honestly, the best bang/buck I ever got out of a new car was a Hyundai. An early delivery first year (2001) Santa Fe. I put 280k on it with minimal problems. CV joints, alternator, AC compressor, motor mounts, timing belts every 60k. That kind of stuff. Paid $20k, worth every penny.

problem was the dealer mechanic was chasing some totally unrelated noise and had been jacking with the timing belt and left the allen wrench he used as a release tool in the tensioner. Somehow the timing belt didn't jump for about 300 miles.

dealer ended up paying for all of it, including the rent car that hyundai had originally agreed to pay for assuming it was a 'real' failure.

whats nuts is... it jumped 4 teeth on 1 head. Made bad noises and lost power instantly. Didn't bend valves, didn't damage pistons (leakdown tests and the heads removed for visual inspection) - just put back into time and proceeded to put 210k more miles on it.
