have u looked at MT3608?

#

most of them don't have a soldered port but you could get one of these

#

into one of these (the female variant)

#

and then the last one is soldered to the booster

#

the good thing about MT3608 is the variable resistor that lets you adjust the output voltage hmmmge

#

i burned a couple of them and also ruined a usb cable trying to pry it open to get the wires i need to solder them to the booster but in the end it worked out alright

#

needed that to power a computer fan from usb and as u know computer fans use 12v

#

though it was too loud at 12 but i was able to bring it down to 8-9 thanks to the variable resistor

@lapis haven The original microUSB version. I have a boost converter with USB-A out, pretty much a USB port on a PCB with a + and - terminal. The USB-A is outputting super low amperage. The TP4056 works fine otherwise, I think

#

What I'm doing is already stupid though, I guess. An 18650 battery at 4.2v outputting 5v via the boost converter connected to the TP4056, being fed into a microcontroller that converts the 5v back to 3.3v. Just don't want to spend the money and a week waiting on an LDO or something similar

#

The TP4056 doesn't do any converting on the output side, only converting inputs from some 3-6v (microusb/usbc/+ and - next to the port) down to whatever the 18650 needs to start charging.

are you using a single cell for this whole circuit?

lapis haven
#

1 - are you using a single cell battery? if so, you should use more than 1, I'd say 3 or 2 as bare minimum, in parallel.

#

2 - what is the end consumer? i mean is it an arduino?
3 - make sure the usb cable connected from the converter to the microcontroller is not too long.

#

you just made it so complicated imho, but you said you dont want to buy something else. it can be simpler like using a powerbank module, so both the charger module and the boost conv. could be integrated in one package.

#

also, the switch should be here instead imo, because even if there is no load connected to the module, it still draws afew mili-amps from the battery, secretly draining the battery:

no! from satellite providers which also provided internet access in the past (like Eutelsat) ,basically someone from another country for example started to download a file, the satellite would propagate the data at the user in a way that if any other user had a satellite dish and one of these cards, could also grab a copy of the same file.

brave field
#

@lapis haven Thanks so much. 😃 I had the switch there because the TP4056 supposedly has an undercharge protection IC (the rightmost small black one on the PCB?), and with load sharing, I was told there was risk of it instead overcharging because the load would tell the module that the cell isn't full yet. End consumer is the chip at the bottom that consumes 3.3v. Do you know of a powerbank that outputs the 3.3v directly? Seems it would be easier to just replace the USB-A board with an LDO and keep the rest of the circuit, no?

#

one cell, yes. I have others, but no holder, and I feel weird soldering directly onto a battery's terminals. Heat concern

cold elbow
#

Why not buy a battery charger

brave field
#

avoiding spending, limited time, I'd end up throwing out pretty much every part I have for the project. The solar panel also doesn't output a stable 5v into a powerbank without some sort of extra board to do that

lapis haven
# brave field <@994884636989730946> Thanks so much. 😃 I had the switch there because the TP4...

yes! I meant that protection circuit, which uses battery power even when theres no load. when you dont use the controller, you just turn the switch off, no need to worry about undercharge of the battery anyway, you could say its a better way to make sure the battery wont undercharge, instead of relying on the circuit.

about the microcontroller board, what board is it?... does it need only 3.3v? then why are you using the boost converter? monkaHmm you could use only the charger module's output directly connected to the m.controller. I think the charger module also regulates the output of the cell so the boost converter seems to be completely redundant.

lapis haven
brave field
#

ESP32 devkit1, it has an onboard 5v to 3.3v for its USB port and VIN pin. The board itself runs on 3.3v, but tolerates 2.8 to 3.5v or so. The TP4056 out pins output the battery's voltage directly, and the battery being 3.8v or the 4.2v it outputs when full is high enough to fry the board. The boost converter accepts any voltage the battery outputs and turns it into a stable 5v, so the onboard microcontroller regulator can convert it back down. Hugely inefficient

lapis haven
#

with your current setup, does the microcontroller even work? or it doesnt turn on?

brave field
#

it turns on and works. Just drains really fast, low amperage, and I'm taking that fire risk

no problem man, that is exactly what you need, input is from 2.7v-11v and output can be set from 2.5v-8v, fixed, while input can be lower or higher, perfect for the cell battery which changes from 4.2v at full state to around ~2.9 at low state
I know your goal was to not spend money but, its the only way.

so glad to hear AMD is moving from PGA to LGA

#

I was about to start buying the parts i needed for my build, I think i should wait and see what the new 7000 series are gonna offer, then I'll decide.

brave field
#

I'll miss it. Return policy is much nicer on the CPU end than the board end.

snow rover
#

so what's the benefit

#

are people actually bending so many pins it's an issue

#

not to mention how hard the socket pins are to fix

brave field
#

you can pull PGA CPUs straight out of the socket while removing the cooler, depending on how the mounting system is

snow rover
#

funny i just took my cpu cooler off

#

had the pc running for a while so it was still warm

#

wiggle it side to side and it came right off

brave field
#

AMD's allows for your shiny new 5950X to have bent pins day 1, while your cheapo $60 board survives it all. I think there's some minor science thing that lets LGA CPUs draw a bit more power somehow too. Secure PGA mounting isn't impossible or anything though. They could just use a door on top like Intel does

snow rover
#

not like intel's mounting system is even good lol

lapis haven
brave field
#

no source provided, take with grain. I recall it saying they have the capacity to, but don't require it or anything.

#

Pins are smaller though, so there's maybe some space/heat efficiency there? They already neglect PGA for their top end CPUs for... some reason.

lapis haven
#

PGA is the inverted version of LGA imo

#

I don't think that'll be too obvious, i mean the power consumption. not sure though, just by imagining how the 2 type contact the cpu in my mind, they dont seem to be much different.

#

considering AMD has always been paying much attention to power optimization, this decision could falsify that if the power consumption thing is really true.

Stupid question but can you convert digital units to physical?

supple walrus

Well

#

Kinda

#

Storage is sort of a 'physical' data

#

Like SSDs/HDDs

unreal leaf
supple walrus
#

At most? A few atoms

#

With modern storage

lapis haven
#

i mean

#

if it did

#

our brains should've gained like a ton of weight since our birth

ashen briar
#

Lol

#

do you mean how many kilobytes make a megabyte? perhaps?

lapis haven
#

Sir einstein's brain probably weights 10tons

supple walrus
# lapis haven i mean

Yeah as I said the closest you can get is physical storage to attributing 'weight' to data. Like if you look how much equipment was required to store mere kilobytes in the 60/70/80s, it was alot of equipment

#

But the data itself has no attributable weight per se

ashen briar
#

or kilobytes in a byte

supple walrus
ashen briar
supple walrus
lapis haven
supple walrus
#

So the closest relevance there is, would be the data medium

#

Data is essentially just electrical signals, so electrons, so pieces of data would weigh literally mere atoms

ashen briar

ones and zeros

#

True/false

supple walrus
ashen briar

supple walrus

BUT we could also include mechanical computation, butt that's a whole different can of worms so I won't go there

lapis haven
lapis haven

the information probably is stored in different form in brain for example

supple walrus
supple walrus
ashen briar
#

Yeah ofc data is stored in a very different way than a brain. Also what Alpha just said.

#

We store all that in infastructure. And communicate back and forth with servers. While data is stored on hard drives.

supple walrus

#

The thing I find fascinating

#

It took humans longer to go from bronze swords to iron swords than it did to go from iron swords to harnessing the atom (nuclear)

ashen briar
#

Yeah now we can just bomb each other to oblivion and leave a radioactive wasteland

supple walrus
#

Once the foundations were laid about nuclear sciences, it's opened up quite literally endless possibilities

#

Even outside of nuclear, the science of medicine has come so far in the last 100 years

ashen briar
#

We're probably barely touching the surface of anything though event know. In a millenia things will look quite different in scale.

#

it would certainly be like how we're comparing the old eras.

supple walrus
ashen briar
#

Yeah too bad there are a lot of people who want to use those sciences for evil intentions. There is good, but also evil as well.

supple walrus
lapis haven
ashen briar
#

Well that's humans for you though. We like to "size each other up" Who's got the biggest tower.

We definitely have not changed much even now.

With great power comes great responsibility. And holy shit are there a lot of irresponsible people.

#

Thank goodness for the sticks

#

All our buildings, made of sticks even now. Our tools are what got us this far. Pretty cool.

supple walrus
#

Also am I the only one that thinks alien movies are stupid? If aliens cone to earth, and they're even remotely flesh based life forms, we don't need some fancy plasma gun to kill them, literally if it's a flesh meat bag, treat them like humans and just use bullets

#

And if that doesn't work? Do what we do best and USE BIGGER BULLETS

And if that Doesn't work?

ashen briar

I think hollywood is trying to warm us up to real aliens or something smh.

supple walrus
ashen briar

It would be a pretty unbiased world war. Yeah.

supple walrus

And if tanks still don't cut it? Screw killing them, literally deconstruct them limb from limb, like so

supple walrus

And it's like, zombie movies

#

Zombies, are slow as fuck

supple walrus

ashen briar

It's true though

#

You can just quietly hoard large amounts of ammo in a backpack. Sneak it back and forth to a really good spot. Then sit there and shoot zombies all day. Like, a water tower would be perfect too. Not with a shotgun of course, A hunting rifle with a scope.

#

It wouldn't be very difficult at all to wipe out zombies all day.

supple walrus
ashen briar
#

That would be perfect

#

Oh well not everyone has access to that kind of equipment though

supple walrus
#

No need to reload, you've got what, 650 round belt at your disposal

Guys I’m wondering why an external hard drive that has its own power supply and charger actually takes up 20 watts of your pc power consumption

Is the usb connection enough to generate that kind of power?

you probably need external power supply for that

u cant run it off USB A

SATA has lower maximum bandwidth on paper, but not all will fit in your system. Unless you're sure your prebuilt has an open m.2 slot compatible with a SATA or NVMe drive, go for a 2.5in SATA SSD of some sort

#

Both 2.5in and m.2 SATA drives are going to be great options for normal usecases. What sort of things do you plan on doing on the drive? @chrome lotus

you could make that chart extra long by including proprietary apple ssd's KEKW

#

just grab whatever cheapo drive with good GB/$ you can get your hands on. Preferably with DRAM, but even DRAMless will do for just games

Silicon Power A55 is superb, hopefully available in their region

#

Do you have any up-to-date links on controllers? I need to brush up again, but I'm only finding ones back from when the 660p first came out and people fearmongered HDD speeds when their drive was full... and nothing about SLC or MLC

#

pretty much every highly-acclaimed non-Samsung NVMe drive moved their smaller 256gb and some 512gb models to QLC, and Samsung made their nasty QVO series with prices higher than everyone else's non-QLC drives

#

so i just fuck around with NVME's considering they're not as bad with dramless or they can't be dramless or something like that

#

ssd's are for nerds

#

that's my excuse

#

mmmh, not sure about Helix

drowsy steppe
#

I remember Mushkin Enhanced Helix-L or LT are pretty good

#

Silicon Power A80 was also good

#

MP33 was good but i think they moved to QLC so substitute with MP34

brave field
#

but for a while, Silicon Power A60/80 and Sabrent Rocket were the only affordable ways to guarantee non-QLC

#

Crucial P2 was recommended but it also become QLC

#

Either the WD sn570 or SN550 was good

#

Yeah it was the Mushkin Enhanced Helix-L that was very recommended

#

XPG SX8200 was recommended but controller change i forgot perf diff

#

Hynix gold was praised

#

Crucial P5 was on sale and that's it

#

@brave field are you perhaps one of the 1000 people in the world that actually know HDD's

#

cause i sure don't
