worse is being in the US in the rust belt, or somewhere it snows

slate harness
#

haha. I money shifted and fragmented my clutch disk

#

fortunately it was more like a "time shift" because the clutch was under warranty - it just killed a weekend.

#

I'm at the tire store getting a rebalance, and this new gear they got for tire mounting/balancing is amazing. They don't pick up the tires/wheels onto the balancer - it has a lift. Fire-and-forget inflators in cages, and they switched from air impact guns to Milwaukee M18s, so the whole shop is about a third as loud and there's nothing to trip over on the floors. Nothing like any tire store I've ever been in before.

slate harness
kind osprey
#

Ohh

fleet owl
#

i wish a place like that existed here

slate harness
#

Yeah. Aftermarket parts are the same worldwide - the warranty coverage widely varies.

#

like here - you can buy lifetime warranty brake pads. You wear them down to the wear sensor, take them back to the store, they load up your account/prior sales - everything matches they take your worn out ones and hand you a new set.

#

I don't foresee this sticking around forever as Americans are keeping cars on the road far longer than they used to. I want to say the median age of our auto fleet is like 14 years now.

#

but, had it been a "good" clutch from a respectable reseller, it probably would have been disqualified for warranty coverage due to overspeed - but a quality clutch disk probably wouldn't have grenaded at ~7500.

lone geyser
slate harness
#

I mean, I appreciate the things snap-on offers that are exceptional. They make the thinnest wall sockets that aren't a total f'n joke that I've experienced. Their chrome tools look amazing for decades with lots of use and zero love, etc.

#

The only snap-on rachets I have are older and I suspect a 'heavy duty' line as they're like 36 tooth

#

I honestly prefer HF's 72 tooth offerings to those snap-ons. My dad loved the snap-on rachets but he had a tendency to abuse the hell out of them. Like, I spent thousands and thousands of hours watching him work and then working with him and I never saw him grab a breaker bar 😄

#

throw a 4' cheater on a snapon rachet? Regularly.

He also had some S&K rachets that he reserved for interior/light work and they're lovely, but the better HF rachets feel almost identical.

kind osprey
#

My car is the hatch version of the lineup and it has been a lot more practical

#

Because I should be able to fit my bike in here

silent oak
#

I want a Mustang over a gr Corolla

dire shard
#

if there is any gr yaris in america, it's imported - which means it has to be show and display, because it's not 25 years old yet

#

the gr yaris will never be sold in america

#

because it's built on a platform that they never sold in america, meaning they have to go through the steps of certifying the platform - that's the whole reason they made the gr corolla

#

because they sell the corolla in america already, they don't need to certify a new platform to introduce the gr corolla

#

that all begs the question, why the hell do you want a gr yaris when you can get the gr corolla
the three door hatchback is very unpopular in america for the same reasons it's popular in europe and asia - thing's tiny and while european and asian cities are extremely dense and therefore the yaris is perfect for them, the corolla is already considered a very small car in america and the larger size of the country and the larger size of the citizens makes the corolla a better choice for the north america market

#

once you get over the feeling of "i want cool car that i can't have", you realize... if they were in your position, they'd buy the corolla too, because a more spacious car is much more pleasant to be in

dire shard
#

granted, the caveat with being american is that you can afford and have space for a second car, so i guess the practicality factor goes out the window

onyx rivet
#

living in a country where i can (if i am in a position to) by either GR hatches

#

i will say that while the GR 'Rolla is probably the car i would have, i will say that the GR Yaris is the cooler car

#

practically a WRC homologation model

#

and i guess its closer to the size of hot hatch of the golden years

dire shard
#

it is the cooler car, it's got two doors, it's smaller and lighter, it's the one with the homologation, but far as being a cheap(heh) single daily for a cheap single person, it's inferior in material and practicality

#

if you could choose between the two, the yaris instantaneously looks like a toy

#

i specify material because god damn the yaris looks like ass inside

onyx rivet
#

cool toy tho

onyx rivet
#

honestly i would go on to say that the pre-facelift GR Yaris' interior looks better even with the half-arsed placement of the iPad™

dire shard
#

it looked slightly less like a boxtruck interior

#

okay, significantly less

lone geyser
#

Suppose this is wealthy living in America

slate harness
#

I rented a Yaris once. I swore I'd never get in one again if I could avoid it. Toyota always hits their design points perfectly, and they clearly designed being completely fucking miserable into the interior design of the early-mid 2010s yaris.

#

I also realized today for not-much-more-money I could have purchased a Chevy SS when I bought my Camry.

#

the SS would probably still be worth >50% of what I paid for it. Camry isn't worthless but it sure as hell isn't worth half of what I paid.

dire shard
#

brand like toyota gotta have a car for every range, and the yaris is the shittiest of the shit

#

it's not a whole lot of steps higher than a mirage, which was the cheapest new car you could buy period

#

at the segment that the yaris is punching at, you're basically just buying the ability to drive - nothing more

#

cheap and reliable, keeps you dry in the rain, costs nothing to operate, costs nothing to purchase - at this cost, expect no concessions

#

the irony of that generation of yaris being a mazda2 underneath is that now, the mazda2 hybrid looks just like a yaris

silent oak
#

Mijuuu aren’t they bringing back the Mazda for a new run ?

dire shard
#

the mazda2? it still exists, it was just pulled from north america because the entire segment of tiny hatches failed

Whether it is or not idek, seems low to me

Does the car vibrate at idle ?

Especially when the AC is on

It's their fault

fleet owl
#

Which they'll bill me for

naive thorn
#

Technicians love someone who's cooperative, but definitely don't sleep on a sloppy job

naive thorn
#

It's part of the same fix

#

Idk how the garage culture is where you're at

#

But here, if the car isn't fixed then no one gets paid

#

I once needed to change the brake master cylinder, and they started working on it without checking if they had a matching part. When they found out, they had to put it back together and I didn't pay them for the 3 hours they wasted

#

I couldn't find a replacement myself

#

Some terrible punctuation here

fleet owl
#

I already paid them when they fitted new alternator and battery cause before it wasn't holding charge or charging at all and would stop working (even after being jumped) when turned off

#

They fixed it, supplied parts, etc so job done. I never noticed the issues until later on but thought not much of it. But 1+1 is 2 and if voltage is low then there's obviously something wrong with what they replaced

Here, you find vehicles in ok external condition - often times where they aren't rotten on the bottom. Not quite AZ clean, but reasonable. But the interiors are always mega-trashed due to UV and heat

I need to take a trip north so I can get a decent original dash and other interior plastics for my truck

dire shard
#

you see the opposite problem up north

#

interiors are fine

#

but depending on where the car is manufactured and where it lived after it was sold, exteriors are often rusted through because of the use of salt on roads in winter months

#

older japanese cars rust most because japan doesn't use salt on a majority of their roads and hence didn't do anything to address that when exporting, but eventually any car rusts because the owners don't know to spray the underbody down after driving on salted roads

this is why this car comes out of japan where having a single car is already a privilege, why the civic type r has historically been most popular in other south-east asian regions like hong kong, the philippines, or thailand, which all have similar space constraints or wealth disparities - and why there are really no four door sports cars coming out of america other than the ct4v/ct5v blackwings (and calling those sports cars is kind of a joke... more like, well tuned luxury sedans)
