probably stick another fan on the other end.
Have one push and another pull
11700
I should probably change the fans
These are small and ancient
Hmm, I don't think you'll have any OC headroom, but at $30 it's probably worth the risk.
Hmm, the cooler master 412 has less cooling capacity and is able to cool down a 9900k OC'd, and that requires more power than a 11700. I think you should be fine.
Ya , i think fin count is a bit low but the power of 6 heat pipes

Udemy courses, are the certificates they give worth putting on a resume? I'm getting sent lots of free codes but aren't sure if they're worth investing the time into.
Coursera is better imo
@lilac heath thanks friend
Are their certificate things taken slightly more seriously?
Yea
In Coursera u are gonna get a proper certificate from University unlike Udemy which is just a course
It also depends upon the course
I did my Corporate Finance course from Wharton University on Coursera and its certificate is valuable
It was paid but i applied for Financial aid and got it for free
installed win 11 on an old laptop and Nvidia does not want to install by windows update
🎷🐛
Coursera also has professional certs from places like Google which they recognise, and even actual degrees from universities
Found this one for 42$
Don't let that put you off, Windows 10 is more than fine. It's probably better than Windows 11 for the most part right now
win 10 better
Yeah, I don't like windows 11 right now. Too many bugs at the moment.
you can always downgrade the thing
probably should as soon as you get it tbh, they like to load those pc's up with bloatware
I got my 3060 ti for 720$
Then that's probably the best place to start, a job. Or if you're a kid just wait until christmases, birthdays, etc where you get money as a present
Windows 11 22h2 is good but windows 10 is better
What's this?
Oh it's your friend's channel, you shouldn't really advertise that here

what does it mean when my laptops charging indicator blinks when i plug it in but doesnt charge
you might have to check your specific manufacture

yeah i could probably make it better
Probably a broken charging port
does anyone know a program to see whats happening with your pc thats shows more than task manager?
the issues ive been having are slowly getting worse
the freezing and audio cracking still happens
But now it even switches the audio from my headphones to my monitor speakers
and i have no clue what causes it
my software of choice to check all sensors is HWinfo
i would suggest you to keep task manger opened on performance tab and keep watching your hdds/ssds
i did that and it showed nothing on any of my drives or gpu/cpu
i also did a memory diagnosis which didnt show anything either
what about events viewer
dont know what that is
you wanna be there
it might show you something like warning or error
and it might be helpful
ill keep it open and see if it happens again
yeah ik but if it happens and something pops i can see it right away
it logs it with time so

Its a duopoly, not really competition imo
VIA is not viable, ARM on desktop is being handled exclusively by specialists, there's no sort of "open market," I mean
Intel made 300$ i7 for a reason
PPC is dead entirely. SPARC is dead. Even with ARM, software is not there.
Your realistic options are predatory AMD or predatory Intel, each taking turns when they want to be predators
From now on , iam not buying a mew intel platform till they unlock all their CPUs officially
Well a bad thing is still better than the worst thing
AMD just raises prices mostly
Intel just fucking butcher the entire lineup
mmmmmmmmmmmmhyes
You personally solve this by not buying then, fair. Do you think there's any sort of hope for a long-term market-wide solution?
Eh
Government or a third-party regulation? More competitors? Some sort of something something standard and agreement made between AMD and Intel themselves?
X86 is pretty much locked more than Nvidia drivers
