a glitch with the DH-7 iron mule that involves too many bits of data being sent, although this can happen to any vehicle really if done right, its just so easy with the open rotor helicopters

Initially when the vehicle was destroyed (tail rotor died), the data ran over your character HP amount, and also counted it as destroyed, and since there was so much happening at once it didn't check where the data was being put, so it counted the vehicle HP as character HP
