@fervent graniteDoes macOS have the ~ directory and do you know what its supposed to be?
@brave field it is supposed to be the home directory yeah

brave field
#

hmm

fervent granite
#

There’s no directory physically named “~” though

brave field
#

then I believe the OMV headless install script I used just wipes the home directory and leaves nothing left but its .deb file

#

I don't see why they'd go through the effort of making separate ones for headless and a setup with a de

#

Does the home directory existing somehow use more system resources even if nothing ever runs in them?

fervent granite
#

Well here are some of the processes running for me right now, we can obviously ignore stuff like adobe or onedrive processes

#

most user processes use similar amounts of resources so I don't think it simply existing would make any noticeable difference

brave field
#

huh

#

makes no sense to me why they'd nuke a home directory that consists of empty folders

you said something about disabling windows update, how do i do that

then change connection properties

I’m thinking on a nzxt h500 or nzxt h510 elite which one should I get

brave field
#

normal h510

#

h500 is not in production and costs more, h510 elite is just an h510 with a fan controller and an RGB strip

#

elite might be worth it if its within $5, but certainly not if the price difference is anything more than that

jovial tide
#

look into the p360a

#

for a similar price

#

p400a p500a 4000d airflow etc

brave field
#

wouldn't go that far

#

The h5xx series sucks if you're running overclocked 11th gen Intel + a 3070 or higher but for something more average its temps aren't anywhere close to being problematic, and they make cable management extremely easy

jovial tide
#

id just get a better airflow case for a similar price

#

ive heard great things about p360a

#

for 70 bucks

#

mesh front 2 rgb fans with rgb strip etc

brave field
#

Those Eclipse P cases are nice, yeah

#

The NR600 is one to consider as well, it attempts to keep something similar to the h5x0's minimalism but replaces the front with mesh

jovial tide
#

yeah

#

id just avoid nzxt though

kindred temple

@cold elbowif its okay to ask, you use password manager? 2fac?

cold elbow

No

#

Spotify has that?

brave field
#

I dunno, I don't use it, but a password manager would work on it

#

but I was thinking, is it possible you have something locally getting your info?

#

There are people with basic 1 word passes that don't get their accounts broken into

cold elbow
#

Idk a lot of my accounts keeps getting hacked

fervent granite
#

that's actually a really serious issue

jovial tide
#

ive never been hacked trollface

brave field
#

Anything like one of those bootleg Ring doorbells?

cold elbow
#

Nah

#

It's probably because i use the same password everywhere

#

Well almost everywhere

silent mason
cold elbow
#

So they keep trying because probably some app accounts got leaked

brave field
#

multiple times though...

fervent granite
#

yeah that's something you should never do

#

I used to be that way but recently I've started to move over to the bitwarden passwd manager

silent mason
#

Yeah I've moved over to Firefox Lockwise

brave field
#

I've been wanting to move to a password manager but they're so hard to trust

cold elbow
#

Some people suggest that i can host my own password manager on a server

fervent granite
#

I trust bitwarden although I would've loved to use icloud keychain, too bad it isn't supported on firefox or anything else that isn't apple for that matter

brave field
#

There is no "oops, forgot my master password" or "my config files got corrupted, can I have passwords back?" and now instead of having to guess multiple passwords, someone only needs your master to get in

kindred temple
#

Lastpass 4Head

brave field
#

selfhosted bitwarden at least fixes that third one if you don't make the port available to the outside world

kindred temple
#

Now bitwarden is dad

#

I should self host them when i get my 3rd pc

cold elbow
#

Google Chrome always been my kinda password manager

#

It saves them

kindred temple
#

Browser password manager is bad imo

fervent granite
#

I've never trusted browsers to store passwords, I always enter them in myself

brave field
#

you need 2fac on your google account then, and people are able to get your passwords easily if they have physical access to your device

fervent granite
#

they can also get your password from a compromised website that you might've used, this is why that one-password thing is dangerous

brave field
#

github

#

one file, few dependencies (forgot sqlite is used here to get them), all your passwords are gone

fervent granite
#

a few years ago while I was cleaning out my sister's laptop I could see all the stored passwords in chrome

#

they didn't even bother censoring them out with asterisks, it was as simple as going into settings

brave field
#

multiple is still strange though

#

Are you being targeted? Was your new password just as predictable?

cold elbow
#

Google told me that some of my accounts got compromised

fervent granite
#

you really should do a security audit and go through each account

cold elbow
#

Yeah

brave field
#

^and delete old accounts you'll never use again

#

read their privacy policy and if you're able to, ask them to delete everything about you too

cold elbow
#

Thing is

#

Do u know flipnote or something

fervent granite
#

the dsi application...?

cold elbow
#

An app that used to be popular

#

Lemme see

#

Evernote*

fervent granite
#

I've heard of that yeah

cold elbow
#

I had an account there but nothing really there

#

One got an email that someone logged it so i logged out and changed password

#

Few days later they logged in again

#

Deleted the account

brave field
#

evernote is terrible

#

employees had access to accounts and passwords were in plaintext iirc

#

lots of people's accounts were signed into, notes were looked at, data was leaked

#

maybe your stuff was leaked then, 2019-2020?

fervent granite
#

malware possibly?

cold elbow
#

Nah my systems are clean

#

And i changed password by the phone

fervent granite
#

something about coming across wild malware is both interesting and fucking scary man

#

I came across another fake jailbreak tool that was actually a trojan, thankfully it was already investigated but it's interesting that it's available for macos and windows

#

Nevertheless I'll archive KEKW

silent mason
#

I'm pissed off with these Unifans right now

brave field
#

Shlayer, interesting

#

wonder why they moved to python from bash with their older variants

fervent granite
brave field
#

nicely crafted fake pages prompting to install the malware under the veil of a Flash Player update

#

ah yes, classic

fervent granite
#

they get pretty crafty though, the one I got was from a fake unc0ver website tool

brave field
#

Fake Flash updates: Destroying PCs since 1997

#

fake unc0ver?

#

Was it just tossed in with the real thing, or did you not even get unc0ver with it?

fervent granite
#

nah it's just flat out fake KEKW

#

the actual tool is an ipa that would be sideload, they disguised it as a pretty gui that you run on your pc with your phone connected (does absolutely nothing to boot)

brave field
#

Ah, I was thinking of checkra1n

#

that seems high-effort

#

just grab a basic installer template, toss the malware in there with an outdated version of the real thing, and you're good. Wouldn't target something that gets distributed as a .ipa file and write a whole GUI

fervent granite
#

especially since it wouldn't be able to do much without actually using the exploits

#

pretty new too: this gem popped up in my video feed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o0r9YYPSN8

▶ Play video
brave field
#

oh ewww

#

I'll never understand these type videos

#

ones where the person making it isn't the malware author but they waste time staging a fake tutorial of them using fake software

#

How do you even find people to make videos for you like this? Offer money in their email?

fervent granite
#

Was about to say... people would need incentive to do this

#

My other guess would be that they are the author but he's just using different accounts

brave field
#

that's possible

#

but then I have to wonder for people who spread things like WannaCry or Seguarzo or things like that

#

would the authors risk using a google account, knowing one of the largest tracking companies owns the video sharing platform?

#

I can really only imagine them emailing this person and pretending to be legitimate and requesting a tutorial video

#

or malware authors are very good at changing their voices/webcams for the few videos where they show that

fervent granite
#

then again this is youtube after all, I'd imagine shit like that just goes unnoticed

#

I'm sure they have some sort of protection against that, especially when releasing a potentially widespread virus like wannacry

brave field
#

You have any idea why bash is so popular for *nix-like/based systems but Windows shell scripting always gets ignored? Why is there never .bat or .ps1 stuff floating around?

fervent granite
brave field
#

hm

#

guess its just weird

#

feels like built-in python would make distributing and executing malware EXTREMELY easy on other OSes compared to learning and using just bash

#

of course the human factor is important, and the main reason why you can't just give people adware.py and have them run it

#

but Windows stuff is always c/c++ weirdly, no shell scripts, understandably no python/java/dotnet stuff that requires a download

fervent granite
#

probably because you'd have more flexibility with c rather than shell scripts for windows

brave field
#

@fathom parcelnot able to use my microphone at the moment

brave field

I'm in a VC typing here, sorry about this. Should've gone to a DM, it just felt it would make more sense here with more people being able to help.

silent mason
#

And the unifan control box is broken.

silent mason
#

Fixed it. Whew.

silent mason
#

The tall case no longer has built in rgb... snapped the strip by accident while cable managing the strimer cables.

brave field
#

unfortunate

sinful mural
#

Dead channel

#

What do you think the GPU performance is closest to @brave field

#

Since its all from ryzen

#

I'm thinking RX 5700

#

maybe some optimization tweaks

brave field
#

Weaker than a 2060 in realtime RT, probably around the 2070 to 5700 area in raster

sinful mural
#

And some of leftover 8 core CPUs

brave field
#

also the CPUs are strange

#

they look like a 4800h which we discussed before

#

but the way the OSes are means they're even less so

#

The OS completely reserves 1-2 cores

mossy grove
#

Right fools I’m here 😂

#

And yes @brave field your right about that lol

brave field
#

not shares like on a PC, but fully reserves. Games can't even access it

mossy grove
sinful mural
#

So basically@brave field

#

Looks like a 4800h

#

Performs like a 4600h

#

All because they wanted to do all these fancy game switch techniques with the OS

#

I mean I guess it's fine since that way the OS won't affect performance on the rest of the system but it just seems unnecessary

mossy grove
#

Also did you guys know that GTA dose work on phone as in easer phone however you would have to run a VM so you can run windows however because a razor phone dose have a good processor it dose happen to be able to run the game around a stunning 55 FPS with the classic low refresh rate allowing it to run 55 but look like 60 in the human eye so that’s not bad however if we’re talking battery 🔋 it dose not last long and I would only recommend this if you have plans for a power support

sinful mural
#

I'd rather a good clean non CPU intensive UI and more CPU performance than a wierd advanced ui with all these features I'll never use

brave field
#

add in that Microsoft was encouraging developers to aim for singlecore performance because of how clocks/power is set

#

its bizarre, yeah, but having the option to turn it off would be bad

sinful mural
mossy grove
#

The good news is the one plus charger happens to be around 30 what’s to 20 what’s because of the good friend USB type C so it’s a faster charge depending on the device your running

sinful mural
#

Mobile processors are pretty powerful nowadays

#

And GTA 5 runs on a toaster

#

Well not really

#

But 720p 60 seems achievable

#

Maybe slightly less than 720p

mossy grove
#

I would of course still recommend having s power block or a power case that stores extra power so the psu dose not time itself out after a limited amount of time yes razor phones are using pc CPUs however still running Android APU and because of that you would have to run a VM on top and that can burn extra power lol

sinful mural
#

lowest settings 720p

brave field
#

I have a few doubts

sinful mural
#

I've been saying GTA can run on mobile processors for a couple years now

brave field
#

VMs on Android is in a terrible state

sinful mural
#

IDK why they haven't made a port

sinful mural
mossy grove
#

@brave field same here because if the CPU or any one of those fans quit the phone would quit because a phone is not meant for gaming however the hardware itself is

#

@brave field yes they are sadly a bad state however if you have pc components in your phone there’s no reason why it won’t run however you have to think of processing power

#

Because that’s a load lol it’s gonna have to go somewhere

brave field
#

Also, x86 on ARM is pain, regardless of components right now

mossy grove
#

And on top of that the razor 🪒phone dose opt about 16 GB of ram and 4 that can be switched to storage

#

@brave field haha true that 😂😂😂

sinful mural
#

Is there any videos of it running on Android?

mossy grove
#

It works however it’s a pain and it has low low gameplay and nope @sinful mural not that I have found lol

#

It of course would have to be tweaked to run tho

brave field
#

If you really do have proof of GTAV on Android I'm interested in the software they're using to emulate essential parts of Windows

sinful mural
#

Same

mossy grove
brave field
#

I can't even find a good VM manager fkr Android on Android yet

#

VMOS is it, and its extremely shady

sinful mural
#

Windows on the new m1 iPad tho

#

I'm very curious

brave field
#

Rosetta is dead

#

Is it Windows on ARM?

#

How would they have Windows on the iPad without it?

sinful mural
#

Didn't they get a fully working copy of windows 8 on IOS? @brave field

brave field
sinful mural
#

My bad it was Windows XP @brave field

#

I'm a dumbass

#

Can GTA even run on XP?

brave field
#

with tweaks, possibly

#

definitely not out of the box

#

XP is stuck with Directx9

fervent granite
#

@sinful mural I know for a fact they ported windows xp to iOS

#

You get like 5 fps but it works-ish

sinful mural
#

Wonder if it'll change with the m1 iPad

fervent granite
#

It’s pretty old though, I’m sure it runs much better now

brave field
#

How did they get that to work?

#

A direct port, since chunks of XP's source were released?

#

some translation/emulation/virtualization stuff?

fervent granite
#

Well I guess ported was the wrong word, they basically modified an xp image and made a virtual machine app

#

ibox it was called

#

I think they made a better vm app but I forgot what it was called

sinful mural
#

The frustrating thing is finding people that actually gave enough of a shit to even attempt it

#

It seems like windows XP runs relatively fine

#

Unfortunately it seems like Ram usage will be limited to only around 30%

brave field
#

interesting

sinful mural
#

M1 iPad pro has 16 gigs of ram

#

So

#

Can GTA run on 4 gigs of ram

#

Probably not very well

fervent granite
#

Couldn’t you artificially limit it to only 4 gb?

sinful mural
#

Oh nevermind

brave field
#

It probably could run

sinful mural
#

The minimum requirements says 4gb

#

So

#

Probably could

fervent granite
#

If only rockstar could make gta ports PainChamp

brave field
#

Assuming you're running singleplayer, 4gb would be semi-okay on lowest settings

sinful mural
#

Lowest settings 720-900p wouldn't look that bad on an 11 inch screen

fervent granite
#

I actually think it could pull it off

brave field
#

The Xbox One does it with a total of 5gb split between system ram and vram

fervent granite
#

Gta 5 on my MacBook runs at a smooth 60 on normal settings

#

And this is on integrated graphics

sinful mural
#

I'm thinking realistically 30fps

brave field
#

The M1 is certainly capable hardware-wise

sinful mural
#

Maybe 60

fervent granite
#

I doubt apple would add Rosetta 2 to the iPad though

brave field
#

overkill, even. We'd see the same singlecore flaw every other platform has before any part of the M1 would be a limiting factor

#

Rosetta 2, what state is it in?

#

First it was going to be put on everything, then its macOS only, then its cancelled/removed, now its region-locked?

sinful mural
#

Assuming the performance hit isn't too hard with the VM using m1

#

And allocating 4gb of memory

#

Probably could do 720p lowest

#

Either 30-40fps or more

#

Probably not more

#

Probably just 30-40fps

fervent granite
#

I guess available everywhere unless copyright laws say otherwise

brave field
#

ah

#

speaking of copyright laws

#

Why is Rosetta 2 a copyright issue at all?

sinful mural
#

Somebody got windows xp to work with half life

#

So that's something I guess

#

All we need now is for somebody to install 3d mark on Windows XP on their iPad pro @brave field

brave field
#

hm yes

#

I wish we could push for native *nix ports of games

fervent granite
#

@brave field 9to5mac said it could be because translation software might use proprietary x86 code

brave field
#

ah

fervent granite
#

…Intel threatened Microsoft by claiming that the x86 architecture has proprietary technologies and could not be emulated on other processors without permission.

#

Just like the original Rosetta technology, Rosetta 2 lets users run macOS apps from one platform on another — this time translating Intel apps to the ARM architecture of the M1 chip. While I don’t expect Rosetta to go away any time soon, Apple may disable it in some regions as macOS 11.3 beta codes […]

brave field
#

Intel threatened Microsoft... wonder how that would go with Apple

fervent granite
#

I guess apple is playing the safe game but I’m sure apple could counter it if they wanted to

brave field
#

On one hand, Apple pretty much called Intel out and now Intel is advertising against them frop dropping their CPUs. On the other hand, Apple's mobile devices exclusively use Intel network adapters. But this is just in the realm of selling products, not really licensing or anything software, nor their actual business relationship

#

@fervent graniteWhat are your thoughts on something like a "jailbroken" ipad pro?

#

we don't really have much info on how things would be with the M1 ones but

mossy grove
#

I am back I just flopped kids ok league of legends

#

I’m really thinking about playing comp for this lol

brave field
#

I can see some Debian-based Linux distros being awesome on it if they could get the GPU in the M1 to work with it

mossy grove
#

Honestly shits insane lol

fervent granite
#

I mean it would certainly be a killer tablet KEKW

#

The thing that really holds it back is iOS

#

Tweak devs can do some amazing stuff but at the end of the day it’s limited by the os

if it is possible could i put two 3090s in my pc?

brave field

You could, its possible

jovial tide

so i didnt buy the second one for nothing...

brave field
#

If you're thinking of using two to get better performance in something like a game, its pointless

#

but for 3D rendering in something like Blender or Maya its very, very useful

jovial tide
#

no i just wanna tell people i have two 3090s

brave field
#

It would be so, so nice

#

M1 ipad with a stronger frame running Manjaro

#

no Apple software, no slimy Windows if you don't care about games

fervent granite
#

well apple software is partly what gives apple product's their "magic"

I suppose

yeah even the newer ios vm platform which is utm wouldn't take advantage of the m1's power

#

it requires a jailbreak for ios 14 and it doesn't support gpu virtualisation

brave field
#

people find ways to run the Linux kernel on anything

#

native would be best

fervent granite
#

given that the bootloader hasn't been cracked since the iphone 2g days I don't see it happening in the future for running native linux

brave field
#

ios is just... painful, sorta

#

I get the tradeoff between simplicity and power but its just too much

#

Sucks enough that windows disincentives people from learning by hiding pretty much everything as an "advanced" option or putting in "ease of use" features that are hard to disable and annoy power users

#

but ios is designed in a way where you don't even have a choice to mess with things if you wanted

#

Seeing macOS and iOS as products from the same company is just shocking

fervent granite
#

but the advantage is that they "just work" because they're made for the hardware that runs it

#

I guess it's just that they're made for the general audience, I mean try sitting your average user in front of an arch install screen and see how far they get kek

#

I can at least give macos props for giving you the option to enable su and disable sip, but ios can be both a blessing and a curse sometimes

brave field
#

something that's approachable, doesn't get in the user's way, doesn't make it hard to transition from an average user to a power user, but still is somehow hard to mess up would be ideal, but sadly is probably impossible

#

agh, deleted the dumb rant and I can't type out my thoughts either

fervent granite
#

read it anyway :P

brave field
#

Some middle ground with both OSes and software would be so nice

#

I mean

fervent granite
#

I guess when they're making their os's they assume that the user won't know any "advanced" features

#

they could learn sure, but the reality I think is that most users just don't care to

brave field
#

I agree with that

fervent granite
#

in basically every pc os there's nothing stopping anyone from opening the command line, it's just unless they have a reason to they won't bother to

brave field
#

but not hiding a useful option deep within 3 menus would at least not disincentive people from attempting to learn as much, and then having that skill is better than being completely helpless

#

I think I have a way to express it

#

simple things shouldn't be weak, they should be simple

#

These companies could have much more capable customers if "simple" was also powerful and safe

fervent granite
#

so what you're saying is, they should bring order to complexity?

brave field
#

capable customers is the opposite of what most companies want, but it would be nice to have

#

urh, maybe, yeah

fervent granite
#

straight from jony ive kek

brave field
#

You're going to have something not work regardless of what device you try to use

#

but whether you choose to have a company fix it for you or you choose to fix it manually, you shouldn't ever be forced into one option, and you shouldn't have to fight against the software you use just to fix the issue

fervent granite
#

now that makes sense

#

I do agree but at the same time, there's always going to be something blocking you just because the company needs to make money

#

One of the biggest imo is proprietary hardware/software, there's no getting around it it's just the way it is

#

for example, although android gives you lots of freedom you can't really do much if your device's bootloader is locked, and that's just because it was designed that way

brave field
#

Yes and that's trash and I hate it

#

But nothing can be done. Its extremely profitable

#

And people are very quick to let go of their money

#

And even if you do work towards not being helpless, you still have to deal with not having control over your device 90% of the time

#

Google, Apple, and Microsoft all keep their backdoors to abuse for whenever they think it would make sense Sadge

#

There are benefits, but there are drawbacks too, and I wish we could have the former without the latter

fervent granite
#

it's kind of alarming that faang (faamg?) basically power the internet

#

but yeah at some point you just have to cut your losses peepoShrug

Anyone know how to replace the light strip in the Phanteks Enthoo 719?

brave field

Does it look like a normal 3/4/5pin RGB strip, or are they being "fancy"/anti-consumer and using a special connector or MOLEX/SATA/USB? @silent mason

silent mason
#

But it goes from the inside of the case around to the top, and then round the front and then round the bottom.

brave field

#

you have a way inside at all without risking denting or damaging something?

silent mason
#

Does that showcase the RGB of the case properly?

brave field
#

you able to tell if there are normal strips inside the casing there?

#

a standard strip behind that sort of translucent plastic

silent mason
#

Yeah it looked like a normal strip inside the case. Dunno about outside.

brave field
#

ah

#

if you're able to find how they all connect together internally, it should be easy to grab an aftermarket strip and throw it in, its just that first part that would be difficult if its not built to be opened up

silent mason
#

Yeah, if I could find a teardown for the case that'd help but it's so hard to find.

#

Other option is waiting just under 3 years for the warranty on the components inside to expire and then buying a new case.

#

@night timber Do you know how I can send a list/dict using socket easily?

night timber
#

nope, didn't do socket programming before

brave field
#

I've read some SO posts about it but the best I have so far is to encode, convert it to a string, decode, and then put it inside eval() to turn it back into a list

#

ah

#

Something about having eval() in it worries me

night timber
#

eval doesn't worry me

#

exec does

#

I've seen some beginners commit unforgivable sins with exec, if you know what I mean

brave field
#

hm

night timber
brave field
#

From what I've understood while reading, I can't directly send the list through socket, and it acts weird when I try

night timber
#

and what does it have to do with the CSRF attacks I was talking about thonk

brave field
#
aaa = str(aaa).encode()
s.send(aaa)

is on the client, and

aaa = aaa.decode()
aaa = eval(aaa)

is on the server

#

oh uh, nothing, was just wondering if you knew an alternative

#

I have't researched eval enough, is it easy for someone to just throw whatever malicious stuff they want in there?

night timber
#

ah, right, eval can have malicious input

#

that's why input sanitization is important

#

that was 12 years ago, but I doubt eval changed much

brave field
#

You can get to os using builtin functions sadness

#

so that SO answer essentially just said to open up SSH but with no auth, very nice of that user

#

I wanted to do things the quick and easy way but I guess I'll write a function for dealing with it

#

eval was just such a nice way. The string without the eval statement is literally the list but as text
something like "['1','2','3']". But if I try to have that convert to a list automatically, it makes a list out of every character

night timber
#

ye, taking any unsanitized input is very dangerous, I never encountered someone doing malicious stuff with eval before, but it can happen (that's why I am struggling to answer a bit)

#

I mean, if the user can't input stuff to eval, which means only you input stuff to it, I guess it's safe

brave field
#

There's no user input, but the way the server/client is set lets anything that knows the port number interfere

#

any other device on the LAN that can send a string to that port can use the eval

night timber
#

oh, how would it interfere exactly? can it send direct input to your socket?

brave field
#

yeah

#

This is REALLY primitive and basic, there's no sort of auth or checking if the devices match or anything of the sort right now

#

Its "Here's a port, listen to whatever ends up here and evaluate it"

#

the reason I'm struggling with it is because I need the receiving one to turn the string back into a list, but what the sender will send varies in length, I can't just get substrings easily without first modifying the list before its sent, and that would probably slow things down a bit

night timber
#

I mean, that's pretty unsafe, you should code a function to sanitize user input before you evaluate it then, since I never used sockets before I don't really know how to help any further, but the solution here is to completely dump eval and find a way to send the list as a list, I'll do some research and tell you about the solution

brave field
#

Thanks for the advice

#

I'll look further into it

Simply going to a site won't give you a virus

#

If you're talking about one of those fake mobile popups, just close the tab. If you didn't download anything, you're fine

hearty stirrup
#

Since theres still almost no ps4 emulation do u guys think a ps5 one is gonna be possible before the decade is over lol

urban tree
#

Effectively I deleted everything possible to delete from google

#

But my phone was telling me the tablet was off! This tablet

#

What tablet

#

Wtf

#

And when I entered that site I did not allow him to give me notifications

#

Do you think it was bug or virus

brave field
#

neither

#

Those mobile popups are everywhere

#

and its normal for them to be wrong and misrepresent your device

#

especially if you're on Android

urban tree
#

Okay, so it's not a virus.

brave field
#

LG and Motorola phones running Bromite or other Chrome forks in particular get detected as tablets, Kindle Fires, or even Android Desktop systems often

urban tree
#

I'm from huawei

#

So it's okay to make mistakes once in a while? It's not virus it's buh

#

Bug

brave field
#

I think I misinterpreted this, actually

#

Its no issue if your phone says "plug in this tablet" when at low battery, its possible Huawei made a mistake there.

#

The site should not have given you any problems if you didn't download anything, still, but the charging message, if it happened outside of your web browser or app, is fine

#

If you DID download and install something, you'll have issues, though. You should uninstall whatever you uninstalled if that's the case.

#

@hearty stirrup I think PS5 emulation isn't going to progress at all until PS4 gets worked out, yeah

urban tree
#

I didn't install anything

brave field
#

PS4 emulation is making some nice progress but they're getting held up working on however the OS deals with splitting that one chunk of 8gb of ram into vram and ram for the OS and ram for the main app being run. The PS5 being so close to PC hardware now is also a problem. AMD and Intel would need to improve much more than they did over the past decade by then

urban tree
#

Oh thank you so much I was very scared

brave field
#

I think we'd need the sort of performance gains you'd see in the 90's for PS4 emulation to be viable even if the emulators were perfect

hearty stirrup
#

Yeah just a quick google search shows pretty much no actual ps4 games are emulated at all

brave field
#

Spine can run the Megaman collection, Orbital can run the home menu in safe mode

#

GPCS4 can output sound, I think

hearty stirrup
#

Looked up ps5 emulator for fun so many fake programs and videos

brave field
#

I really hate all the fakes and such

#

Nobody new to emulation wants to try something out and their first attempt ends in ransomware 😦

#

PCSX4's site needs to get destroyed

#

another fake, a long-standing one

hearty stirrup
#

Is device emulation the only way or is there another way people recode console games to pc

brave field
#

They can make a native or semi-native port if the source code for the game gets released

hearty stirrup
#

That happens with old games i assume?

#

Or just leaks

#

Heard something about projectred or whatever cyberpunk studio is called get hacked and the threat was leaking source code lol

#

No idea how the situation turned out

brave field
#

I think they restored from a backup

#

Source code can get out for any game

#

but you need the assets too

#

that's a bit easier for older games where you might be able to substitute things like textures from the console version's files. Mario 64 PC and GTA 3/VC PC both work this way.

#

But for many games you still have the issues of system-specific calls in the source code, audio being processed differently by different platforms and anything GPU-related will be incompatible. Even harder for new games where shaders have to be compiled and the GPU-related work was done in full by the original developers instead of letting the GPU driver do all the work. I don't really work on this stuff, its probably extremely tiring and annoying to deal with

hearty stirrup
#

Yeah and game specific whereas if device emulation works all games should

#

My 3200g wasnt good enough for the ps3 god of war 3 game should i even try zelda and mario for the switch

brave field
#

If the Zelda game you're interested in is BoTW, dump the game from a Wii U and play it on CEMU instead

#

PS3 emulation is insane

hearty stirrup
#

Yeah botw and odyssey

brave field
#

BoTW will have a few hiccups on a 4 core but its very, very playable. If you play the game at its native 720p30 it'll be flawless.

#

Playing at 1080p with the framerate unlocking packs gave me around 50-70fps on a 2200g about a year and a half ago

#

around 40fps at worst

#

Not a perfect 60 but if you have Freesync/gsync it'll be good

hearty stirrup
#

That is very playable in my book

brave field
#

considering playing it on your own switch or wii u has drops into the low 20s, yeah, its pretty good

#

CEMU's creators did really well, wish it was open source

hearty stirrup
#

God of war 3 ran at 9 fps really not playable

brave field
#

You really need 12+ threads for RPCS3 or Intel TSX, everything else just suffers

hearty stirrup
#

Last of us is also a console exclusive right

brave field
#

The emulation for the SPUs/PPE is going need 6 threads at least to work well

#

Last of Us is console-exclusive, yeah

#

Days Gone just got ported to PC though, so maybe it'll show up in a year?

hearty stirrup
#

Alright nice talking to you gonna watch resident evil village now 😂

brave field
#

Horizon, Detroit, Days Gone, Death Stranding, soon FF7R, lots of PS exclusives seem to be on PC now

Question: I'm trying to make a build for my friend, and I'm not sure which PSU to pick. They're on a limited budget of ~900£, I don't want to go for something so expensive, neither do I want the mobo and GPU to die, what do you suggest?

brave field
rapid lake
#

It won't need more than 600 watts I'm sure

#

It's a 3600x with a 1660 super

brave field
#

Why a 3600x with 1660S? Is the 3600x heavily discounted right now?

rapid lake
#

They don't want to build the PC themselves, so they're doing it through a website, and that's the best CPU I could find, you don't get to choose whatever you like

brave field
#

ah

rapid lake
#

I wish I could've gone for a 2600x

#

Because I'm well over budget rn

#

I'll give you a link to it if you're free, you can probably make the best out of that 900, unlike myself

brave field
#

His is under the "Ryzen Extreme" category?

rapid lake
#

I need to have another look, just a minute

#

Yes, it is

brave field
#

ah, I made one under home/office

#

They're price gouging a bit hard here

rapid lake
#

It'll be used for animation

#

That's as far as I was told

brave field
#

any idea on 2d vs 3d?

#

a program he uses, maybe?

#

makes a huge difference with hardware now

#

A 2060 is roughly 6x as fast as a 1660 super in rendering in Blender Cycles, he'll REALLY not want to miss out on that even if it requires more work and going through parts of the build process

#

and it should fit in this budget if we cut down on all the parts this site overcharges for, like storage, and replace them with store-bought ones

rapid lake
#

She'll be using a program called "Maya", also they want to game on the system

#

For 3d animating

brave field
#

Maya has Arnold, hm

#

The GPU is a bit less important there but the denoising makes the viewport much better still

rapid lake
#

I'll just act like I know what you're talking about

brave field
#

Uh, an RTX GPU is still very useful here but its not a make or break like it is with some other 3d animation programs

#

This comes out to £755 without VAT for me, did that 900 from before include VAT?

rapid lake
#

They just said they'll also use Unity

brave field
#

I'm not sure what you have on the site, but toss in the TX550M and swap the 3600x for a 3600

rapid lake
#

I couldn't get it under 900

brave field
#

and if you can, ask when they'll have 10400/f in stock again, its nearly £60 cheaper than the 10500 they offer and is cheaper than the Ryzen options too

#

I get it to fit under £900 by dropping to a 1TB hard drive and 256gb SSD but neither of those are great to cut down on for this, agh

rapid lake
#

You can have 100 more in that case

#

They just prefer to stay under 900

#

But their full budget is 1000

brave field
#

gonna go with 3600 + 1660S + B450-Plus, the 2400mhz 2x8gb kit unfortunately, 256GB SSD, 2TB Barracuda, the TX550M, and removing the wifi card and recovery media and OS license

rapid lake
#

Which SSD did you take?

brave field
#

Took the mystery SATA one

rapid lake
#

Great. Didn't realise they had to charge 70 just for the OS

brave field
#

Unity and Maya also both run very well on Linux, if she can't get ahold of a Windows 7/8 key and hates the watermark

rapid lake
#

We shall see. Thank you very much, friend!

brave field
#

anytime, friend

Got a question. I have a cable drop comcast replaced 2 years ago that still hasn't been buried, even with us constantly calling and trying to get them to bury it, and I'm frankly sick of dodging it every time I need to mow the lawn. What would be the best way for me to bury it myself? I have some sprinkler lines I'd rather not hit that I'm unable to locate at the moment, and I'm also wondering if I should install a conduit as well.

#

Also, how would I locate the sprinkler lines?

Aptio setup utility 2012 in an old ASUS. Does anyone know how to solve it? Even if i press "exit", it goes back to this screen

Ping me if you know it please

brave field

@olive daggerdo you have a "Launch CSM" option?

olive dagger
#

Let me check

#

...i'm starting it up and it shows the asus logo instead of the screen

#

Did it fix itself

#

I've googled it and apparently closing the screen isn't permanent tho

#

HOLY it's started up normally, what the hell?

brave field
#

Seems this issue is related to secure boot, a feature that doesn't benefit the user at all while causing problems if something goes wrong

#

might look into disabling it if this happens again

olive dagger
#

I tried disabling it and even if i saved and left it would go back to the screen

brave field
#

Secure boot relies on both your OS install being good and your mobo

#

its possible something weird is going on with your OS, then

vapid grove
# arctic yarrow Also, how would I locate the sprinkler lines?

The only way to do it is to dig down at the sprinkler head to see which direction the line goes. Draw a diagram of your yard and plot the heads to get a picture of the layout. Sprinkler systems usually only use 90° bends and Ts, and have straight runs, so with some guesswork it shouldn't be too bad to trace back to your inlet.

#

If memory serves they are usually buried like 5 to 8 inches deep at max. Been a long time since I had to repair one so I could be wrong on the depth.
