works if you plan to never use the alienware until you have a new SSD for it

kindred temple
#

It is, much like other OCZ product

#

Theyre like maserati of storage

arctic yarrow
#

Well actually, what's installed is literally a media converter for the ftth to ethernet conversion, then you plug your own router in.

unreal iron
#

The what

kindred temple
#

They go fast, but theyll break on you hard

unreal iron
#

Oh lol

#

So on that ssd because it's so small

#

I have Windows 10, world of tanks and world of warships, and like some antipiracy tbing

#

Because that's all that fits

brave field
#

oh right, that's the 128gb one

arctic yarrow
#

I wouldn't install windows on a drive smaller than 240gb, but that's just my preference.

brave field
#

yeah buy the new SSD

#

128gb is near unusable

kindred temple
#

Its usable for a boot drive and a SINGLE esports title.

#

Not even AAA, just an esports title.

unreal iron
#

Well

#

Tanks is all I need it to play so

brave field
#

boot drive if none of your programs ever access your user directory or force themselves to put any files on C:\

unreal iron
#

I'd like to play forza again but that's more of a convenience

#

Not a necessity

arctic yarrow
#

I have 3 X 1TB ssds and a 6tb hdd.

#

total of 9tb in my primary pc.

kindred temple
#

While we talk about storage

#

But samsung gotta go

#

"haha cheap 3D nand go brrr"

unreal iron
#

Are ssd prices currently inflated too?

#

I can wait for it to drop

kindred temple
#

Kinda

brave field
#

inflated a wee bit

unreal iron
#

Ok so no lol

#

Are any of these other parts inflated other than powerplant?

brave field
#

Its more they've stopped going down, which is still sad

#

no more "Wait a week, it'll be 80c cheaper"

#

DRAMless 1TB was so close to being $55 PepeHands

arctic yarrow
brave field
#

these drive names are not spicy enough

arctic yarrow
#

Ok, what do you suggest my drive names be?

unreal iron
#

I don't understand.

#

V M?

brave field
#

VMs drive, yesyes

arctic yarrow
#

How about "HoneyPot V (M:)"?

brave field
#

Why "New volume," "My SSD," or "Drive" when you can have "{generic roman/greek mythology name}" a poor attempt at humor, or "DISK 0"

arctic yarrow
#

Oh I know, I could rename my 6tb drive to "PORN".

unreal iron
#

Are greek/roman god names generic?

#

Are they that common?

brave field
#

Extremely

#

Discord bots, people who name their PC builds, drives, websites

#

can't escape them

kindred temple
#

I remember naming my boot drive "Tungsten Rod"

#

Basically Orbital Cannon reference.

unreal iron
#

Lol

fervent granite
#

For some reason I used to be somewhat picky that my boot drive be unnamed

#

This was before I tech-savvy, so I thought having the disk called "local disk" was rare as it didn't have a label in explorer

#

That said I think the best name for a volume should be "con"

brave field
fervent granite
brave field
#

You also have nul, prn, com1-com9, and lpt1-lpt9

#

:, or anything starting with a period on macOS

#

and naming a folder and two subfolders with a symbolic link "/" on anything

fervent granite
#

You'll make windows freak out if you make 2 folders called ">" and "<", respectively

fervent granite
arctic yarrow
kindred temple
#

God bless MS Dos era bug.

fervent granite
#

Not even wsl will obey you, so it can only be done from another os

arctic yarrow
#

oh

#

so I gotta boot up linux or something, then transfer it to windows from there

fervent granite
#

well no just boot up a live usb and access the windows drive

#

except for a few exceptions, linux doesn't really care what you name folders

jovial tide
#

i finally completed my sister/s pc

#

and its kinda slow

#

it will be enough for her ig

#

367 cinebench r15 score

#

and a gt 1030

#

which is surprisingly good

#

should i add a cheap sata ssd

kindred temple
jovial tide
#

but its like

#

200 less than that

#

is it bad tho?

kindred temple
#

Nope, iirc an i7-3770k also score at 360-400 range.

#

But really

#

Cinebench score is like the horsepower chart in cars.

jovial tide
#

so its good for a c2q?

kindred temple
#

Yeah sure, cool and all but you wont benefit in it irl.

jovial tide

Thats why Intel really bank on being able to boost the everliving fuck out of 1-2 cores

To mask their all core weaknesses in some tasks.

ohh

#

What, if any, are good reasons to use MongoDB, SQLite, or MySQL over PostgreSQL?

spring condor
#

MongoDB is nosql, so it's much faster than all the SQL rdbms

#

But I myself use post anyways, so

brave field
#

Do people actually use it? I need to scrape up some internship or minimum-wage job and have 2 weeks to learn

#

I mean uh, small business

#

that's a terrible question

#

I mean, will spending time learning it be "wasted?"

spring condor
#

Mongo and postgres are being used quite a lot

#

The other 2, questionable

brave field
#

Ah

#

you have a recommendation out of those two? I got the absolute very very basics of Postgres

#

hesitant on Mongo because it seems to either require an account or I'm stupid

spring condor
#

Cover postgres first. It's very similar to all the SQL database systems so you'll cover a wide area

html

node would be cool tho

spring condor

Then cover js full on from the start. C++ is pretty much not in demand anywhere

ember hawk
#

iโ€™m trying to code video game hacks

#

for csgo

#

spring condor
#

Ah

#

Then start off with OOPS concepts first

ember hawk
#

what dat

spring condor
#

Object oriented programming

#

C++ is an OOPS language

ember hawk
#

oh cool

spring condor
#

So you need to know it's concepts to understand

ember hawk
#

are there any resources i can use to learn

spring condor
#

Then you can start off simple with w3schools or geeks4geeks

Short answer: Fuck no.
Long answer: Maybe, if you have several decades of training/education, and a shitton of expensive equipment.

Thats under the assumption they're referring to gaming graphics cards, which they most likely are.

jovial tide
cold elbow
#

Buy a gt 730

jovial tide
#

You can replace the vram with higher capacity chips

arctic yarrow
jovial tide
#

Whenver 10 gb isnt enough im going to try it before buying a new card lol

arctic yarrow
#

Ok, for mining it would probably be worth it, but not for gaming.

#

My observation is that swapping the vram gives you a 3 fps boost max.

cold elbow
#

Youll never need more than 10gb

jovial tide
#

Yeah but when games need higher res textures and shit like that more vram will be nice

arctic yarrow
#

I'd honestly only do it if I was bored and was planning on buying a new graphics card anyway.

arctic yarrow
#

Tf am I doing at midnight drunk af and talking about swapping vram? I got school at 6.

jovial tide
#

3080 is an extremely beefy card besides the low vram in my opinion

#

lol

fervent granite
#

I wish you could substitute ram for gpu memory

#

Like maybe partition 8 gb of ram exclusively for graphics, itโ€™s much faster than vram iirc

cold elbow
#

gpu memeory is faster than RAM

#

also has less latency

fervent granite
#

But itโ€™s also bigger physically

#

Why have that huge component when you could use a stick of ram? Theoretically of course

kindred temple
#

I mean, you can do with GDDR as system memory

#

case & point Xbone

fervent granite
#

Then just make a stick of ram optimised for graphics :P

buoyant fiber
#

why would you want to increase the distance between the compute and memory tho?

kindred temple
#

:yikes: @fervent granite @brave field

#

Yeah

#

#

balmy kiln

#

Need some help again lol
I got my M2 installed with windows and it boots up in less than ten seconds (holy shit) but a planned problem came up - none of the stuff on my HDD is showing, so things like my wallpaper, my local windows account I sign in on, none of my home tiles on the home screen are there, ect. All things you would imagine to happen.

What I'm wondering is, how do I get all the stuff that normally loads on my hard drive to load now that I boot off of an M2? I just want the SSD to boot windows, the HDD can handle the rest. Is there a way to have it so that I can set my computer to load how it normally does with the HDD?

#

Idk how to explain my problem, so in turn I just don't know what to Google

balmy kiln
#

I've also noticed that even though I've still got the HDD installed and can still open it in file explorer, if I try to open an application from it, it doesn't work. Hence another reason to be able to access both drives at the same time and set everything back up to the way I had it while just having the SSD boot windows and nothing more

potent spear
#

So uh

#

just get used to having two different drives

#

ez

balmy kiln
#

Shit

#

So it's either

A: buy a 2TB SSD and copy over the entirety of my hard drive to it

B: do some serious research on how to copy over things like my entire steam application, Oculus stuff, and so many other things then do some serious picking and choosing since my 256gb ssd is like 1/10th the storage space of my 2tb hdd

C: let the SSDs sit there cuz lol pretty lights, and continue to suffer from atrocious waiting times

#

Not fun, noooot fun

brave field
#

@fervent granite that's how things work now

#

But gddr DIMMs... Interesting.
Maybe have GPUs have their own slot for a VRAM upgrade? Still extremely slow, but a small few programs might benefit

That was how it one on the xbox one x

jovial tide

light sinew

Well, you can't unless it was done through scratch I assume and doing this would make the system completely unmodular.

spring condor
#

Oh, dam

light sinew

You can't do it with a regular computer

#

But a console that is never going to be opened up or modified in any way was a good candidate for it.

#

Which is probably why whenever you took apart an xbox one it bricked sometimes

It doesn't make all that much of difference in the end you are better off going the regular computer modular route

brave field

they rile up gamers while everyone else knows there's no chance this would do anything, then they remove it and people realize they'd never handicap their largest source of income, then they say removing it was an accident and now its found it only affects GPUs without a display connected

jovial tide
#

now they can buy the card that is basically made for mining

#

and let gamers buy the 3060ti

brave field
#

everything about it is useless

jovial tide
#

3060 garbage

brave field
#

I like AMD's approach: "We will not limit any workloads on our hardware"

#

Not only does messing with it not solve the fact that there's a pandemic going on that's hurting wafer production WORLDWIDE, it also causes drama and has people at each other's throats for no reason

kindred temple
#

Not like all they did is basically liquidating the macbook pro GPU stocks.

#

Thats what the mining cards of AMD is. Just repackaged macbook pro GPU.

brave field
#

That's fair

#

they sell those dies straight to huge farms that can afford to make their own PCBs and write the own OSes for it

#

Won't ever get them the joyous response they want from reddit like Nvidia's lie, but its good it goes somewhere

kindred temple
#

Liquidating legacy stocks are fine. Its basically a way to stop literal sands from flooding the landfill.

#

But what nvidia did is just gross.

brave field
#

right

#

and Nvidia did this KNOWING large farms buy mining SKUs

#

just stirring up the frustration between consumers

kindred temple
#

Honestly i want Eaton to make like mining UPS or something.

#

Just throw a bone so CMP isnt completely useless and miners can use it to death

brave field
#

CMP isn't useless though

#

its a bit late, its efficiency is... questionable

kindred temple
#

Thats the issue i have.

#

If its JUST released right on january where the BTC about to spike

brave field
#

and it does nothing for hobbyist/home miners, but the farms that can buy 50+ cards at once prefer mining SKUs, since they can buy on contract and get separate warranty treatment and all

#

plus, no having to ensure your tuning software works with a new model, since they don't automatically try to GPUBoost3 themselves to the moon

#

timing... yeah

#

They really should've had something ready around RTX 2XXX Super time, though

#

surely they didn't think they could just make P10X one time and never deal with it again?

kindred temple
#

AFAIK 1080Ti hash is still better than 3060

brave field
#

in that case

#

bring back P102 for large farms

#

ampere and turing don't have much over Pascal for mining other than GDDR6/X

#

Let the leftover Turing dies for CMP become RTX 3050 or something

#

Then its cheaper to produce, you don't hurt hobbyist mining, and large farms get their bulk order mining SKU that requires no software fiddling

#

win-win-win?

Before the graphic card spike it would maybe be like $600-$700 including most of the parts and the case.

#

the only thing you'd need left is a monitor, keyboard and mouse

#

I would opt in for 16gb of ram 8 isn't enough unless all you do is watch youtube and play clicker games

And you have to also get a motherboard that supports ddr4 ram and a more modern cpu

I'll need to rip off Big Sur from an office Mac for that

slender trellis

That and requires your computer that can carry one or two hard drives or SSDs.

Installing on same drive will ruin your current OS.

fervent granite

oh you mean like microsoft's tool? nah

brave field
#

well not really that either

#

maybe like a bootable version of media creation tool

fervent granite
#

yeah I still don't think so

#

that sort of tool already exists on modern macs' recovery system, you have the option to either download the last compatible version of macos or the latest

#

the closest thing I can think of are the recovery discs they used to include with every system, but they stopped making those a long time ago

brave field
#

hm

#

I figure since they don'

#

t want people installing on non-mac systems, why have the option for people to take the update files and do what they want

#

you need a mac to get the file to make an iso to install on a non-mac system

#

so why not remove the user from the process entirely or lock out the files or something of the sort? Would be easier than a timebomb + CPU model check + UEFI signature check, no?

fervent granite
#

I guess they're betting on people not having issues bad enough that they need those files with their macs?

#

I guess the only other reason would be what you said, that they're not meant for non-mac systems peepoShrug

malwarebytes' main issue is its relatively poor detection rates vs pre-MBAM 4.0

if you want to install it go ahead

crimson spade
jovial tide

go ahead then

#

antivirus is just garbage for your pc that slows it down

and windows antivirus is good enough anyway

crimson spade

it doesn't delete the virus

just quarantine

jovial tide

the way to not get a virus is to have common sense so you dont need an antivirus anyway

windows defender is fine

it wouldn't really delete a virus. it would just quarantine it

Accidentally left my etherium miner running while I was playing BF4, Still managed to pull 120+ fps on ultra. I guess BF4 doesn't use as much VRAM

I personally agree. I feel like curved monitors are only worth it for superwide resolutions.

is 80 to 83 degrees celius going to hurt my cpu

arctic yarrow
#

It's not ideal, but it shouldn't hurt it if it hits that intermittently

hardy geyser
#

its normaly 80 but sometimes it will go up to 82 or 83 for a second

Does anyone here know how to fix NVIDIA recording on the wrong monitor? I tried changing my main display but it still doesn't work. I even tried unplugging my 2nd monitor, restarting my pc and trying that but to no avail. Not sure if im asking in the right channel but I figured it's a tech question so.

Do you have the issue when using other recording software?

I plan on getting six monitors because I've always liked the look of six monitors together with that little black barrier between them all. Makes me feel like a security guy or a cyberguy lol

fervent granite
#

I'm happy with my one external monitor SadChamp

vapid grove
#

I can't picture any workload which would require six monitors. The max I could see for day to day use is three.

fervent granite
#

one monitor per browser tab?

vapid grove
#

I guess so KEKW

Even a third monitor seems kind of superfluous tbh. Main task on one monitor, and then two/three/four windows on the second.
