An Online UPS outputs power from the battery at all times and keeps charging it, as opposed to offline or line interactive UPS which change to the battery only when the power goes out with a slight delay between the power going out and the battery kicking in

That delay can cause components to turn off momentarily which defeats the whole purpose of a UPS, and can also damage components
