So last night I had someone messaging me with a 2060 super gigabyte windoforce oc

#

And he had NZXT cam + gigabyte auros overclock software + nvidia latest nvidia drivers which made the GPU run at much lower clocks! (like 1300 instead of 1650-2000)

#

We uninstalled NZXT cam + the gigabyte oc software and it went back to 1600-2000MHz!

#

Then I was wondering is there an alternative to NZXT cam for Kragen x53 RGB - RGB controls?

Again if you have good internet do a cloud download windows reset

It really needs alternatives with names that aren't associated with what many use it for

its very, very nice for messing around with memory and corrupting running things for fun, or looking for hidden strings

The RATE function does something completely different and takes 3 arguments anyway so what's going on here? Can you define custom functions in Excel?

Windows Defender: "Hey, we protected you from a virus!"

IntelliJ-based IDEs can automatically add exceptions if you set it to

arctic yarrow

It also automatically deleted my valheim server files for some reason.

I turn on exclusions, but every time a windows update happens, windows defender goes back to defaults

brave field

The most annoying things imo are it blocking hosts files that deny their telemetry servers and flagging legitimate mining software

arctic yarrow

Oh yeah, that happens with my ethereum miner.

brave field

I mean, I get that people do abuse open-source ones but

This is computers 101

jovial tide
#

Funny enough the manual for that product Savage uses clearly says

#

Put the pump (tach) to pump socket and fan 1 to cpu-fan + fan 2 to sys_fan#

#

And yet Melon's here insisting no need becuase ICUE KEKW

cold elbow

Btw @jovial tide
My aio has a pump, vrm fan and two radioator fans

#

Guess what???

#

They run over one header

jovial tide
#

Well true

cold elbow
#

And it doesn't have a fancy controller

#

Or a software

jovial tide
#

Each one is different in its own way

#

But dude I';ve seen some shit

cold elbow
#

The header is just a pwm header

jovial tide
#

Rust crashed over and over again because the guy connected CPU_Fan to CPU_Opt instead

cold elbow
#

Doesn't matter what u plug to it

jovial tide
#

Do you believe that?

#

And it wasn't overheating either

cold elbow
#

Probably his fan controlling software was buggy

jovial tide
#

No fan controlling software

#

Just the normal amd software

#
  • a normal fan (no liquid cooling)
cold elbow
#

I always been using the OPT header to plug fans

#

On trillion computers

jovial tide
#

Well I'm telling you this is a true story

#

As soon as we swapped it to CPU_Fan everything went smoothly

cold elbow
#

now i need a game to chill me up

jovial tide
#

@cold elbow at full load my temps is 78

#

Is that bad or normal

cold elbow
#

it's ok

#

u can drop it if you want by adjusting the fans

jovial tide
#

Yes I put 2 aio fans to extreme

#

It’s at 77

cold elbow
#

my AIO barely spins on full load

#

and it's 240

#

maybe the front fans are running low?

jovial tide
#

#

What's a good linux distro for hosting game servers? I'm getting tired of windows defender re-enabling itself and deleting my server files without permission.

arctic yarrow
#

I'll also be hosting a plex media server too

cold elbow
#

since it's fine with gaming

#

but docker is pain with popOS

brave field
#

Debian/Ubuntu Server and Alpine are my go-tos

#

also tried raspbian lite for x86 but its just Ubuntu server minus canonical's apt repos

#

Docker and Podman are flawless on them

arctic yarrow
#

Thanks, I'm downloading a Debian ISO now

brave field
#

Pop_OS! has a server distribution?!

#

I must see this!

cold elbow
#

i dont think so

he wants to host servers for gaming

#

and popOS is gaming friendly

brave field
#

Pop_OS! is for game clients and desktop use though, no?

cold elbow
#

ye

#

more user friendly

brave field
#

Window manager and DE on a server system feels weird

#

I guess asking is important

#

Is this OS install solely going to be used for server tasks?

arctic yarrow
#

It'll mainly be a game and media server host. I'm not ruling the possibility of using the server for network attached storage however.

cold elbow
#

he mentioned plex

arctic yarrow
#

Especially considering I have 10tb of space to work with

brave field
#

I mean, will you be using GUI apps on the server system itself?

arctic yarrow
#

Probably not

brave field
#

Game server, Plex, DLNA stuff, NAS programs, all are CLI on the server's side

#

ah, Ubuntu server is good for that then

arctic yarrow
#

Ok, so between Debian and Ubuntu, you recommend Ubuntu for my needs?

brave field
#

Debian Server vs Ubuntu has the same issue of Debian Desktop vs Ubuntu, you'll be missing updates and security patches for anything that isn't being run in a Docker/Podman container or a VM, unless you manually add the unstable repos

#

Ubuntu makes a tiny more sense for it, but the experience isn't much different

An old roberts radio I got working a few weeks ago. It's a mid 70's design afaik. All that was wrong with it was dirty switches & a few loose wires which stopped the FM circuit working

Rewired the plug with a period correct one. these kinda plugs are illegal to come preinstalled with tech now :I

#

#

vapid grove
#

They are. My father gave them to me, haven't actually heard them since I was ~10 years old or so.

#

Just been wrapped up sitting in a garage for the last 20ish years.

jovial tide
#

dang. i can't imagine them being too hard to fix. i'd be more worried about the speakers rotting over recapping

#

you could reuse the cabs and put some modern speakers inside. that era of audio gear was designed to be tinkered with

vapid grove
#

The woofers definitely need to be reconed, I found some recone kits awhile ago for $40 IIRC. I think the mids and tweeter are fine, but I'd imagine I can find new diaphragms if not.

#

Worst case I can replace them with some newer Klipsch drivers,

jovial tide
#

that's true. I didn't even know you could get recone kits

cold elbow
#

This looks so cool

jovial tide
#

Cookie cookie -- disabling DOCP fixed it

#

Looks like the rams were not really made for AMD

brave field
#

ah

#

ram instability sucks

#

and Corsair Vengeance LPX sucks, if you ended up with that, by chance

#

Try DOCP/XMP mhz but slightly higher CL

jovial tide
#

His ram was GSkill Trident Z Royal

#

3200

#

2x16 and clean installing radeon software (ddu + standard) + xmp off fixed it

#

after a long long time

#

I also told him to buy something like this

brave field
#

Hynix c die?

jovial tide
#

AMD certified one

#

Idk what's that Cookie (Hynix c die)

brave field
#

oh, that's Samsung B or Micron E, good ram

#

I don't know enough of the specifics to explain, contact professionals
The die indicator is more about binning and stability at lower clocks

jovial tide
#

I told him people are gonna buy your Trident Royal for 200-300 and you can buy this one easily for 20-80 dollars more

#

It's also AMD certified so I'm sure XMP will be stable (even GSkill website has it under AMD category for X570 and B550 3000 and 5000 CPUs)

#

So what I dont understand here is CPU clock is stable 100% but the GPU clock gets affected by it

kindred temple
#

stop wasting cash on getting more of the same RAM, tridentZ has pretty much the same binning.

jovial tide
#

Claire I tried it a long time ago

#

pushing it up to 3200MHz without changing other factors bricks the pc

#

I remember we had to remove battery put it back in to boot

brave field
#

Try DOCP/XMP mhz but slightly higher CL (?)

#

How is 3200cl17?

jovial tide
#

Hmm possible, we can try. I need to get his ram info though.

kindred temple
#

same latency

#

And tighten the timing by that point

brave field
#

#

kindred temple
#

i saw that typo

jovial tide
#

I mix up car engine DOHC and DOCP xD

brave field
#

In the absolute worst case scenario, you should be able to hit 2933cl16 with a tiny boost to SOC voltage (or DRAM voltage, depends on which is causing the issue)

jovial tide
#

let me show you something again

kindred temple
jovial tide
#

this is first test DOCP 👆

#

This is a random person's test

#

You see those drops in gpu clock? that's caused by the ram PES_HmmCoffee

#

this is another test @ 2133MHz (his pc)

kindred temple
#

Timespy is on DX12 thats more balanced overall, but can be taxing on CPU

brave field
#

did not even see

#

There's too many variables when you compare different graphics APIs

jovial tide
#

These rams are kind of identical 16-18-18-38

brave field
#

AMD GPUs also mildly underperform on DX11 vs DX12, RTG Windows drivers strike again!

jovial tide
#

The problem is GTAO crashing. This computer with DOCP on never had any problems with any game. on GTA specifically you have zig zag GPU clocks with XMP on.

#

But Cookie you're right it's kind of impossible to diagnose like this. many factors are into play.

fervent granite
#

Is minecraft really that cpu intensive or is java just bad?

kindred temple
fervent granite
#

#

Runs great on my machine but cpu temps are so high (at least 90° C) I just stopped playing on pc

brave field
#

@kindred temple What about Java makes it suck? Mojang made a semi-functioning creative-only version of the game in Python and it runs on the Pi where the older Java versions struggle

kindred temple
#

Bedrock runs on any fucking thing and thats on C iirc

#

C++

brave field
#

Java is about a kajillion times faster than anything in Python, why is the Python version so performant vs older Java edition versions on the Pi?

#

Bedrock's performance makes sense, yeah

kindred temple
#

Thats why fanmade optimization mods are dime a dozen. Optifine, Fabric minerals (sodium, lithium, phosphor, etc)

brave field
#

Spaghetti code is a commonly agreed on one

#

but there must be some other limitation, yeah?

#

Maybe the LWJGL?

kindred temple
#

Im not quite sure

brave field

o

fervent granite
#

Not much of a programmer, but I remember this one dude who decompiled yandere sim and didn't find a meaningful difference between spaghettig code vs switch statements

brave field
#

idk, I've been trying to learn a lot but there's very little documented

#

Even looking at the Sodium + Lithium + Phosphor stack, the developers of those say there's a load more that can be done to performance

#

but nothing really points to Java itself being the issue (its plenty fast for a game, no?), or OpenGL itself being the issue (standard in 3D animation/modeling/CAD viewports), or anything like that

#

but but but

#

comparing a super stripped down Java version to the Pi version or Bedrock always turns out weird

#

Maybe the Pi version is black magic

#

It seems like it outperforms Bedrock AND Java when things like world generation are stripped away, despite being in a language that's often orders of magnitude slower than Java and C++

fervent granite
#

I always thought the pi version was the same as that alpha demo that used to be on the app store

brave field
#

the ios app store?

#

Shouldn't be, its against apple's terms if so. The game would need to include its own PEE
