If you're doing it right you shouldn't take any damage, gunfire has only a couple hundred meter range which is far less than lock-on range

Rockets have better AoE than savage cannon, so if you know where they are you shouldn't have an issue shooting a rocket into the exterior wall at their position afterwards

I also like just using the sparrow because it's convinient for all the other contracts as well, so you can just go to roof after starting each time
