98/ME: Shit

r/buildapcsales occasionally has prebuilts with similar specs + a 3060 ti in your price range, which makes things easier, but you may have to manually purchase extra storage or ram, since they cheap out on that.

The listed games are easy to run and your budget is more than enough for a capable prebuilt, used 1060/580, 1660, RTX 20 series, a fully used system, a fully custom build, consoles, etc. There's not really an objectively wrong way to go about getting a PC, other than overpaying on something that can't do what you need it to do

I've utilized moviepy to clip video files to a specific timeframe, but haven't attempted to create one that compresses video files yet. I likely won't have time to do so until this summer too.

I'll be honest, my implementation is rather.... rough. It doesn't utilize a GUI, only a command line interface that requests colon separated values.

The issue with mp4s seemed to be that the audio bitrate was fixed at 128kb/s in the original version which makes the video bitrate < 1 if it's small enough. I made it to be a proportion of the target bitrate and it now works with mp4s. Work so far is on my github

ffmpeg only cares about the codecs so it shouldn't matter what the container is. the earlier issue was coincidental where all the mp4s I had had audio tracks with super low bitrates

The original file is 140mB and 23 seconds in length. I'm attempting to compress it to 80mB. One weird thing is the output file is 60mB

I just tried with another mp4 file and it has the same issue.

Also a Virtualbox VM even with the Guest Additions is still slow asf compared to VMware tools which makes the vm buttery smooth for the most part (yes, you won't be running games still)

I'd say as a beginner hypervisor VMware nowadays is better than Virtualbox

Quick to get up and running similar to Virtualbox but doesn't have nearly as much bugs, UI looks alot better and VMs with the VMware Tools installed are alot smoother

I think the easiest way would be to install Debian/Ubuntu/Rocky + ZFS on a new boot drive, clone everything on your windows drive into a zvol, and pass the zvol to qemu

Windows can't talk to ZFS directly, so maybe passthrough literally your entire system, set the VM to start on boot, and then pretend the whole linux install part doesn't even exist

For the things you want ZFS for, could Windows Storage Spaces suffice? Maybe keep your host as is, toss the data you want into the space, and run owncloud in Hyper-V. (keep google cloud for compressed and excrypted offsite backups)

Kinda sounds like you may want btrfs or mergerfs or Unraid? ZFS can make one device from multiple drives, but expanding it when you get new drives is a pain. you either have to upgrade all of them, or move everything somewhere else before remaking the pool (or vdevs if you have it split that way)

I have no personal experience with the RaidZs but they are very well-loved. The largest reliability concerns with z1 seem to be the aftermath of if one of your drives start erroring in the process of rebuilding it all after a first drive dies. It's more reliable than normal Raid5, where you lose all of your data if that happens, but ZFS can't fix errors in the affected parts.

Comparing them, z1 is often considered a few country miles ahead of Storage Spaces when it comes to reliability and a few thousand ahead of btrfs.
