To keep it simple. There are index funds etfs and individual stocks. Etfs's are much much safer long term as most companies may not sustain crazy growth for 30-40 years straight. What an index fund does is manage hundreds of companies in one basket and let's you buy a stock/share of that basket

So if one company goes bust and dies, they can replace it with another quickly
