Source: @hasty fog

Location: Found at 35,38 in the Azure Span inside the hollow of a broken tree.
Zelth <Ancient Mender> - green - ID:190219
Rakloo <Ancient Mender> - purple - ID:197623
Kout <Ancient Mender> - orange - ID:197625

Observations and Theories:
-Their names when read left to right read: Zelthrak Lookout. There is no such place, it does not exist. But there is a Zelthrak Outpost not far to the east at 54,50 Azure Span.
-The absence of the named location and weird formatting of their names is mega sus. I considered it to be an anagram. Reading it may be a misdirection. I’ve found only one perfect solution that makes use of all the letters as an anagram of Zelthrak Lookout.

LOOK AT THE ROKZUL

Additional note: Their titles, Ancient Mender, are used nowhere else in the game. They are completely unique to these three. Also their IDs are weird. Two of them are back to back, but the first one is very far split off.

Questions:
Possible an anagram is not the clue at all and their names have another meaning to interpret or are encoded in a different way.
Keep in mind the Zelthrak Outpost location too.
It is an anagram, but my solution is wrong. I haven’t yet figured out anything else that can be spelled with it and still make sense, but someone else might.

More info found in the doc here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQP3o2EElZ1FX_emKhbre2gpxcTCXhcL9Q7OmbAWBLR1CKSwswoCVwrSDoupecyWALSt4H5yVn3KSbz/pub

their names are identical in every language (well at least every language that uses the latin alphabet)

#

i seriously doubt this isnt a secret of some kind (theres no way their names spelling out something is a coincidence) but it looks like it wasnt properly localized

#

my guess is that its not an anagram and its pointing to a location that overlooks zelthrak but i cant get on wow right now to look around 😭

THERES A TALL TOWER

#

CAPS**

#

theres a tall tower just above zalthrak outpost

#

with a random teaset there that resembles the dragon tea set

#

which coincidentally is the only toy it lets you place on the table

finite latch
#

Theres also an ancient stone not too far away from the outpost in a cave

grave bluff
#

If we're talking about the same place, I was able to put other stuff on the table. Like, a whale bone tea pot

#

At ~55,50 is the tower I'm in

#

Though I did notice the dragon tea set is about the same size as this and,at least for me, was oriented the right way. So if placing stuff is part of it, I wonder if the other "outline" has something that fits neatly inside of it

#

Another idea- it reminds me of the ruby feasts. At least for me it seemed like the feasts were on a weekly cycle (7 possible outcomes, 1 a day, starting at a random point each reset and cycling through them all). Is that pot on the table one of the things that cycles in the feast, that could hint at the other two things?

Was going to say that

finite latch
#

Since it mentioned in the doc the possible link between the "ancient masters" and the "ancient stones" i tried using the tower as the axis for rotating the view lines around a map of the stones and got these 4 possibilities, no idea if the black one even matters given its the golem. Keep in mind the stars probably arent perfectly accurate on the map

Next to zelthrak outpost, there is a fallen tree at an angle that allows you to walk all the way up it, and at the top of it you could say it "overlooks" zelthral outpost, and it also has 3 chipmunks on it. These chipmunks also arent battle pet tamable like others, nor does wowhead say anything about them being here, or anywhere in DF for that matter

stiff cradle

Well, if we're in the anagrams realm, the Jewel Clusters rewards spell out Manny, which is the Health Supervisor in The Azure Span

#

also therre is the turtle ritual trinket that gives u a constant buff

finite latch
#

I mean, is that really an anagram if its just the first letters and the names are based on well known lore characters?

stiff cradle
#

but yes, it could also be nothing

broken storm
#

how are the jewel clusters related to the ancients tho?

weak kelp
#

but if it is an anagram then it has to be a blizzard specific word that is in all translations that use the latin alphabet

halcyon condor
#

maybe it's just a clue for where you can find one of the dragon glyphs? It's in a tree trunk overlooking zethrak outpost. And they are trees... Those ancients.

amber dune
#

would be odd for a clue to be much, much harder to find than the thing its a clue to 😛

#

the dragon glyphs are visible from a long way away theres a chat message and a loud sound cue when you get close and the achievement tells you the subzone every glyph is in (including the zelthrak one)

halcyon condor
#

well could have been something that was an initial idea to help find glyphs but maybe got scraped. Doesn't that happen sometimes? It just seems too obvious to be something else imo.

weak kelp
narrow merlin
#

I feel like the colour might be important. At zelthrak, there's a set of 3 cups with green liquid (next to the water barrel, under the fallen tower), and another set of 3 with orange liquid (top of the tower), although I can't find a set with purple.

#

the mobs there also come in the same colours

#

that said, the area is used as part of the dragonscale expedition renown questline, so it's not exclusive to any secret

weak kelp
halcyon condor
#

yeah but in beta, there wasn't that mesaage, hence why I'm wondering if it's just a leftover thing.

narrow merlin
#

Colours are definitely not exact, but it feels like more than a coincidence to have the green/purple/orange theme anyway

hasty fog
halcyon condor

#

So the glyph at Zulthrak post is at the mid top of a tree, a little bit higher, are these

#

I don't remember seeing random critters atop a very high tree, not many if at all tbh

#

I dont see them listed as npcs in the span

#

and I can't fight the pet, the area is obscured, I've tried reloading and everything D:

finite latch
#

i dont think theres any other trees in the entire zone angled like that for you to walk up on either

#

the 3 keepers to 3 chipmunks is also odd

#

esp since despite the fact they are the exact same ID, you cant catch these ones

#

Guessing they also arent common in the zone given even WoWhead doesnt say they are there yet

stiff cradle
#

I killed the alpine chipmunks before the reset ;x

halcyon condor
#

kinda sus there are normal critters in a place full of critters that are elemental/dragon like. Minus the ducks.

#

oh yeah. Even the ducks are meant to have dragon-like vibes according to the artist who made them. So just the chipmunks are normal and sus.

#

maybe the alpine chipmunks are the secret easter egg?

stiff cradle
#

check this amusing pet description on the "Squirrel" pet, they share the model
"Most people do not know the difference between a squirrel and a chipmunk. Most don't care." Jebaited

halcyon condor

Squirrels are aggressive. Chipmunks are cute. Easy.

#

some people live in extremely urban, small land countries and have never seen a squirrel nor chipmunk.
when they're so abundant in your country, they are also abundant in your culture. : > so yeah, makes sense

#

weak kelp
#

both will chew on stuff and make nests in your attack, chipmunks are harder to see cause they small and cute

halcyon condor
#

I've never had a chipmunk aggressively chatter at me like a squirrel tho. Those dudes can be mean lol

stiff cradle
#

I've heard the stories tho D: so yeah, I'm glad they're chipmunks

#

maybe we should give them an apple so they can reach them ultimate form lol [Red-Tailed Chipmunk pet description]

Tried summoning my own Alpine Chipmunk battlepet at them, and now i need a crazycheck.

When i was watching them before, i don't think they were doing a '"chin scratch" animation, just the one where they wave their arms forward.

Do other peoples treants do the chin scratch?

from doing a quick look at the doc I feel like there's been far too much focus on the anagram

weak kelp

so, these trees are called Ancient's Menders, and we have a guaranteed drop from a WoD rare Yggdrel and it's an Ancient's Bloom. maybe there needs to be 4 trees. Has anyone used the toy at the location with the trees.

i tried using the ancient mount everyone gets, and its almost the exact same model, but different color, with no result

wonder if the weather changing stones will have an effect on the ancient mount

if they do I foresee a 'let it snow' tree fest in lava zones with the blizzard stone

finite latch

thats an interesting idea

#

i wonder if the engineer toys that change the climate and sky do anything to the mount

#

they do not

weak kelp

I would say that it would have to be weather stones that any class/race can use but then there's hivemind, so that 'rule' about being able to solo secrets is 'flew out the cuckoos nest'

dusky spire
#

The engineering toys also do not affect the other trees it seems

#

I also noticed, in Zelthrak Outpost, there are 3 enemies that are burnt and always dead.

are you using these toys with the tree mount? that's what I was wondering if the toys would change.
There are 4 seasons and the Ancient Mender trees only represent 3 of the seasons, where's spring?
Zelth - green - summer
Rakloo - purple - winter
Kout - brown - fall
Yggdrel - flowers - spring _ ????
or
Use a spring weather stone on the tree mount - flowers - spring

LOOK AT THE ROKZUL

Rokzul is an npc during a hunt in the Ohn'hran Plains. I ran out there and that hunt magically happened lol. i did /look before we attacked, during the fight, and after and nothing seemed to happen or change. I didn't see a buff or anything weird during the fight.

Just an observation, but Zelth has blue eyes and Rakloo and Kout have yellow eyes. Every ancient in the game except for these two, including our Wandering Ancient mount on all four seasons has blue eyes, and these guys have "lookout" as part of their collective name, which is what you do with eyes. I don't know what to do with this, and it might be nothing, but idk.

If you could find ancients of that same color/model with different eye colors than that mender it could be relevent. But that just might be the regular color palette for that.

#

I personally found nothing that triggered a mousover tooltip, nor anything I could interact with with the interact key. Same goes for Flying around Lookout Mordren, who also did not get the memo about not being suspicious. Went to the Zelthrak Outpost tower to check this out - just some potential theories...

  • On the table in the tower is a larger model of the Dragon Tea Set, with three cups (the same amount of NPCs back at the tree). They're steaming as if recently made. Wonder if 3+ players drinking from the tea set Toy in the tower would do anything (yet to get a party together to test...)
  • Close to the lookout tower is the Obstructed Hornswog. One of the rare drops from this NPC is the Carving of Awakening. Being a wooden carving, curious as to whether using the item back at the tree (might be a stretch this one, it can be dropped elsewhere...)

I found something fairly odd with the ancients... Their animations stutter in specific moments. And the pattern repeats. I don't have the time to sit down properly, and write it out, but so far:

  • Green stops and repeats animation always "midway"
  • Blue stops and repeats animation further towards the end or completely finishes the animation
  • Orange has a fairly regular, very short animation stutter.

And the pattern DOES repeat all the time.

I ask anyone interested in this secret to have a look at their animations and see if they can confirm what I found

Okay guys, we found something REALLY interesting. PLEASE double-check.

A friend and I observed the treants. Turns out that BLUE (purple) always animates at the same time in BOTH our games. The blue treant does not display the same animations in each game (In mine he does the "stretch" animation; in my friend's the "beard stroke"). BUT

They both animate at the very same time. We have observed him for a while now. He's the only treant that animates across two separate games (pc, instances) identically timed.

We are sitting in voice and announcing eachother whenever he moves. And he does that geniuely simultaniously.

patent crest
#

A while back I posted about a change in my blue tree's animation as he stopped growling at me and began scratching his beard. After some testing I was able to trigger this for all of them based on player distance and orientation. Emots appeared to change what animation they did too.

#

However, I tried this on the other trees in zone and they too had odd animation patterns. Not sure but felt it was more of a bug then clue

#

If your still looking to test this further I had 2 theory's I did not get to test. 1) was to try using the emote pose used by the hunter trees on them. Thought it was interesting that they are the same color trees but in a different order.

#

The other emote thing I wanted to test was drawing from the wall of painting in the lookout tower. Had noticed in the main city water section there were a clust of insect with similar configuration but the blue insect had an odd name (thirsty). Was wondering if other objects or npc reveled similar emotable words.

@patent crest#079 you are correct. This problem came to light during the lucid nightmare puzzle and blizzard addressed is saying that in the future that secrets would be acceptable to the color blind. Later they went further and added in ques for the hear impared as well.

I do know they added this to the game for accommodations for people who are color blind and visually impared. Idk how these accommodations work or if they would effect how the secret would be presented to anyone using these modes

We are sitting in voice and announcing each other whenever he moves. And he does that genuinely simultaneously.

Edit: Also I wanted to point out: My friend and I did a wonky screen-recording-mash-up where where one would stream their wow screen and the other would record their own wow screen along with the friend's wow stream (I know it sounds like random words).

Also what we found is that Blue has two "animation modes" that get "assigned" to players randomly. Sometimes when I did a ui reload I was the one to always get the "beard stroke animation" while my friend only got the "stretch animation". After reloading those assigned animations would switch and I got the "stretch animations" only while my friend got the "beard stroke" ones. Again: Despite this, the animations would stop / stutter always at the same time in both games.

TL; DR:
We could prove that - having both wow instances "next to each other" - the stutters from blue treant always happen at the same time and that the animation sets of "stroking beard" or "stretching" would get "assigned" to a player randomly. Even after multiple ui reloads, relogs, being in or outside a group. It was always simultaneously.

<@&285953105202511872> Sorry to bother you, but I think this might be pin worthy given the confirmed double check by other secret finders here?

So what we found observing him for almost half an hour was:

He has two animation "sets"
A = 85% stretch animation with a few rare 15% beard stroke animation - Basically he would stretch all the time, with one beard stroke in between.
B = 85% beard stroke animation with a few rare 15% stretch animation - Basically he would stroke his beard all the time, with one stretch in between.

It never ever happend that my friend and I both got A and A or B and B. It was always A and B. Who would get animation set A or B was random.

Okay. I'd like to point out a new curiosity.

I tossed the "stutter animation"-idea aside for now and focused on the "the simplest solution is probably the likeliest". So Zelthrak Lookout -> Zelthrak Outpost -> Infamous 3 squirrles.

My thoughts / findings (Gonna overlap with what has been found already, but I list it for the sake of clarity / keeping information in one place:

  1. Those three "Alpine Chipmunks" belong either to https://www.wowhead.com/npc=49779/alpine-chipmunk or to https://www.wowhead.com/npc=62189/alpine-chipmunk both of which where added loooong before Dragonflight.
  2. Those npcs listed appear in very specific zones only namely Winterspring, Stonetalon Mountains, Mount Hyjal, Highmountain, Drustvar and Tiragarde Sound
  3. Accoring to Wowhead there shouldn't be "alpine Chipmunks" in the Azure Span
  4. Two of the three squirrles are regular critters with 5HP each. ONE is a battle pet. Though it is impossible to fight it up there ("Pet battle area is obstructed.").

My thoughts so far:
The three treants were a simple hint to go check out Zelthrak Outpost due to the name "Zelthrak". Then the treants made the hint of "looking out" for something around the area. Thus the three alpine chipmunks AND the three polarbears (sitting on a cliff) were found. Now the next hint (just tossing ideas here) would lie around the alpine chipmunks and / or the three polarbears sitting.

I strongly believe that placing one single battle pet on top of that tree trunk while also being unable to fight it is no accident but absolutely intentional and the next hint.

Things I tried:

  • I taunted the battle pet (no damage) and it fled, temporarily turning it into a regular critter as well, before it ran back up again and turned back into a battle pet oO
  • Went ahead, tamed a "Alpine Chipmunk" from Highmountain, returned to them and summoned it

He agreed with me about how the ancients' animations are funky (We also did the whole "Does they move at the same time in your game and in my game"-thing). I can confirm now that the animation stutters and resets are server side; not game client side - In multiple instances and with three different people in three different game regions (EU though), it is simultaniously.

The new idea here though:
He proposed the idea that the stutters could be morse code OR coordinates

And behold:

Wouldn't ya know it. Coordinates usually are color-coded: Blue, green and red - I wonder who else shares that color palette... Oh wait. It's the ancients. :P

I sat by the tree boys for multiple hours over several days, meticulously recording and logging the times for their animations and identifying the frequencies of each animation which I then categorised into "common", "uncommon" and "rare" movements. The movements they will do are:

  1. Just stand still breathing in and out like normal. (Stand)
  2. They'll roar side-to-side (Roar)
  3. They'll scratch their beard (Scratch)
They do not do any other type of movements at all.

Each ancient has 3 possible animations they go through with different rarity of animation coming up before suddenly resetting stance:

  • common (you'll see this most of the time)
  • uncommon (you'll see this less often than common but much more than rare, usually about 1 every 1-2 minutes)
  • rare (you'll see this VERY rarely. Sometimes 10+ minutes without seeing it! There was a period where Zelth didn't do his rare for just over 20 minutes!)

Zelth (Green ancient):
COMMON - Stand: 5 second animation
UNCOMMON - Roar: 10 second animation
RARE - Scratch: 5 second animation

Rakloo (Purple ancient)
COMMON - Stand into unfinished roar: 6 second animation
UNCOMMON - Roar into unfinished roar: 12 second animation
RARE - Scratch: 6 second animation

Kout (Orange ancient):
COMMON - Stand into unfinished roar: 4 second animation
UNCOMMON - Roar into unfinished roar: 11 second animation
RARE - Scratch into unfinished roar -> 7 second animation

Two things that stand out as peculiar for me:
The first thing is that the UNCOMMON animation duration is equal to the sum of the COMMON and RARE animation for all 3 ancients!
The second thing is that the ancients are all "secondary" colour palettes (green = yellow+blue, purple = red+blue, orange = red+yellow)

Now I don't know where I'm going with this but I spent more than 24 hours carefully observing and recording incredibly accurately to the split second for each animation. This can be no coincidence.

Results:
87% of the time, Zelth just stands there before resetting. (Common animation, 4 seconds length)
10% of the time, Zelth will roar and look side-to-side before resetting. (Uncommon animation, 10 seconds length)
3% of the time, Zelth will scratch his beard before resetting (Rare animation, 5 seconds length).

#

I feel like Zelthrak Outpost might be somehow related to this puzzle, it's too convenient their names lead that way if it's for nothing. There is a cliff and a tower at the outpost both of which could be considered Zelthrak lookouts, on the cliff there was 3 bears sitting gazing in to the distance, in the tower there is a steaming tea pot with 3 cups beside it, but there is also a tall tree half resting ontop of Zelthrak outpost which has 3 Alpine Chipmunks ontop of it (which seem very out of place for this zone).

#

It's also notable that out of the 3 bears 2 of them sit next to eachother while one of them is seated further apart, and out of the 3 tea cups 2 of them are right next to eachother while the third one is slightly apart aswell. The chipmunks keep moving around so they cannot be grouped up like that. (2 clues are static, similar.. 1 clue is dynamic, different)

#

If you go by the "2 are grouped 1 is apart" logic then it also rings true with the mender ID's with 2 of them being almost next to eachother while one of them has a totally different range of ID.... But it bothers me why are the 2 similar ID's not 1 number apart but 2? .. They end with 23 and 25. I looked in to what's ID 197624 and it's https://www.wowhead.com/npc=197624/mana-wyrm .. Could this lead somewhere?

I don't know if it bears any significance but from what I quickly read the protagonist in Yu-Gi-Oh is solving (and holding on to) something called a Millenium Puzzle which is this weird upside down pyramid apparatus. The quest NPC this questline revolves around is a reference to that protagonist and is wearing a belt with a loosely similar kind of upside down pyramid model (which is not familiar to me elsewhere in the game). Just a wild jab, could be nothing. Anyways sleeping now ->

I kinda want to revive this secret. I know it's been slow and no progress has been made, but I'm very, very certain that this is in fact a full secret. There is no way that with their weird names and the whole "animations reset stutter" this whole thing is justone big coincidience

#

I want to add: Chances are perhaps, that this secret will be conected to 10.1.7? With the whole Dream / Worldtree thing

dusk oyster

dusk oyster

spiral silo
#

I do disagree about the animation cycle part. Ican't recall a single npc, even less so, three next to each other that have that type of regular and predictable stutter, which is btw serverwide. I checked with a friend and while the animations themselves and the treants who did them varied across both of our clients, the timing was on the milisecond identical. No matter how long we watched, they would always perfectly align every single time

#

So, okay. What else would they be in your opinion? Just an easteregg, or what do you think?

dusk oyster
#

The boring/safe/consistently right answer is usually "cut content or content planned for later". Hard to be sure until we see changes like we did with the Ancient Stones. All I am saying is many people have been trying to start a secret at the menders and they really don't seem to be telling us to do anything specific.

#

I'm also considering NPCs like the 1 kyrian down in the maw that was never tied to any questline/event, or the kyrian chest tucked away in that Revendreth tower. Sometimes they cut content but don't cut every part of it. But if a group of finders convinced themselves that it just HAD to be related to something then they would likely still be looking into it

#

We got the names that match up to be similar to a named location that is 100% sus. But that is all we have had for months

spiral silo
#

Absolutely, I can imagine that they are connected to 10.1.7 perhaps. With the emerald dream / the world tree and such. We've seen it with the Secrets of Azeroth / Arrows thing too. So no doubt that this a possibility.

Adding just in case it's of interest. Once someone cued me to the names, and Zelthrak Overlook, I got lost looking for the Overlook and ended up in Ancient Outlook.

Someone earlier mentioned Three Falls Lookout, and how a line between it and Zelthrak runs straight over what I'm thinking of as the tree-oh. This is also true of Ancient Outlook and Zelthrak. And those three points make use of three of the four words we can get out of their names and titles.

Is it possible these three points map an arrow towards the Eastern Kingdoms? They do make a very, very narrow triangle.

..... uh.... could they be pointing towards Mender's Stead?!

This map is definitely imo the Forbidden reach (u can compare the maps and all the islands are the same). The three trees have the title "mender" and in the Forbidden reach there's a place called " The caldera of menders" and there, inside a cave, there's an identic map like the one Sovietkayn showed previously. This map is covered by a paper with a hole showing an exact position... This seems very very odd.

#

And next to this cave in The caldera of menders there's some kind of "ritual" similar to the ending of Hivemind. I'll post a picture. This may be the ending of the secret but this is just a theory.

Rakloo CreatureID:197623 Kout CreatureID:197625 (odd one out Zelth with CreatureID:190219)
