shut down the pc, then spam press both delete and f2

#

while turning it on

unreal iron
#

No they don't work lol

#

I have before lol

jovial tide
#

if you see that bar loading, bios is not bricked

#

idk what's happening there and unfortunately neither do you. so I recommend bringing it to a repair shop

unreal iron
#

Right it just doesn't answer to f2 or f12

#

Oooooo

#

Now it EHINES

#

Whines

#

Something has become unseated

#

What would be causing this issue? Hard drive connection?

dense birch
#

ive had that same issue with a loose sata connection

#

also with it trying to boot off the wrong drive or a flash drive

unreal iron
#

Ok where's the sata

#

This has an ssd

dense birch
#

yeah most of my knowledge is dated back about ten years tbh
might be worth asking cookie if hes on

unreal iron
#

Ah if your knowledge is 10 it won't help me

#

My computer is 9 year old

#

Bruh

#

What's up with the fan

#

@dense birch this one you'd know lol

jovial tide
#

Dude Dude Alienware X51

unreal iron
#

M1

#

She's an original.

jovial tide
#

Just press F2 during that load

unreal iron
#

I cannot

jovial tide
#

Well I'm sorry then it's bricked PES_SadShrug

unreal iron
#

.

jovial tide
#

you have to either give it to a repair shop that knows how to handle Dell desktops or Dell itself

unreal iron
#

There's a saying

jovial tide
#

I doubt it has a flash button and I doubt it's USB flashable

unreal iron
#

When you replace everything in your car, is it still the same car?

jovial tide
#

Who said replace everything?

#

They have to replace the bios chip

unreal iron
#

The ssd, ram and cd drive, and power brick have all been replaced

jovial tide
#

And yes, when your board's Alienware and you're still using alienware psu it is

unreal iron
#

The only original parts now are the cpu and board lmao

#

And case

#

I think it's working but the fan is now loud and haven't checked

#

How do I make the fan quiet

jovial tide
#

Here's my last word here, it's either 1-your keyboard not working on boot 2-your pc is somehow bios bricked

unreal iron
#

Probably

#

She's 9

jovial tide
#

If it's bios bricked you have no choice, it needs the rom to get replaced

unreal iron
#

Wait the bios is that little battery

#

Isn't it?

jovial tide
#

There's no other way around it, they have to remove the bios rom, put another one in

#

Nope

unreal iron
#

Dang

jovial tide
#

It's not user replaceable, it has to be soldered

unreal iron
#

That battery is original too lmao

#

If it's in there

jovial tide
#

Well that also needs to be replaced

unreal iron
#

Kekw

#

the fan? I'd like to check but even if it is working that fan is loud

#

It.feels clear and spins, but the clicking says otherwise

#

Figured the fan out

#

Was looking at the wrong fan.

#

Ayyyyy

#

It boots now

slim bluff

jagged lark
#

On pc is it normal to have 6 discord processes in task manager?

#

This for example

dense birch
#

yes
just like how web browsers do

jagged lark
#

Also what does this mean?

#

If download windows is on no will it not download?

jovial tide
#

download windows downloads the latest possible image from microsoft and resets based on that 😉

#

it's usually a good option to say yes to if you have decent internet

How do I change my phone out of emergency calls only?

clean install is best install

jovial tide
#

in most cases doesn't make any difference

#

that option is clean install
the only case that's different is if you have bloatware partitions.

fervent granite
#

it's not a clean install if it's reinstalling yourself

jovial tide
#

☝️

#

also if you choose cloud you're not reinstalling yourself

#

you're getting the file online, putting it in a temporary partittion, using that to wipe the drive and install the new OS; which is a clean install

fervent granite
#

which is why you should always have an iso ready

#

When I install windows I clean the disk using diskpart, and then proceed with the install

#

which makes a huge difference

jovial tide
#

yeah I disagree, makes no difference for most computers.
unless you have Dell/HP with crappy recovery partitions that auto install bloat on top
and even then you can go to disk management, remove all of them with that or diskpart, then reset using cloud image.

fervent granite
#

tbh everyone should clean install for new pc's, they come with so much crap these days it's insane

jagged lark

How come the i9 11th gen isn't that performing according to google

Like the 11th gen is terrible for gaming but its not

The cost saving are big and matter alot on budget

You can easily save enough money to run extra 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd than 128 by building it your self

Or get a better mobo

I think prebuilts are just like a 1st experince one thing
You believe in it until you dont

jovial tide

why should I care if someone buys a prebuilt or not peepoShrug

latent drum
#

I mean if you genuinely care about someone you will really advice them not to go down this route

#

I once travelled to my friend shopped for parts with him and built it together
He did say its was way more fun than just buying it
Also when you learn how to build it it usually gives you a clue of what each part does for first experince users

jovial tide
#

if someone asks me for an advice, I give them, but thats a one time thing. i mean its none of my business what they do from that point on, even if its my brother for example

Unix, smelly! macOS is the last certified desktop Unix in big use.

Don't see any reason for upgrading to Windows 11

jovial tide

Well, less ram usage, pretty much most drivers are compatible, sounds are cool and eh, settings ui maybe

jovial tide
brave field
#

Did they change a lot in 11 over the past month? The taskbar (powered by Microsoft Edge Webview2™️) and its ram use was annoying in the insider releases

jovial tide
#

It's better now, Win11 the official release version uses much less ram compared to beta and dev versions

jovial tide
#

It's a bit weird though, like I installed it on my laptop and on boot it gives me microsoft teams errors every time, unfixable errors.

dense birch
#

i havent ran into any problems on my install, been trying it since this morning

#

it actually seems to perform better than windows 10 did all around on my potato pc

jovial tide
#

That's true, but you know what else is true?

#

A clean windows 10 install on a local account (instead of microsoft account) would perform the same and maybe even better

dense birch
#

Nah, did that first

jovial tide
#

what are your specs

dense birch

i5 2500, 8gb ddr3 ram, and an rx560

took a bit of fuckery to get it to install but it works

how does it perform after the years

brave field

old old hardware
This is crazy to think about. Still have 2 core2duo PCs in the home not replaced yet

dense birch
#

better than youd think for gaming tbh, just with some graphical sacrifices like antialiasing

jovial tide
#

I mean no offense PES_SadShrug I've had a similar CPU a 2320 or 2310 I believe

dense birch
#

ram limits me more than my cpu atm

jovial tide

With H67 (not sure maybe H61)

brave field
#

Do you play many DX12 or Vulkan games that don't have DX11 support?

jovial tide
#

back in the day I didn't know much about computers so I just went into a small PC shop (where I come from its different) and asked them for a suggestion and some ideas and bought it

#

the board didn't last me long, it was like 70% of its original state when I sold it, the capacitors were bloated as well.

cold elbow
cold elbow
#

Mine doesn't use a lot of ram cus i debloated it

jovial tide

That debloat custom OS is better for sure

cold elbow
#

Not a custom os

#

Just a scripts to remove them

jovial tide
#

Melon I'm having a problem sadge

cold elbow
#

A lot of that bloat is now integrated into windows 11

jovial tide
#

The teams that comes with win11 gives me error on every boot, reinstalling it, repairing it, uninstalling it doesn't work

#

It says incompatible image

brave field
#

Fix things the Windows way

cold elbow
#

Its probably a Registery issue

jovial tide
#

it says dir/dir/dir/microsoftteams_numnum\webview2loader.dll is either not designed to run on win or contains errors try reinstalling or contact admin

#

and says the same for bunch of other files in there giving me like 10 errors

cold elbow
#

Sounds like a messed up issue

#

Only way is to reach to it's roots

jovial tide
#

I'm gonna try to change to beta build

cold elbow
#

And windows doesn't like u to do so

brave field
#

Have you used any hypervisors recently? Virtualbox's VRDP streaming has a terrible audio stutter, do you recommend and tweaks or something different on a Debian host?

@jovial tide What did you run your W11 VM on?

brave field
#

License verification, how does it work?

jovial tide
#

It's all offline, checks, accepts done

brave field
#

Nothing like Adobe's use of 3-4 exes and 2 Windows services, ye?

cold elbow
#

I like how linus is making a video about using linux and he picked popOS as a start just like me

#

I hate installing an adobe software

jovial tide
#

I wasn't a fan of vmware tbh, but i had to use it for the workshop im working in, cuz it has the exact crucial feature i was looking for which virtualbox doesnt have, USB port management

#

VMWare Workstation is one of the easiest programs to work with in this aspect

#

It works flawlessly and effortlessly

brave field
#

hmm

#

sounds very nice

#

perhaps I should look into acquiring a license or three

jovial tide
#

how much does it cost do you know?

brave field
#

Can I completely murder those background daemons and it not affect the program? (and not re-enable itself)
Virtualbox's sound issues are a pain and most Linux-centered hypervisors are entire OSes or don't support RDP. If so, it sounds perfect

jovial tide
#

I think so

jovial tide
jovial tide
brave field
#

Its so inconsistent

#

when its good, its really good

#

and then you update to fix one visual issue and it introduces sound issues that don't get fixed for a year, and then that fix brings a different one

#

@jovial tide wait wait

#

How do you easily tell which daemons belong to what?

#

systemctl/service can list them, but is there a quick and easy "this daemon is linked to this package/file" somewhere?

jovial tide
#

well the names of the services pretty much tell where they belong mostly

#

besides, the manual of the software names all the modules and services it uses

brave field
#

In the event of malware pretending to be something useful, is there a tool to find the source, install date, and such?

jovial tide
#

well yes, if ure suspicious about a service/daemon activity, theres plenty of tools available to monitor it, cmds like 'lsof' , 'locate' or softwares like wireshark

#

If im suspecious abt some unknown service, I google it first of all, then I use the tools to monitor its activity

#

if ure talking abt vmware, I dont think u should be worried abt it as long as u keep it up to date

jovial tide

Its fair criticism, and I'm indifferent to Pop!_OS

ABC/SETL-style, like Python3?

#

It looks nice.

slim bluff
#

pretty much compiled python

#

although it gets no where near as much spotlight

brave field
#

Could you explain compilation to me?

slim bluff
#

compilation in general?

brave field
#

Python is compiled to .pyc bytecode, and then run by the PRE, ye?
Java is compiles to .class bytecode, and then run by the JVM, ye?
All the CLR languages to dotNet runtime stuff, yeah?
Why is Python considered interpreted and Java considered compiled? And why do the CLR languages have their own processes in htop/task manager, but the PRE and JVM take up that spot for those languages?

#

I get C/C++ being compiled to lower languages

slim bluff
#

python is not compiled, a pyc is just more of a cache iirc

jovial tide
#

My Node.js ass is going to sit back and watch

slim bluff
#

Java isn't technically compilation it's more transpiliation which is going from one lang to another (for example, TypeScript to JavaScript)

#

compilation is a specific type of of transpiliation where it is converted to machine code

#

However, Java gets close enough that it can be considered compilation

#

Python is interpreted (which means executed on the fly), so think of a program that reads a file and every time it see an 'a' it prints 'a' the console. This is an interpreted language we have just created, we read and input and every time we see an instruction we execute the operation that corresponds to that instruction

#

I'm trying my best but I am sure you could find a more in depth - and better - explanation online, I'm not really a language developer I just work with lower level programming languages so I just know what I need to so that I can get by.

brave field
#

The explanation helps a lot ❤️

#

Java is transpiled, unless its running on actual Java hardware, and .pyc and compile() are a scam!

slim bluff
#

yeah compile doesn't actual mean "compile"

#

you'll see tools online that convert python to a binary files, this isn't compiled python. It's just the python code bundled with a python interpreter in a file. Python can not be compiled

brave field
#

ah yeah, pyinstaller and py2exe stuff

slim bluff
#

yup

brave field
#

PyPy seems to stand out

#

Its no Nuitka/IronPython/Jython/Cython/Brython sort of thing, it claims to not transpile to anything else and somehow still be "compiled Python?"

slim bluff
#

PyPy takes advantage of what is know as JIT, Just in time compilation. Which when a function is called, initially it will be quite slow but it optimises the function (this is usually more beneficial for more computationally intensive functions that work with a lot of math)

#

example of numba I stole this from the numba home page

from numba import jit
import random

@jit(nopython=True)
def monte_carlo_pi(nsamples):
    acc = 0
    for i in range(nsamples):
        x = random.random()
        y = random.random()
        if (x ** 2 + y ** 2) < 1.0:
            acc += 1

The board has to be upgraded to put a better cpu on

Agreed, the RAM too.

And mobo now uses ddr4

If you're dead set on a replacement, I would recommend going for a R5-3600, a b450 or b550 motherboard, and 16gb ddr4 3600 mhz ram.

Mostly being done for one game and you'll still need a semi-working PC afterwards, and already have half the parts, and the storage, and the software? Just doesn't sound great value

Though, with how things are going now, something might happen with prices as the 12400 rolls out

What's the life expectancy of an SSD and a HDD

Looks like the motherboard supports two m.2 SSDs and 6 sata drives.

unreal iron

The one on the right

arctic yarrow

Yeah, you should be good.

unreal iron

It's not as big as my old HDD

#

It's only like a quarter of an inch thick

arctic yarrow
#

Yup, that's typical for a sata SSD

unreal iron
#

But the SSD and it is Probably somewhere between 4 and 6 years old

#

I'd replace it with a nice large HDD but Google says those only last Is 3 to 5 years

arctic yarrow
#

Have you rewritten to it a bunch of times? If not, you should still have quite a bit of life in it.

unreal iron
#

Rewritten how

#

It's only like 100 gigs or something. It fits windows 10 and 2 games

#

Like gtav and wot

#

Or wot and wows

#

Since I don't push it too hard other than those games that's the only 3 I've put on it kekw

arctic yarrow
#

OK, so you haven't deleted and installed a new game that often. You should be golden.

Probably

#

The external is uhhh an ssd I'm pretty sure. It's like a half inch thick

#

1 terabyte?

#

I just launch wot and wows off that external

arctic yarrow

Mathematically, that's like 24 rewrites on the same NAND flash. IIRC most SSDs from 2015ish is rated for 3-5000 rewrites.

Consumer SSD pioneer OCZ Technologies has officially started the process of filing for bankruptcy. In a statement published this afternoon on Marketwatch, the company announced that this past Monday, November 25, its depository accounts were turned over to the control of Hercules Technology Growth Capital due to OCZ's failure to comply with the conditions of a loan from Hercules. Per the loan agreement's terms, OCZ has begun the bankruptcy process—with the goal of dissolution, not restructuring.

#

2013

#

Either this drive is older than I thought or I bought a ssd from a dead company

arctic yarrow

OCZ still made SSDs until the brand was dissolved and all their assets merged with Kioxia.

arctic yarrow

arctic yarrow

unreal iron

The internal is like 500gb

#

It only holds 2 games in addition to its own OS

#

Like thas tiny

#

The externL is like 1 to 3 tb

arctic yarrow
#

Probably a sata ssd inside with a sata to usb adapter, or (shudders) a usb controller direclty on the drive.

#

Or wait, usually a larger external drive is a hard disk drive

#

not a SSD

unreal iron
#

Can I have a shop turn that external into an internal?

#

#

This is it

arctic yarrow
#

Yeah, or you can do it yourself. They're usually not too difficult to pull open.

unreal iron
#

UT what about the connectors

arctic yarrow
#

I'm checking it right now to see if it's a USB controller directly, or a SATA to USB adapter inside.

unreal iron
#

Wait this is an hdd too

#

It's so light though!

arctic yarrow
#

nvm, this HDD has one of those stupid USB logic boards.

#

Why WD has a hard-on for usb logic boards? I don't know.

#

But you can't make it internal.

unreal iron
#

I hear WD is one of the better companies in general but idk what puts them above the others

arctic yarrow

WD is considered reliable because they're one of the more common brands.

#

In terms of failure rate however, they're usually average or slightly worse.

So I took an exam for assembly language, and one of the questions was to compare R3 to R4 and place a value in R0 depending on if R3 was greater, less than, or equal to R0. Here's the code I typed for that answer:

0101 000 000 1 00000 ;R0 <- 0
1001 100 100 111111 ;R4 <- NOT R4
0001 100 100 1 00001 ;R4 <- R4 + 1
0000 010 000000010 ;BRz x3006
0000 001 000000010 ;BRp x3007
0001 000 000 1 11111 ;R0 <- R0 - 1
1111 0000 0010 0101 ;TRAP x25
0001 000 000 1 00001 ;R0 <- R0 + 1
1111 0000 0010 0101 ;TRAP x25```
Can you guys guess what mistake I made?

VMWare doesn't seem to have a native remote display like Virtualbox does and recommends you host the rdp session from inside the VM, Virtualbox's has broken audio, xrdp inside the VM doesn't transfer audio, Parsec can't host on Linux!

unreal iron
#

Wait @arctic yarrow does that mobo have wifi or no

#

The one int he build I had

#

I have a bookmark for a wifi card and remember that being an issue

arctic yarrow
#

#

@unreal iron That motherboard doesn't have wifi. Make sure you're buying a pcie x1 wifi card or USB adapter.

unreal iron
#

This is what cookie recommended last time

brave field
#

Intel AX200-based, yes!

#

What are your thoughts, Bartor? I still need to research newer networking stuff but AX200-based cards are just so, so, so low-priced for dualband and BT and Wifi6

arctic yarrow
#

I don't know too much about wifi cards tbh, never really played with them.

unreal iron
#

Based on the age of that zco and the fact I'm running games off an external hdd, should I get a bigger internal drive or no

arctic yarrow
#

I'm the kinda guy who solders two CAT5 cables together so I can connect my desktop in my bedroom.

unreal iron
#

Can I use Flash SD cards as memory for this pc and call it good

#

Anything n
To save money ig

brave field
#

You can use SD cards as storage but not memory
Most SD cards are horrendously slow and more expensive than faster options for $/GB

unreal iron
#

I have a like 128 I'm not using

brave field
#

throw videos or music and word documents on it, but nothing that needs relatively-fast IO, like a game

#

I think the Barracuda 2TB is a good fit, since you already have a boot SSD and the 2TB is better $/GB than anything smaller

arctic yarrow
unreal iron
#

I dont have money to be wrong

brave field
#

standard mobo supports standard wifi card, yes

#

price increased to $40?! Time to find a different model

#

and

#

unless you buy from Newegg, you'll have a decent return window, and you'll be convered in the event of some weird software-side incompatibility, don't worry

unreal iron
#

That's WITH the Seagate and wifi card

unreal iron
#

That looks smaller

arctic yarrow
#

And yes, both of those wifi cards will work.

brave field
#

That lower-priced one works

#

sucks that its not an AX200

unreal iron
#

Ok so final cost is 453

brave field
#

but AX200's aren't worth double the price

unreal iron
#

I got the 4 year protection plan on the wifi card. There's no way that card will survive 4 years keke

brave field
#

huh?

#

do not!

#

Wifi cards last 15 years!

unreal iron
#

It's $4

brave field
#

yeah

#

too high

arctic yarrow
#

Most protection plans are ass.

brave field
#

They often end up fighting you 3 years in, in the event something does happen

unreal iron
#

I've heard getting really long ones are great for getting free replacements because Amazon always sends out garbage that doesn't live as long as the plan

arctic yarrow
#

Well, that's stuff amazon manufactures or contracts out for manufacturing.

#

AFAIK, MSI doesn't make amazon basics shit.

unreal iron
#

Ok so it's now 449

#

Without that

#

Whats the form factor of this thing? Mid atx?

arctic yarrow
brave field
#

micro ATX/mATX

unreal iron
#

I k ow you said my case is way too bug

brave field

unreal iron
#

arctic yarrow
#

oh mb

brave field
#

arctic yarrow
#

Micro atx is the 4 slot shit, mid atx is larger

unreal iron
#

So I can buy a square case that's about the size as the alienware and even that weird wifi card will fit?

arctic yarrow
#

Are you using the same case or buying a different one?

#

If you're gonna be saving money, use your current case.

unreal iron
#

I have a Full atx to put it in

brave field
#

Yes, provided the case has at least 3 spaces for PCIe slots

#

your 1060 will likely take up two, the wifi card one

unreal iron
#

It's overkill but that's what I have lol

arctic yarrow
#

Yeah, that should work. The only issue is it will look a little empty, but that's an asthetic issue.

unreal iron
#

The alternative case is an alienware x51 but that's all form fitted to the Andromeda parts with a sister board

#

Cookie agrees its an ass setup

brave field

Virtualbox is plenty usable, doesn't have the nasty background services VMWare has, and isn't tied to the OS like hyper-v is (also hyperv kills using any other virtualization software)

I wanted to like it

fervent granite

brave field

it has Windows-10-on-a-5400rpm-hard-drive performance, and editing the config involves editing an undocumented text file

bad look for hyperv since it uses it, but I know that's unfair criticism to hyperv

fervent granite

Does ytdl work with Twitch?
It works. Use youtube-dl or ytdl-p

#

You can specify the quality when you download, and resume partial downloads

lost fossil
#

but will it work if the video is blocked worldwide due to copyright hmmm

strong saffron
#

Probably not if it's blocked worldwide tomate But if it's just blocked where you live, you can have yt-dl work through a VPN/Tor

lost fossil
#

it's my own stream that i can view just fine but it's blocked worldwide so noone other than me can see it so i need to download it in order to remove the blocking song

strong saffron
#

you can login to yt-dl with your twitch credentials i think

lost fossil
#

it's a youtube stream tho hmmm

#

can i login in yt-dlp? hmmm

i have a question.

#

a teacher of mine asked me if i could look for drones for his new drone course, he told me he wanted atleast 2 like good instructor drones, and a few drones for beginners, his budget is 5k for everything and it needs to have a camera and preferably the ability to attach sensors to it. i was wondering if anyone has experience with drones, and could give me recommendations, i've already looked and found some potential, but if you have a recommendation ill surely look into it.

If i buy crypto for the set price $100=0.0xx which its real value is yyyy.yy how much do i make?

cold elbow
#

Crypto is a scam

#

Dont bother

brave field
#

Hard disagree, there have been plenty of legitimate and helpful uses over the past 10 years

#

this is an awful time to get into it if trying to use it as an investment, though

jagged lark
#

This for example

#

Do i make the $100 back or how much 0.0015 is worth?

brave field
#

0.0015 BTC is just under $97 USD, strangely low fees
You don't make anything yet, and BTC is at its high, you're infinitely more likely to lose money than gain anything

#

absolutely would not purchase $100 in BTC through moonpay (or any BTC at all)

jagged lark
#

Only got the crypto app cus I thought it was free OF from a streamers bio dont ask why

brave field
#

jagged lark
#

#

Eh back to tryna do paid carries then

Crypto is the official currency for illegal or sketchy acts

With most cryptocurrency transactions being easier to trace than physical cash, whyso?

Outside of Monero

jovial tide

dont compare crypto with a knife its actually a ninja sword OkayChamp

#

i can blame the ninja sword

#

for its designed for malicious purposes

arctic yarrow
#

I'll tell you one thing, I wouldn't want to buy illegal shit with crypto. My transaction could easily be traced to my wallet, and it would be a simple matter of finding out who owns that wallet.

#

That's the thing with transactions over the blockchain, that info never goes away.

#

Fun fact, most cryptocurrency crimes are scams.

brave field
#

Illegal transactions on a network where all your transactions are public and easily traced in a world where you almost always have to sign up for an exchange or conversion service that often requires tax info/SSN or equivalent... right

Not saying it doesn't happen, but the good projects far outnumber the issues caused by the last few people in... Switzerland, the last place where you can really exchange without KYC law

strong saffron
#

The existence of exchanges ruined crypto for me smh. so much for decentralised anonymous payment. It's essentially an investment good now

brave field
#

@strong saffron same, infuriating
"Its decentralized, you just have to rely on x or y big company and provide enough personal info to open a bank account to use it!"
There are groups still pushing to mandate cryptocurrencies in Western society but all the governments already have complete control

jovial tide
#

Alright guys, fine, you say what is being done with crypto rn is also being done with physical money too,(or used to be done idk) right?
what about the side effects of crypto on environment and electronic parts prices?FeelsThinkingMan who's the winner of this financial tussle at the end of the day? me or you? hah! i dont think so

brave field
#

side effects on the environment is fair

#

though bitcoin ASICs alone is some 70%+ of that. Altcoins that suck for investments but have good projects behind them are verified in their own ways, good coins use proof of stake with delegation, and not all proof of work algos are designed to be as difficult as possible

For electronic part prices, there's still little reliable sources behind cryptocurrency being the main issue, with there being 0 sources at all from 2010-2017.

arctic yarrow
#

One of the reasons why a lot of cryptos are moving towards proof of stake instead of proof of work.

#

Power consumption dramatically decreases with proof of stake.

#

But... you can't traditionally mine it at that point.

jovial tide
# brave field side effects on the environment is fair

well, personally, thats the major reason I never supported crypto since it became a thing, I've not traded or mined a single dollar although i could do that.
the environment is the ship we're all on board, if it sinks we all sink together.

brave field
#

trying to understand a bit better, are you avoiding all cryptocurrencies for environment issues caused by a few?

jovial tide
#

some because of the env. ,some because I dont like the idea of their existence OkayChamp

brave field
#

BTC power use is horrendous right now, everyone is racing to see what will happen to it when the last 2 million are done being mined, and most of its ASICs are in the 3000W range now. Super fair to be against that.

arctic yarrow
#

There's a few other cryptos like that, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.

brave field
#

Nano, Ripple
Monero and Ethereum are both proof of work and still are immensely less power hungry than any of the SHA-256 currencies

arctic yarrow
#

However, it's gonna move to Proof of Stake around Q2 2022

#

Actually, ETH 2.0 is already here as a sorta "Beta" and it's Proof of stake.

#

5% APY

brave field
#

I have no faith in ETH truly going proof of stake

#

They've met every goal announced but proof of stake always gets pushed back every year

arctic yarrow
#

Maybe the smart move for me is to mine ETH rn and dump it into ETH 2.0

#

You could, but it would only really be viable for that general area. Impedance would waste a ton of power if you move it too far away.

brave field
#

Our governments and celebrities can order enough solar panels and wind turbines to power entire small countries in less than 5 minutes but they don't. Manufacturers want profit, buying land sucks, batteries are expensive, and the consumer wants to pinch every penny possible

strong saffron
#

You'd need a ton of land to pull that off probably

arctic yarrow
#

Plus, even when there's plenty of sun and wind, it's still intermittent.

#

The electrical grid requires a constant source of power.

#

One of the reasons why politicians should shed their fear of nuclear and allow the construction of more reactors. It's way more environmentally friendly than coal, very power compact, and not intermittent unlike wind and solar.

#

Hydro wouldn't be a bad thing either.

strong saffron
#

What about the amount of power? I live < 10 degrees from the equator and solar isn't that popular here apart from residential applications

brave field
#

The whole world really should find a way to adopt solar more
I vote for photovoltaic sidewalks

arctic yarrow
#

Yes, solar and wind can be used for supplemental power, but you need a constant power source to support the grid.

jovial tide
#

on earth surface? I dont think thats viable(huge amounts of money required) who will risk that amount of money for volatile currency like btc? Satoshi Nakamoto? OkayChamp
but i think it could be viable if they design huge miner satellites who always keep their face towards the sun somehow( no downtime for the batteries)
but this is one is also more resource/money hungry than on earth's surface

brave field
#

Non-residential transportation and industrial uses are a nice 85% of fossil fuel use in the US, for example
As someone who knows nothing about the field, update factory machines and trains, then move to houses and deal with 4000W/hr heating and air conditioning, and then push cars with regenerative braking

jovial tide
brave field
#

shouldn't wait for fossil fuels to not exist when we have enough alternatives to power the world 🙁

jovial tide
#

but why companies are not doing all they can for this matter right now, I really dont know, maybe they wanna pass the burden to future generations LULW

#

im not saying they are not doing anything atall, but its really not enough
