They also both keep clocks at highest possible

lost fossil
#

no, there are power saver (whatever), balanced and high performance

fervent granite
#

so just go into their power prefs and see what their values are

jovial tide
#

But I don't know the difference between

lost fossil
#

ultimate is not default

fervent granite
#

it's this thing

lost fossil
#

last time i checked, anyway

jovial tide
#

Balanced your cpu goes like 2.5 2.9 3.6 5

#

Those two constant max clock

#

ultimate is full throttle ig, turns off every sort of power saving across the system

#

But what about high performance

#

@jovial tide you sure this isnt the case? ultimate and High performance could be actually the same thing FeelsThinkingMan

#

Well there are two different profiles made for Windows high performance and ultimate performance

#

win 10?

#

Yep

#

googled about it and found interesting info, didn't know such a profile exists:

#

So it came enabled for me

#

I guess it depends on the cpu and motherboard

#

came enabled by default? sounds abit too harsh on the components to me tho

#

No I mean I had it in my power profiles

#

hmm

The Z690 DDR4 cost 200$ at cheapest

Also K series getting more additional benifits over normal

Intel isnt joking here
The i7 12700kf costs 380$

at the end AMD is still cheaper

Looking at hwinfo, temps are normal...that's really strange

#

Would 32 gb of ddr3 ram be faster than 16 gb of ddr4 ram?

brave field
#

speed depends on the timings and mhz

#

but 32gb will do better for a workload that uses more than 16gb and is hurt by use of a pagefile
capacity>speed when the capacity is actively in use

#

So I know this is non-gta, but to be fair this isn't entirely GTA related and I feel like is the only place anyone would appreciate this:
I'm a pc player, I've been toying with ways to automatically block some of the more 'popular' gtao bot spammers

for e.x:
scapi.rockstargames.c0m/search/user?searchTerm=DARKCOIN
returning a list of users via name, then you can loop though their r* ids and:
scapi.rockstargames.c0m/friends/blockPlayer?rockstarId={}

On the side I'm doing a lot with image recognition and OCR, and in theory it's possible to continue grabbing these names and automatically block them passively as I play

brave field
#

ooh

#

What software are you using for it?

peak locust
#

Python currently

brave field
#

With something like OpenCV and Pillow?

#

Something faster?

peak locust
#

Currently using Tesseract for OCR, but I'd love suggestions

brave field
#

Tesseract looks far better suited than stitching the other two together, thanks 👀

peak locust
#

Haha, either way it's a Frankenstein, on the bright side the worst thing that could happen is I block some random dude with a weird name, so I'm not all that worried about it 😅

jovial tide
#

meanwhile, fabricating a bluetooth speaker out of junk parts found in trash OkayChamp

brave field
#

Does Rockstar's ToS let you automate that stuff without risking a ban? They seem like they'd be pretty hostile to it, to me

peak locust
#

you know, that's a great question, one that I should definitely currently know the answer to

#

Tis a shame we have to worry about whether we can create a solution to a problem Rockstar won't/hasn't fixed without breaking tos.

peak locust
jovial tide
# peak locust That's cool, what all do you got there? It's a bit blurry

sorry abt the low quality pic, the reason is complicated to explain 😆 its nothing special, its a bluetooth speaker made out of an amplifier which i found in the trash when I was coming back home the other day (yea, I pick whatever seems worthy off the trash xD) , the blutooth module belongs to a broken wireless headset which i salvaged, and for the power im using the 12v of my testing power supply, I had to use a cell for the module because the high frequency ripple of that cheap psu interfered the output making static noise.

#

I think i have to make a separate filter for the whole unit to reduce the ripple so that i can use the 3.3v of the psu for the module too, removing the cell

peak locust
#

That's so neat!

Imagine windows update installing something behind your games with no worries

cold elbow
#

Do u think an 8/16 cpu would care anyways?

Probably not if they optimize the scheduler

#

cold elbow
#

Intel always been aiming at the laptops market

#

And imo they will succeed

#

As for high performance computers i would rather have more performance cores

jovial tide
#

Man laptops have come a long way

#

Like that Alienware I bought for 2100 Canadian (1700USD) performed like a 11600k + 3060Ti (11800H + 3070notebook)

#

Temps were shit, but you could find something similar from another brand without crappy temps or bring it to someone to professionally liquid metal it.

cold elbow
#

I explained this before

#

If u want to get the performance of the parts u bought on a laptop u need to put a huge cooling solution there which does not make it a laptop anymore

#

And i said "3080 on a laptop is a bad purchase"

civic cloud
#

buy a laptop with a 3080, rip the 3080 out and put it in your actual pc

#

cheaper than buying a 3080

#

🤝

jovial tide
#

@cold elbow times changed

#

right now many not so beefy laptops can handle their high end chips well and will have 75-80 degrees on max load. @civic cloud maybe buy a NUC type device those are cool.

civic cloud
#

it was a joke

#

im not buying shit

#

i got my pc

#

which is running fine beside some weird noises 🤝

jovial tide
#

I bet those noises are from wires scratching the case from inside

civic cloud
#

No i checked the wires

#

And then the noise would be constant

#

But it's random for a few seconds

jovial tide
#

Send some PC picks

#

With all the wiring

#

Also does it happen with case doors open?

civic cloud
#

Yes

#

I had the pc running without all panels and it still happened

jovial tide
#

Do you have wires held too close to the board or the psu?

#

Where does it come from? Where's the sound near?

civic cloud
#

Wdym too close to the board?

#

Yeah I'm not sure where it's coming from, I'd say the front

#

I'm currently checking the fans, got 6 out of 9 so far, but i have to wait for the noise

#

So it takes a while

jovial tide
#

Like if you have for example some RGB connectors close to board they might make a sound when they come in contact with the board

civic cloud
#

There's exactly 3 fan/RGB headers plugged in and the cables don't touch the board

jovial tide
#

Like you've cable managed and those cables & connectors are close to the board they might make sounds

civic cloud
#

But how would they make a sound randomly only for a few seconds🤨

jovial tide
#

Well disconnect the front fans see if it still happens

#

It's vibrations it happens when they hit a certain frequency

#

Then something moves and comes in contact with something else to make another sound

civic cloud
#

Intense waiting for the noise again

latent drum
#

imo
any device that have battery sucks until we get rid of our 200 year old battery tech

sour marsh
#

hmmm just saw the Alder lake and DDR5 sticks

#

interesting

civic cloud
#

I took the front Panel off and now it straight up doesn't make the noise anymore

#

This makes NO sense whatsoever

jovial tide
#

Well it makes sense to me

#

Put some oil in those fans then cable manage them and you'll have the noise disappear

civic cloud
#

Boi

#

There's no way to cable manage the fans more

#

ALSO

#

It's the lowest fan

#

When i stop it the rattling stops

jovial tide
#

Reassemble it

#

It's like having an extra screw when you assembled a car engine, you're German I'm sure you'll figure it out

civic cloud
#

Reassemble...the fan? 🤨

jovial tide
#

The whole front side panel

civic cloud
#

Wat

#

It's one piece

jovial tide
#

It looks like 3 separate fans to me

civic cloud
#

Why would I reassemble the whole thing if it's just one fan making the noise

#

I'm so confused

jovial tide
#

You'll never know if you don't reassemble

civic cloud
#

Dude

#

If i stop the fan

#

And the noise stops

#

And it doesn't stop when i stop the other fans

#

It has to be that one fan

jovial tide
#

Well then change that one fan

#

Or open it up oil it

ebon wigeon

Nobody happens to want like a mint condition gt710 for cheap do they

GT710? not really people buy 1030 nowadays

arctic yarrow
jovial tide

A fanless 1030 performs much better at the same price of something like that

arctic yarrow
#

Hell, I've got a few lying around in a dusty box somewhere.

ebon wigeon
#

Yeah i upgraded to a 1030 aero , so now ive got a 710 laying around

jovial tide
#

Have it for diagnostics

#

Trust me it's useful; people all have CPUs with no integrated GPU so when the GPU fails they have no way of diagnosing

#

Having a cheap GPU to test with around helps

ebon wigeon
#

True , Just trying to get rid of it lmao

#

My 1030 is working fine , and im not going to need the 710 in the future

jovial tide
#

Well if you're in US you can just list it for very cheap or free on ebay

ebon wigeon
#

Yeah , Although i just had a brainwave

jovial tide
#

Or maybe make a small PC with it and use that as a router or storage server

ebon wigeon
#

yeah , thats what i was thinking

#

i have a super old dusty pc laying around

jovial tide
#

That super old dusty isn't reliable enough

ebon wigeon

with like 2gb of ram and integrated graphics

jovial tide
#

But the case can be useful

ebon wigeon
#

i might just throw it in there for no reason lmao

arctic yarrow
#

If you're happy with your router, use it for a storage server. If not, install pfsense.

jovial tide
#

PFSense is a good idea yeah

ebon wigeon
#

Whats that?

arctic yarrow

Think of it as an operating system to use your computer as a router.

jovial tide

I personally prefer Kerio (you've not heard of)

ebon wigeon
#

Oh Okay. might look into it

jovial tide
#

It's gonna need some reliable hardware or it'll slow you down.

brave field
#

710 is a decent GPU for VMs if the second PC idea falls through

jovial tide
#

Yeah! brilliant idea, you can use it as dedicated GPU for VMs

brave field
#

can't decode video, but your CPU won't have to try to produce graphics if the 710 does all the work

ebon wigeon
#

Fair point! Also just asking. anybody selling a GPU better than a 1030 for a reasonable price?

#

i cant find any , anywhere

jovial tide
#

In this server any kind of money trading is prohibited

arctic yarrow
ebon wigeon

jovial tide

jovial tide

That's a good price but does it ship to UK?

ebon wigeon
arctic yarrow

jovial tide

Like I bought Newegg's ABS (a partner company) 10400F + 3060Ti for like 1600USD

#

1375 before tax usd which is very good deal (1000 pounds)
So from that moment onwards, I just tell people to buy good prebuilts instead of overspending on GPU

ebon wigeon

The newest slim usb is called USB-c which is a multi purpose port that can be used for many things

ebon wigeon
#

oh for fuck sake lmao , i have a draw full of old Android chargers

#

and i dont own one of them new ones

arctic yarrow
ebon wigeon
#

Yeah i think so

jovial tide
#

Charging, data transfer at fastest rates, thunderbolt transfers on supported boards, displayport through USB-c on supported boards

arctic yarrow
#

Suddenly my Note 5 feels really old.

cold elbow
#

@ebon wigeon u can get a small adapter for them

ebon wigeon
ebon wigeon
jovial tide
#

So that's the thing Apple uses its own thunderbolt design

#

Which is compatible with USB-c but not the other way around

#

Europe just said stop it apple f off, we're standardidizing xD

ebon wigeon
#

Europe puttin their foot down XD

cold elbow
#

Then apple be like

#

Mag safe

jovial tide
#

Apple's the worst company ever, they remind me of buildapc community a little bit

cold elbow
#

And create more waste

jovial tide
#

Take what we say or die
We are nothing but and the absolute truth and only the only truth

#

Sorry I'm slipping off here kek

cold elbow
#

U always do

jovial tide
#

How is it going btw Ms Melon

cold elbow
#

It's alright, saw a huge crash happening infront of me today

#

Managed to stop and someone hit my car from the back harold

jovial tide
#

Are you in Turkey still?

cold elbow
#

Ye

jovial tide
#

That Middle Eastern driving Facepalm

cold elbow
#

I mean tbh they drive here better than in nyc

#

But this guy somehow lost control

#

Maybe something wrong happened to his car

jovial tide
#

Is it heavily damaged your car?

#

Getting hit from the back brings bad memories to me

cold elbow
#

No mine is fine

#

Just a small scratch

jovial tide
#

Oh thanks goodness

cold elbow
#

This is why u should always maintain a safe distance

jovial tide
#

Yep but here I come from people usually don't unless they are in big highways

cold elbow
#

Yeah that's the cause of a lot of accidents

jovial tide
#

Yeah but it's more exciting Pepega

#

Like if you go to Tehran everyone's style is something like race driving, I've seen something similar in India.

latent drum
#

wait

#

RX580/480 is like 6 years old card

#

bruh

#

ok so

#

how much this shit gonna last

jovial tide
#

What's happening?

latent drum
#

how much this GPU crisis gonna last

jovial tide
#

Forever

latent drum
#

i just realized that

jovial tide
#

Covid + mining + increasing crypto numbers

latent drum
#

1060 is 5.5 years

jovial tide
#

Buying at MSRP is like a dream for the most part

#

In Canada you can camp bestbuy but eh, lame; stand 8 hours in front of it just to get one at MSRP

latent drum
#

i would camp the hell gate

jovial tide
#

Well idk how old are you but a day's work is worth a lot of money

latent drum
#

"weak" end

jovial tide
#

Or maybe even 2 days work cause you'll be tired af

#

Last bestbuy sell in Canada was 2 days ago

#

You gotta stand hours before they give you tickets and that ticket guarantees you a GPU buy if they have any left

#

Next one's in a month

latent drum
#

okay then
6000 gallons of black coffeee

#

water fasting

jovial tide
#

Well no maybe just buy a good prebuilt

#

You in US?

latent drum
#

sadly no
i live far away

#

like 3 or 4 planets

jovial tide
#

Where do you live? country

latent drum
#

i live in north ceres

brave field
#

even if shortage isn't a problem, Nvidia and AMD learned from their mistake after making the 1060 and 580

#

A sub-$200 GPU with performance like that won't be a thing for at least 5 years

cold elbow
#

Just wait for intel harold

brave field
#

They undercut AMD in the CPU market, their iGPUs can compete with AMD's dGPUs in OpenGL workloads on Windows, and are more stable than Nvidia's on Linux. Waiting for Intel is really all that's left other than being scammed.

jovial tide
#

Yeah AMD's done for a couple of years

#

Their upper hand's gone

#

This guy with weird name can go find a gpu and cpu in his narnia place

latent drum
#

AMD CPUs are competitive
they wont have anything competitive until Zen 4 but they are still here

#

but i never saw AMD gpus as competition really

#

iam sorry but they fucking suck

jovial tide
#

You've never seen a XTXH 6900xt then

#

Newegg's selling XFX limited black for 1700 clocked at 2500

latent drum
#

does it fix the drivers?

jovial tide
#

That's a non issue really

latent drum
#

does it have futures?

brave field
#

It comes with a free install of Arch, so yes!

latent drum
#

can it run AI as fast as cuda ?

jovial tide
#

Are you an AI scientist?

latent drum
#

does it have DLSS ?

jovial tide
#

Or in your narnia do you use GPUs to control something?

latent drum
#
  • most things a normal human can do with AI
jovial tide
#

6900xt can upscale with its radeon drivers

cold elbow
#

@latent drum < now im certain that hes anti-AMD
what amd did to you? uwu

latent drum
#

iam sure Intel have the future set to compete with Nvidia and not AMD

jovial tide
#

it doesn't have DLSS but it's pretty good

#

Like go buy a 1700$ card for this much juice from Nvidia

brave field
#

Seems you have to exclusively play AAA games for AMD GPUs to be worthwhile

latent drum
#

Intel was the first with a graphics Ray tracing core technology
was the first behind video game upscaling patents
have better decoder and encoder than both nvidia and AMD

#

they surely have the future sets to compete
and their upscale than works on every card is AI powered like nvidia but trained even better
not just a better than monitor upscaler

#

while intel CPUs team is garbage , no one can say the same about their GPU one

jovial tide
#

So many words so little meaning

#

I like Linux therefore I throw all of that to trash and prefer AMD

#

The same "drivers bruh" logic applies here

latent drum
#

intel have good linux drivers?

jovial tide
#

AMD vs Nvidia; Intel's not in the market yet

cold elbow
#

I see a lot of people complain about and drivers when i never had any issues

latent drum
#

because its a luck game

cold elbow
#

When i used to get amd drivers update i usually get more performance

jovial tide
#

It probably has to do with how bad lower end cards are

#

Like comparing my friend's 6900xt phantom gaming d to this xfx limited black one

cold elbow
#

And i loved their baked in features like overclocking without the need for a software

jovial tide
#

AsRock one was absolute dogshit

cold elbow
#

And per game overclocking

latent drum
#

its more like gambling and its been like 8 years and still the same problem
2 people , can buy the same cards at the same time from the same shelfs and have 2 complete 2 different problem or one of them is bug free
like its 6000 series already

cold elbow
#

They were the first to implement the save replay feature

jovial tide
#

Every GPU is gambling

#

You can get nvidia card one comes with samsung memory the other hynix

latent drum
#

not on driver level

cold elbow
#

And they still offer more flexibility with overclocking
Not hard locked like invidia

jovial tide
#

@cold elbow + morepowertool

latent drum
#

thats why people type on fixed X problem "Some" XXXX cards

cold elbow
#

also for years free sync technology was a lot cheaper

latent drum
#

nvidia is hardlocked?

jovial tide
#

yeah!

latent drum
#

how

jovial tide
#

go increase your power and voltage in an nvidia card

cold elbow
#

Yeah u can't play with voltage

#

U need a shunt mod

latent drum
#

you can?

jovial tide
#

without having a brain cancer or horrible headache

cold elbow
#

I remember getting 20% more performance by overclocking a 6870 back then

jovial tide
#

God I wish I had more money so I could tell you to try

#

On my 3060Ti Ventus 2x LHR

#

That would be nice to see xd

latent drum
cold elbow
#

So what

#

Was it actual performance gain

latent drum
#

yes

jovial tide
#

60ms latency probably

#

😄

cold elbow
#

Memory oc on 1xxx gen was terrible

jovial tide
#

Any sort of real performance needs some bios tuning which is a pain in Nvidia cards

#

Amd? MorePowerTool easy life

#

XTXH? it'll get a ton of power by itself with great components unlocked up to 4 GHz
Go find that in an Nvidia card

latent drum
#

i dont remember nvidia replay giving me green screens
or overclocking monitor being locked
or hardware acceleration barely even working

cold elbow
jovial tide
#

What's a shunt mod

cold elbow
#

U basically short some components in the board

#

Because these components lock the power draw

jovial tide
#

oh like actual hardware modifying

cold elbow
#

Yes

jovial tide
#

That's some advanced shit

#

@brave field Cookie have you ever modified the GPU board itself to overclock it?

brave field
#

not to overclock, sounds gross

latent drum
#

like i remember duct taping some intel CPUs pin contact to overclocking them

jovial tide
#

People modify the board to get more voltage and power out of them

cold elbow
#

Nvidia made it even more complicated by instead of putting one resistor they are using like 5 now
So u need to do 5 shorts now lol

jovial tide
#

Melon calls shunt mods

cold elbow
#

It's like... U have the 6 pins connectors that provide 12 volts to the core... U will have them put these limiters on each cable or lane

#

I'm not very experienced with this topic but I know it exists and gives good results

#

Also risky

latent drum
#

i my self dont like overclocking vram

#

shit is brittle

#

normal ram will cry for 6 seconds then everything is okay

#

vram when something small they dont like

#

more like this

cold elbow
#

I remember when people used to buy vega 56 and flash it with vega 64 bios

latent drum
#

thats pretty common with AMD cards

cold elbow
#

And runs perfectly fine lol

#

Think it also happened with 5700

latent drum
#

people flashing the 480 with the 580 bios
there was also some 580 cards advertised as 4gb while they had 8

#

bios flash unlocked full 8

cold elbow
#

Yeah

latent drum
#

remember also AMD pulling a scum bag and selling the 460 locked with less cores , bios fixed the issue

cold elbow
#

I remember buying a 4gb card to realize it's actually 3.5

#

Guess which card is it

brave field
#

"3.5gb" is offensive to Jensen Huang

#

It makes him feel better if you call the last .5gb on the 970 "L5 cache"

latent drum
#

i dont remember , i never had any experience with 900 series

cold elbow
#

Nvidia gtx970

#

Hated that pos

#

Nvidia even locked the cuda cores

#

Didn't like to overclock properly

latent drum
#

Looking at AMD fury , their cards did really improve , its just their cards

#

AMD gpus feels like vanilla GPUs

cold elbow
#

Fury came with HBM

#

how they shot themselves in the foot for using expensive memory

kindred temple
#

3090Ti with HBM2 pls :okayge:

latent drum
kindred temple
#

The only way to justify fucking 2000$ on that thing

cold elbow
#

Hbm was not only expensive
It was like 4gb on the nano that cost 500$ or something lol

latent drum
#

isnt like

#

HBM4 out?

cold elbow
#

Idk

kindred temple
cold elbow
#

It's probably still expensive

latent drum
#

HBM3*

#

i think it was much cheaper than HBM2

cold elbow
#

And to cut to the chasein short AMD never actually cared about their gpu department especially for consumers

latent drum
#

i dont think HBM is needed on AMD cards

#

they install garbage grade performance memory on their 6000 series and its working really great with big cache

cold elbow
#

They have sony, Microsoft and apple as customers

#

And server section

latent drum
#

shows that cache can replace fast memory

cold elbow
latent drum
#

on their next gen they are doubling everything right?

#

doubling cache , cores , raytracing cores , everything except vram

#

also leaks shows that both AMD and nvidia cards will have nuclear grade levels of TDP

cold elbow
#

Probably not
Amd have limited amount of silicon from TSMC
they will prefer it to go to their consistent income which are their customers like sony and Microsoft

latent drum
#

I think they will

#

it will be lame if we got RDNA2 with faster raytracing bruhbob

cold elbow
#

Just a matter of time for the directX implementation of ray tracing mature

latent drum
#

nvidia is also fast tracking lovelace
but if lovelace leaks are true , AMD might win in raw performance

jovial tide
#

Ray Tracing for everyone

cold elbow
#

Yes

jovial tide
#

Imagine having raytracing in Ubuntu

#

Easy life, bye bye Bill Gates stealing my data

latent drum
#

linux is getting pretty good lately , steam deck running on them.. linux might fully replace windows in 2- 3 years

jovial tide
#

It won't replace but it'll be a good competition

#

They look at people like literal data slaves

latent drum
#

windows 11 feels like another shit windows that runs on phones

brave field
#

Linux can't compete with Windows for many until Dell or HP or someone rejects the 5000+ OEM Windows keys they get gifted per day

cold elbow
#

Just like free sync
Just like FSR
At the end they will dominate because they make it easier for developers to implement them on anything even your Samsung smart fridge

jovial tide
jovial tide
#

That's true you can also buy licenses for 20$ but umm

brave field
#

Prebuilts are the vast majority of the market?

jovial tide
#

does anyone here know lua

jovial tide
cold elbow
#

Linux is far from user friendly
It will need more than 3 years to be usable for everyone lol

jovial tide
#

Melon Melon install the HyperV feature and install Ubuntu through it

latent drum
jovial tide
#

It's at the point where it's just as easy as using Windows

latent drum
#

DLSS needs to implemented on the engine , no the game

#

then it can work on any game that runs on that engine

cold elbow
jovial tide
#

Like the new Ubuntu has its own GUI application manager, you need to run some commands but it's all in instructions on the web

#

I can stream it for you if you like it's so easy

brave field
#

When the average user has an OS issue, they send back their entire system. Installing a new OS is a huge undertaking for many. Need preinstalled Linux distros.

cold elbow
jovial tide
cold elbow
#

An issue that can be solved in seconds by windows

jovial tide
#

Like hyperv has quick install option for Ubuntu

#

I'm gonna show you how easy it is to install Ubuntu on top of Windows in a few screenshots

#

Step 1: enable hyper-v

brave field
#

linux, freeNAS, popOS and unraid
What is the first referring to? TrueNAS is also BSD, fair to have software problems there

cold elbow
#

Every distro has its own documentation
And each version of that distro has documentation
It's a mess for the average user or even advanced windows user

jovial tide
#

Step 2: open hyper-v in start menu, right click on your machine name, quick create
Then you can install Ubuntu like that

cold elbow
brave field
#

The raw kernel?

cold elbow
#

Ubuntu*

brave field
#

With... no shell?

#

oh

#

Ubuntu doodoo

cold elbow
#

That's the thing

brave field
#

but its recommended to people all the time, and its entirely fair to criticize the environment as a whole when people shill it like its all that exists

cold elbow
#

Every user would kill for the distro he likes

#

Or the way he does things

#

And it's easy to get lost

brave field
#

That's why I think OEMs should preinstall things the way they know their users like

#

You eliminate 90% of that choice anxiety by not forcing the user to make any choices

cold elbow
#

Every video or tutorial starts with
"It's very simple and everyone can do it but we will need to use the command line for few things" jerry

latent drum
#

what will happen if i ran my RX580 on 1500mhz

jovial tide
brave field
#

The command line is something people can use

#

but OEMs, media, Microsoft, everyone tells people that they can't use it. When you go in with the mindset that you can't, you're immediately overwhelmed. If the quickstart guide just said "type apt search yourprogram and apt install yourprogram," things are much more digestible

jovial tide
#

Chrome and steam install natively just by downloading and opening the file

#

It's far from what it used to be at least for the most part.

latent drum
cold elbow
jovial tide
#

@cold elbow I challenge you to try it through hyper-v

latent drum
cold elbow
#

Because no idea what your base clock is

jovial tide
#

20.04 version (which is now LTS)

brave field
#

I agree that its not ready for general consumer use

cold elbow
jovial tide
#

Yeah I can guess it's a bit harder to use compared to macintosh computers for example

cold elbow
#

I need to use command line to update babyharold

jovial tide
#

Like if the program's not in the directory now what?

#

But for the most part the updater exists in Ubuntu (GUI)

cold elbow
#

How am i supposed to remember all these lines

brave field
#

Definitely don't need to use the command line to update in either Ubuntu nor Pop_OS!

jovial tide
#

The application center exists, and you can install most application packages double clicking them

brave field
#

Its the only Canonical GUI-based app that works in those two

#

unlike the awful software store

jovial tide
#

You might wanna use the apt-get to purge some of the files and uninstall when it fails but that's it

cold elbow
#

So when i used popOS i downloaded anyDesk from its store

#

To realize that it wont run on startup

#

I tried everything then lesrned that i should remove it and use command line to get the software directly from their site in order to work

#

And for that if i ever want to update it i need command line.

brave field
#

Canonical has made the store entirely useless after Bionic Beaver.

jovial tide
#

Hmmm

brave field
#

18.04

jovial tide
#

How so?

cold elbow
#

That alone took too much of my time

#

And put soo much frustration

brave field
#

Those complaints are entirely valid.

jovial tide
#

I'm gonna try to install steam and chrome - send you screenshots

#

By downloading and opening the files; it's been a while

cold elbow
#

As i said

#

Problems starts to occur for special needs

jovial tide
#

And then you feel like you've disabled yourself installing it right? xD

#

I remember you saying that to me first installing Win11

cold elbow
#

That's different actually

#

Because for your case win 10 is totally functional

brave field
#

So what would you say Ubuntu-based Linux distros and FreeBSD need before they're viable? @cold elbow

#

A functioning GUI software storefront, what else?

cold elbow
#

I just want a user friendly and good documentation

brave field
#

Even if the documentation still made you use the command line?

jovial tide
#

So what's cool about linux is you get irc chat support

cold elbow
jovial tide
#

You go to their irc and probably now, discord, they will help you

brave field
#

Its better to have a manual ready than to have to go to other people though

jovial tide
#

Like how do I do this like that like that - hackermans codes hackermans codes

brave field
#

especially when someone sends you a link to totally_not_sudo_rm_-rf_/_--nopreserveroot.sh

cold elbow
#

Linux grew up as an os for servers
And how u use it is that you have the files and config files and you just deploy them to a server over the network

#

U don't even need to touch the server

jovial tide
#

OS grew up as a reference OS for universities

cold elbow
#

That's why the command line is so strong

jovial tide
#

So they had something to explain on the blackboard

cold elbow
#

U can do anything with command line and the GUIs are lacking behind

jovial tide
#

So I'm gonna go step by step if you guys don't mind

brave field
#

I mind

#

I like the discussion, without the pictures

#

but send them if you really feel you need

jovial tide
#

So I won't

brave field
#

The process is the same as it is for Windows, unless things have changed significantly?

cold elbow
#

It's easier to deploy everything with one config files to 1000 server than going over installation process with a GUI

jovial tide
#

everything's the same yes

#

you put the disk or image in it asks you for login credentials; put those in and it's installed faster than Windows

#

It will do the update automatically right after installing and it will remove all the unnecessary files

brave field
#

It can be argued the installer problems are worse on Windows, with how many programs require you to click something like "Advanced" just to get sane default settings and disable automatic malware downloads

#

but a consistent app storefront on Linux is probably impossible without some big corporation's help

jovial tide
#

The updater is as simple as going to the start menu (or whatever it's called) and pressing software updater; this (shown below) will update the OS on the fly and the programs (if repository exists)

brave field
#

When everything is built from the community, and then part of that community breaks off of their first to call them trash, and then part of that one breaks off from them to call them trash...

jovial tide
#

This is equal to doing an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade

cold elbow
jovial tide
#

that's the problem with opensource

brave field
#

Torvalds->GNU->FSF->individuals->Oracle->Canonical->Individuals nonsense right now is ridiculous

jovial tide
#

when a group just discontinues some important software that'll be left aside for a long time

cold elbow
#

Maybe steam OS will bring the majority of attention towards it

#

And that makes it better

brave field
#

You have people trying to "de-GNU-ify" their system because GNU is evil... even though GNU is just a bunch of individuals

jovial tide
#

Hmm you can download other versions

#

There's Kubuntu, Lubuntu and so on

brave field
#

Those aren't versions, really

cold elbow
#

I don't want to "change"

brave field
#

They're the exact same OS, and all share the same problems. All the Non-*buntu distros give you a choice of 3-5 DEs in the installer anyways

#

No faith in SteamOS doing a whole lot unless 3.0 is a far cry from SteamOS 2

#

You could only install SteamOS 2 by building it manually for the longest, might as well tell people to start installing Gentoo or compile Chromium OS

cold elbow
#

I don't think valve would do much either
Look at the steam interface evolution over the years

brave field
#

Proton™️ is big for pushing Linux use

#

But... literally every large company (sans Apple) will put some effort into Linux software if it makes them money

jovial tide
#

Valve will do a lot for it because of its consoles

cold elbow
#

Not really

#

It's for their platform

brave field
#

Nobody works towards making it available to the average person

cold elbow
#

Steam

#

Imagine if other companies started making their own deck running by steam OS

#

that will increase the use of steam

brave field
#

The exact plan with the SteamBoxes ^^

jovial tide
#

That's a good motive

brave field
#

Very little is done for the average person though. Everyone uses Linux when profitable, but nobody makes putting the end user on it into a profitable situation. Microsoft, Alphabet (excluding AOSP), Sony, Tencent, Epic, Valve, nobody contributes beyond internal use or a quick buck from people who don't ever plan to use Windows again.

cold elbow
#

Come to think of it

#

Steam os 2 already exists

#

Valve will never release steam OS 3

#

BECAUSE NUMBER 3

brave field
#

No, they've already confirmed the name, this is a sign!

jovial tide
#

I watched a mudahar video today saying Epic games and Valve collabed on making an anticheat for linux

#

And that the gold standard anticheat (that's used by pubg, fortnite) is supporting linux

brave field
#

EAC has had Linux versions two years ago, and Epic removed it

#

Rocket League had Linux support, and Epic removed it

#

all the free games that have had Linux versions on Steam have had that removed in the Epic releases

#

And now, 24 months later, they're scrambling to be on everything but Windows?

kindred temple
#

Epic sees royalty in abusing windows as sole platform for PC, linux is open.

latent drum
#

Zen 4 is looking pretty good

#

Hope it comes out before the end of 2022

#

Probably around Q2

#

There will be a 28 cores Ryzen 9 PogChamp

jovial tide
#

CPU mining will come out by then lol

kindred temple
#

oh my fucking god

#

ive spent 300h on PCBS PeepoWeird

#

oh btw, IT update is out and its free.

latent drum
#

And 600 in plants vs zombies garden warefare

brave field
#

CPU mining was first

#
  1. Though, only really in use now by Monero.
kindred temple
#

Ah, monero. Loved by noone but pump and dumper.

brave field
#

Hey, Monero deserves love

#

for the longest, it was the closest to decentralized one could have, and its still one of the only coins where tracking transactions is a bit difficult

#

Late 2018 just was not nice to it. Its not comparable to something like DOGE with pump and dump issues, though!

latent drum
#

Way back in the day :
Nvidia makes gpu
Intel and AMD : bullshit , this will never take off cuz CPU rendering is the best

#

Intel and AMD 8 years laterwazowski wazowski

#

Oh
PlayStation PC is a thing now

brave field
#

Playstation Mobile was renamed, ye

#

What PS exclusive games are considered worthwhile at full price?

latent drum
#

I dont know

#

But PlayStation PC publishing is a thing so more ports in the future?

#

More than ports
Maybe more games are made with PC in mind

brave field
#

If the Geforce Now leak is right... 7-9 more ports on top of what they've already done

latent drum
#

As people said it doesny make sense for sony to make PC Games but it does

#

People forget sony makes almost no profit selling playstation

#

On top of that
If someone have a PC they will either have a playstation on side or wont
Not alot of people switch back to consoles
And even if they happen to buy playstation for exclusives
They mostly are story mode so no online profits and no market place profit since they will buy non exclusive games on steam

#

Not releasing games on PC = losing potential money

brave field
#

Need to find some solid sources for the PS5, but I'm pretty sure its back to being sold at a loss, where the PS4 made them some measly $7 per console sale

#

and the PS3 was losing them so much money at launch that they entirely stopped including PS2 PCBs in them

latent drum
#

Iam sure RDNA2 + zen 2 8 cores ship and SSD + cooling cant be sold at this price point with profit unless they are holding AMD hostage or something

#

Ironic that now you can have a 8TB HDD And install every game released on the PS3 ever on it

#

Mostly*

#

Or even PS2

#

ps2 hdd edition

brave field
#

I wonder if they'll try to make their own storefront that integrates well with Steam at some point

#

They probably won't try to compete with things like Steamworks, but having access to PSN on desktop outside of the website could be nice, and they could do as much Discord Rich Presence advertising as they want with whatever event is happening next year

latent drum
#

I like to go back and read shit that aged like milk lmao

#

GOW was announced probably people like this dropped dead

Scince Xbox App on PC is basically Xbox 2.0

brave field

They release on Steam and the Xbox apps get hardly any quality of life fixes though (or maybe, nobody using the latter is the cause of the former)

#

Console companion was buggy, and they replaced it with an unresponsive beta version of what the Series store would look like. There isn't feature parity in them, half the people in that ecosystem still pay $60 a year for online, even the pricing lines up differently

latent drum
#

You dont pay for online on pc

brave field

That's what I mean

Same Xbox name, you can access the same friends list, sure

but the PC parts of it definitely get entirely different treatment

I'd guess anything Unreal/Unity/CryEngine is the standard library swapping, but they paid 3 different studios for these ports, and then purchased one of them. Will they use their new studio each time? Will the new games be designed with PC in mind from the start, with help of that studio?

latent drum
#

And i think new games will be made with PC in mind

#

Why are a lot of people complaining about "pirating" on PC
I have seen alot of pirated PS4

It's finally happening. My city is the last city in my county to get FTTH. I'll be getting it probably mid 2022.

#

The city council finally voted on allowing google fiber to expand down to my city.

It's a bit telling when rural communities in the same county have had FTTH years before my city.

arctic yarrow

I'm just saying, I've seen pricing like that for rural Canadian areas.

latent drum
#

data caps?

arctic yarrow
#

Yeah, relatively low data caps and low speeds.

#

One of the worst plans I've seen is a fixed wireless 10mbps plan with a 50gb data cap at 110 CAD/month.

#

Oh, and they pay an additional 10 CAD for every 5gb over.

jovial tide
#

Bartor it really doesn't matter

#

Cable works well too

arctic yarrow
# jovial tide Bartor it really doesn't matter

Well it kinda does when my current plan is 200mbps for $140/month with Comcast, while Google fiber gives 1gbps for $70/month. On top of that, running a server on 3mbps upload is atrocious, while I'll have 1gbps upload when I go with FTTH.

jovial tide
#

Comcast in Canada?

arctic yarrow
#

No, I'm in the US.

jovial tide
#

It is how it is

arctic yarrow
#

I said I've seen really terrible plans from some canadian ISPs, because I did outsourced support for their customers.

jovial tide
#

Idk where you live but nothing's ever equal anywhere

#

Bigger cities with more tech people living in them and fatter politicians usually get more resources. Internet just happens to be one of those resources.

#

In Canada Internet's not that expensive really, telecommunication as a whole is expensive (if you add phone bill, cellphone bill, TV bill (if you use) on top of Internet)

arctic yarrow
#

Maybe it's gotten better since I left that job 3 years ago. Some rural Canadian ISPs nickeled and dimed their customers like crazy.

jovial tide
#

Well you're saying rural what I said about is true everywhere. Rural areas just have to pay more.

#

Imagine you have a telecom company, why would you place antennas in a place with 1/100 of a population of another place and get the same money.
The smaller area has to pay more to get services per person because it just makes no financial sense.

arctic yarrow
#

That's true, but considering the cost of fixed wireless compared to wired infrastructure, you'd think they would have comparative pricing.

jovial tide
#

Those wireless antennas have a wired backbone and vice versa

arctic yarrow
#

I know that, but it doesn't require as much resources to source it.

#

Plus, I've seen FW access points feeding different access points.

jovial tide
#

Oh it does

#

Why do you think there are big names that never change?

#

Like in Canada Bell, Rogers, Telus; because it needs a shit ton of money to do anything in telecom for rural areas, and only bigger companies like those can ever afford to do something to make people happy and get their money back in 10-20 years.
