what about gaming monitors

jovial tide
#

some have bad blacks but high refresh rates, some are 1080p but high refresh rates, some are 4k 30hz, some dont have built in speakers for those who dont have standalone speakers, some can't be wall mounted, some can't be tilted in all directions

cold elbow
#

My monitor is perfect

jovial tide
#

1440p or 4k?

cold elbow
#

1440 165hz ips ultra wide

#

Also 34 g sync

regal peak
#

My monitor is perfect for me too since I use it almost exclusively to play games

jovial tide
#

is it the gp850 by any chance?

#

apparently thats a really good monitor

cold elbow
#

No it's lg

jovial tide
#

what model

cold elbow
#

Cant remember

jovial tide
#

gp850 is LG, so it might be that

cold elbow
#

I guess

jovial tide
#

i'll probably get it, looks good for its price point

civic cloud
#

gp850 is a good monitor handshake

regal peak
#

I have a 1080p 240hz

civic cloud
#

LG makes all the good panels anyway

#

and Samsung

jovial tide
# regal peak I have a 1080p 240hz

yeah that's probably okay for most games, especially if theyre competitive multiplayer. But for high fidelity games like forza i'd probably choose a more expensive 1440p panel anyday

#

anything above 165-180hz isnt too noticeable either

regal peak
#

I used to be really competitive but I do kinda wish I had gone with a 1440p just so I could appreciate the beauty of games like rdr2 and gta 5 a tad bit more

cold elbow
#

1080 is enough

#

Especially with today's GPU shortages

regal peak
#

I built my pc like right before the gpu shortages so I managed to get away with a decent one

@slim bluff Wasn't it that bpytop came first, and the author moved on to making btop after the ideas were done?

slim bluff
#

idk

just btop is so much more performant when you get down to 100ms

#

@slim bluff Oh, general thing

#

For programs you install using make, how do you properly uninstall them?

slim bluff
#

you bloody hope there in an uninstall instrution

#

worse comes the worse you'll need to read the make file for where they have been installed

#

and delete them

brave field
#

think I'll stick with py until I understand the makefile

slim bluff
#

is bpytop not in your repo?

brave field
#

it and bashtop are, btop isn't

ah right

#

Just making sure I'm using the correct formula. To calculate the propagation time between 2 links, I divide the propagation velocity by the distance and convert to ms, right?

#

For instance, the propagation velocity of a typical fiber optic link is 0.66c, which is roughly equivalent to 2 x 10^8 m/s. Say I have a link length of 100km, I divide 100,000 meters with the propagation velocity, then multiply by 1000 to get the propagation delay in ms.

#

So that would be a propagation delay of roughly 0.5ms.

i need help my screen likes to flash black for like a second when I do shit like fullscreening a stream on discord ive tired everything

#

grrrr

cold elbow
#

Might be free sync/g-sync thingy

regal peak
#

hmm ive tried turning g sync on and off and it did pretty much nothing

#

this happens with like streams on discord, face cams on discord, youtube embeds on discord, and the little pop up videos on steam, my whole screen just goes black for a second or two

cold elbow
#

What about overlays

#

Or free sync

#

And tbh I can't understand what is going on by your explanation

regal peak
#

its hella hard to explain, but pretty much when someone is streaming a game or something on discord, and almost everything I do causes the screen to just go black for a second, like if I tab out, switch to another server, switch to another application, etc.

jovial tide
#

how does this work?

brave field
#

might include other types of videos, cached items, or things like downloaded advertisements, if you don't have those blocked

#

but shouldn't those videos show up in the files

#

I barely have anything

#

Also what downloaded advertisements?

#

I'm searching for big filed through zarchiver, what folders should I look in?

#

@brave field

brave field
#

/android/obb and /android/media on your internet are common places for caches

#

malicious awful apps that like to download ads to show them when you're offline use their own location under /android/data

#

your own material likely defaults to a DCIM folder

#

If you're using an SD card or adoptable storage at all, that often contributes to the storage breakdown at the bottom too, check in there if so

jovial tide
brave field
#

whatever large file is causing the problems. Go into each app's subdirectory (or if they have a separate, suspiciously-named one, in there) and see if there's anything big

When attempting to access an FTP server created by vsftpd, I encounter this error:

Login failed.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection```
All sources point to SELinux disabling access, but SELinux is currently disabled. Does anyone know what other reason it's not able to use that directory for the FTP server?
analog wharf
arctic yarrow
#

Ok, I have a (small) workaround. I can set up the local root on the primary drive, but apparently am not able to set it up on my secondary drive. It will work temporarily for small files, but 250GB<8TB.

#

Just for shits and giggles though, I'm gonna link the entire drive instead of a specific directory after doing a recursive chmod.

#

I got a different error this time:

Login failed.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection```
#

I assume adding the line "allow_writeable_chroot=YES" will fix that though

#

Hell yes, I'm in.

#

Apparently vsftpd will not work unless every single point in the path is set up with the correct permissions, not just the directory.

#

shit, still not working on the intended path

#

same error, "cannot change directory"

#

Maybe the directory itself is corrupt somehow

#

NVM, linking the directory specifically instead of using "$USER" fixes that.

#

Gonna test FTP access on windows now

#

It works flawlessly

#

Sorry about that massive block of text but I guess typing out the problem and possible solutions seemed to have made the brain juices flow and help me resolve the issue.

i swear i watched pc securityc hannels video on it

#

basically, the malware can still kinda infect your pc

#

in some ways, a standard account is worse

#

and malware will still infect your pc that more depends on common sense and your antivirus

#

I guess a standard accoutn can be useful if someone is borrowing your pc for example, there is less permissions so chances are they cant mess as much stuff up

brave field
#

What he said in his video still backs up the claim though, he just says it isn't as effective as most people say. He loses his virtual external drives and samba shares to the ransomware because Windows doesn't require admin to mount a partition

analog wharf
#

there is still stuff they could mess up but slightly less

analog wharf
#

the only time i would use a standard account if maybe someone else was borrowing my pc for example

#

it doesnt really protect you from malwares, have some common sense and also use a good av

#

but it could be good for people borrowing your pc, they cant really open apps that require admin account/admin privileges as easily and they cant install apps outside of the microsoft store as easily either afaik

#

and yea due to those restrictions it can be better in somew ays

brave field

This is why the world needs more hypervisor options

Steam has a compatibility layer called proton installed by default. You can use that for gaming. Keep in mind you will be instantly permanently banned if you try it on destiny 2, fortnite, and rogue company because the devs are dicks.

jovial tide
#

I am using proton, but srsly, you get banned on those games for compatability? its almost as if they dont want a wider audience lol. good thing i dont play any of them lmao

arctic yarrow

The owner of epic games has a stick up his ass for anything valve, and bungie doesn't want to put in the minimal work required to enable anticheat through proton, despite it already being supported.

jovial tide
#

oof, that sucks for fans of those games who thought they were gonna get better fps on linux and then just got their acc banned

arctic yarrow
#

Yup, and they say it's a non-appealable permaban. All because they want to use an alternative OS or the Steam Deck.

#

On a side note, I actually don't know what kinda black magic valve dumped into proton, but some games, most notably elden ring, have better fps when going through proton.

what version of proton should I use?

Well, I think linux gaming will hit a golden age since Valve released the steam deck (which runs on a modified arch distro). This may most likely cause devs to work on proton support for their games and ensure either native or proton compatibility in the future.

Hello friens,
I have a quick and probably stupid question. My knowledge when it comes to pc parts n stuff is absolutely non-existent.
So basically my question is:

Is my Motherboard ( Asus m5a78l-m/usb3 ) compatible with an Intel Core I5-10400F?

Thanks for the help :)

neon bluff
#

#

Do you have any recommendations for AMD Cpus in a similar price and performance range?

It's an AMD fx-8350

arctic yarrow

neon bluff

#

I'm really grateful for your help :)

arctic yarrow
#

8350 is kinda ancient though. It will struggle with modern titles.

neon bluff
#

It struggles with Valorant and having Discord open on my Second monitor

#

So ehh

#

Lag spikes is all i can say

#

It runs smooth, but has lag spikes from time to time

#

Like, without having discord open it runs with no lag spikes. Discord is just using so much cpu stuff

arctic yarrow
#

If you're budget concious, an office PC with at least a 7th gen intel i5 processor would work ok. Otherwise I recommend a B350 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 3600.

#

Youll need to get a ddr4 kit with that too.

neon bluff
#

So that like a full upgrade-

arctic yarrow
#

Yeah, but your current motherboard is already at the end of it's upgrade cycle.

neon bluff

well, what did i expect for like 230 bucks-

#

Is there any ways i can limit the cpu usage of discord?

arctic yarrow

Unfortunately not.

I mean the components in the laptop would give you better performance if you went with it over the desktop computer, but you can’t upgrade a laptop after you buy it. So while it would be a great machine for a couple of years, if a component fails you’re screwed, and you can’t upgrade any internal hardware to keep it a beast with modern games

Unlike if you went with the desktop, which has weaker internals but you can upgrade them and sell off older parts as much as you want as you save up money. So in the longer term the desktop would be the better option

What’s a good amount of ssd space to have, I’m gonna be using this pc for gaming so I don’t think I need to much

Is 512gb enough

Or could I get away with 256gb

gaming = at least a tb

if ur only gonna store games on it then qlc is good enough, qlc drives are cheap enougg that you can potentially even get 2tb

My kubuntu install got fubar on my server, and I didn't have a kubuntu install on my bootable flash drive at the time, so I installed zorin on it to get it back up and running. It actually seems to perform better and has less instability than my kubuntu install.

#

I wonder why kubuntu hated my machine tho. Maybe it had something to do with the hardware config.

anyone familiar with programming can give some suggestion?
There's a simulation game called 'OMSI2', which is a bus simulator, but suffers from freezing screens and lagging, long loading time etc.
I tried the method as how t0st fix GTAO, using the luke stackwalker, which turns out most function are function started with 'nt', such as 'ntreadfiles'
I am not a pro but I believe this is why its lagging as well as its a 32 bit software
anyone have any idea for 'rewriting' the game? Thx a lot

arctic yarrow

What you're asking is very complex, and most of us (including me) are amateurs at programming. You might want to browse around in stack overflow or some other place for similar solutions.

@hexed crystal Played around with it a bit more, this is what my fps is with max settings (RTX on, DLSS Quality) pogEmoji

#

FPS is rather low however, after doing some tests

#

So I'm wondering what's wrong, cause seeing public benchmarks on this game, people were getting 90-100fps low with DLSS and I ain't even getting that

hexed crystal
#

Uh

#

Probably ultra preformance with low settings

the game is kinda wacky

I am getting subpar 100 fps on ultra with DLSS quality on 3080

#

I do not know why

hexed crystal

Ultra performance DLSS can take you from 40 fps to 90

#

I get 60-70 fps with Performance DLSS on ultra settings on a 3060

1080p too

Does its VRAM or video encode/decode or compute engines work? Any chance it could be useful to toss into your server?

jovial tide
#

Got a question for my ebay listing. So I'm selling my GPU(s) and was wondering, should I list the specs for the card to make it more "official" (I guess?) or do I just list about the card itself? Like for example how long it's been used and whatnot

brave field
#

Absolutely list the specs if the GPU is one that has multiple SKUs using different dies or VRAM configs. "GTX 1060," for example, could be any of 5 distinct GPUs, which could make an auction sell at much higher prices.

jovial tide
#

What about the GTX 1660?

#

Specifically the Gigabyte model

brave field
#

Probably would just list which Gigabyte model/cooler it is and leave it. There's only one desktop 1660 out, so the cooler (and making sure you don't sell a 1660 Ti or 1660 Super at 1660 prices) is all that changes between the branded options.

I wonder what a mathematician would do when they see x = x + 1 in a code base

cursive token
#

what value is x?

#

as x is most likely DEF

slim bluff
#

x could be any number. Int or float it doesn't matter

#

although most languages will likely abstract this statement to x++ or x+=1

arctic yarrow
# slim bluff

I keep myself sane by telling myself "=" is an assignment operator, while "==" is an equal-to operator.

#

Of course, I've now started using "==" in mathematics, soooo....

slim bluff
#

js is wonky

#

JS

> 12 == "12"
true

Python

>>> 12 == "12"
False
arctic yarrow
#

In python, an Int can't be equal to a Str IIRC.

#

I assume in JS 12 === 12.0 would return false, right?

#

Since strict equality factors in types as well.

slim bluff
#
> 12 === 12.0
true
arctic yarrow
#

Hmm, so Python's "==" is equivalent to JS "==="

slim bluff
#

my language is the same

eq 12 12.0 => true
#

yes

arctic yarrow
#

Well, easy enough to fix that in python:

True```
slim bluff
#

python is just significantly better than js in every way

#
> [12, 345, 234, 1]+[]
"12,345,234,1"
arctic yarrow
#

JS is faster though.

slim bluff
#

in what way

arctic yarrow
#

In executing loops.

slim bluff
#

depends how you go about it

arctic yarrow
#

This is also true, you can loop utilizing C in python.

slim bluff
#

you could jit compile a recursive function or memoize a function in python

#

i'm implementing tail recursion optimisation right now in my language so it doesn't have a conventional function recursion depth like python or javascript

arctic yarrow
#

Reminder though, you're still talking to a noob at programming. I still don't know why classes exist in python and why/how you would implement them.

slim bluff
#

in the future you'll be learn all about them... and then you will realise that simplicity is just so much better and classes can go fuck themselves

strong saffron
#

Regarding the why: I just use them whenever I find myself passing in and returning the same set of variables out of several functions.

slim bluff
#

python just needs a struct and enum keyword

#

and remove classes

arctic yarrow
#

Isn't there an enumerate function?

slim bluff
arctic yarrow
#

Oh ok
