The two relevant CPU sockets for AMD are AM4 and AM5. Your motherboard is probably DDR4 (your RAM generation needs to be DDR4) so upgrading to a CPU which uses AM5 will also require a RAM upgrade to DDR5 which provides better speeds, and generally the mobo will give you more upgradability for the next few years. If you have an intel CPU older than like 3-4 years I’d consider upgrading to AM5, otherwise if it’s newer than that you’re probably wasting your money for little performance boost since you’re (I’m assuming) bottlenecked by your GPU

The AM4 CPUs still hold up especially the higher end Ryzen 7, but if your have a 12-14th gen intel then it’s not gonna make much of a difference

If you’re on a really old CPU (10th gen or older) and not on a budget, I’d make the move to AM5 if your GPU would benefit from a more powerful CPU and a better, faster RAM

If on a budget and you don’t wanna have to pay for new RAM too, I’d either just hold off for now or get AM4 and like a 7800x3D which can handle most if not all current gen GPUs
