Which distro has the most guides and support out there? @brave field @jovial tide

inland dove
#

any good cpus? in a $500 budget?

jovial tide
#

In my opinion, the best cpus are with Ryzen, ou shouldd be able to get one within your budget which us better than the intel alternative

civic cloud
jovial tide
#

If you're not talking about taxes, I would recommend buying the ryzen 5 5800x which is exactly in your buget

#

Actually I was wondering about that too

#

Anyone know a good website or something for beginning javascript coders? I started but haven't found anything good for learning it

WHY LINUX ALWAYS MAKES A BIG DEAL OF A VERY SIMPLE THINGS

#

i cant remote to it because no display is connected ... and i have to buy a dummy adapter

prisma charm
cold elbow
#

FUCK THIS SHIT

#

Lmao

cold elbow
#

it's always simple things that triggers me

prisma charm
#

Why you using Linux? 🤔

inland dove
#

Ah. GTX 1650, 16 GB, DDR3, Gateway H57M01 (CPU 1)

cold elbow
#

since docker on windows sucks

inland dove
#

gotcha, thanks

cold elbow
#

IM RAGING NOW

inland dove
#

Im CA

#

#
#

kk

brave field
#

Use XRDP for Windows clients and any sort of VNC or X11 forwarding otherwise. For docker commands, just use SSH. A desktop environment makes it harder to use. Don't use a dummy display adapter for anything, they're entirely redundant.

#

Your support question, use Debian, though Ubuntu has more forum posts and Arch has a larger wiki. Debian is super stable and can use almost anything Ubuntu/Linux Mint/Pop_OS!/Elementary OS have. All the APT commands are the same, and you can use their installers, stackoverflow answers, wikis, IRC chats, and sometimes their repos (watch for dependency conflicts though)

brave field
#

@cold elbow Can you describe your setup some?

cold elbow
#

Wanted to make use of an old system as a server
So I installed popOS and was planning on throwing it somewhere then remote access it by let's say anydesk
But that gives me a black screen because no monitor connected to it

#

Only way is to use a dummy adapter or some complex way to create a fake monitor

#

Once again i waste tooo much time trying to solve a simple issue with linux

brave field
#

Anydesk is not made for servers

#

unless you go with their paid version designed for use in cloud services like Azure or GCP or AWS

#

Pop_OS! is a bit strange for a server setup too

#

Do you need your remote display to output audio?

cold elbow
#

I just want to remote to it locally since i want to work on it from my computer

#

It works fine with my windows server

brave field
#

aaaah

#

What kind of work?

sour marsh
#

I mean I saw Linus nuke his whole PopOS

#

so

brave field
#

I like your thoughts

#

Do work through SSH. If you can't work in SSH, do work on your non-server system, and store the results of your work on the server. If you can't use that, XRDP/VNC will always work without a fake monitor. If you can't use those, spin up a VM and remote into that. This is really an Anydesk problem, no?

#

Know what its called?

#

I'm using Lubuntu desktop for my VM server and don't see

cold elbow
#

Ahh yes more distros

brave field
#

Lubuntu is Ubuntu with LXQT as the desktop environment, identical to Ubuntu otherwise

#

but really, use Debian or Ubuntu server

#

they always work and they're pretty much the same thing minus Canonical's telemetry and snaps

cold elbow
#

Pop

#

Latest

brave field
#

heavily suggest XRDP

cold elbow
#

I prefer anydesk because i can set it up in like 1 minute

#

And be able to connect from anywhere

#

Remote Control and file transfer

#

It's also fast

#

Does it work without a monitor tho

brave field
#

I think you may have to use some sort of VM if you have to use Anydesk. Anydesk just doesn't support headless systems

#

xRDP is alllllmost perfect, there's just no sound by default (obligatory neofetch)

cold elbow
#

Windows doing it just fine

#

And i noticed that the requirements for trueNAS is now 16gb ram

#

Minimum

brave field
#

Works on Windows through RDP shadowing, maybe there's something similar with xrdp but I have no clue

#

TrueNAS, why considering? It has a web interface but you can't access it outside of your network without port forwarding, and BSD has much worse support for something proprietary like Anydesk than Linux

cold elbow
#

I can run some of my services on it

#

Mainly containers

#

The only solution lol

brave field
#

you'll lose remote desktop going for it, you only need containers though?

#

If so, why not go for a Linux instead of a BSD?

#

Docker doesn't even support BSDs anymore

cold elbow
#

Nas is just another project

brave field
#

ah

cold elbow
#

I want a system with desktop environment mainly for remote access

#

Think of it as a VPS

brave field
#

oh

#

VPS services achieve it using VMs as well, doing it on a base install is a bit problematic, hmm

#

xrandr can make a virtual display output, then

cold elbow
#

I tried it

#

Too complex for my stupid brain

brave field
#

xserver-xorg-video-dummy looks like it should do it, a few people are saying it works for anydesk

#

config file is well-documented and is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
The remote display situation could definitely be better though, and I 100% agree that its frustrating (Parsec, why can you randomly not host on Linux anymore?!)

arctic yarrow
#

And yeah, that's the only way to get anydesk to work on linux on a headless machine.

#

The downside? They detect that you're connecting to a linux environment and automatically assume you're using it for business purposes.

brave field
#

Bartor! Hello! peepoWave

arctic yarrow

Yeah?

Hello

#

What were you just saying about a poweredge?

#

#

I'm able to search for local deals again and want to replace my old junk with better stuff

arctic yarrow
#

Unsure, I bet you have a more recent server machine than I do.

brave field
#

Raspberry pi 3A+ with a dead/corrupt SD card, i3 4120 Dell prebuilt I got out of a scrapyard for $2 haHAA

#

They don't suck but neither are good for installing more than one hard drive, I really want either a real server so I can get cheap SAS pulls or a mobo so I can throw drives in a case I have

arctic yarrow
#

I have a dell workstation with a xeon e5-1603 running as my server.

#

Spent $50 on that one.

#

And spent another $150 for the 8tb HDD for my media server on it xD

#

Just checked the model it's a precision T3600

#

Honestly, if you're not going massively overkill, I'd recommend checking out businesses that are liquidating their old hardware, that's where I got mine.

brave field
#

That's a really nice system, and with the option of an 8c16t CPU!
Where do you find business liquidation?

arctic yarrow
#

I found it from my local classifieds.

#

In my case, I went to ksl.com and checked out the classifieds section.

#

Not sure if you have that option.

wired can get in the way a lot and having wireless frees up a couple of usb ports for other things like a web cam and usb sticks for things like a windows repair

besides a mouse doesn't suck up a ton of power. like compared to a controller for consoles a mouse' power usage is god tier

Yea I have had my mouse for 2 years and only needed to replace the batteries twice

arctic yarrow
#

Is there anyone here who is familiar with JS?

brave field
#

What do you need help with? (I'm awful at JS but having the question out in the channel may make it easier for someone experienced to help)

arctic yarrow
#

So I'm using an LC-3 simulator located at this web address for one of my classes:
https://wchargin.com/lc3web/
And I had an idea for implementing an assembler instruction named ".STRINGZP" which would act just like ".STRINGZ" except pack 2 ASCII values into each memory location instead of 1.

#

The idea came to me while I was looking at some possible bug fixes for the PUTSP trap instruction.

#

Right now, the assembler info is located in a file called "lc3_as.js" when inspecting the HTML on that page.

#

I'm gonna throw the contents of that JS file into a txt and link it here.

#

So far, for reserving the required memory space, I think this would work:

    return operand.length/2 + operand.length%2 + 1;```
#

But I'm a complete newb in JS, this is literally the first time I've started to mess with it.

#

For a comparison, this is the option for .STRINGZ:

       return operand.length + 1; // for the null-terminator```
#

I'll likely be taking Web1 next or following semester, which delves into JS.

#

I'm gonna revisit it over TS break and see if I can wrap my mind around it.

i like how its just idioting butchering of both sides with no one understanding how shit works

arctic yarrow

What PUTSP was supposed to do was read all 16 bits in a memory location, then output two ASCII characters on the screen. What it was actually doing was reading bits 7-0 and outputting only that. The issue with HALT was it wasn't saving register 0 and 1 before it stopped the processor.

But now the game doesn't load and spits out this error

looks like two files the game needs are missing

unreal iron
#

How?

#

I didn't delete them

brave field
#

might be corrupt from the drive being removed or something while it was writing to them, or the drive is dying, or it has a different drive letter after you plugged it back in

unreal iron
#

So reinstall the game?

brave field

Is the external drive showing up as F:/ in explorer?

unreal iron
#

Yis

Prior to this I have flushed dns, deleted the %app data, and restarted the pc twice, shut down and turn back on once

#

Those were previous suggestions

#

On the forums

#

Oh and uhh resetting my Nvidia 3d settings to default

brave field
#

You could check if the files actually exist at the paths its looking for and run CDi, but its probably just easiest to use the "verify game files" option in the launcher if its in there

#

if not, reinstall

#

forums might be trolling, no relation between dns not being able to find a local file

unreal iron
#

The company actually suggested deleting the app data and that if it didn't work "we can't help you any further"

brave field
#

appdata is a fair suggestion

#

I think you avoid it though

#

appdata is on C:, you have game on F:

unreal iron
brave field
#

unless the game has also made an appdata folder on your F: somewhere, but then you have to find that, as %APPDATA% only directs to your USER account one in C:, in your Windows environment variables

brave field
#

@glad grove That PC only comes with a 500GB SSD, it'll very likely need more storage if you plan to do more than solely FH5 on it. The 8gb of ram it comes with isn't awful, but is really a ripoff at $1000. Having more active, heavy processes (like a game and multiple web browsers open at the same time) works better with more ram.
Adding these two solves it: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/mwrYcf/seagate-barracuda-computer-2-tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-st2000dm008

In a water cooling build does it water cool both gpu and cpu?

#

Cause im thinking i can cut off a couple hundred ££ by removing watercooling

you choose what it cools in a custom loop

if you're buying a preassembled CLC, its probably only designed to cool your CPU

#

specs?

jagged lark
brave field
#

That's using a preassembled CLC

#

it only cools the CPU

brave field

@jagged lark The 11700K's sole purpose for existing is overclocking

The Windows 11 one, through Nvidia's official installer on this site?

#

this might just be a Windows 11 issue then. Sorry I can't help, I don't use 11.

jovial tide
#

Hmmm

#

i reinstalled my actual gpu and driver, still had the error

#

i havent tried updating it

#

idk, we'll find out

brave field
#

Code 43 can show up if the GPU isn't physically installed entirely correctly, or if its defective as well

#

If this doesn't work, could you take and send a picture of the area where your GPU meets the PCIe slot?

jovial tide
#

yeah could be the problem as I didnt really build it

#

it said “no driver found”

brave field

what is saying this

#

the Nvidia installer or device manager?

#

#

if the installer, something is very wrong

jovial tide

idk

what would it say if it was the device manager?

brave field
#

Sorry for poor communication, I meant to ask

mmmh, that looks fine for this card

#

never mind the other picture I was thinking of, don't open this system up

#

return this to the people who built it for you

if they charged money for it, they owe you a working product

jovial tide
#

Ok

#

they owe me abt 2 grand back

#

that sucks man i was ready to play

brave field
#

$2000 for a 3060ti system?!

jovial tide
#

no

#

1,500 + tax and the other stuff added

#

so its a faulty graphics card?

brave field
#

$1500 😭
Its either a faulty GPU or poor installation, yeah

jovial tide
#

it was 1500 cuz of prebuilt, idk how to build pcs

civic cloud
brave field
#

@jovial tide don't open it or anything though, just explain the code 43 thing and the drivers not working, in case they try to revoke their return period and warranty. They should replace it without you having to provide a reason ideally.

oh, the expanding foam stuff!

jovial tide

#

now im just sitting here staring at the pc in disappointment

brave field
#

really can't fault him for that, if cyberpower has to shipped it that way, there are risks with components becoming dislodged when removing it, just like if it wasn't there at all

since its already been opened

call them first, I think. Someone should be able to guide you over the phone, and then it won't void warranty if its their employee (I hope)

brave field

If you're confident, you can try their guide, but I'd get on the phone with someone and get a return/replacement/technician
