I've had a carbon black Xbox series one controller but now it is faulting, the wireless doesn't stay connected and some buttons are beginning to stick. What non Microsoft options are on par with or better than Xbox and works with steam?

Almost anything works with Steam Input, after you map it the first time. If you want maximum compatibility, a third party 360/One/Series controller. If you don't mind remapping sometimes or having to use a cable, a number of games use the Dualsense's features. Switch Pro is awesome in the hands if you like Xbox controllers, though note the triggers are buttons and not potentiometers. Also great battery life and decently durable
