Anyone can, as long as most of your customers don't complain while they're using them

night timber
#

I mean I would complain if my PSU burns my house down

brave field
#

G3, despite it having a few reports of smoking, is still a better one than some like BQ

night timber
#

oh wait, I just remembered where I actually got that FSP PSU from

#

I got it from one of my dad's old PCs

#

...he built that "old" PC in 2014/2015

#

that PSU is 7 years old

#

should I start worrying thinktate

brave field
#

Diablotek HWMonitor reading kek

#

Maybe not worry, and its still possible this issue has nothing to do with your PSU, but if you're paranoid, a new one won't hurt
7 years is fine for a good unit, but.....
Looking now, its missing so many protections...

night timber
#

but save my dignity

#

I really really wanna hear about a way to know if my PSU is dying before it's too late

#

without playing with electricity of course

brave field
#

if you're able to find any sort of hint in HWiNFO at all regarding the voltages, it could be used to confirm or rule out one possibility

night timber
#

oh boy

#

the motherboard doesn't have voltage sensors

#

only CPU, RAM, GPU etc... have it

#

like what was dell f***ing thinking when they designed this PC

guys can you help with input lag

kindred temple
#

It exists, but very little on metal operation (directly from the device)

#

If youre running 60hz, its at 16-20ms at its worse.

jovial tide
#

i have like 100ms

kindred temple
#

You sure we talkin input lag and not internet lag here?

jovial tide
#

i meaaan... it's in gta. but for real i didn't really get any help from gta chats. on desktop i have little lag, but on gta it's around 100ms

#

so if i could get help here

#

do an internet speed test

#

@jovial tide

kindred temple

its input, not internet.

would be nice for 1TB SATA SSDs to drop to $40 for an hour or two

fervent granite
#

could probably make do with an hdd until they do

brave field
#

Does macOS run decently on one?

#

also, I don't even know where or if I can get AIX and CygWin
but the docs listed them, so I put 'em in there. Guessing they're not actually relevant though.

arctic yarrow
#

Probably an extremely stupid question, but is there a usb 3.1 to internal sata adapter that allows an external ssd to be plugged directly into a motherboard sata port?

#

Oh fuck, it's an m.2 ssd connected to an m.2 to usb 3.1 adapter

#

I could break it down and get an m.2 to sata adapter.

fervent granite
#

except for base model imacs iirc

#

might feel a bit sluggish though depending on your hardware

slender trellis

Macs can run on either AMD, Intel, or Nvidia (discontinued)

kindred temple
fervent granite

macs can still use nvidia egpu's

slender trellis
#

This is a huge problem for Hackintoshers if Mac switches to ARM.

fervent granite
#

Yeah but apple says that it'll continue supporting x86_64 for "years to come"

#

I think the supported nvidia gpu's are the gtx 680 mac edition and some quadro model

slender trellis
#

Mac is way behind when it comes to graphic cards

balmy kiln
#

ah, my kinda place

#

I remember someone mentioned to me once that windows doesn't boot well on a hard drive. I've found that my computer takes ass ever to turn itself on and I often have to wait six to ten minutes after the boot screen for the computer's local profile sign-on screen to appear. How can/do I get Windows to boot on a M.2 / SSD when I pick one up eventually? Will it change the atrocious wait time since my disc often runs on 100% usage for about 5 minutes after startup?

fervent granite
fervent granite
#

that is of course if your pc can use m2/nvme drives, a regular ssd shouldn't be a problem but you'll be surprised how big of a difference it makes

#

you could also try to minimise what windows is loads up on startup

balmy kiln
#

I have two M.2 slots on my mobo and four ssd slots on the back of the case

#

I just wanna figure out how to cut the 100% disc usage because it slows my computer to a near halt upon loading, and I didn't pay $2600 and spend since October building this thing just to wait fifteen minutes for it to actually work

#

then again, I have one 2TB seagate HDD, and it has over 1.5TB of games and other files on it

#

Will purchasing more storage make a difference?

fervent granite
#

having more storage shouldn't affect performance

balmy kiln
#

sad. I really gotta figure out the issue then. I also have to figure out why half the time my 9pin usb header doesn't work

#

half the time I turn on my computer with my corsair lighting node plugged into the mobo, the post screen tells me I've got a usb over current status, then it shuts itself off. Only way to use the PC is to jiggle the sata cables, let them hang loose, then hope it turns on next time

#

it's unplugged rn tho cuz I couldn't be assed. I just wanted to use my brand new PSU I got today

fervent granite
#

faulty cables maybe?

#

I'm not familiar with custom builds or even tower pc's in general as I've mostly stuck to laptops, the last pc I worked on was an old vista-era prebuilt kek

balmy kiln
#

entirely possible, I bought a new lighting node that came bundled with some corsair light strips, it hasn't shipped yet though and I bought it on the 6th

#

I'm only familiar enough to manage to get by

#

but my current PC looks fucking killer

#

I plan on buying a ROG Ryujin and slowly phasing all my computer parts out to be ASUS and Corsair only

#

To accomplish that, I must buy two new RAM sticks, a new AIO, and a new keyboard

hushed umbra
#

Anyone got an idea of what bitrate should I capture my gameplay footage at?
Capture res being 1920 x 1080
Capture frame rate being 60

Just need to make sure the footage isnt grainy

brave field
#

How are you encoding the footage?

#

I think you can just about get the same quality from AV1 at half the bitrate of AVC

hushed umbra
#

ok hold on, I'll just post my settings

#

GPU encoding

#

current bitrate is at 10K

#

but gets a bit grainy when there's a lot happening on screen

brave field
#

You're recording and not streaming?

hushed umbra
#

yes I stream too but recording mainly, the problem's there in both cases

#

oh sorry

#

hold on

#

I recorded Valheim and the grainy footage problem didnt arise but with DMC its getting crazy

#

with all the effects on screen

brave field
#

For recording, you should be able to get better without having to mess with bitrate or any other settings just by swapping your current encoder for your GPU's HEVC encoder, or the AV1 one if you have an RTX GPU

#

might also say h265

hushed umbra
#

I have it on GPU encoding the bitrate is the problem, dont know how much I should raise it by

#

for 1920x1080

brave field
#

I think I've missed something

#

You only have that ONE Nvidia option for encoding? No others that use your GPU?
Its not normal to only have that one option, and that one isn't great for recording at all, but is fine for streams

wispy vector
#

All the stuff in this channel is so confusing

#

All I see is GPU NWG JXS SJC SIX and stuff like that

hushed umbra
#

yup only one on my system with 1660Ti, might have more options on my RTX 2060 system but I would like to record on the 1660Ti system

The encoders available are
stream encoder, default
nvidia h.264
x264

#

I am using the nvidia one

brave field
#

wow, that's strange. Update OBS if you can, there should be more options, and the missing HEVC one should be MUCH better than the h.264 option that's there.

#

try 20000 or 25000 for your recording bitrate then, and see if that looks better.

hushed umbra

What the fuck storytime:
The forest caused all my games to crash on PS4 and the fix was reformatting my extended hard-drive and forgetting about playing The forest.

fervent granite
#

What the fuck storytime:
years ago I had to install java to play an unblocked version of minecraft. I don't know if it was the jar executable or if I downloaded a rogue software, but whatever it was it literally killed my pc's performance KEKW

brave field
#

something something story:
Hours ago I tried to install macOS twice and died

fervent granite
#

did you respawn at least?

brave field
#

nah, I'm super dead and even though I removed all the files I've worked with, I still have 9GB less than I had before

fervent granite
#

wait how does that work?

#

was it on a vm or on actual hardware?

brave field
#

A virtualbox VM, of course on my legitimate mac hardware (I would never break Apple ToS) I own

#

9Gb less on the host after deleting all the VM's files

fervent granite
#

That's... really weird but then again getting macos to run on virtualbox is a pain, I barely got mavericks to run on it a few years back

brave field
#

The first time I got it to actually finish the install and boot, it was okay

#

I mean, aside from no audio, no ethernet, scrolling being reversed, horrendously slow everything, and a bucketload of resolution issues

#

changed nothing, reinstalled, and no work

#

something about the network adapter makes it die

fervent granite
#

scrolling being reversed
this is actually a feature pepeLaughYou

#

it's this setting right here:

brave field
#

I toggled that, reversed regardless 😦

fervent granite
#

for some reason this setting applies to the mouse AND trackpad

#

maybe try qemu?

brave field
#

I hate installing things

#

maybe someday

#

The first macos VM install was so difficult to do

#

why is there DRM on top of the DRM

#

timebomb in the installer? checks for the UEFI name, CPU name, board name? begging me to use internet?

#

oh, and not allowing people to get an installer without having a functioning mac. Sucks being someone with only one macbook, I guess

fervent granite
#

not to mention the ridiculous size of the os itself

kindred temple
#

how small can you make a linux distro?

brave field
#

Puppy Linux and DSL can run in CPU cache

kindred temple
#

like, how much of the kernel can i strip before it basically wont boot

brave field
#

@fervent granite I'm never doing this again

#

never

#

takes so long to install

fervent granite
#

my big sure iso is fucking 12.00 gb big

brave field
#

just have to add macOS checks in my python scripts

kindred temple
#

smaller than a windows

fervent granite
#

Right? that even puts windows to shame

brave field
#

I was scrolling through PyPi and some module's description mentioned "Oh, this thing works in Windows, Solus, FreeBSD, Linux, and Android, but has the side effect of wiping someone's drive on macOS if you don't use this parameter"

#

but no way of testing if it works on macOS

#

not after that experience

#

macOS on a VM doesn't exist

kindred temple
#

just 2 years of not many dll inserts

fervent granite
kindred temple
#

And i think mac has pretty much everything itll need in its lifecycle in that 12 gig

fervent granite
#

probably yeah, I mean the os works pretty much out of the box with all the apps it includes

#

whereas windows needs a few apps to become usable and then there's arch that's a fucking 1 year old that needs you to install everything for it

brave field
#

fair, though I really wonder how much of that 12gb goes towards making the OS work well

#

3.8gb for Windows' install.wim, but you can toss GIMP, 7zip, and VLC in there under 1gb

kindred temple
#

I think windows is pretty compressed

brave field
#

I guess it doesn't really matter because Puppy Linux is the best and everyone should use it because its both usable and tiny

#

Why would you use a slow SSD for your OS when you can run it all in CPU cache and ram? Why bother?

#

All other OSes are dead (unless you need actual third-party software support).

kindred temple
#

Can you even run steam in puppy?

fervent granite
brave field
#

Steam in Puppy kinda exists

fervent granite
brave field
#

your finder looks so usable

#

You have the file path displayed at the top

#

the table setup actually shows useful info like modify date and size

#

even if the VM worked not having that was frustrating me

fervent granite
#

I took a while to get it setup but using stock finder was just horrible, especially having used windows for so long

#

I literally had to google directories because I never knew where I was in the system

#

and the fact that "macintosh hd" is hidden by default didn't help much either SadChamp

brave field
#

I hadn't felt that helpless before

#

FreeBSD without a desktop environment? fine

#

Trying to do anything other than open Safari on macOS was a pain though

fervent granite
#

You could've tried to play a game of chess kek

brave field
#

The whole point of a file explorer having a GUI is to make it easy to dig around and find files

#

but you can't find files because they're both hidden and in paths that are hidden

#

and no amount of "get info" will ever give you relevant info

fervent granite
#

at least not as nice as windows's file info pane is

brave field
#

And I prefer the minesweeper that comes with Xubuntu over macOS chess WeirdChamp

fervent granite
#

apparently chess is considered a "protected application" so you have to through a few hoops to delete it Pepega

brave field
#

yikes apple, you're starting to get into the Onedrive and Skype UWP territory with that one

#

YourPhone.exe too

fervent granite
#

yourphone legit is useless to anyone with an ios device, microsoft should let you delete it

brave field
#

"We know you won't use this, but we're going to embed it as deep into the OS as possible"

#

useless on ios and Google is already trying their hardest to replace all of its features for Android using Chrome itself

fervent granite
#

and google is doing a good job at it?

brave field
#

of course

#

Every time Microsoft tries something, there's a hundred alternatives that work better at the cost of making you install them

#

Firefox has plenty of features yourphone has, KDE connect too

#

they seem convenient but I'm put off by how they're set up

#

Google is.. well, Google. Microsoft's can't be uninstalled, which is a red flag. I don't use KDE daily, Mozilla's things are cool but I don't really use their products often enough

fervent granite
#

for me I just don't trust microsoft with keeping my data safe if I were to use yourphone

#

especially considering how great of a job they do in handling users' privacy on windows /s

brave field
#

ahh yes

#

highest level enterprise solutions get the option to send just minimal data to Microsoft on an hourly basis

#

I don't trust Microsoft or Google, same

#

probably unfounded skepticism sometimes, but if a product makes you fight to opt-out of data sharing, I want out. If that fight takes more than 4 minutes, I'm gone.

fervent granite
#

I have just a tiny bit more confidence in google as their cloud services are actually quite good, but yeah unfounded skepticism definitely describes me

#

it's why I was so hesitant to use passwd managers for so long, and even now I haven't completely migrated all my logins to bitwarden

brave field
#

closed-source password managers "powered by state of the art cloud services" peepoChrist

#

could never go with one that has mass appeal, seems far too risky

#

good target for someone malicious and the end user has no control over what is saved, where its saved, and how? euuurgh

fervent granite
#

ironically, seeing all of lastpass's adverts drove me away from it, and that as well

brave field
#

really sucks that your options seem to always come down to:
Use google/microsoft, but your info is getting sold
Use random company that suddenly is loved by everyone and is profitable and risk it getting compromised
Use your own solution and have no redundancy

#

Then when there's something that seems like an exception like ProtonVPN/mail, bitwarden, or others, now I feel the need to search for the catch

fervent granite
#

I guess you just have to bite the bullet at some point

#

with apple for example I've got my phone connected to them, my mac, my ipad and my watch, and there's really no way around that

brave field
#

sadly so

#

Everyone gets tied that ONE big company ecosystem in some way or another, only way to at least have something be reliable and not lack useful features

#

Google, Microsoft, Apple, I guess Facebook has enough different services to count

fervent granite
#

but man does facebook feels ancient now, I mean at least google and microsoft provide something other than consumer products

#

facebook has basically nothing and has somehow survived the test of time

kindred temple
#

and yes, this include the closed source ones like NordPass and LastPass.

literally took me 5m to set up shop and import to bitwarden from LastPass

#

I've been thinking of rigging up my house with whole home ethernet, utilizing the existing coax entries for it. I have everything figured out except where to place the main switch. Should I place the switch inside the room where my cable modem is located, or should I do an outside PoE solution? The modem is located in the far corner basement of the house.

#

To clarify, I'd be running the ethernet down the same paths as the coax, and hooking it up to a combo coax-ethernet wall plate like this:

#

I've already attempted a MoCA type solution and failed, apparently Comcast doesn't like MoCA if I'm not wasting money on their shitty rental.

First problem: this isn't a gta chat. Second problem: it's against discord's ToS to discuss glitches in detail.

arctic yarrow
#

So, going back to my previous question, is it better to set up my centralized network switch near my modem, or utilize a weatherproof PoE switch mounted outside?

brave field
#

What benefits are there to the outdoor solution?

arctic yarrow
#

It's in a more centralized spot

#

If I were to go with the indoor solution, the ethernet would have to all be run from a corner of the house

brave field
#

I'd prefer indoor + unmanaged switch if needed

#

unless its ACTUAL waterproofing, not IP67 or the like

arctic yarrow
#

Gotcha, I guess it's better to have it easily accessed inside

#

Probably a good idea to have a stud-mounted rack

@brave field What kind of strategy should i do to make a PFSense box?

trail totem
#

Does anyone here know how to fix a weird wifi issue?

kindred temple
#

Switch to lan

trail totem
#

Cant

#

Dont have an ethernet cable long enough and its slower for some reason

brave field
#

Can you describe your issue?

trail totem
#

So basically, im able to use my wifi just fine but overtime my wifi just dies and my pc automatically disconnects from the internet itself and decides to not want to connect.
My PC keeps saying it cant connect to my wifi but it recognises that it's there.
At this point, I'm thinking it's my wifi card itself that's the issue but its able to connect to my hotspot just fine so I dont really know what to.
I've moved the wifi card to another slot, flushed out my dns, resetted my network etc but it doesnt want to seem to work

#

This issue kind of happened after a windows update so I dont know if the update itself has fucked it or it's another issue but I dont really know. All I know is that my card doesnt want to let my wifi through

brave field
#

Windows update includes driver updates if the setting isn't manually turned off, its possible they gave you a trash version. Try updating it through device manager, and then the manufacturer's own website.

#

Your hotspot is stable, but your home connection is not. Is there a large difference in how the PC connects to each, maybe the hotspot being 2.4ghz wifi and the home one being 5ghz, or both with the same SSID?

trail totem
#

With the drivers, it says the best drivers are already installed

#

And I'm assuming my home connection is stable because every other device is working perfectly fine

brave field
#

Anything on the adapter's manufacturer's site? Both the one who distributed it and the one who made the actual adapter and its PCB

trail totem
#

I'll check now

#

Right I've gone onto the website and I've downloaded a driver for them manually just to see if that is the issue

#

I dont know what to do with the files and where to put them but here we are

brave field
#

Download an iso for a decent-looking Linux distro too while that's happening. Can eliminate Windows + drivers being the issue by not using Windows or that driver entirely, with a live USB

#

er, site should have instructions on how to install the driver you need

trail totem
#

Im not gonna lie i have no idea where im looking lmao

#

this website is confusing me out

brave field
#

send screenshot

#

man, that website

trail totem
#

Yeah sorry, couldn't send a ss in here

#

And yeah, the website is confusing as fuck

brave field
#

well, that's unofficial

trail totem
#

Should I uninstall the thing i downloaded the

#

n

brave field
#

Ah wait, they just give you the .inf files, no executables

#

you need to install the driver manually in device manager

trail totem
#

Okay

#

It still says the best drivers are already installed

brave field
#

Don't choose to search online for a driver, choose to manually install the driver from a file or disc

#

bottom one

trail totem
#

Yeah ive installed the drivers

brave field
#

Is it behaving any better or will you have to wait a while?

trail totem
#

Its still not allowing me to connect to my wifi

#

should i restart my pc quickly and see if that fixes things?

brave field
#

Yes.

#

Do you have another computer or an Android device?

trail totem
#

Just an android device

brave field
#

Download a Xubuntu (better compatibility) or Puppy linux (much smaller) iso and RUFUS, and transfer both to your PC using a USB cable if its still not working, then load up the ISO in RUFUS, make a bootable USB, and then boot into the USB when you next restart your PC and choose "Try Xubuntu/puppy"

#

Testing in another OS can be useful for finding if the issue is the card coincidentally deciding to die around the same time as that update, or if the issue really is just Windows or a driver

trail totem
#

Okay will do

#

Is it on the app store or just a website?

brave field
#

website

brave field
#

@fervent granite You know it ✅. Small, fast, reliable. Quickest way to boot into something non-Windows

trail totem
#

Okay so I have both rufus and xubuntu installed

#

And they are both transferred into my oc

brave field
#

You have a USB drive?

trail totem
#

Nope

brave field
#

Why did I rely on an edit, and send it in such a bad order?
Erm, Xubuntu and Rufus can just be deleted then, useless without something to boot from

#

Not really sure what else to try if things work on other devices and work on other networks. Unless your modem/router's control panel have something set specifically for your PC that's messing with things, it can only really be the driver or the windows update

#

If all else fails, try rolling back the windows update. Its the least safe option, though.

fervent granite
#

isn't there a way to insall linux within windows?

brave field
#

WSL/2, yeah, but you're still running Windows. WSL1 is more a compatibility layer than anything, WSL2 might be able to do something, but I've got no idea where you'd even start getting WSL2 to handle the driver for the whole OS

fervent granite
#

pretty sure that'd be a huge security hole if you could access windows drivers from wsl

brave field
#

I think those parts of WSL2 are fully virtualized too, so passthrough might be weird

trail totem
#

Oh well, it is what it is
Thanks for the help though, been more useful than others

Tl:dr
If u have an old cpu and u wanna upgrade gpu then buy AMD

kindred temple
#

FX users rejoice!

#

#

But for real, this is not so much of a suprise for me, idk why

#

Because imho AMD drivers are seem to be geared for raw performance rather than features

jovial tide

who tf is still on fx though

#

Yall should at least be on 1st gen ryzen i cant imagine gaming on fx lol

Old intel cpus age really well though

kindred temple
jovial tide

lol

#

stuff like a 6700k/7700k still perform pretty well nowdays

#

i just feel bad for anyone who bought a high end fx cpu

brave field
#

@cold elbow this is stupid

#

Nvidia and AMD should both cut all their telemetry, attempt to make ALL relevant APIs more performant, and just have things work well

#

AMD GPUs are terrible at Opengl and DX9/10, a bit slow in DX11, with 0 decent compute stack
Nvidia GPUs are a bit subpar at DX12/VK, and terrible for Metal

kindred temple
#

tough life out there when everyone is basically chokeslammed by doubleclick

#

but yeah, to be honest

#

consensual telemetry that exist right now is pretty much just "not much"

brave field
#

Its appalling AMD has so many issues and their past 5 updates have just been making the AMD Link phone app slightly faster

#

And Nvidia could kill NVDriverSlimmer and NV Debloat easily by reverting their new account requirement despite all of GFE's features working beforehand, and cutting down on the 6-7 constant Nvidia processes filling up task manager

jovial tide
#

i hate all the geforce stuff constantly eating up my ram

kindred temple
#

I like most of them but the main GFE app is a bog

jovial tide
#

i have 32 so it isnt really a problem but for someone with 16 or lower all of that adds up quickl

brave field
#

Also, AMD should make Radeon Software optional, like GFE

jovial tide
#

was doing work and chrome was using 6 gigs of ram lol

brave field
#

Though, I give them credit for it being more useful than GFE

#

Everything GFE offers is done better in an open-source alternative

kindred temple
brave field
#

#

There isn't a universal equivalent for Ansel, alright

kindred temple

jovial tide
#

i died inside when i saw that linus video of a 3080 and 10900k in the h510 unrelated but just thought about it

brave field
#

Why isn't OBS good enough? Its only drawback is that you have to spend 4-5 seconds setting it up, no?

jovial tide
#

my case has poor airflow but compared to the h510 its a mesh airflow case

kindred temple
brave field
#

There's more to customize, its lighter than GFE, its not connected to software that occasionally tries to mess with your settings without your permission, only issue is its replay buffer not having the option to save to disk

kindred temple
#

now to be fair

#

i use basic OBS for my stream, nothing can touch it from both teams even without any config.

#

OBS basically runs away with it in that use case

kindred temple

You have both the SATA data and the SATA power connected to it?

Does it spin up at all when plugged in?

#

AFAIK there's nothing public that causes irreparable hardware damage. Most are just annoying, ransomware, or things that nuke your OS

#

If you want to be "safe," use a live USB and boot into something non-windows and non-macos or wipe it from an installer/recovery usb

but nothing should automatically run just from you plugging in that drive, usually

fervent granite
#

but on the topic of viruses nuking your drive is probably the best way to kill a virus

that's what I do anyway, I could try to clean my system using tools like hitman or checking the registry for sus keys but I get really paranoid with that stuff

brave field
#

er, you have more than one SATA data cable, yes?

fully connect the drive that works and turn the PC on, and wait for your OS to load and all
leave SATA power in the new drive

When your OS is loaded, steal the SATA data from the disc drive

or you can remove it from the disc one beforehand, either

#

just make sure you're connecting the data one to the new drive after things have loaded up as normal

that'll avoid any chance of it booting into an OS on the new drive and will let you wipe it clean

Then you're waiting until your OS loads and all, and THEN swapping the sata data in the disc drive with the drive that does not work, which should make that drive be recognized by the OS, which will not show this error because its already loaded, yes?

#

my lack of ability to explain and poor english hurts Sadge

fervent granite

brave field
#

Revert to a fully working state, move sata power (large one) from disc drive to new hard drive, remove the sata data from the disc drive and let it just hang, disconnected, turn the PC on, let windows or whatever you use load.
Then connect the loose end of the sata data cable to the new drive with the PC still on, and you should get some sort of notification or something if your OS is able to detect the drive. If you're using windows, open up disk management if you don't get the notification and see if a new drive is there

#

oh uh, you have them in? yeah

#

you can use multiple drives, you just have to be sure it boots to the working one and not the one that isn't working well

#

great

#

use both then

#

You use windows, yes?

fervent granite
#

not non-working means it's working?

brave field
#

Press start, type in "DISK MAN," press enter

#

You should see that weird drive in there now

#

Might be called "Disk 1"

#

normal, you're looking for second disk

#

those to the right are partitions, and there are multiple per disk usually

#

You able to send a screenshot?

#

Win+Shift+S?

fervent granite
#

You can deduce which drive you want to wipe by comparing the disk sizes

brave field
#

Those should just be partitions of one disk, not multiple disks. Partitions are listed horizontally, disks vertically

fervent granite
#

I think diskpart would've been easier, it would've listed the disks rather than the partitions, then you can just select the entire disk to clean

brave field
#

You right, John

#

b-but... GUIs

#

Someone at Microsoft spent hours on that

#

little colored bars, a table...

#

That's disgusting, wow. Disk 1 has your active OS and disk 0 doesn't

#

Alright, you can right click each of these in red and delete partition

#

Repeat until this top row is all listed as unallocated with the black bar

#

do not touch the second row where it says "Disk 1"

fervent granite
#

he's just saying he doesn't it like it when the drive windows is installed on isn't listed as drive 0

brave field
#

just a small oddity, I'd expect Microsoft to always make the active OS be disk 0 regardless of the sata port number, just seems like a MS thing

delete volume, yes

you can't?

brave field
#

agh, I guess it is time for DISKPART then

#

sometimes you can't, yup

fervent granite
brave field
#

list disk

#

Disk 0 should be roughly 1.5TB under size, yeah?

#

select disk 0

#

clean

#

convert gpt

#

now return to disk manager, you could make a partition here but doing that is wack

#

Right click it, select "new simple volume"

#

Then you get a menu with some options that aren't hugely important, press next once or twice and when asked just set a name and a drive letter you like and make sure the dropdown with formats is set to NTFS

#

By default, the volume size is all the unallocated space, so unless you want something more advanced, leave it

fervent granite
#

see that? 4 simple commands was all it took

You can

Ever just want to kill yourself when there is so documentation for a library used inside a bigger library you are using

So you end up decompiling a jar and reading and understading someone elses code for hours of your life

Yes

It is

spring condor

good beginner language. if you know C++, then python is a cakewalk

spring condor

Go to python's official documentation. It's actually pretty good to start out

brave field
#

Python is awesome

#

Just wish I could make OS-native executables out of it to make sending things to people a bit easier

#

@kindred temple just a normal partition, have vbox and vdi/vhd in there. No nested virtual disk or custom mount point or anything

kindred plaza
rapid lake
#

I personally went ahead and learned the language itself first by making a couple games through youtube tutorials, then began making simple stuff with my bot

#

It's definitely better that you learn the language first then the discord.py library

strong saffron
#

d.py is a good way to become familiar with Python though, after you've learned the basics. Its documentation is fantastic

brave field
#

yes

#

Plenty of games load quickly on a regular 7200RPM though, you may not really need a full 1tb SSD initially

#

No game that benefits hugely from an SSD runs well on the HD 4600

#

If you're mainly looking to play games, you need a GPU ASAP

#

What about that 970 you mentioned yesterday?

#

I thought yours was the full-size Pavilion hpe?

#

o

#

Low-profile only is sorta a death sentence for games unless you're on AM4. Best you can get is a 1650 iirc, and that model happens to cost almost twice as much as a normal 1650 when not in a silicon and production shortage

#

2gb of what?

#

Giving your HD 4600 2gb of VRAM through UMA?

#

If you already own it, its faster than your HD 4600, but don't spend any money on it

#

Mayyyybe I'd spend money if it was $15 or less

#

model?

#

Could be used for something

#

maybe VM passthrough if you want to try that

#

worse than the 4600 for games though, yes. Looks like an ATi card

#

$150 MSRP, should be cheaper since the card is generally a letdown already and used options before the shortage were much better at $50 less

#

go for it

#

There's demand for overpriced products

You need to remove two of those covers

arctic yarrow
#

Electricity is relatively cheap where I'm at, would it be a bad idea to leave my rig mining crypto while I'm not using it?

kindred temple
#

depends on how good your PSU is and how fit is your pc rn

arctic yarrow
#

Well, I'm using an rtx 2070 super on an I7-7700k, and have a 1kw evga psu

#

Currently, my pc is in excellent shape, minus a thin layer of dust on the intake mesh.

kindred temple

Oboy, turing

Honestly, for the fuck of it,sure.

arctic yarrow
#

RN I seem to be hitting 37 MH/s

kindred temple
#

1080Ti average hash on ETH is 40.

#

So its just ya average turing hash, not so good compared to pascal.

arctic yarrow
#

Oh, doing bitcoin rn. Would I be better off doing etherium?

kindred temple
#

BTC is a lost cause, youll be shredded by those with ASICs long before you make a profit.

arctic yarrow
#

gotcha, how would you recommend I go about eth mining then?

kindred temple
#

On turing, n o omegalul

brave field
#

Mining BTC on a GPU would take >100 years at current difficulty to make half a penny in USD

kindred temple
#

^

#

ASIC really spiked the shit out of btc mining, you better off buying btc.

brave field
#

If you're okay researching, find a coin you like and a pool you like, and try a few different mining programs to see which is most efficient for you. Else, you can try something like NiceHash if you really don't want to do any work

kindred temple
#

nicehash

brave field
kindred temple
#

Thats like rooting for haas this F1 season PepeLaugh

arctic yarrow
#

I can cash out to my wallet when it hits 50 cents, and this is after doing it for a few hours today

brave field
#

nicehash doesn't mine BTC on PC hardware ever, you can see the algo in the console window the mining plugin opens

#

kinda hate that its like that, doesn't make it clear which algo you DO use from the get-go and not everyone knows daggerhashimoto=ethash, plus you lose on any othe price gains a smaller coin would have since they trade it out for BTC on the user's side instantly

arctic yarrow
#

oh gotcha

#

so I'm not technically mining btc, but I'm being paid in btc to mine eth

kindred temple
#

Im glad we can have a very peaceful btc talk

#

Instead of savagely saying we are killing GPUs, or something dumb.

arctic yarrow
#

I'm very ignorant about crypto and need to learn it.

brave field
#

not exactly eth, just whatever nhm thinks is most efficient on your GPU with its trash benchmarking system

arctic yarrow
#

My understanding is mining is easier on the gpu than gaming.

#

Of course, I may be wrong

brave field
#

It is if done right, on all but fans and VRAM, if G6X

#

No constant thermal cycling, and you can be efficient at much lower power use and lower core clock

arctic yarrow
#

So nicehash is not exactly the most optimal way of mining crypto based on what you've said @brave field ?

brave field
#

Its by far the easiest way to get into it but it being the most optimal way depends on your own setup

#

some pools only let you payout once you have $100+

arctic yarrow
#

So I have an advantage of being able to payout at around 50-60 cents with this pool.

brave field
#

and not having to hope you can find an exchange that both carries the coin you mine and isn't ready to pull an exit scam

arctic yarrow
#

Gotcha

#

I'm still a bit upset with myself for formatting the hard drive I had 10 btc on back in 2012.

brave field
#

@kindred temple Why no like nicehash?

#

10btc hm

#

The guy who paid 10,000 for a pizza is probably crying right now

kindred temple
brave field
#

Which drama specifically?

#

The constant nonsense they have? Getting hacked, PhoenixMiner lies, its terrible community?

arctic yarrow
#

No, he's still alive and kicking

#

Well, going by that same logic, I formatted a hard drive with 10 btc on it back in 2012. I woulda had 600k today had I kept it

#

I look back on it and think "oof". But it's in the past, and all I can do is move forward.

brave field
#

Thanks to KYC, some countries do have age requirements

arctic yarrow

brave field

arctic yarrow
#

What's the odds BTC will crash? or is it so scarce the price is going to continue to increase?

brave field
#

100% odds

#

All currencies go through a cycle

arctic yarrow
#

Sorry, to clarify, what are the odds BTC will crash and remain at a low?

brave field
#

Not really sure

#

its approaching something huge though

#

There is 21mil total BTC, and nearly 19mil is mined

#

nobody really knows if the price will skyrocket, plummet, or something else

arctic yarrow
#

the only thing everyone knows is huge shit is gonna happen when it gets there.

brave field
#

mining won't stop since it will still be used for transactions, but something interesting is near

#

yeah

arctic yarrow
#

Imagine if btc jumps to 1 billion tho.

#

Just a fun thought

brave field
#

I'm worried about the effect that would have on exchanges and BTC "ATMs"

#

ETH and ADA and XMR are all alternatives that approach things a bit differently, but pretty much every large... anything regarding cryptocurrency is tied to BTC in a way, because that's just what gets used by exchanges and investors who won't research anything worth less than it

#

Will it increase ETH fees even further? Will companies go for exit scams in countries they're able to? Will Litecoin and ETH be the new "standards?"

arctic yarrow
#

Ya, that would fuck with everything crypto related.

kindred temple
#

i thought thats obv enough PepeLaugh

brave field
#

You're right Claire

#

but... its still good to get an extremely basic understanding on for 2-3 days imo, just to have it autoconfig the mining programs, have one tweak their hardware, see a wallet address and do a first transfer

#

don't use it long term , don't keep big bucks in there, and doubly don't if you're going to invest money into hardware for it. Nicehash does have some serious issues, and while plenty of people at home use them, their issues are still worrisome.

arctic yarrow
#

Understood, I'll keep it going, get the payout, then maybe transfer to another wallet and look for another option.

kindred temple
#

but... its still good to get an extremely basic understanding on for 2-3 days imo
same thing that you can do by learning how to make your own wallet and start mining on a correct client.

#

youre giving yourself too much time with 2-3 days, the more likely case is 24-28h, see the little return
